SeaWorld Stock Plummets Following “Blackfish” Documentary The release of “Blackfish” is taking it’s toll on mighty mighty SeaWorld, with backlash following the film putting a serious dent in the pockets of the execs who bankroll the orca park, which is now infamous for the terrible treatment of the animals and trainers who toil there. According to Financial Post reports: SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. dropped to a record low after reporting earnings that missed analysts’ estimates and saying controversy over the treatment of captive whales in its theme-park shows hurt attendance. The shares tumbled 32% to US$19.16 at 12:39 p.m. in New York after falling to US$19.30, the lowest since they started trading in April 2013. Before today, SeaWorld had retreated 23% in a year following the release of “Blackfish,” a critical documentary about one of its performing killer whales. The company acknowledged for the first time that pressure from animal-rights groups is reducing attendance, said Barton Crockett, an analyst at FBR & Co., calling second-quarter results “surprisingly weak.” The theme-park operator had tried to head off a proposed ban on keeping orcas in captivity in California with a lobbying campaign that raised doubts about claims that the animals are harmed in its parks. “Attendance in the quarter was impacted by demand pressures related to recent media attention surrounding proposed legislation in the state of California,” Orlando, Florida-based SeaWorld said today in a statement. SeaWorld expects revenue to decline as much 7% in 2014. Sales fell 1.5% to US$405.2 million last quarter, the company said, missing the US$445.2 million average of estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Earnings of 43 cents a share also trailed the average prediction of 58 cents. Before the controversy over “Blackfish,” SeaWorld sold shares at US$27 each in its April 2013 IPO. Blackstone Group LP, which controlled the theme-park operator, chose an initial public offering for SeaWorld, snubbing takeover bids from Apollo Global Management LLC and Onex Corp., because the firm expected an IPO to yield better returns over time than a sale, a person familiar with the matter said last year. Blackstone, which had owned all of SeaWorld’s equity, has since cut its stake to 22%, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. In response to the slowdown, the company has hired an adviser to identify ways to cut costs this year and next, SeaWorld Chief Executive Officer James Atchison said on a conference call today. The savings will be used to reinvest in new attractions and to increase stock buybacks. Amid lobbying by SeaWorld, a California legislative panel in April put off for at least a year a proposed measure that would ban whale breeding and the use of the animals for entertainment. Click Orlando reports: Ocala police say they’re getting closer to catching the woman who used a stolen credit card to buy $400worth of hair last month. Officers have received numerous tips from the public after releasing a picture of a smiling woman posing with the card on Monday. Her victim, 74-year-old Josephine Lupo, had her wallet stolen while shopping at a Ocala Walmart. “I’ve never had anything stolen from me,” Lupo told Local 6. “I’m shaking right now every time I think about. I think, ‘How could that happen?’” Abdel Kasem said the alleged thief is a regular customer, but the Kasem said she grew suspicious after the thief showed a credit card and didn’t have a matching driver’s license. “She kept saying, ‘You know me, you know me,’ and I said, ‘I know your face, but we don’t know your name, so I’m not gonna take your card without ID.’” That’s when Kasem asked to take her picture with the credit card. “I thought that would scare her into saying I don’t want this anymore, but she smiled for it,” Kasem said. The picture surprised Lupo, too. She old Local 6 the woman who took her wallet was not African-American. So now police are hoping a picture will help lead them to whoever else was helping her steal. “I’m going put all my credit cards in a vault,” said Lupo. “I want them in jail.” According to the police report, there may be even more evidence for police. Teen Boy Charged With Murder Of Florida Homeless Man via Florida News-Press Nearly a quarter-mile off the road, Thomas J. Bergstrom, 51, built a 20-foot-by-20-foot compound of pallets and bright blue tarps. A transient, that’s where he hooked up a TV and watched it from his scruffy recliner near 100 NE Pine Island Road. Anthony Cashdollar found him Saturday morning, stretched out on the ground, blood congealing on his arm and mouth, just feet from the recliner. “I was so shocked, I just sat my hand on his back,” Cashdollar, 18, said Sunday night, adding that he called “Tommy, Tommy, Tommy. … Then it hit me that Tommy was dead.” Sgt. Dana Coston of the Cape Coral Police Department said 13-year-old city resident Yoel Munoz was arrested at home Sunday, charged with second-degree murder and burglary in Bergstrom’s death. He was being held Sunday night and bond had not been set. His first court hearing was expected this morning. Munoz’s father, Osmin, does not speak English and, through an interpreter, declined to comment about his son or the slaying. Coston said Bergstrom was a transient and had been stabbed multiple times. The crime was discovered at 11:48 a.m. Saturday when Cape police responded to a report of a deceased person at the camp. Cashdollar said he had gone to visit Bergstrom to show him his new dirt bike. He peeked into a makeshift room, seeing a blood-soaked recliner. And then I looked around, and there Tommy was. He was dead.” Based on evidence recovered from and near the scene, Cape detectives identified Munoz as a suspect, Coston said. Burglary charges can stem from someone entering an area like the camp with an intent to commit a crime, Coston said, and added that murder investigation is ongoing. In July, Cape police had issued a missing persons report for Munoz, saying he had been reported missing June 30 between 9 and 10 p.m. and was suspected of heading to East Fort Myers. At 10:45 a.m. July 1, Cape police reported Munoz had been found “safe and sound.” At the first appearance of Munoz in Lee County juvenile court Monday morning, Munoz was given three weeks of secure detention and will be in court on Aug.21. A man was charged with two counts of child abuse after using pepper spray on two children, police said. Florida Man Arrested After Pepper Spraying Kids Playing In His Yard Two boys, ages 8 and 10, were playing by mailboxes in the 300 block of Country Club Oval shortly after 5:45 p.m. Wednesday when they were confronted by resident Wilbert Vreen, according to a police charging affidavit. The boys told police that Vreen sprayed their faces with pepper spray, which a witness confirmed, according to the affidavit. “They displayed signs consistent with being sprayed by pepper spray, which were watery eyes and mucous on the upper lip,” according to the affidavit. Vreen, 58, told police that, while he did own pepper spray, he had not used the spray on the boys, but did say they were bothering him, according to the affidavit. Records show Vreen was being held Thursday at the Volusia County Branch Jail on $10,000 bail. Only in Florida !
