She admitted the wig was a bad choice on her part: “As a designer, you take risks that sometimes don’t work! I think we all can agree the bob wig I wore in my interview didn’t work. I could give you this whole spill about what actually happened that day, but I’d rather not! I will say this though: A wig comes off, so it’s a good thing I am comfortable in the skin I am in. RZA would be correct … Gawker interviewed WuTang rapper/producer and Staten Island native RZA about the recent death of Eric Garner and subsequent non-indictment of the police officers who killed him. Here are some of the best excerpts: RZA on what went wrong with the police’s interaction with Eric Garner in the first place Do you think the cops were acting aggressively? RZA: Those gentlemen were wrong — the cop had a utility belt of options for different escalating scenarios. He had a stick, pepper spray, he had his physical training … but to jump up on him? It looked like a gang fight, and that’s totally wrong. The cops had other options — I’ve been pepper sprayed before, it’s 100% efficient. You gonna chill out. It’s a chill pill. So the problem is that the situation escalated to chokehold and eventual death? RZA: The real problem I have with it is that we got the guy [police officer Daniel Pantaleo] red-handed, in HD quality. And not just the one cop, all those cops should have been indicted. Those are the guys who give us the non-value of black life. RZA on the non-indictment of the police At this point is there misplaced trust in authority or feelings that the system won’t work? RZA: The system works but only in certain cases. When you run a red light, the camera light flashes and takes a picture of your plate. You will get a ticket, you will get charged. Because there’s a picture, whether it shows your face or not. Here we have a man who was killed and there is a clear image of it, but there’s no indictment. So there’s clearly an issue with competence, due process and maybe even equality? RZA: When you see it on camera, when we get a grand jury — white, black, aliens, and not one person says ‘indict’? No one sees the injustice? It’s not that I fully blame the cops. I played a cop on TV, I spent a year walking around telling people: “I’m a cop.” But it’s becoming like the people in uniform have criminal personalities and criminal minds — and they’re not embarrassed by it. They find no fault in what they’re doing, a spade is a spade yo. The video is an indictment in itself. RZA: It’s different when there’s HD quality video going along with it. This generation is questioning a lot of what they’re taught. A black man being targeted is nothing new. With Mike Brown, the video is questionable but it’s beyond a shadow of a doubt with what happened with Eric Garner. Even with all our tech advances we are actually devolving. When Rodney King got done up by those cops, the video was grainy and they got away with it. But now? Now we have clean quality, up-close shots and the people who run the system are still saying no, there is no crime here. RZA on prison being the new slavery: There’s that stat: 1 in 3 black men will go to prison in their lifetime compared with 1 in 17 white men. RZA: Exactly, slavery just meant that 3 to 5 million Americans were providing free labor for the entire country. After the civil war, they were freed but they filled the jails with blacks, and now they working again. Seven out of nine Wu-Tang members have been in jail [RZA has been arrested 15 times] and they’ve said, they get 50 cents a day for their work. Where’s the profit going? They’re building highways, running industries, and you come to find these institutions are privately owned business. It’s same thing all over again. Another one?!?! Tension is at an all time high in Missouri after a suburban St. Louis officer killed 18-year-old Antonio Martin just two miles from the city where Mike Brown was murdered. Details are skimpy but some witnesses report that after Martin was shot (and still breathing) officers allowed his body to lay in the street for two hours before his corpse was carted away in an unmarked van. Sound familiar???? The Saint Louis Post-Dispatch reports: A Berkeley police officer fatally shot a suspect who pointed a gun at him late Tuesday, St. Louis County police said early today. Police did not identify the person killed but Toni Martin, who was at the scene, said he was her 18-year-old son, Antonio Martin. Several protesters also arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting. Many stayed overnight. St. Louis County police said the incident started about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday as the Berkeley officer “was conducting a routine business check” at the Mobil gas station at 6800 North Hanley Road. The officer saw two people outside the station, got out of his vehicle and approached them. One of the suspects pulled out a handgun and fired at the officer. “Fearing for his life, the Berkeley Officer fired several shots, striking the subject, fatally wounding him,” the release from the county police said. “The second subject fled the scene.” Berkeley police requested that the county department’s Crimes Against Persons Unit handle the investigation of the shooting. Detectives “recovered the deceased subject’s handgun at the scene,” the release from county police said. For at least two hours, the body remained on the parking lot just in front of the gas station as police investigated the shooting. Berkeley police cars were on either side. A Berkeley police car was later towed away. The station appeared to have security cameras that are trained on the parking lot. Toni Martin said her son was with his girlfriend at the time of the shooting. The girlfriend remained at the scene but declined to talk to a reporter. Just after the shooting, several dozen people gathered outside the gas station, which was ringed by crime scene tape. The crowd at the station included ministers and some of the people who have been active in the protests related to the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, 18, by a Ferguson police officer in August. At one point, as some of the protesters grew rowdy, explosive flashes were set off. It was unclear by who. This ish is CRAZY, 2014 couldn’t even end before we had another shooting!!! WTF?!?! Man Rejected By Woman On Facebook Charged With Burning Down House Social media can lead to new connections but it can also bring unwanted attention. Via My Fox 8 reports: A Kentucky man is facing charges of burglary and arson after allegedly burning down the house of a woman who rejected him on Facebook. “I definitely hate to see this for my sister,” said Samantha Beagle, the victim’s sister. Samantha Beagle and her husband tried to save her sister’s home, but it was too late. “My husband actually pushed the front door open and we had to jump off the front porch. There was no going in, smoke was just rolling out,” Beagle said. “This is one of those tragic situations where somebody is now without a home and for such a minor reason. It’s disturbing,” said Major Robert Warfel, with the Frankfort Police Department. Major Warfel says the homeowner, 22-year-old Joanie Yount, was being harassed online by 37-year-old James Graham. “She had some comments posted by this individual on her Facebook page about some pictures she had. She rebuffed those and it’s kind of what set this all in motion,” he said. “It got to the point that she was very aggravated,” Samantha Beagle said. Beagle says Graham was an acquaintance but Joanie Yount was not interested in a relationship. “She doesn’t want a relationship, she just wants people to leave her alone. When it comes to stuff like that, either be decent or don’t bother her at all,” she said. However, authorities say Graham didn’t back off. Police say he found an unlocked door, let himself inside and started a fire in Yount’s bedroom. Fortunately, Yount and her 3-year-old son were not home at the time. Beagle says she can’t imagine what Graham would have done if Yount was home at the time. The home suffered smoke and water damage, which destroyed the floors and ceilings in some of the rooms. The single mother and her son were forced to find another place to stay. Yount has picked up a second job to help replace her son’s Christmas presents that were destroyed in the fire. A Connecticut woman is rightfully outraged after learning that police had her 10-year-old daughter handcuffed with guns drawn while arresting the adult that she was with on drug charges. via Fox News St. Louis A young girl was put in handcuffs when a family friend she was with was arrested in Middletown, CT. Kenneth Ford, 27, of Middletown, is a friend of the girl’s mother and was helping drive the fifth grader to basketball practice. According to the arraignment report from the Middletown Police Department, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, the department’s narcotics unit tried to serve Ford, a convicted felon, with an active arrest warrant. Detectives located Ford at the Woodrow Wilson Middle School at around 7:45 p.m. and saw him go into the school, where he stayed for several minutes. Police continued to follow Ford for an hour. Ford first went to Biefield, where he met with someone in a Jeep Wrangler. Police saw Ford hand the other person an item, and the other person gave him money. Ford then drove back to the school and went inside. At around 8:45 p.m. Ford left the school with a female, who was later identified as a 10-year-old girl. The two got in the car and drove to the South Main Liquor Store, left the car running with the girl inside and went into the liquor store. At this point police decided to engage the suspect, and waited outside the store for him. When he came out the police identified themselves and one detective drew a gun. Ford is a convicted felon who is known to carry handguns. The police then reportedly apprehended the man before handcuffing the 10-year-old girl. Ford was then handcuffed. Meanwhile, the girl was in the car screaming. A detective asked her to get out of the car, and then put her in handcuffs. Ford asked the detective to call the girl’s mother, who verified that she was 10 years old. According to Canna Chaney, the girl’s mother, the handcuffs were on her daughter for a while before she received the call. Canaa Chaney, the girl’s mother, says Ford is an old friend and was helping her out because she just moved to Connecticut from North Carolina three weeks ago and doesn’t have a car. Cory Brinson, the lawyer that Chaney retained in this case, said police picked an inappropriate time to arrest Ford. “They watched him pick her up from the school. They could have executed this warrant at another time, but did not and put her in harm’s way. Threw her up against the car, handcuffed her, drew their guns and scared her half to death. It didn’t have to happen like that,” Brinson said. When police searched the car and Ford they found four cell phones, gold teeth, seven baggies of crack cocaine weighing .565 ounces and $2882 in cash. Obviously the man being arrested is heavily to blame for engaging in all of this criminal activity with a child in his care and the mother should certainly be more selective with whom she allows to be responsible for her child, but SURELY these officers could tell that this young girl was a child and not an adult accomplice. Most recently Syleenah Johnson, a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, wrote a scathing Facebook post on the gross depiction of Greek life. “Our letters are sacred and should be treated as such,” wrote Johnson about the program. “This show ridicules and demeans what we hold dear and what we stand for.
