The Slizzard Struggle: Texas Woman Sentenced To Life In Prison After 6th DUI Conviction

In case you needed another reason not to drink and drive… Texas Woman Sentenced To Life In Prison After 6th DUI A Texas jury certainly made an example out of a woman who was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol for the sixth time in a row when they sentenced her to life in prison. via CBS DFW A 44-year-old Central Texas woman has been sentenced to life in prison for her sixth driving while intoxicated conviction. A Hays County jury on Wednesday sentenced Rose Ann Davidson of San Marcos. Investigators say Davidson was arrested in July 2012 on Interstate 35 after being pulled over by a Kyle police officer. Police say Davidson, whose five previous DWI convictions go back to 1996, was driving erratically and had an open container of beer in her vehicle. Prosecutors say Davidson served time in prison for her previous alcohol-related convictions. One less consistently drunk person behind the wheel doesn’t sound like such a bad thing to us….but do you think this jury was too harsh in sentencing this woman to a life behind bars? Shutterstock

For Discussion: Comedian Louis C.K. Says Smartphones Are Toxic, Especially For Kids — Do You Agree? [Video]

Does he have a point? Comedian Louis C.K. went on Conan O’Brien this week and made some really good points about the dangers of cellphones. Besides the obvious harm in texting and driving he also discusses how they highlight a disconnect in humanity and promote bullying for kids: I think these things are toxic, especially for kids…they don’t look at people when they talk to them and they don’t build empathy. You know, kids are mean, and it’s ’cause they’re trying it out. They look at a kid and they go, ‘you’re fat,’ and then they see the kid’s face scrunch up and they go, ‘oh, that doesn’t feel good to make a person do that.’ But they got to start with doing the mean thing. But when they write ‘you’re fat,’ then they just go, ‘mmm, that was fun, I like that.’ Do you see Louis’ point or do you think he has a darker attitude toward life than the actual reality?

For Discussion: Federal Tax Expert Says “Staying Unmarried Is Tax Shelter For Poor-Low-Income-Welfare Folks”

Tax Expert: “Staying Unmarried Is Tax Shelter For The Poor” He makes a valid point here on how “the system” works… Via CNS News: Federal tax expert Gene Steuerle said at a discussion on low-wage workers on Tuesday at the Capitol that government social welfare programs penalize low-income people for being married. “Staying unmarried is the tax shelter for the poor,” Steuerle, a fellow at the Urban Institute and former deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury for tax analysis in the Ronald Reagan administration, said at an event to release a survey commissioned by Oxfam America on low-wage workers in the United States. The survey states that 33 million Americans earn less than $10 an hour. Respondents to the survey (done by telephone from July 2 to July 9, 2013 of 804 low-wage workers) said they believe it is more common for middle-class people to fall out of the middle class (76 percent) than for low-income people to rise to the middle class (12 percent). Steuerle’s remarks followed those of Tianna Gaines-Turner, a child care worker from Philadelphia who earns $10 an hour and is raising three children with her husband, who works at a grocery store for $8 an hour. When CNSNews.com asked her to explain how she lost federal benefits when she decided to get married, Gaines-Turner shared her story. “They don’t encourage people to get married,” Gaines-Turner said. “A lot of these programs are set up for people to stay stagnated and to stay in the situation in which they are in.” Gaines-Turner explained that if she married the father of her children, who was living with them, she would lose benefits. If she told them she was living with the children’s father, the government would take action to make him pay child support and penalize her for having access to his income. “So basically I did not report that he lived in the home with us,” Gaines-Turner said. “I reported that I was a single parent. “If I had reported that he was in the home, they wanted to go after him for child support, because they want the fathers to pay to take care of their children,” said Gaines-Turner, who decided to forgo benefits to marry the father of her children.” Gaines-Turner said she thinks fathers should support their children, but couples should not be penalized for marrying and living in the same house with their children. “Unfortunately, the system is not set up – I’m not going to say reward – but it’s not set up to encourage people to have families; to build on what the American Dream is really about is family values,” Gaines-Turner said. “That’s what I was brought up on. “Family values, family dreams, is for two people who love each other to be able to get married,” Gaines-Turner said. “I wanted to show my children, especially my daughters, and my sons, that if you love this person and you want to be together, you do the right thing and you get married,” said Gaines-Turner, who also has three stepchildren. “You don’t stay shacked up. And, unfortunately, we were penalized for that,” Gaines-Turner said. SMH. Discuss…

SMH: Woman Battles Ex-Boyfriend In Court Over Frozen Embryos After He Says No To Children And Dumps Her

Damn, he dumped her and left her with the embryos. Woman Battles Ex In Court For Right To Embryos Fighting over test-tube babies…really? According to Mail Online A doctor who froze embryos with her boyfriend after she was diagnosed with cancer is now battling him in court after he broke up with her and said he no longer wants children. Karla Dunston, 42, maintains that she has the right to have her biological children and should control the future of the embryos, while her ex-boyfriend Jacob Szafranski, 32, argues that he never agreed to give up his say in the matter. The Illinois Supreme Court is expected to reach a decision on whether it will hear Szafranski v. Dunston this month – a decision which will no doubt affect thousands of future would-be parents. Dunston has since gone on to carry and give birth to a son – using a donor egg and donor sperm, Szafranski’s attorney confirmed. But he added that this does not affect the outcome of the case as the court distinguishes between a child that is biological and ‘essentially adopted’. The couple, who met through their work in a Chicago hospital, had been dating for just five months when Dunston was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in March 2010. This is an interesting case. Knowing that the chemotherapy could leave her infertile, she asked Szafranski if he would provide his sperm so that she could freeze embryos for potential future use. He agreed and one week later, he provided a sample at Northwestern Hospital’s fertility clinic, the Chicago Tribune reported. ‘It was a very emotional time and I was just trying to support Karla the best way I could,’ the firefighter and former nurse told the newspaper. Dunston, in a court deposition, added: ‘I thought about my different options, of using a sperm donor or someone that I knew for many years and that was a wonderful person. ‘So I decided to go with someone that I thought was a wonderful person and I trusted.’ At the time, the couple also signed a document that stated ‘no use can be made of these embryos without the consent of both partners’. They met up with an attorney and a second agreement that gave Dunston sole control of the fertilized eggs was drawn up – but the couple never signed it. Two months after the hospital visit, Szafranski broke up with Dunston via text message. He said he had initially been honored to help out his girlfriend, but later had reservations. ‘I have the right not to be a father,’ he said. ‘It’s something I take very seriously and feel very strongly about.’ Should the embryos be declared her property to do whatever she wants with them or should he have a say on whether he wants to be a father? Ciara even admits to a moments during a performance when she forgot the words to am iconic Diana Ross song: “I forgot the words. I was just recently performing at a really nice event, it was a private event. And it was like you know, some of my peers, Jamie Foxx to Pharrell and Mary J. Blige and just like people in our music were there. And sometimes when you’re around your own peers and friends, I don’t know why you’re like, you really wanna be on point because you know they know the words. And I was singing Diana Ross’ “Upside Down” and I repeated the first two bars like three times. It was weird. I messed up completely. Florida Crazies: Man Attacks Mom’s Boyfriend With Samurai Sword Over Can Of Shrimp

Only in Florida … Florida Man Attacks Mom’s Boyfriend For Stealing Shrimp Via Orlando Sentinel reports: A Samurai sword-wielding, knife-throwing Volusia County man attacked his mother’s boyfriend over a missing can of shrimp Saturday morning, an arrest report said. Jayson Laughman, 34, of Deltona used a sword to break down a door and threw kitchen knives at family members after his mother’s boyfriend accused him of taking a can of shrimp, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Laughman told deputies he didn’t remember everything that happened during the fight because he “went into code red and lost his temper,” the report said. Michael Airhart, 52, and Laughman had a “heated verbal argument” before agreeing to go outside and “engage in a physical fight” at the home they share located in the 700 block of North Firewood Drive at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Laughman threatened Airhart with a statue, but the fight outside did not escalate past that, according to the report. Thinking the fight was over, Airhart returned to his bedroom with Laughman’s mother. The couple was watching television when Laughman started breaking through the bedroom door with a Samurai style metal sword, the report said. Once inside the bedroom, Laughman made threats that he would use the sword to hurt Airhart, deputies say. The couple was able to calm Laughman down and he left the room, but returned almost immediately and started throwing two kitchen knives at Airhart, deputies said. Airhart was able to escape the bedroom through a sliding-glass door without being injured. During the investigation, Laughman complained of chest pains. He was transported to Florida Fish Memorial Hospital, where deputies questioned him. Although deputies arrested Laughman and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, he remains in the hospital. Florida breeds a special kind of crazy doesn’t it?

Ain’t Isht Moms: Florida Woman Arrested After Posting Photo Of Herself Dangling Baby Over Balcony On Instagram

Lock this beyotch up ! Woman Arrested After Posting Photo Of Herself Dangling Baby Over Balcony On Instagram Via Tampa Bay News 9 reports: A 25-year-old woman faces child neglect charges after posting a photo on social media that showed her dangling her baby over an apartment balcony, 12 feet off the ground. Friends of Aisha Jean Clark called Tampa police on Tuesday after spotting the photo on Instagram. Police said when they arrived at her apartment on Nuccio Parkway, they asked Clark if she knew why they were there. They said she laughed and went inside the apartment to get her iPad, pulled up her Instagram account, and showed them the picture. Police then arrested Clark and she allegedly told them, “I was mad and I was making a point. I can do what I want with my baby. Nobody can stop me.” In the criminal report, an officer concluded, “This single act would reasonably be expected to have resulted in serious physical injury or substantial risk of death to the infant.” Clark and her baby were wearing the same clothes as they were in the photo. When asked outside the jail if she dangled her child, she responded by saying, “If you all don’t get out of my face…You need to get out of my face.” When asked about being charged with child neglect of her own child, she said, “I don’t care, you get out of my face.” When asked why she would take the picture, she repeated the same answer. Finally, when asked if she had nothing to say, Clark said, “Boy, you’re lucky you’re on camera because I will snap on you.” She then walked back inside the jail. So we’re throwing filters on child endangerment pics now? Continue reading

Race Matters: Bill Cosby And Don Lemon Discuss “No-groes” And Black Men Needing To Raise Their Kids

Bill Cosby And Don Lemon Discuss “No-groes” And Black Men What exactly is “no-groes” you ask??? According to Mediaite: CNN anchor Don Lemon has, of late, turned the focus of his frequent conversations on race to the idea of personal responsibility in the African American community. On Saturday night’s edition of CNN Newsroom, Lemon continued that controversial trend with comic legend Bill Cosby, who has also felt the heat of controversy on the subject. Cosby talked to Lemon about young black men raising their kids, over-medication of juvenile inmates, and may have even coined a new word: “No-groes.” Legendary comic actor Bill Cosby has also stirred controversy by airing grievances against his community, but neither Lemon nor Cosby have backed away from their criticisms. In Saturday night’s interview, Lemon asked Cosby to reflect on the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington, and what kind of African American leaders are needed now. “I think it has to come from the universities,” Mr. Cosby began. ” I think, women, strongly because when you see 70%, in research, that says they are the leaders of the household, what we need is for people to realize I want to raise my kid. I want to go back and get my three kids. I want to take on that responsibility. I want to love my children.” He added that one of the sights he’d like to see more of is what he saw at the recent Essence Festival, “walking around to see, yeah, to see a black male with his child on the shoulders and holding.” He also encouraged young people who might not be able to go to a prestigious college to “go to community college. Okay, you backed up and didn’t do well. You quit school but now you find you need that high school credential. Go to the community college.” Later in the interview, Mr. Cosby talked about what he sees as an overemphasis on medicating juvenile inmates, versus counseling. “If you drug these people, and then you release them, and there’s no prescription for them to get to take to do the same thing, and they go back to the same place,” he said, adding “Now, about this time, this is when you hear the no-groes jump up and say ‘Why don’t you talk about the good things?’” “Because the good things happen to be taking care of themselves pretty well,” he answered. “We are trying to help those genius’, those not genius’, people who deserve, because they are human beings on this earth, in the United States of America, we are trying to get them in a position so they will understand and want to.” Lemon asked “Why is it so hard for some people to get that message, to hear that message, to receive that message, and without lashing out?” “Well, it’s because they feel, I think they feel embarrassed,” Cosby replied, and related a story about Sammy Davis, Jr. “We were in playing in a routine, and I told him I knew something. He said no you don’t. I said yes, I do. I said it. He said no, that’s not the way it goes. I said the same thing louder. He said, ‘Bill, saying it loud don’t make it right.’” What do you think about Bill’s views? WENN/Instagram Continue reading
