Another Day, Another Government Report: Suicide Rates Go Up And Down With The Economy

Suicides in the United States appear to increase in hard times and decrease during years of prosperity, according to a new government report. The image of people jumping from windows after the stock market crash of 1929 graphically illustrates the pattern detected by researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. “The overall suicide rate rises and falls in connection with the economy,” said lead researcher Feijun Luo, a health economist in the division of violence prevention at the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. “The strongest association between business cycles and suicides was among working-age people 25 to 64 years old,” he said. Co-author Dr. Alexander E. Crosby, a medical epidemiologist in the division of violence prevention at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, said economic hardship may trigger suicidal impulses in those already at risk of killing themselves. “Suicide results from an interaction of a number of different factors,” Crosby said. “Other studies have shown there is an association between suicide and unemployment, suicide and economic issues, and it can make vulnerable people more prone to be at risk for suicidal behavior,” he said. The report is published online April 14 in the American Journal of Public Health. The researchers found suicide rates spiked during the Great Depression (1929-1933), at the end of the New Deal (1937-1938), during the oil crisis of 1973-1975, and the double-dip recession of 1980-1982. But fewer people killed themselves during periods of economic expansion, such as the World War II years (1939-1945) and between 1991 and 2001, when the economy grew rapidly and unemployment was low. Commenting on the study, M. David Rudd, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, said that these “interesting findings confirm what many have been thinking from an anecdotal perspective over the last several years.” Rudd agreed that those most likely to kill themselves in bad economic times are those already at risk of suicide. “It’s fairly well established that upwards of 90% of those taking their own lives suffer from a diagnosable mental illness at the time, with the overwhelming majority not being in active treatment,” he said. The difference in impact across age groups is not a surprise, given that those hardest hit face the most pressing economic demands, Rudd added. The youngest and oldest groups probably experience relatively less economic pressure, he pointed out. “Prevention efforts need to focus on recognition and more effective response to psychiatric illness, particularly in primary care settings,” he said. You Can’t Be Serious…Florida Is Ready To Pass An Anti-Sagging Law

Really? A bill?? We don’t want to see men’s underwear either but the government is going to tell people how to dress now??? State Senator Gary Siplin has been working on a bill aimed at a school’s dress code policy for six years and he’s close to making it law. SB 228 and House version, HB 61, makes it against the law when teens wear their pants so low you can see their underwear. The proposed rule under the school code of conduct applies to boys and girls. The Senate version passed without any dissenting votes. The saggy pants fashion among teens is bad enough to inspire this song on American Idol a couple of seasons ago. The opening lyrics say, “Pants on the ground. Pants on the ground, looking like a fool with your pants on the ground.” Florida lawmakers agree with “General” Larry Platt’s song and are fast approving a bill banning clothing that shows underwear in public schools. Mike Davis, a senior at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg, says he supports the bill. “You should dress appropriately for school. It’s a business. It’s the place training you to become the person you will be in life.” A local school principal agrees wholeheartedly: Principal Kevin Gordon says school administrators are sending a clear message on what’s appropriate for school and the workforce. “If you are not dressed appropriately, then you’re not ready for school. If you are not ready for school, you’re not ready to be successful,” says Gordon. He adds, “Those are patterns students get into. We try to create patterns that are going to be patterns of success.” Do you think the government has a right to dictate how people dress?? Source

Epitome Of A Bad Mother: Woman Who Witheld Cancer Meds From Her Son Sentenced To 8-10 Years In Prison!!

This is definitely a sad story, but it kinda makes you angry at the same time. LAWRENCE, Mass. — A woman who withheld potentially life-saving medications from her autistic, cancer-stricken son was sentenced Friday to eight to 10 years in prison by a judge who said her actions “really do chill one’s soul.” Kristen LaBrie was convicted of attempted murder Tuesday for withholding at least five months of at-home chemotherapy treatments for her son, Jeremy Fraser. The boy died at age 9 in 2009. LaBrie, 38, wept and apologized before Judge Richard Welch handed down her punishment in Lawrence Superior Court. “I am remorseful for my actions and I wish I could have done things differently,” LaBrie told the judge in a courtroom packed with sobbing family members and friends of both LaBrie and the boy’s father, Eric Fraser. “If I could do it differently, I would, because I certainly miss my son, and I think about him every day and I wish he could be with me and my family,” she said. Jeremy Fraser was severely autistic, nonverbal and developmentally delayed. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma shortly after he turned 7 in 2006. His oncologist testified that she told LaBrie that her son’s cancer had a cure rate of about 85 percent to 90 percent under an intensive, two-year treatment plan that included doses of chemotherapy to be given during hospital stays and clinic visits as well as at-home medications LaBrie was supposed to administer at home. LaBrie testified that she largely followed doctor’s orders during the first four phases of his treatment. But she acknowledged that she stopped giving him the at-home medications during the final phase of treatment because she could not bear to see how much pain and suffering the side effects of the medication caused him. Many of LaBrie’s family attempted to plead with the judge to be lenient on her: LaBrie’s older son, Matthew, 18, wrote a letter to the judge asking for leniency. “My mother was nothing but unbelievably kind, caring and completely devoted to Jeremy in every aspect of her life,” he wrote. He described his mother sitting by Jeremy’s bedside while he was treated for cancer at Massachusetts General Hospital. “Something like that takes a toll on a person and after all that, could anybody so easily sit by and watch while a cure is making a child feel worse?” Jeremy’s uncle, Andrew Fraser, spoke to the judge before sentencing, saying he wanted to represent Jeremy and Jeremy’s father, Eric, who was killed in a motorcycle accident seven months after Jeremy died. Andrew Fraser said his brother would have asked for a “fair and just” punishment for LaBrie, despite the contentious relationship they had. Do you think that the sentence the judge handed down was fair, too harsh, or not harsh enough??? Source

Coon of The Day: Gucci Mane Has Been Arrested…Again

Radric just can’t get right. DECATUR, Ga. – DeKalb County Police say Radric Davis, also known as Gucci Mane, was arrested by the DeKalb County Fugitive Squad Friday. Davis was arrested while visiting his probation officer at the Georgia Department of Corrections Probation Office on Sylvan Road in Atlanta, say authorities. Davis is charged with battery, a misdemeanor but as a result of the arrest will be also charged with violating his probation. Davis is on probation for previous unrelated charges. Police say they arrested Davis on a warrant that stated he intentionally caused visible bodily harm to a female by pushing her out of a moving vehicle. Davis is being held in the DeKalb County Jail. Well ladies and gentlemen its been a good run, but Gucci may not be seeing the light of day anytime soon. We’re pretty sure that when the judge takes a look at his rap sheet (not to mention that cotdamn ice cream on his face) that he’s gonna throw the biggest book he can find at him. Burr! Source

Was Malcolm X Hustlin’ Gay Sex For That Paper?

Uh oh… somebody’s sayin’ Malcolm was gay for pay? Manning Marable’s 594-page biography Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention was released on April 4th, and the book has aroused more conversation about the slain Civil Rights leader’s sexuality than a little bit, but folks should know Marable isn’t the first to say Malcolm X had same-sex relations. Bruce Perry, with his 1991 biography, Malcolm: The Life of a Man Who Changed Black America has that honor. Blogger Irene Monroe recently wrote about the topic, and she raises the point that some of the “relations” Perry claims Malcolm had were of the “gay-for-pay” variety: According to Perry, Malcolm’s same-sex dalliances date back to childhood, where he enjoyed being masturbated or fellated. In his 20s, Perry informs us, Malcolm had a sustained sexual relationship with a transvestite named Willie Mae, and also he had sex with gay men for money, boasting he serviced “queers.” Monroe, who is a lesbian activist, scholar and public theologian, cautions the LGBTQ community from jumping to embrace Malcolm as one of their own, explaining that the context in which Malcolm allegedly engaged in said behaviors is important to consider: I am not heterosexist apologist, but if we as LGBTQ people use this era of Malcolm’s life to claim him as gay, we misunderstand the art and survivalism of street hustling culture. Similarly, if we, as African Americans, use this era of Malcolm’s life to dismiss that he engaged in same-sex relationships, many will miss the opportunity to purge ourselves of homophobic attitudes. When Malcolm came to Boston to live with his older half-sister, Roxbury’s Ella Little Collins, he was 16, having dropped out of school at 15. With no job skills and looking for the most expedient route to acquire money, Malcolm peddled cocaine, broke into homes of Boston’s well-to-do, gambled big at poker games, and unabashedly serviced gay men for pay. While it can be argued that Malcolm’s same-sex encounters were not solely financially motivated, let us also not dismiss that the only evidence we do have is the context in which he was. We all know from Alex Haley’s book that Detroit Red was a wild cat… but hustlin’ a*s? Does this new information, if it is true, change the way we look at Malcolm X? Should people overlook his homosexual dalliances, if he had them, as merely a means of survival? Could Malcolm be proof that gay people can turn straight? So many questions… Source
