Wait… what now? An Arizona judge has ruled that Tuscon schools must change the way they’ve been teaching Mexican-American history in the schools because the current curriculum is too inflammatory. An administrative law judge found the program’s curriculum was teaching Latino history and culture “in a biased, political, and emotionally charged manner,” and upheld state officials’ findings that it violated a state law passed in 2010. The Tucson Unified School District had appealed a decision by the law’s principal backer, then-state schools superintendent Tom Horne, to shut down the program. Horne left office at the end of 2010, but his successor, John Huppenthal, backed Horne’s ruling in June. Huppenthal said Tuesday’s ruling shows “that it was the right decision.” “In the end, I made a decision based on the totality of the information and facts gathered during my investigation — a decision that I felt was best for all students in the Tucson Unified School District,” he said in a written statement. Under the law, the state can withhold 10% of its funding for the school district — about $15 million a year — until the district changes the course. In a written statement, Tucson Superintendent John Pedicone said the school board’s lawyers are reviewing the ruling, and board members will discuss it at their January 3 meeting. During their appeal, district officials pointed out that an audit commissioned by Huppenthal praised the program and found “no observable evidence” that the classes violated state law. A witness for the school system argued that teaching students “historical facts of oppression and racism” was less likely to promote “racial resentment” — something specifically banned by the 2010 law — than ignoring that history. In Tuesday’s ruling, administrative law judge Lewis Kowal said the auditors observed only a limited number of classes. He added, “Teaching oppression objectively is quite different than actively presenting material in a biased, political, and emotionally charged manner.” “Teaching in such a manner promotes social or political activism against the white people, promotes racial resentment, and advocates ethnic solidarity, instead of treating pupils as individuals,” Kowal wrote. He cited a lesson that taught students that the historic treatment of Mexican-Americans was “marked by the use of force, fraud and exploitation,” and a parent’s complaint that one of her daughters, who was white, was shunned by Latino classmates after a government course was taught “in an extremely biased manner.” The 2010 law also bans courses that “promote the overthrow of the United States government,” are “designed for a specific ethnic group” or advocate “ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.” What’s the point of teaching kids history at all if we’re going to sugarcoat it? Are we going to stop teaching about slavery next? None of this even begins to sound like democracy… Source

What happened to cheerleaders just spreading cheer and happiness and having sportsmanlike conduct??? A Buffalo girls basketball team was suspended after the players allegedly used a racial slur as part of their pregame cheer. Tyra Batts, the sole African-American on the Kenmore East High School’s squad, told the Buffalo News that her teammates would hold hands before the game, say a prayer and then shout “One, two, three (n——).” The practice came to light when she Tyra was suspended for getting into a fight about the use of racial slurs during practice, according to the newspaper. She said that she was alarmed by the cheer, but had been outnumbered and told that the use of the slur was just a team tradition. “I said, ‘You’re not allowed to say that word because I don’t like that word,’” she told the newspaper. “They said, ‘You know we’re not racist, Tyra. It’s just a word, not a label.’ I was outnumbered.” The 15-year-old eventually exploded after a practice when a teammate called her a ‘black piece of (expletive).’ She says she got into a fight with the girl later in school. “It was a buildup of anger and frustration at being singled out of the whole team,” she told the newspaper. Tyra’s suspension was shortened after the principal learned of the racial allegations. At least a dozen girls were suspended. Some of the team’s former players who took to Twitter seemed to have little knowledge of any “tradition” the team had of racial chants. “You (racist) b—-,” a 2010 graduate tweeted. “Glad I’m out of there.” Another one added, “Haha oh yeah that Ken East crap that’s going on. I want no part in that.” Where are the parents??? Seriously… SMH. Source

C’mon son. They knew they were out of pocket for this one. Parents at a Florida elementary school are up in arms after a Hooters waitress was brought in to talk about her job to a group of special needs kids during a career event. “It’s just the wrong message,” Ashley Dominicci, 32, whose son is a sixth-grader at Calvin A. Hunsinger School in Clearwater, told the St. Petersburg Times. “I feel like we’re telling them (the students) that you’re the bad kids, and this is all you’ll be in life.” Dominicci said she wasn’t knocking the busty wing-slingers – “They’re very hard-working,” she said — but that she thought students at the school should set higher goals for themselves. School principal Stephani Bessette told Dominicci in an email that the point of waitress Brittany Morgan’s appearance was to show that working at a restaurant was a good way to pay for college, the Times reported. “Working as a waiter or waitress in order to achieve higher goals should be commended,” Bessette wrote, according to the Times. Morgan said she understood why parents might be upset, but that there wasn’t anything inappropriate about her talk. Besides, she left the hot pants and tank top at home. “Most of us are going to school,” Morgan told the Times. “We’re aspiring to do other things in life. This isn’t our career.” Earlier this month, parents at a California elementary school were similarly outraged after adult film star Sasha Grey read a book a group of first- and -third grade students during a literacy event. What is going on in this world? Really, the principal thought THIS was a good idea? No wonder our kids are being outperformed by students from across the world. SMH. Source More On Bossip!
