A Mysterious Force Is Pulling Pioneer 10 Back Toward the Sun

I kind of dig space—especially the unexplained—so today I'm in a bit of a tizzy. Pioneer 10, you see—which left our solar system in 1983—is slowly being drawn back toward the Sun by an unknown force. No, it's not gravity, it's something else. Something mysterious. Something barely perceptible that is tugging at the probe with about 10 million times weaker force than gravity. Potentially a “new force of nature” (their words, not mine). Most of the obvious causes, including malfunction or gravity, have been ruled out, reports the Telegraph: Scientists initially suspected that gas escaping from tiny rocket motors aboard the probes, or heat leaking from their nuclear power plants might be responsible. Both have now been ruled out. The team says no current theories explain why the force stays constant: all the most plausible forces, from gravity to the effect of solar radiation, decrease rapidly with distance. Scientists tracking the distant probe (now some seven billion miles from Earth), say that the probe's speed, presently 27,000mph, is being reduced by the force by about 6mph per century. Not much, but entirely noticeable and worthy enough that scientists like Dr. Duncan Steel, of Salford University, who is speculating this cosmic tug could question whether we know enough about gravity, the universe, and everything. http://gizmodo.com/5642007/a-mysterious-force-is-pulling-pioneer-10-back-toward-… added by: pjacobs51

Air Force’s Falcon Hypersonic Glider Disappears Mysteriously

The Air Force's Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2—designed to attack global targets at Mach 20—has disappeared nine minutes into its first test flight, just after separating from its booster. Contact was lost, and it hasn't been found yet. The Falcon was supposed to splash down in the Pacific Ocean after a 30-minute, 4,100-nautical-mile test flight. Not to be confused with the unmanned X-37B space shuttle—which launched on April 22—the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 blasted off last week from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on a Minotaur IV rocket. Instead of completing its flight, however, the Air Force lost all contact with the aircraft. According to DARPA's Johanna Spangenberg Jones: Preliminary review of data indicates the HTV-2 achieved controlled flight within the atmosphere at over Mach 20. Then contact with HTV-2 was lost. This was our first flight (all others were done in wind tunnels and simulations) so although of course we would like to have everything go perfectly, we still gathered data and can use findings for the next flight, scheduled currently for early 2011. Just that: The telemetry data signal vanished, and the aircraft is nowhere to be found. Being a semi-secret project, nothing else has been disclosed. The only logical explanations are 1) a massive structural failure, 2) Nazi UFOs or 3) somebody lost it in a beer garden. I will pick number two for the time being. The hypersonic glider is built by Lockheed Martin under a DARPA program. It's designed to launch conventional weapons against any target in the planet in just one hour. This capability makes it a perfect substitute for Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Unlike ICBMs loaded with conventional heads, the plane can't be mistaken with a nuclear missile, so it won't make other nuclear powers to hit the red button. Maybe. http://gizmodo.com/5526308/air-forces-falcon-hypersonic-glider-disappears-myster… added by: pjacobs51

White Stripes Complaint Leads Air Force To Pull Super Bowl Ad

Force says the ad soundtrack’s similarity to ‘Fell in Love With a Girl’ was unintentional. By Joel Hanek White Stripes’ Jack White Photo: MTV News The U.S. Air Force has pulled the ad in which the White Stripes claim a re-recording of their song was used without permission. The Detroit rock duo band alleged that the 30-second recruitment commercial that aired during Sunday’s Super Bowl used music from “Fell in Love With a Girl” without their consent. The ad has been taken down from the Air Force Web site, but a statement on the site says the association with the Stripes was unintentional. “The Air Force Reserve commissioned an original piece of music for its one-time, 30-second Super Bowl regional advertisement,” said Lt. Col. Leslie Pratt, Air Force Reserve Command director of public affairs. “As soon as we realized there was a question about our ad, we immediately pulled it and have no plan to re-use it. Our goal was only to attract the best and brightest Americans to become Citizen Airmen.” The statement also claims that a contractor, Fast Forward Music, was hired by their advertising agency to compose an original score of music. “We had no intention to use existing music from the White Stripes or any other performer,” Pratt said. “Any similarity to them or other artists was certainly not intentional.” Shortly after the ad aired, the Stripes took to their site to object to their implied backing of military recruitment. “We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of the White Stripes, our publishers, label or management,” the statement read. “The White Stripes take strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserve’s presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support.” Related Artists The White Stripes
