Did Karl Urban Accidentally Reveal Star Trek 2’s New Villain?

Or is he just effing with us? While doing press for his upcoming Dredd , Karl Urban seemed to let slip the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch ‘s Star Trek 2 character. Was he telling the truth or not? Right now, there is evidence for both sides. First, some background. 1. J.J. Abrams ‘ own origin story is based around his grandfather gifting him with a “Mystery Box.” It is, therefore, wonderfully ironic that he should be the current quarterback of the entire Star Trek franchise, a massive shared universe whose rabid fans are obsessive, meticulous and savvy enough to translate Shakespeare into its made-up language. Excuse me, one of its made-up languages. As a result, we still don’t know the name of the villain in the forthcoming Star Trek sequel. 2. Many years ago it leaked that Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci had delivered a script wherein Gary Mitchell – Captain Kirk’s Starfleet Academy chum turned ESP-monster from the early Trek episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” – would be the heavy. I personally heard this from a guy who was inside and had some intel. 3. The rumor goes that Abrams didn’t like this script and sent everyone back to the drawing board. A Gary Mitchell storyline in the “new universe” Star Trek comics (that only mouthbreathers like I read) appears, effectively “putting that story to use.” Then we started hearing that Khan Noonien Singh – you know, the guy from KHAAAAAAAN – was going to be the baddie. A casting offer to Benicio Del Toro seemed to confirm this – even though Khan is supposed to be a Sikh, not Hispanic, but only hardcore dweebs like to bring this up. 4. Benedict Cumberbatch (pictured above) is cast. He doesn’t look like a genetically enhanced poet-warrior. (But, really, who is to say?) It is accepted by most people that he is playing Khan. Then Simon Pegg says “ No Khan .” Fair enough. 5. Now today’s news. Karl Urban, in yapping about the upcoming Dredd , lets this slip to SFX : “[Benedict Cumberbatch’s] awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.” Wow, so it was Gary all along? Open and shut, right? But wait! 6. Just a few weeks back, Roberto Orci gave a list of Star Trek characters that are NOT in the film . Among them: Gary Mitchell. Here’s the thing. Normally, a gaffe from an actor during a press day is a great way to squeeze info out of someone. They are tired and they can’t remember what’s already out there and what is being held for strategic marketing reveals. (These are called SMRs in Hollywood.) (No they’re not, I just made that up.) However, I think Urban might be throwing a red herring on purpose. I had the good fortune to shmooze with the guy once – at the very genre-friendly Fantastic Fest in Austin. He was pitching Red , but we got to discussing Star Trek and “The Nrrd Life” in general and he struck me as someone who really got it. If ever there was a guy who’d be so on board to screw with the heads of fanboys, it’d be him. Luckily, Urban will be moderating the Masters of the Web panel at next week’s San Diego Comic-Con , and you can rest assured the online press (our own Jen Yamato among them) will put the screws to him. Personally, I think having Gary Mitchell is cooler than having Khan, but I’d prefer if the Trek brain trust were, you know, boldly going where no man had gone before. In a remake-happy culture, that may be too much to ask for. Anyway, here’s Captain Kirk and Gary Mitchell fighting on Delta Vega. Sally Kellerman and her creepy contact lenses can only look on. Rock of Ages: The No Biggie Kiss Between Alec Baldwin & Russell Brand

It’s going on seven years since Brokeback Mountain brought cowboys and leading men out of the closet – even if they weren’t exactly gay. But still, man on man snogging sessions still make some headlines as was the case recently with 30 Rock star Alec Baldwin and actor Russell Brand who share make-out time in the forthcoming Rock of Ages . THR caught up with Baldwin following the film’s Hollywood premiere. The two actors’ characters spell out their love for each other via the REO Speedwagon song “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and top it all off with a smooch. “It’s not like Brokeback Mountain, it’s not two leading men who you are used to getting down with some gorgeous young girl,” Baldwin told THR. “It’s a little more chaste because I’m older (than Brand).” So perhaps Baldwin is brandishing the cougar-equivalent for the male-set? Baldwin of course didn’t think it was a big deal (and hey, is it really? Glamsters have been making out for decades haven’t they?) “We live in an age, and I’m being imprecise here, where half the country gets it, and the other half doesn’t,” noted Baldwin. “I live where men and women who want to get married—who gives a shit? No one gives it a thought. It’s like seeing women in power. Or like seeing African American CEOs. We’re in a fully realized age of equality in all things and it’s not surprising or new. But there is that other half for whom that is surprising and new.” It should be noted that Baldwin is once again going to be a married man (to a woman just for the record) but no word on what the next Ms. Baldwin (if she takes his name by and by) thinks. Baldwin added that the U.S. still holds hang-ups over the gay thing compared to its fellow first-worlders across the pond where same-sex relationships are just part of the day to day. “America is still a place where people are fighting these culture wars.” [Source: THR ]

Rumor: Universal Wants Angelina Jolie to Direct 50 Shades of Grey?

File under WTF, Out of Left Field, and Most Probably Not Happening, Like Ever: According to Deadline , rumor has it that Angelina Jolie , coming off of her directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey , has been in the unofficial running to join the 50 Shades of Grey adaptation — not as Mrs. Robinson, not as some kinky bondage-enthusiast, but as… director. Mike Fleming reports from the floor of the rumor mill: “I’ve heard rumors about the possibility of Angelina Jolie having a conversation or two about directing it… The studio says that no discussions have been had, but they note that if she was interested, that the studio would be also. They loved her directorial debut, In The Land Of Blood And Honey .” I’m not sure what about Blood and Honey would suggest that Jolie is a great pick to direct the steamy erotica adaptation, though she has won “honors” in various men’s magazines for being the Sexiest Woman Alive, and those things ought to count for something. In any case, Fleming says, Jolie’s busy. “I’m told she’s completely focused on her next film, Maleficent , at Disney and isn’t entertaining other offers at this moment.” So maybe the Jolie train has already come and gone. Assuming so, which director would you like to see tackle 50 Shades of Grey ? I’ll start with a few: Adrian Lyne (via Deadline commenters). Just Jaeckin. John Waters. Go! [ Deadline ]

Should Star Trek’s Worf Get His Own Spin-Off Movie?

Movieline’s Klingon contingent aside, there are probably legions of faithful Star Trek fans who’d get behind series actor Michael Dorn and his idea to write and star in an indie spin-off movie around Worf, his Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine character. “I am serious,” he told TrekMovie.com, after revealing his very early plans at Phoenix Comic-Con. “I think there is a place for it. Straight to DVD or straight to cable. Who wouldn’t want to have this kind of thing going on?” Well, J.J. Abrams , for starters, given that all things new in the Star Trek world revolve around his forthcoming studio sequel . You think Abrams and Paramount would mind if Dorn (who, he says, are planning on Kickstarting a non- Star Trek drama to feature various Star Trek actor friends of his) just made a small little movie about Worf captaining a ship, fighting space terrorists? Well, yes. They would. But that shouldn’t keep Dorn or the Trekkers out there from harboring hope; despite his admission that he’s yet to go to his manager and his prospective direct-to-TV movie home SyFy to pitch his idea, Dorn exudes confidence that such a Worf spin-off might come to pass. “I have already started writing the script and excuse my language, but it’s f—ing great.” [ TrekMovie.com via giantfreakingrobot ]
