Old Racists, Ex-Colleagues Among Harvey Weinstein’s Latest Enemies

What week for Harvey Weinstein: Win a truckload of Oscars on Sunday, re-up on a PR war with the MPAA on Tuesday, and then today — as his company’s other notable French import Intouchables prepares for its U.S. premiere in New York City — start a trans-Atlantic flame war with France’s most infamously racist old coot. It’s like Linsanity, but for Hollywood megalomaniacs! Weinsanity! And there’s more . First though, here’s the notorious, ultra-conservative French nationalist and political firebrand asshole Jean-Marie Le Pen weighing in on Intouchables , the blockbuster buddy flick about (per a Weinstein Co. statement) “a wealthy, physically disabled risk taker, the picture of established French nobility, who lost his wife in an accident and whose world is turned upside down when he hires a young, good-humored, black Muslim ex-con as his caretaker.” I don’t know how one exclaims, ” Say whaaaa? ” in French, but it probably sounds something like this: That aforementioned Weinstein Company statement translates: “France is like this handicapped person stuck in this wheelchair, and we are going to have to wait for the help of these suburb youngsters and the immigration in general. I don’t subscribe to this point of view. It’s a movie, a novel. And we have to take it that way and not like an example for the future. It would be a disaster if France would find itself in the same situation as this poor handicapped person.” On the one hand, this is just Le Pen being Le Pen. Big deal. On the other, check out Harvey being Harvey — i.e. waiting a full month after the interview aired (he acquired Intouchables ‘ distribution and English-language remake rights last summer) to lay into the easiest, fattest target imaginable on his film’s behalf: “It’s not a surprise to hear such an intolerant statement from the man who founded and was president of the extreme-right, xenophobic, racist National Front party. Le Pen made a repulsive statement, representing a bigoted world view. And right now, Jean-Marie’s daughter, Marine Le Pen, is running for president of France as the leader of the National Front party — and she is fourth in the polls with almost 16% of the population intending to vote for her. That’s frightening to me, and I think it’s important to speak up and speak out against Le Pen and his ideas. That’s why I’m proud to bring THE INTOUCHABLES to American audiences. This movie is based on a true story, and it’s a funny, extremely entertaining illustration of how simple human connection trounces socioeconomic, religious and racial divides.” Perfect . Did I mention Intouchables premieres this evening as the Opening Night film of Lincoln Center’s prestigious Rendez-Vous with French Cinema series and opens May 25 in limited release? Ahem. Meanwhile, all of Harvey’s recent protesting-too-much has received one of its most devastating rebuttals to date from Mark Lipsky, the former indie exec turned filmmaker who got his start in the Weinsteins’ Miramax regime. That experience yielded today’s extraordinary takedown at indieWIRE , where Lipsky further exposed Harvey’s hypocritical, gratuitously self-serving and exploitative handling of his documentary Bully : I hate bullying and always have. I also have an abiding contempt for hypocrisy. If Harvey has, in fact, reformed, he needs to come out and say so publicly. He needs to own his past behavior, admit to his addiction – bullying is an addiction, after all, both to power and dominance – and pledge to never bully anyone again. If he’s looking for ink and controversy (and he certainly is) there’s no more honest or powerful way for him and the film to get it. Harvey, you have a rare opportunity with Bully to actually move the needle and leave the world a better place. I believe that you’d like to see bullying stop. I believe that you “want every child, parent, and educator in America to see “Bully,” and not just for the boxoffice. So get up on that incredibly high horse of yours and use that bully pulpit to assure children, parents and educators everywhere that if you can reform, anyone can. Light a fire, Harvey, for every kid that’s ever bullied someone and for every parent who taught them how. Ouch. Your move, Harvey. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Bish Please: “Catch Fade” Gabe Says He Ain’t Scurred Of Halle Berry’s New High-Powered Lawyer, Says He May Actually HELP His Case

Gabe says his heart don’t pump no kool-aid son! Halle Berry’s decision to dump her long time trusted and respected attorney, Neil Hersh, for legal pitbull, Stephen Kolodny, in her ongoing custody battle with Gabriel Aubry over their daughter Nahla, isn’t fazing the Canadian model and he feels this could actually help his case, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting. As RadarOnline.com previously reported, a judge ruled recently that Gabriel’s visitation with Nahla must be supervised, and that he isn’t allowed to have the little girl for overnight visits. The former couple’s bitter custody war was ramped up another notch in January when their nanny alleged that Aubry physically attacked her while she was holding Nahla, a claim Aubry vehemently denies. A police report was filed, but the Los Angeles City Attorney declined to press charges against Aubry. The Academy Award winning actress wants to move to France with her fiancé, actor, Olivier Martinez, and take Nahla with her, something Aubry is determined to prevent happening. “Halle was unhappy that the family law judge hasn’t made a ruling about her request to move to France,” an insider told RadarOnline.com. “The judge has indicated that more time is needed and more information needs to be gathered before a ruling is made. This wasn’t good enough for Halle, in Gabe’s opinion, so she fired Neil Hersh, who is greatly respected, and hired Stephen Kolodny because he is known as a bulldozer. “Neither Gabe nor his lawyer are scared or intimidated by Stephen. Gabe thinks this will help his case, because he thinks it shows how desperate and impatient she is. He doesn’t believe either that Halle is afraid for her safety, when was the last time you saw her taking Nahla to school with a bodyguard? He believes it’s just another plot she is hatching to keep Gabriel out of Nahla’s life.” Halle is really serious about being a swirly ninja in Paris huh? Looks like she’s in for a long fight in court because Gabe ain’t goin’ for that. via RadarOnline More On Bossip! Where’s The Meat? Artist Makes French Politicians Slightly Less Insufferable

This would never happen in America : “The two main candidates in this spring’s presidential election took a break from their mudslinging to crow. ‘This is a tremendous success for the French cinema,’ exclaimed President Nicolas Sarkozy on RTL radio Monday morning. ‘I adored The Artist of course.’ François Hollande, the Socialist challenger, said on his Web site, ‘Bravo to the entire cast of the film, and bravo to French cinema.'” [ NYT ]

Oscar Chat: Get to Know This Year’s Best Animated Feature Nominees

When the Academy announced its nominations last month for Best Animated Feature, two waves of surprise washed over Oscar watchers: Not only was Pixar left out in the cold for the first time in its history, but also two lesser-known films from abroad made the cut in the category: the noir-y French entry A Cat in Paris and the Spanish-language jazz-romance Chico and Rita . The directors of those films, along with Kung Fu Panda 2 helmer Jennifer Yuh Nelson, one of few female directors nominated this year, spoke with Movieline about the recognition from the Academy, technologies such as 3-D and motion capture, and their Oscar night excitement. So get to know three of the filmmakers from the animation community who could go home with a trophy on Sunday: For A Cat in Paris we have Alain Gagnol, who co-directed with Jean-Loup Felicioli, and for Chico and Rita we have Fernando Trueba, who directed along with Tono Errando and Javier Mariscal. (Fellow nominees Chris Miller [ Puss in Boots ] and Gore Verbinski [ Rango ] were not available to participate.) Animation nominees seem to have the most fun at the Academy Awards. What are you looking forward to most on Oscar Sunday? GAGNOL: Actually, Hollywood is the opposite of my world, so everything is amazing, incredible, and funny. But the most impressive part is to see, at the reach of my hand, some of my favorite directors. Scorsese and Spielberg gave me the desire to make movies. They gave me the strength to make my dreams come true. NELSON: I’m looking forward to a whole lot of people-watching. And going on a seriously cool date with the husband. TRUEBA: Well, being nominated is already a big prize for us. I didn’t know the animation nominees were supposed to have the most fun? How do you feel about the Best Picture category being expanded to nine films but having animation shut out? GAGNOL: For too many people, animated films are not genuine cinema. But I don’t think that is the problem here. I have to admit that without young children, most adults are not going to watch animated movies. They are concerned these films won’t have anything for them, and they will be bored. I also think that because there’s no such thing as a human face in animated cinema, seeing the actors and actresses in live-action films are very fascinating for the audience, and they may not think they have those celebrity images to relate to. NELSON: I think that the movies nominated are very deserving, and that the number spices it up. I would love to see animated films widen from a realm reserved for family entertainment and become just a technique used in all ranges of cinema. Once that happens, I think it will show up regularly in all categories. TRUEBA: I didn’t like it. To me [more nominations] is a wrong decision, and I don’t know anyone who prefers it this way. I think the most important prize has lost a lot of his charm. It’s almost impossible to know all of them. Too, too many. It’s much better [with] five. Do you see the Academy’s recent rule about motion-capture films as an attempt to emphasize traditional hand-drawn animation? GAGNOL: Computers are so useful that they tend to be everywhere. But they are perfect, and the limits of life are not an issue for them. Therefore, sometimes human beings seem to have been forgotten in the process. Hand-drawn animation is far from perfect but we can feel the sensitivity of the animator. But I don’t think that one kind of animation is better than the other one. After all, the most important thing is the story we want to tell. Computers are still not able to write stories. NELSON: The films chosen show a wide range of techniques, not just hand-drawn. Three of them are CG, so it’s nice to see that such different films were recognized. But computer or not, these films were created frame-by-frame by animators. Some mo-cap is so heavily worked by animators that it may as well be full animation. Whereas others are very automated. The question then becomes one of artistry. TRUEBA: Maybe, animation has today many different techniques and approaches. And it is not easy to dictate the rules now to such a complex field. But maybe something should be done.  Several live-action and animated films nominated this year, including top nominee Hugo , were released in 3-D. In your view, does 3-D help or hurt a film’s chances of taking home an Oscar? GAGNOL: I’m not a great fan of 3-D movies. In my opinion, it doesn’t bring anything really interesting to cinema. A well-composed picture can give all the feelings needed by a story. When a movie is good, you already have the feeling of being a part of it. NELSON: 3-D is a cinematic tool that can be used or abused. Used well, it is a true enhancement of the film. I enjoy seeing the boundaries being pushed on how we can simulate an immersive experience. Like surround sound, immersive picture can really make you feel the film all the more. But it has to be done well. TRUEBA: I really hate 3-D. This stuff is invented every decade and after a while, people get bored of it. For me 3-D makes movies lose their nature. It’s just for children and people who go occasionally to movies. Real moviegoers don’t need 3-D. And personally I can’t see 3-D. I’m strabic !!! Maybe you can assist some moviegoers in filling out their ballots: Who will win for Best Animated Short film? GAGNOL: I’m sorry I can’t answer that question because I haven’t yet had the opportunity to watch these films. NELSON: Oh please, I may be working for some of these people someday. I don’t want any of them mad at me. TRUEBA: La Luna. Who is accompanying you to the ceremony? GAGNOL: As I am coming from France, I think my jet lag will be with me all along. NELSON: My sweet husband will be with me, making sure I don’t trip in my heels. Also, since DWA has two films nominated, there will be a posse of great people including Melissa Cobb the producer of KFP2 , and Raymond Zibach, the very talented production designer. TRUEBA: My friend and co-director of Chico and Rita , Javier Mariscal, and my wife and producer, Cristina. How are you following this film? What projects are in the works? GAGNOL: I am working on a new feature film. It’s also a thriller for children but with an additional fantasy aspect. I have already worked on the script for more than two years, and Jean-Loup has drawn the first pictures. The action takes place in New York. One of the great advantages of making animated movies, as directors, is that we can go everywhere from our drawing table.  NELSON: I’m developing something, but it’s a secret at the moment. TRUEBA: I just finished a new movie, The Artist and the Model, my first movie in French, featuring Jean Rochefort, Aida Folch and Claudia Cardinale. Halle Berry’s Baby Daddy “Catch Fade” Gabe Avoids Criminal Charges In Nanny Smackdown

Good news for Gabriel Aubry. Gabriel flew off the handle last month when the nanny questioned him about not taking Nahla to school one day. According to the battery report, the nanny picked Nahla up during the confrontation, and Gabriel allegedly shoved her out the door with Nahla still in her arms. But L.A. City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan tells TMZ … Gabriel will NOT be charged because of “insufficient evidence.” Gabriel isn’t completely off the hook — as TMZ previously reported, a Dependency Court judge placed an order stating Aubry can only watch Nahla while under the supervision of a monitor … per a recommendation by the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services. So Aubry can only see his child under the supervision of a monitor, while Berry has petitioned a court to allow her to move to France with Nahla and fiance Olivier Martinez. When will the drama end? New York Yankees Perfume: Actually Coming Soon!

The New York Yankees have accomplished everything a baseball team possibly could on the field, having won 27 World Championships, by far the most history. But the squad had left no mark at all in the world of personal fragrances… until now! The Yankees have partnered with The Cloudbreak Group to launch a pair of scents –

Gabriel Aubry Avoids Criminal Charges in Nanny Case

Finally some good legal news today for Gabriel Aubry. Sources tell TMZ the Canadian model will NOT be charged criminally for allegedly shoving his daughter’s nanny a few weeks ago, an act that has resulted in numerous hearings and court battles between Aubry and ex-girlfriend Halle Berry. While a battery report was filed by the nanny in question, a Los Angeles County Attorney spokesman says there’s “insufficient evidence” against Gabriel to pursue any charges. However, there is still plenty to work out between Aubry, Berry and the L.A. Department of Children and Family Services, especially after Nahla told officials that she’s often frightened of her father, due to his outbursts of anger. For now, Aubry can only see his child under the supervision of a monitor, while Berry has petitioned a court to allow her to move to France with Nahla and fiance Olivier Martinez. [Photo: WENN.com]

Alessandra Sublet Awesome Bikini Pics of the Day

Who the fuck is Alessandra Sublet and why the fuck do I know what her pubic hair looks like… Well after much research it turns out she’s from France….she’s 35…despite looking 45….and she wears bikini bottoms that are too big for her…which works for me…because then I get to see the pubic hair so many girls forget to let grow out cuz by north american standards it is unacceptable…forgetting the whole eroticism of the whole thing….turning vaginas into bacteria ridden clean cut antiseptic feeling organs…instead of the floral, smell catching, feminine character I like to run my hands through… That’s not to say I find these pictures, or this woman hot…it’s just to say…the beach is alright place for fun.
