J.K. Simmons Reveals ‘Spider-Man 4’ Character Arc

‘J. Jonah Jameson was going to be somehow exiled or disgraced or demoted,’ actor tells MTV News at Sundance of scrapped film. By Eric Ditzian J.K. Simmons Photo: MTV News PARK CITY, Utah — We’ll probably never know the full extent of what Sam Raimi had planned for “Spider-Man 4,” including widespread rumors that John Malkovich would play the villain Vulture . Sony Pictures bailed on the project early last year and is currently rebooting the franchise with Marc Webb in the director’s chair. But pieces of Raimi’s aborted “Spider-Man” puzzle could drip out in the future. In fact, J.K. Simmons, who played Daily Bugle head honcho J. Jonah Jameson, kicked MTV News a puzzle piece when he outlined his character’s planned arc for the flick. “J. Jonah Jameson was going to be somehow exiled or disgraced or demoted and end up in some little cubicle somewhere and be railing, even more than usual, against the world,” Simmons told us at the Sundance Film Festival . The actor was in town to promote “The Music Never Stops,” a moving drama about a man whose brain tumor renders him unable to differentiate past from present. But our talk inevitably turned to the “Spider-Man” that will never be, and Simmons admitted he was sad to see his version of the franchise die off — not least because it meant he wouldn’t get to cash that hefty check. “I’m still reeling from the rug being pulled out of us,” he said. “I had just bought a house I can’t afford!” Shortly before Sony pulled the plug, Simmons had been eying work on another three “Spider-Man” films and was having creative meetings with Raimi. “There wasn’t a script-script yet, but I had seen Sam a few weeks before that and we talked about story ideas, because on those movies, we always started on the script and we expanded on it,” he explained. “There was a lot of either us coming up with stuff in the room or doing it literally on set — a lot of improv-y stuff with the whole cast in those office scenes.” Simmons added: “He was saying, ‘This is the basic outline, now go bring me funny stuff.’ ” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Amy Adams Flashes The Muppets Her Undies

I haven’t seen a Muppets movie in decades, I thought they were still lost in space, but I know for sure that they weren’t very sexy films. Until now that is. Here’s Amy Adams flashing her underwear while filming scenes for the latest installment in the franchise. First Katy Perry’s fat boobs sex up Sesame Street and now this. I guess if you’re going to throw away what little career you’ve got with a Muppets movie, might as well flash your ass for the kids. Can Muppets get boners?

The A-Team’s Sharlto Copley on Budgets, Apartheid and Going Off Script

While this summer’s big-budget adaptation of the ’80s TV hit The A-Team (out this week from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment) may not have been the franchise tentpole its studio hoped to get for the money it spent, the action extravaganza did confirm the star quality of Sharlto Copley , who first turned up on our pop culture radars after his starring role in the 2009 Best Picture nominee District 9 .

Hollywood’s 5 Most Well-Done Responses to 9/11

Hollywood was in a precarious position in the months and years following Sept. 11, 2001: Completely ignore the event and a filmmaker might seem callous or, at the very least, out of touch. Center an entire film around the tragedy and that same filmmaker could be accused of being exploitative. The industry obviously had to respond, but it had to be done right. There’s quite a difference between good filmmaking and a 9/11 reference only for the sake of tugging at already existing emotional strings (I’m talking to you, Remember Me ). It’s cheap. Though, some were done very well. We assembled a few examples of films over the last nine years which went about addressing those events of 2001 in a unique, thoughtful or poignant way.

REVIEW: With Resident Evil: Afterlife, There’s Not Much Thrilla Left in Milla

Sorry to disappoint the fanboys, but this is the first film in the Resident Evil series in which Milla Jovovich neither begins nor ends the movie stark naked. That said, her skintight ass-kicking ninja outfit doesn’t exactly leave much to the imagination, and her most sensual features — her feline eyes and liquid mouth — are as available and expressive as ever. For the fourth consecutive film in the franchise, she’s a whirling, swirling, zombie-killing baby doll, and remains the only reason to visit Paul W.S. Anderson’s dopily grim dystopia. It’s a fact that Anderson tacitly acknowledges in the film’s opening scene, populating the screen with dozens of careening Jovovich clones.

Jeremy Renner Signed For ‘Mission: Impossible IV’

Paramount announced addition of ‘Hurt Locker’ actor to star alongside Tom Cruise in next ‘M:I’ installment. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Kevin Winter/ WireImage From “The Hurt Locker” to Hawkeye in “The Avengers” to a role opposite superspy Ethan Hunt, Jeremy Renner’s career is on the rise, as Paramount announced today that the seasoned yet rising star will appear as an operative alongside Tom Cruise in “Mission: Impossible IV.” According to Deadline , Paramount production chief Adam Goodman feels Renner “has a Daniel Craig quality” that he wants for the role. Sources tell the site that the studio was also looking for an actor who might be able to continue on with the franchise, should Cruise choose not to return in the future (Cruise is expected to return for a fifth installment). Other actors considered for the role include Tom Hardy (“Inception”), Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Kevin Zegers, Christopher Egan and Renner’s “Hurt Locker” co-star Anthony Mackie. Although the production has had a few bumps and uncertainties along the way, Cruise has been vocal about his commitment to bring in new talent to the franchise. “My whole thing with the series is always having a new director come on and put their stamp on ‘Mission: Impossible,’ ” he told MTV News recently. “Brian De Palma was first, then John Woo, J.J. Abrams and now Brad Bird, so it will be Brad Bird’s ‘Mission: Impossible.’ ” Regarding his thoughts on the story line — which is, of course, heavily under wraps — Cruise said simply: “It’s sick. It’s fun, really fun.” Ever since his star-making turn in last year’s award-season darling (and Best Picture winner) “The Hurt Locker,” Renner has been lining up a slate of prestigious and high-profile projects. He’ll next appear in Ben Affleck’s much buzzed about Boston drama “The Town,” followed by a stint as superhero Hawkeye in Joss Whedon’s “Avengers,” and then his role in “Mission: Impossible IV.” The production, directed by Bird, with Cruise and J.J. Abrams producing, is set to begin shooting this fall. Meet the Fockers Trailer: Even More Projectile Spurting Than The Exorcist

There is a moment while watching the international trailer for Meet the Fockers (Spanish-subtitled, because why not) where you may think, “This looks tolerable. Hey, Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller aren’t at odds anymore. That’s good, maybe they’re doing something different with this franchise.” Then Stiller’s son projectile-vomits in his face, and Stiller himself squirts blood on his entire family.

‘Mission: Impossible IV’ Still Moving Forward With Tom Cruise

Paramount is ‘excited’ about star, despite the underwhelming performance of ‘Knight and Day.’ By Eric Ditzian Tom Cruise Photo: George Pimentel/WireImage Paramount and Tom Cruise chose to accept another “Mission: Impossible” in February , and despite a slew of questions surrounding the project, both the studio and its leading man remain committed to one another. “We absolutely are excited about having Tom Cruise star in this movie,” Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore told The Hollywood Reporter. Yet the fact that Paramount even had to go on record in support of Cruise highlights the issues surrounding “Mission: Impossible IV” four years after the last installment in the franchise. Last month, Cruise’s action comedy, “Knight and Day,” opened to an underwhelming $20.1 million box office haul, and Paramount is reportedly keeping a watchful eye on the overseas numbers to see if the actor can sustain his appeal to foreign audiences. “It all depends on whether Tom Cruise brings in foreign bucks,” an executive not involved with the film told THR. For the moment, preproduction on “M:I 4” continues. Brad Bird (“The Incredibles”) is reportedly onboard to direct, with J.J. Abrams producing, and Paramount is said to be expecting a final script within weeks. Shooting would reportedly begin by the end of the year with a theatrical release planned during 2011’s holiday season. The studio is targeting a budget of around $140 million, significantly less than the $165 million budget of “M:I 3,” and Cruise is not expected to receive a $20 million payday, as he had not long ago. “Everybody will do their best to make it work,” said a Cruise rep about the star’s “M:I 4″ payday. And then there’s the ongoing talk about just what Cruise’s role in the movie will be. There is a long-standing rumor that his Ethan Hunt character might not even be the face of the franchise for the new film, but that he’d hand off the reigns to a younger actor or even an ensemble. ” ‘Mission: Impossible’ is a brand,” an unnamed former studio chief said. “It didn’t have anything to do with Tom Cruise in the beginning.” Do you think Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt should be the main character in “M:I 4”?
