Todrick Hall Was Planning To Dance On ‘American Idol’ Next Week

‘I was going to be the first contestant to actually do a dance break,’ he says. By Katie Byrne Todrick Hall performs on “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Todrick Hall stumbled a bit during his first “American Idol” live performances, but he seemed to hit his stride with a bombastic version of Queen’s “Somebody to Love” this week. Unfortunately, the “Idol” viewers repaid him by sending him on his way Thursday night, along with Lilly Scott , Alex Lambert and Katelyn Epperly . We caught up with Hall on Friday (March 12) to talk about why he was eliminated, how he got sucked into the rumor mill and what’s next. Q : Were you surprised to be eliminated after your best live performance? A : I feel like I should have done that a couple weeks earlier. The problem is, I’m an African-American male, as you call tell from watching me on TV. [ Laughs. ] … I got so many messages saying, “Sing Usher. Sing Chris Brown. Sing Brian McKnight. Sing Ne-Yo, Stevie Wonder, any black artist basically that you can sing, because that’s your demographic.” But that’s not the kind of music that I want to sing, so I’m happy that I stayed true to myself, but I kinda feel if I had just sang the cookie-cutter songs that people would have expected me to do and not gone so far out there with the clothes and the performing and would have just been a normal guy that got up there and sang semi-decent, I feel like I would have done better. But I’m happy that I stayed true to myself, because I think that is the most important. I would not have been happy doing anything else. Q : Do you think your theater background worked against you on the show? A : I do honestly feel that way, and it’s said to say, but when people know certain things about you, it’s kinda hard to shake those things. But I just told someone today that I feel if Lady Gaga, who is one of the most successful artists out right now, if she was on “American Idol,” I don’t think that they would have good things to say about her. … I do think that they want you to be out of the box and they kept telling me that I was changing things too much, but I would hear them tell people they’re not changing enough and not making it their own. You have to try and find that line of when is it not changing it too much and when is it being too cookie-cutter and being a karaoke version, which sometimes they’re OK with and sometimes they’re not. I feel like I was true to myself, and I feel I’ll be rewarded for being different in the end. Q : What did you do after your elimination? A : I just took a deep breath and thought, “What do I do next? Pick yourself up.” I’ve grown up in theater, and I always know there are no’s. … I was more concerned about Alex and some of the people who had not necessarily gone through this. Q : There have been a lot of online reports about you being involved in a scam surrounding “Oz, the Musical.” Can you explain that? A : I’m so glad that I can talk about it now. It wasn’t a good time to talk about it when I was on “American Idol,” because I just needed to focus on the show, but I do want everybody to know, I’m not a scam artist. I am a nice person. No 23-year-old that I know in the history of the world has ever had to put on a show, and I think if they think about that, they’ll realize I’m just an ambitious kid that got wrapped up with a producer that didn’t really know what he was doing. I didn’t really know what I was doing. I allowed my name to be attached to it, but I’m gonna get on the phone on Monday and hopefully call a lot of those people, because I do want to go there, and I love kids, and I wouldn’t want people to think negatively of me in that way, and I think the show is going to happen again and that we’ll be able to fix that situation. And there won’t be no more negative press. Just for the record, I was just the writer and director/choreographer. I did not produce that show. I never had any of that money. I never dealt with any of the money side of the show. Q : Did you know what you would sing for the Rolling Stones theme week? A : I was gonna sing “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction.” I was gonna dance for the very first time. They kept yelling at me for dancing, then Ellen, the very last week, said, “I think you should dance,” so I was going to be the first contestant to actually do a dance break, like Crystal Bowersox does her harmonica type of thing and the guitar and people have beatboxed. But no one ever danced, and I was looking forward to doing that. Were you sad to see Todrick go? Will you listen to his post-“Idol” music? Let us know! Matt Giraud Working On ‘Soulful Rock’ Debut

‘American Idol’ vet duetted with Scott MacIntyre on Thursday night. By Gil Kaufman Matt Giraud performs on “American Idol” Thursday Photo: F Micelotta/American Idol 2010/Getty Images It’s been a while since America has seen Matt Giraud. The JT-like soul man who was a wild card “American Idol” finalist and recipient of last season’s controversial judge’s save has been working hard off-the-radar since his fifth-place finish on season eight. Since his “Idol” run ended, Giraud’s been writing songs in Nashville for his debut album, working with such well-known songwriters as Marcus Hummon (Rascal Flatts, Dixie Chicks) and Monty Powell (Keith Urban). “I’m not really going country,” he told MTV News last month, “but they appreciate soul down there and I’ve been playing with them and making great music.” So far, he’s recorded 15 songs, many of which he co-wrote, and is hoping to amass at least 30 before he starts shopping an album around. First he plans to release an EP sometime later this year to capitalize on the buzz he’s gotten since notching a #1 hit on the iTunes jazz chart with Nashville singer Anna Wilson on “You Don’t Know Me.” He also made his triumphant return to the “Idol” stage during Thursday night’s elimination show, teaming up with fellow finalist Scott MacIntyre on a spirited dueling piano cover of Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It.” “I’m just learning the craft of songwriting,” Giraud said of the writers he’s been working with in Nashville and Los Angeles, including Leah Haywood, who wrote “Pieces” for Allison Iraheta’s debut album. He was also planning on hooking up with singer/songwriter Graham Colton, whose “Best Days” has been featured on “Idol,” and which Giraud sang when he made it to Hollywood during season eight. “For them, it’s their job. One day they’re working with John Legend and Carrie Underwood and the next they’re with me. They know I don’t have a big record deal, but they want to work with me because they see something in me.” For now, the singer who made his bones with his smooth blue-eyed soul style, said he’s putting together an arsenal of songs that will hopefully surprise his fans, including some of his signature soul, plus some bluesier numbers, a few Maroon 5-style pop tunes and a handful of tracks that mine the Legend vein of buttery R&B. “Every time I work with a new writer something different comes out,” he said, describing the overarching sound as “soulful rock.” He hasn’t signed a label deal yet, but there’s been some interest and for now he said he’s just taking his time and playing live shows in between studio sessions. We Follow ‘Hope For Haiti Now’ Donations With World Food Programme

MTV News crew met with WFP’s Louis Hamann to see how food donations are being distributed in Haiti. By Gil Kaufman A victim of the earthquake in Haiti prepares food Photo: MTV News Haiti faces untold challenges as the Caribbean island nation tries to dig out and recover from the devastating 7.0 earthquake that leveled thousands of buildings and killed more than 200,000 in January. In addition to medical attention and shelter in advance of the rainy season, one of the most crucial needs continues to be food aid to the millions of Haitians left homeless in the wake of the disaster. MTV News returned to the island in late February to follow the trail of some of the more than $65 million raised during January’s “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon . We dropped in on staffers from the 50-year-old United Nations World Food Programme, which delivers life-saving food to victims of war, civil conflict and natural disasters across the globe. Even before the quake, conditions were desperate in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, with poverty and hunger already rampant. But the destruction of so many homes, businesses and government buildings made conditions even more dire for the chronically hungry and impoverished. MTV’s Sway traveled to Haiti to document the work of the WFP, applying stickers to a few 110-pound bags of urgently needed rice to follow their path to hungry Haitians. Surrounded by bags of food in the port of the nation’s devastated capital, Port-au-Prince, WFP’s Louis Hamann said the organization has brought in about 25,000 metric tons of food (around 55 million pounds) to date. “It just gives you an idea of how massive this operation is for us here in Haiti,” he said, noting that the $58 million grant from “Hope for Haiti Now” has helped the organization buy, ship and distribute the food aid to those most in need, possibly for the next year. Rice is an obvious first-choice staple to distribute because it is easy to store, cook and share and a little goes a long way. “The reason that it’s only rice right now is to make sure that we reach everybody quickly and efficiently [and] calm down the food situation in Port-au-Prince,” said Hamann, who added that the plan is to move to a “more traditional basket” of food items featuring staples of the Haitian diet in the next weeks and months. Sway also visited a massive staging area where trucks were loaded up with bags of rice that were delivered early in the morning to the sea of refugees set up in a temporary tent city inside the Sylvio Cator Soccer Stadium near the island’s capital. As the thousands inside the stadium lined up for food aid early in the morning, they were quickly joined by thousands more looking for rice, an example of the more than 3,000 families that line up every day in just one location to haul away the heavy bags. MTV’s crew then followed one of those families as they carried a bag back to their crumpled home, a pile of rubble and twisted metal, where the rice would be cooked over a makeshift carbon stove by widowed mother Myrthile Joseph. “Thank you to everyone that donated for Haiti from all over the world,” said a grateful Joseph. “Thank you for the distribution that is going to the people in need.” Related Videos Making Progress In Haiti

‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds: Improvement, Rage And Cocky Bananas

From Michael Lynche’s ‘This Woman’s Work’ to Alex Lambert’s tear-heavy exit, it’s all in the latest ‘Idol in 60 Seconds.’ By Jim Cantiello Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott, Alex Lambert and Katie Stevens on Thursday’s “American Idol” Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images ” ‘American Idol’ in 60 Seconds” has fast become an MTV News institution, but it goes by so fast that it’s not always easy to catch every golden nugget. So, here we present to you a slightly altered script of the weekly bite-size recap of “Idol” high jinks, plus a joke or two that had to be cut for time! This week was the “American Idol” contestants’ last chance to make the Top 12, so you know what that means: A lot of desperation and a lot of tears … and that was just the judges! Yes, it was a weird week of bad singing, really bad song choices and unbelievably bad split screens. But it’s season nine, so what else is new? Actually, a few things! Lacey Brown and Didi Benami finally sang well, Lee Dewyze sort of smiled and Tim Urban’s take on Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” didn’t completely, utterly suck. [ Ellen runs up to him and yells: “That was fantastic!” ] But let’s not throw the boy a parade — especially when we also had Siobhan Magnus doing the Animals a cappella for her dad and Big Mike Lynche doing Kate Bush’s “This Woman’s Work” for hostile wombs everywhere. [ Kara talks about being moved because she doesn’t have a baby! ] You know what was also sort of gross? [ Ellen: “Cocky banana.” Simon: “Picture Randy in a bikini.” Andrew: “Gotta rub me the right way!” ] Thank heaven for Crystal Bowersox, whose amazing “Give Me One Reason” gave everyone a new reason to love her. On Thursday night’s results show, producers continued to remind us how much better season eight was — especially following the departures of Lilly Scott and Alex Lambert . Seriously, America? Most of my favorites eliminated? I hope you choke on a cocky banana! Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Jermaine Sellers Says He Appeared ‘Diva-Ish’ On ‘American Idol’

‘Sometimes, the camera can make you look more arrogant,’ castoff says of his comments to the judges. By Katie Byrne Jermaine Sellers Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Jermaine Sellers got some pretty harsh feedback from the “American Idol” judges for his semifinal performances, but said he was convinced that his faith would carry him through the negativity. His dream came to an end, however, on Thursday, when he was voted out of the competition , along with John Park, Haeley Vaughn and Michelle Delamor. “In God, there’s no failure,” the 27-year-old said after his elimination. So what’s next for the Joliet, Illinois, church boy? We caught up with him Friday (March 5) to discuss that and much more. Q : You were very outspoken about your faith on the show. Do you think your post-singing comments had anything to do with your elimination? A : Though I hate to say it, yeah, I do. Because sometimes, the camera can make you look more arrogant and diva-ish. Anybody that knows me knows I’m, like, the coolest guy. I like to make people laugh. I honestly do wear a onesie to bed, the whole nine yards. I hate it that I was made out to look like something that I’m not, but it’s television. I felt like every night that I went out there, I sang from my heart. And the part that really messed me up the most was that I couldn’t focus, because I was so scared about what was going to be said this week as far as me singing so much. I just felt like, the best way to prove a person wrong is by fighting them with God, letting God fight your battles. That’s why I kept throwing it out there. A lot of people don’t realize that with us making it this far in the competition, we haven’t really sat down and took time to thank God for us even making it this far. And without him, we’ll fail. That’s why I kept having to throw him out there. We don’t acknowledge him enough. Q : The judges obviously liked you enough to put you in the top 24, but then they tore you apart once the semifinals started. How did you take their sudden criticism? A : I took it the best way that I possibly could. The thing about it is, as an artist, you have to stay true to yourself. And with you staying true to yourself, it’s a certain way I sang my entire life, from a child on up. I kept pulling back. I pulled back a lot, because there was a lot more that I could have done. I felt like if I pulled any more back, it would be like I’m basically whispering to them. I’m a church singer. Q : What was your favorite part about making it so far on “American Idol”? A : Making it to top 20, it’s a blessing. That’s the best experience about it, just getting on that platform and being able to, not just sing to people, but to minister to them too. People don’t realize that the reason I sang songs like Oleta Adams [“Get Here”] and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On?” — half of the reason I did “What’s Going On” was because I felt like we’re not paying attention to what’s going on as far as Haiti, as far as Chile. We’re not paying attention to it. We’re spending time focusing on other stuff when we should be focusing on what’s actually going on in the world right now. Q : If you could go back, would you change your song selections because of the judges’ comments? A : “American Idol” is for teenyboppers. There’s a lot of young people and they want to hear more current stuff. They want to hear the Keri Hilson stuff, “Knocks You Down” type stuff. And that’s not where my soul is. I’m more of “Let’s talk about reality. Let’s talk about what’s going on right now.” When I sang “Get Here,” I wasn’t just talking about one specific individual; I was talking about peace. I was talking about love, respect, joy. I want all of that to come back to us. Even though I tried to deliver it the best way that I could, I never got my point across because I let fear conquer me. ‘American Idol’ Experts Predict: Who’s Headed Home Tonight?

Jermaine Sellers, Haeley Vaughn seem likely to get bad news during the results show. By Gil Kaufman Jermaine Sellers performs on “American Idol” on Tuesday Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Four hearts will be broken on “American Idol” on Thursday night (March 4). The only question is: Which two boys and girls will be the recipients of the bad news? We asked a couple of “Idol” experts to make their predictions on who deserves to go home. “Tim Urban, he’s a cute kid, but he’s got no singing chops or stage presence,” MJ Santilli, webmaster of “Idol” fan site MJsBigBlog.com , said about the floppy-haired singer who has miraculously stayed in the competition after getting a last-minute call-up due to Chris Golightly’s disqualification . “But after Simon’s praise, he’s staying put for at least another week.” In that case, Santilli’s other choice was cranky soul man Jermaine Sellers, who seemed to annoy the judges with his attitude and a slightly unhinged cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On.” “Not only was his oversinging horrendous,” she said, “but he’s super unlikable. Dude, God is not getting you to the next round. … Plus, his hair is stupid.” On the ladies’ side, Santilli said it was time to say sayonara to bubbly teen Haeley Vaughn, whose dreams of country/pop stardom crashed and burned with Wednesday night’s painful cover of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.” “Haeley has an adorable personality and a great spirit, but it’s become very clear that she’s in over her head,” Santilli said. “I don’t want to hear any more of her caterwauling, thank you.” Also worthy of booting? Fellow teen Katie Stevens, who just can’t seem to find her musical personality onstage. “She’s a boring pageant-bot, and there are similar yet better singers amongst the remaining girls,” Santilli said. MTV’s own “Idol” obsessive Jim Cantiello disagreed somewhat about which females should be shown the door. “Given that she was my early audition-round fave, it pains me to say that Lacey Brown deserves to head home,” he said of the 24-year-old antique-refurbishing nut who took the judges’ advice but still put up a fail with an uneven cover of Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me.” “She hasn’t figured out how to showcase her strange, interesting voice the way Lilly Scott has. Plus, this season there’s no shortage of squeaky-voiced quirkettes.” Also on Cantiello’s chopping block is seemingly sweet but a bit dull Michelle Delamor. “[She] should probably pack her things too,” he said of the children’s choir director who took a shot with a smoothed-out R&B cover of Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open.” “I give her credit for going out on a limb with that Creed song, but she didn’t nail the vocals. For such a crazy song choice, you’d think it’d be memorable, but it just wasn’t.” For more opinions on who might go home tonight, head to the Newsroom blog. Who do you think will go home tonight? Lil Wayne To Be Sentenced, Begin Jail Term Today

After a postponement for dental surgery, the Cash Money MC is expected to turn himself in. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images This is it. Barring any colossally unforeseen circumstances (or eight more root canals ), Lil Wayne will be formally sentenced and finally turn himself in to begin his one-year prison sentence in New York on Tuesday (March 2). The sentencing was scheduled for last month , but Wayne’s attorney requested a delay due to dental surgery the rapper required. Judge Charles H. Solomon agreed to the last-minute request and rescheduled the proceedings for March 2. The New Orleans MC has had more time than he requested to recover from a reported eight root canals in one day. “I don’t want this to get pushed back anymore,” Judge Solomon told the rapper’s lawyer during his last appearance. “This is the last adjournment.” Wayne is set to appear before Solomon on Tuesday afternoon and plead guilty to attempted gun possession. He’s then expected to turn himself in immediately to begin his prison term. The rapper reached a deal with prosecutors in November to plead out to a lesser deal and in return he is expected to be released from prison as early as October of this year. In 2007, Lil Wayne was arrested for gun possession following his first headlining performance in Manhattan at the Beacon Theater. A gun-possession charge in New York could have landed the Cash Money superstar behind bars for up to 15 years if he was convicted. New York is among the toughest states in the country when it comes to gun-possession laws. In other states, Lil Wayne could have reasonably gotten off with a misdemeanor rap and probation. However, in New York, mostly law-enforcement officials and those affiliated with authorities are permitted to carry firearms. The Empire State’s stringent gun laws were originally enacted during former governor George Pataki’s administration. Ultimately, what Lil Wayne pleaded guilty to amounts to him being able to have access to a gun. Police did not find a weapon on the rapper when his tour bus was searched. Rather, the gun — registered to his manager — was in a bag located near the rapper, hence the attempted charge. Lil Wayne has been working feverishly in recent weeks to complete a number of videos and songs to stay relevant during his physical absence. That pace he’s gotten accustomed to, however, will come to a screeching halt , according to a New York corrections officer who spoke to MTV News. Once the rapper lands behind bars, his days will be as regimented as his recording schedule — but will be maintained by the prison warden, not Lil Wayne. “He’ll be housed with inmates who are classified in his category, and he’ll be able to be a regular inmate,” the guard said. “He’ll be able to watch television, go into the day room and congregate with people of his classification. “He’ll have no preferable treatment at all. He’ll be treated like a regular inmate,” the guard, who declined to be identified due to the classified information he discussed, added. Lil Wayne is also still facing charges in Arizona , and his trial is set to begin there March 30. Related Videos Lil Wayne’s ‘Road To Rikers’ Lil Wayne Goes To Jail

Former ‘American Idol’ Contestant Chikezie Eze Busted For Felony Theft

Singer reportedly tried to use a phony credit card or check to make purchase. By Gil Kaufman Chikezie Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Fox Just as the live “American Idol” elimination rounds are cranking up a former “Idol” finalist, season-seven 10th-place finisher Chikezie Eze, was arrested in Beverly Hills on Thursday night at a Neiman Marcus, where he was busted on felony identity-theft charges. Sergeant Renato Moreno of the Beverly Hills Police Department confirmed the arrest and told MTV News that Eze was recognized by a sales associate at the upscale retailer and detained by store security when he allegedly tried to use “fraudulent means” to pay for a purchase. Renato could not specify what those alleged fraudulent means were because of the ongoing investigation, but said the phrase was a “catch-all for anybody trying to use the personal identifying information of another person to obtain goods, services or credit.” That could mean the attempted use of a fraudulent check, someone else’s credit card, a forged check or an application for credit using false identification. Eze, 24, a Los Angeles resident, was detained by store security until the Beverly Hills police arrived shortly after 9 p.m., when he was arrested and taken to Beverly Hills jail and booked on felony identity theft charges. According to Renato, the singer, who made his mark on “Idol” with his smooth, soulful vocals and winning smile, was released on $50,000 bail shortly after 5 a.m. PT on Friday. It was not known at press time when Eze will be in court to face the charges. MTV News was unable to reach Eze for comment at press time.

Lady Gaga Poses Topless In Q Magazine

‘I consider myself quite the lady,’ Lady Gaga says in interview with magazine. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga on the cover of Q magazine Photo: Q/ Q4music.com Lady Gaga’s appearance on the cover of England’s Q magazine is causing quite a stir: In the photo, she is seen topless, covering her chest with nothing more than her gloved hands or mesh wiring, and in some shots sporting a bulge in her black pants that is presumably a strap-on. In the issue, which hit newsstands on Tuesday (February 23), Gaga talks all about arguably the most infamous rumor of the many that have followed her around: that she is a hermaphrodite . “We all know that one of the biggest talking points of the year was that I have a d—, so why not give them what they want?” she told the magazine . Although she may come off as an unconventional person, Gaga admits she actually is quite old-fashioned in many respects. “Well, I believe in certain institutions: cooking, serving dinner, taking care of my family,” she said in the magazine. “So I consider myself quite the lady.” In the interview, Gaga also shares how her strong-willed attitude and decision to not have a conventional pop star image have, at times, been an issue for her. “The last thing a young woman needs is another picture of a sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself. My image was an issue at my record label. I fought for months and cried at meetings,” she said. “I got criticized for being arrogant because if you’re sure of yourself as a woman they say you’re a bitch whereas if you’re a man and you’re strong-willed it’s normal.” Lady Gaga is on tour in England through next month. Snoop Dogg And Kid Cudi Collaborate On ‘That Tree’

‘I did some more work on it and that’s why it’s just coming out now,’ producer Diplo says of track. By Hillary Crosley Snoop Dogg Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Snoop Dogg just released his Malice N Wonderland album late last year, but that’s not stopping the West Coast MC from teaming up with Kid Cudi and hipster producer Diplo for his new single “That Tree” for his follow-up LP More Malice. The album is slated to hit shelves on March 23. The track is a trippy mix of descending drum rolls as Snoop comically rhymes “groupies on my head like a kufi” until Kid Cudi’s voice begins the melodious hook. “Everything I’m having no it ain’t necessity/ Though I’m shining, keep on grinding/ What you see ain’t all of me,” Cudi sings over organs. As enjoyable as the song is, Diplo, the cut’s producer (who has also worked with M.I.A. and Santigold), had no idea the two rappers were even recording the track. “I’ve known Snoop’s manager Ted Chung for a while and I actually met Snoop through the Swedish singer Robyn at the Grammys last year,” Diplo recalled. “We exchanged information because he’d heard of me and I kept in touch. When Ted came around asking for beats, I didn’t have any so I gave him some small loops and Ted actually just looped the loops over again.” Diplo never heard anything more about the beats until late one night during another recording session with Kid Cudi. “Cudi was like, ‘I just did a track with Snoop over your beat.’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ ” Diplo told MTV News. “I had no idea that Ted had taken the small loops and they’d rapped on it, so Ted eventually sent me back a vocal and I kind of constructed a track around that.” Unfortunately, “That Tree” did not make the track listing for Malice N Wonderland. “It didn’t make that album because of deadlines and it wasn’t in the right shape,” Diplo said. “But they liked the track and really wanted to use it, so I did some more work on it and that’s why it’s just coming out now.” Related Artists Snoop Dogg Kid Cudi
