Aretha Franklin birthday 2011

It went a little something like this: “I guess … you#39;ll say … what can make me feel this way …. Aretha, Aretha, Aretha …” And then the woman of the hour took the mic. As guests screamed and applauded, the slimmed-down Franklin sang with Edwards for the delighted crowd, and then showed off some dance moves while blowing out the candles on her two-tier, flower-covered birthday cake. The song for that part of the evening? “Respect,” of course. When it#39;s Aretha Franklin#39;s birthday, you

Aretha Franklin Says Halle Berry Is Her ‘Pick’ For Biopic

Queen of Soul tells Wendy Williams she wants Oscar winner to bring her life to the big screen. By Mawuse Ziegbe Halle Berry Photo: Theo Wargo/WireImage Aretha Franklin has been vocal about which leading lady she would like to portray her on the big screen, and it appears that the Queen of Soul got what she wanted. Last year, the legendary singer sent out a press release to The Associated Press stating she wanted Oscar-winning superstar Halle Berry to tackle the lead role in an upcoming biopic about the powerhouse songstress. During a recent phone interview on “The Wendy Williams Show,” Franklin said Berry is set to star in the project. “Halle Berry is my pick,” Franklin said to a swell of cheers from the daytime-TV audience. The soul veteran said Berry has been tapped to play an adult version of Franklin but added that the rest of the cast has not been firmed up. “There’s a young Aretha that has yet to be named.” A rep for Berry did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment at press time. Franklin — who is recovering from an undisclosed illness reported to be cancer — also said the film has been in the works for years but hinted that a flick could be in production soon now that all the necessary elements are coming together. “For the last four years, we’ve been talking about [the film], and I have had a number of offers. Unfortunately, they were not good offers,” she explained. “Now, we have something on the table. They have all of the financing on one project and the second project, and he’s in the process of writing things for me to approve on the tele-film.” In September, Franklin said that, in addition to Berry, she wanted Academy Award-winning actor Denzel Washington and Oscar nominee Terrence Howard to appear in the film. The “Respect” diva had apparently already been in touch with the stars, saying that the trio were “enthusiastic about the project and have agreed to take on these roles, subject to further negotiation.” The script will be based on her 1999 autobiography “Aretha: From These Roots.” How do you think Halle Berry would do in an Aretha Franklin biopic? ESPN Anchor Gets Pulled From Broadcast After Sexist Remarks To A Female Co-Worker

What’s a little “sweetcakes” and “a**hole” between co-workers? Apparently to the suits at ESPN its a lot… A veteran sports broadcaster was taken off air after he called a female colleague ‘sweetcakes’. Ron Franklin further insulted Jeannie Edwards when she objected to the sexist name by calling her an ‘a**hole’. The spat came during a production meeting and was not made while the pair were on air. The incident occurred in a pre-game production meeting also attended by ESPN announcers Ed Cunningham and Rod Gilmore. When the conversation turned to the subject of Gilmore’s wife Marie being elected mayor of Alameda in California, Edwards tried to join in but was cut off by Franklin, according to reports. ‘Why don’t you leave this to the boys, sweetcakes,’ Franklin is said to have told her. ‘Don’t call me sweetcakes, I don’t like being talked to like that,’ Edwards responded. Franklin replied: ‘OK then, a**hole.’ Edwards reported Franklin’s comments to ESPN management, who attempted to pull him from the Chik-fil-A Bowl broadcast, but it was too late to find a replacement. This guy clearly hasn’t learned from the gang of other douchebags, jerk-offs, and a**holes that have made sexist jokes about co-workers on or off the air. But then again homie is like 70, he probably still calls us “nigger”…SMH Source

Butter For Biodiesel

It was an 800-pound butter sculpture of Ben Franklin that led researchers to decide dairy-to-diesel was even a possibility, according to this report in the New York Times . Organizers of the Pennsylvania Farm Show that put up the Franklin butter sculpture in 2007 solicited ideas for what to do with all that yellow (rapidly going rancid) stuff once the show was over. Booted ‘American Idol’ Contestant Chris Golightly Blasted By Ex-Manager

Singer was under contract, but his ‘promises were just empty rhetoric,’ former manager says. By Eric Ditzian Chris Golightly Photo: FOX As the top 12 men of “American Idol” get ready to take the stage Wednesday (February 24) for the second night of the season nine semifinals, the controversy surrounding one singer who was briefly a part of that coveted group continues. Following Chris Golightly’s ouster from the competition last week, his former manager has spoken out about his disqualification. “Idol” producers booted Golightly because of a previous contract he’d signed, rendering him ineligible to continue in the competition. Golightly has forcefully denied the contract was still in place when he tried out for the reality show, and now his former manager, Lawrence Franklin of Dream Projects Entertainment, has released a statement and given an interview to The Los Angeles Times in which he disputes Golightly’s account and says the singer re-upped his contract with boy band Dream 5 in the spring of 2009, only months before his “Idol” tryout. “[On] May 30, 2009, I created his second contract,” Franklin’s statement read. “A two-year agreement with Dream Projects Entertainment. However, his words and promises were just empty rhetoric.” It was on that day, Franklin says, that Golightly recorded Dream 5’s first single, “One Love,” at a studio in Los Angeles. Nonetheless, Franklin says he did speak with “Idol” producer 19 Entertainment about releasing Golightly from his contract. “After we spoke with 19 Entertainment, they told [Golightly] that our release would be no good for them and that I personally would have to sign one of theirs to release him,” he told the Times. “We waited on those documents and that’s when time ran out for him, because they were never sent over. From the beginning, we wanted him released legally because two contracts couldn’t exist [simultaneously].” Golightly has repeatedly disputed that he was under contract before trying out for “Idol.” He held a press conference Tuesday outside a Hollywood club where he displayed what he said was proof that his contractual obligation had ended prior to “Idol.” During his Times interview, Franklin accused Golightly of getting into a physical altercation with one of his bandmates. “One of the group members was upset that Chris was missing rehearsals because it was slowing things down — he had missed a major show we were planning with Ray J — and when the group member questioned Chris about it, Chris pushed him up against the wall and was put on blast for that,” Franklin said. Chris Golightly Fought To Keep His ‘American Idol’ Top 24 Spot

By the time he was released from another contract, his replacement had already been notified, according to online reports. By Melinda Green Chris Golightly Photo: FOX After Fox announced that Chris Golightly had been disqualified from the “American Idol” top 24, a lot of different stories began circulating around the Web about what really went down. Well, some new reports have emerged about the messy situation. Lawrence Franklin, Golightly’s manager, said the singer was still under contract with his label. In fact, Golightly signed a new two-year contract with Dream Projects Entertainment in May 2009. “We asked them for release documents, and they were supposed to send them over last Friday,” Franklin told USA Today. “We were prepared to give our own release documents, but after waiting on the attorneys from 19 to send over their paperwork, time kind of ran out for Chris.” While there is now another side to this season’s requisite semifinal controversy, Franklin and Golightly claim “American Idol” execs are the ones going back on their word. “They did advise Chris that as long as we released him, he’d be fine,” Franklin said. “They told him that last Friday. And we were prepared then, that night, at any time, to release him.” “American Idol” does not allow contestants to compete on the show if they are currently under a recording contract. Whether Golightly could be released from his current contract, as Franklin claimed producers were working with him to do, is just another curious piece to this he said/ they said story. According to USA Today, Gary Gilbert, an attorney for Manatt, Phelps & Phillips LLP, contacted Franklin via e-mail last week, informing him the release of Golightly from his existing contract would not get him back on “American Idol.” “Although we do not have a copy of the complete contract, on the face of what we have there seems to be a current recording agreement,” Stinson wrote to Franklin on February 11.”If the contract exists, there will be no option other than to disqualify Chris.” Golightly alleged that the mix-up had been corrected after Franklin contacted 19 Entertainment and proved he had not been with Dream Records Entertainment since June 2009, but it was too late to bring him back into the competition because his replacement, Tim Urban, had already been notified. “This is not fair. I don’t know what to do,” Golightly told USA Today early Thursday morning (February 18). Since the top 24 was revealed on Wednesday night’s show, Golightly has spoken with numerous blogs and media outlets about his disqualification. Within a few hours after the show aired, Golightly told JoesPlaceBlog he had been under contract with the boy band D.R.E.A.M. 5 until June, and the debacle concerning his release document is what led to his “Idol” exit. Golightly, an orphan who sold his car and broke his apartment lease after discovering he made this year’s top 24, was already an early fan favorite — both for his heartfelt vocals and heart-wrenching backstory.
