Kathryn Bigelow And Mark Boal Defend ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ At NY Film Critics Circle

Even as the U.S. Senate continues to inquire about what it says are misrepresentations of the use of torture in the successful hunt for Al Qaeda mastermind Osama Bin Laden in 2011, filmmakers Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal defended their Oscar hopeful Zero Dark Thirty at the New York Film Critics Circle Monday night. “I thankfully want to say that I’m standing in a room of people who understand that depiction is not endorsement, and if it was, no artist could ever portray inhumane practices,” Bigelow is quoted as saying in Huff Post, while accepting the organization’s Best Director award. “No author could ever write about them, and no filmmaker could ever delve into the knotty subjects of our time.” Senator John McCain of Arizona and Diane Feinstein of California have criticized the pic as showing water-boarding and extreme isolation among other tactics as being instrumental in the U.S. government’s decade-long search for Bin Laden. “We believe the film is grossly inaccurate and misleading in its suggestion that torture resulted in information that led to the location of [Osama] bin Laden,” Feinstein, McCain and Michigan Senator Carl Levin wrote to Zero Dark Thirty ‘s studio, Sony in December. Writer/producer Mark Boal said he was proud of the film Monday night and is unmoved by criticism which has also come from Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney. I stand here tonight being extremely proud of the film we made,” he said Monday, while accepting the prize for Best Picture with Bigelow and producer Megan Ellison. “In case anyone is asking, we stand by the film. I think at the end of the day, we made a film that allows us to look back at the past in a way that gives us a more clear-sighted appraisal of the future.” He added jokingly, “Apparently, the French government will be investigating Les Mis .” Jessica Chastain, who plays the CIA operative who tracks down Bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan, which lead to the Navy Seals raid on the compound that resoled in the Al Qaeda head’s death, told David Letterman in a recent appearance that she believes in the film’s accuracy, though acknowledged they had to shorten a decade-long hunt into a feature-length movie “Mark Boal is the investigative journalist so he’s the one who got all the information and I just went and did my job and did my research,” said Jessica Chastain to Letterman who joked that she’s not going to be arrested. “I’m afraid to get called in front of a Senate committee…” laughed Chastain. “In my opinion, this is a very accurate film… I think it’s important to note the film is not a documentary. So of course, there has been some things…We took 10 years and put it in two-and-a-half hours…” [ Sources: Huffington Post , THR ]

Kate Upton Does Elle

I know it seems like Kate Upton is everywhere these days, but can you blame me for hoping to see more of her in this photoshoot for Elle France ? Especially after that busty one from the other day , I figured Kate would be wearing nothing but her panda hat for most of these shots. Clearly, the French just don’t understand the American way of life. No self-respecting supermodel washes her car fully-clothed . Everyone knows she’s supposed to be in a bikini, and hosing herself down, not the car. I guess some things just get lost in translation. » view all 19 photos Related Articles: Kate Upton Sexes Up The Twitter Kate Upton Topless For Esquire Kate Upton’s Sexy Little Booty In PJs Kate Upton Looking Incredible In Her Bikinis

Chris Brown: Cheating on Rihanna With Sommer Gargan?

Rihanna and Chris Brown looked happier than ever celebrating Christmas Day together at the Lakers game, then New Year’s Day snuggled up in bed. As usual, however, drama is never far from the controversial couple. Just before Christmas, he jetted off to Paris with ex Karrueche Tran, and allegedly banged French reality star Ayem Nour with Karrueche’s permission. Now, he’s also been linked to Sommer Gargan. Whoever that is. “He slept with her two different times at his recording studio,” an insider tells celebrity gossip magazine In Touch of Gargan, a blonde executive assistant. This wasn’t a one-off foreign booty call like Nour, either. After meeting through mutual friends, “They’ve been texting ever since … even when he’s with Rihanna.” Day. Um. After a long period of speculation, Rihanna and Chris Brown resumed their friendship-turned love affair in earnest this fall after he broke up with Karrueche. They’re clearly exchanging bodily fluids again … the question is whether it’s monogamous. Particularly on Chris’ side. Guy seems to be available whenever. If In Touch ‘s story is true … talk about a cruel Sommer . Sorry. Fittingly, Rihanna and Chris released a HOT duet together called “Nobody’s Business” this fall, reportedly all about their tumultuous relationship. We’re guessing that would be their response to this story.

David Cronenberg Talks ‘Cosmopolis,’ High Frame Rates, And ‘Bullshit’ Oscars

2012 brought us two whacked-out limousine-set films from auteurs bearing all the markings of future cult classics. But while Leos Carax’s Holy Motors received universal critical praise, David Cronenberg ‘s Robert Pattinson -starring Cosmopolis left critics a little more divided , although how anyone could dislike a film featuring an R-Pattz prostate exam is one of life’s great mysteries. Movieline spoke with Cronenberg, a man who at this point seems physically incapable of tolerating bullshit, about his career, Oscar hopes and realities, and new advances like the High Frame Rate Peter Jackson used on The Hobbit . Along the way he riffed hypothetical on what he’d do for awards season glory, assessed the comfortable niche he’s carved out for himself on the fringes of the studio system, and revealed what he really thinks about… cats. Happy New Year! The Blu-ray release of Cosmopolis is coming out in the heart of Oscar-campaign season. I get the sense it doesn’t bug you too much that this film isn’t being discussed more as a contender. Yes. Every year I try to be as disconnected as possible. This year it’s been very easy because we haven’t been nominated for any awards. It’s not sour grapes, it’s not compensation; it’s a relief. It’s very easy to get caught up in it if you are nominated. The people who are releasing the movie get excited, they want you to do more, and you understand it because the awards can maybe get more people to see the film. This, on its face, is a good thing. However, it is all bullshit, it is all annoying and it is all very problematical. But it gives people stuff to write about, gives structure, we understand. But I won’t be watching any of the awards shows. It’s not just showing up that night, there’s months of campaigning. Oh, yes. I’ve talked with several people, one of whom was Denys Arcand, a French Canadian director who won the Best Foreign Language Oscar for The Barbarian Invasions — I know him well. He said he would never, ever do it again. He said it was a year, an incredibly intense year, and ultimately rather boring. Because he’s not doing anything creative at all, just selling. For a guy like Denys Arcand, though, does an award affect his bottom line? Does it affect his career? Will he be able to buy a new house after winning? No, not really. On the contrary, it’s caused him to retreat. He’s decided he doesn’t want to be involved in anything remotely Hollywood. He wants to make Quebecois films. He attempted to make some movies in English with emerging stars and it was a disaster — it’s not his sensibility. For an actor, though, perhaps it’s a different story. Viggo Mortensen was nominated for some of your films, Keira Knightley was discussed for A Dangerous Method . But let’s say she had won — would that have elevated her, and gotten her roles she wouldn’t have gotten otherwise? I don’t think so. She’s incredibly sought after — despite the fact that the British critics are often on her, but they like to eat their own, let’s face it. She’s too smart and beautiful and too talented, it drives them crazy. I don’t see [an award] doing anything for her. End of the year lists, though — Cosmopolis did end up placing second in Cahiers du Cinema ‘s top ten of the year. Yes and on Sight and Sound ‘s list, as well. So the snooty-pants Euros are digging the movie. And, it’ll no doubt end up somewhere on my top 20, I think. [Note: it came in at #12.] If I gave you money would you put it higher? No. Well? Depends how much money. C’mon, let’s talk. A hundred grand goes a long way. Would you give me a hundred grand to write that Cosmopolis is the best movie of the year? No! [Laughs.] But it’s a thought. Let’s be honest — at this stage in your career, let’s say you met the most reputable critic in the world, you met him at a bar and he said, “Oh, man, I’m in a real money crunch right now, I will make Cosmopolis my #1 of the year for X amount of dollars,” do you consider it for a second? No. But that’s because I’m too cheap. But… fact is, I have been on those lists, New York Times has been very positive on my last few movies, we got three great reviews from three critics at the New York Times for A Dangerous Method . But we still didn’t get…[laughs]…it didn’t… Still nobody in the States sees your damn movies, it’s Europeans only! That’s right. It doesn’t do much. But, listen, you like the validation, especially when they are intelligent people who write beautifully and when they applaud your movie it is terrific and gratifying. Pragmatically, it doesn’t do much. Better to get good reviews over bad, obviously, but we all know terrible movies that got terrible reviews that made a lot of money. There’s no one to one relationship. You just have to get very ’60s… just go with the flow.

High and Low: ‘Qatsi’ Trilogy Is Hypnotic While Michael Caine Is Amusingly Idiotic In ‘The Island’

Get out your passports, kids, because we’re seeing the world. Director Godfrey Reggio’s epic Qatsi Trilogy, filmed around the world, will kick your home theater to the next level with its stunning visuals and complex soundtracks. Then it’s off to the Caribbean, where Michael Caine embarrassed himself in a Peter Benchley adaptation several years before starring in that really terrible Jaws sequel. Some people never learn. HIGH: The Qatsi Trilogy (The Criterion Collection; DVD or Blu-Ray, $79.95) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Three films from screen artist and environmental activist Godfrey Reggio: The legendary Koyaanisqatsi (1983), and its equally impressive follow-ups Powaqqatsi (1988) and Naqoyqatsi (2002). (All three titles are words from the Hopi language; respectively, they mean “life out of balance,” “life in transformation,” and “life as war,” so basically this set is “The Life Trilogy.”) WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: All three of these films defy easy synopsis, but here goes: Reggio uses compelling imagery and the music of Philip Glass to portray the stark contrast between the natural order and man’s inflicting of industry upon the planet (and upon his fellow men). A slow pan across a desert plain or along the face of a cliff might be contrasted with sped-up footage of cars driving through cities or hot dogs and Twinkies being processed in factories. One of the signature moments of Powaqqatsi shows a small child walking along the road, only to be engulfed in the sand cloud kicked up by a passing 18-wheeler. There’s no narration or dialogue, so what you take from these film is purely up to you. WHY IT’S SCHMANCY: This sort of non-verbal, non-narrative film generally gets relegated to museums and art installations, so for Reggio to have gotten mainstream theatrical (and DVD) distribution is something of a miracle. But even if you shy away from anything that even smacks of experimental, these movies are hypnotic and thought-provoking. (They may also play well in Washington and Colorado, if you get my drift.) WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT (AGAIN): Just the fact that these films are being made available in Blu-Ray for the first time would be reason enough to plunk down for this set, but it’s a Criterion Collection release, which means it comes loaded with oodles of great extras. There are new and vintage interviews, TV spots, Reggio’s short film Anima Mundi , a demo version of Koyaanisqatsi with a scratch soundtrack featuring Allen Ginsberg , a chat with musicians Glass and Yo-Yo Ma, and a booklet featuring essays by film scholar Scott MacDonald, music critic John Rockwell and environmentalist Bill McKibben of 350.org. LOW: The Island (Scream Factory; $26.99 DVD+Blu-Ray Combo) WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: Written by Peter Benchley, based on his novel; directed by Michael Ritchie; starring Michael Caine and David Warner. WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT: Caine stars as a journalist investigating the disappearance of ships in the Bermuda Triangle. Traveling to the Caribbean with his estranged son (Jeffrey Frank), Caine discovers a hidden colony of pirates, descended from French marauders of centuries ago, raiding pleasure boats to stay alive. Caine gets raped by one of the lady pirates (they’re excited to get some non-inbred DNA into the pool) while Caine’s son is won over by the scalawags (led by Warner). Can our hero escape — and will he be able to convince his son to go with him? WHY IT’S FUN: Something of a legendary dud upon its original release (particularly since this marked a reunion of Benchley with Jaws producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown), The Island has become a cult fave in the ensuing decades among Benchley fans and bad-movie lovers alike. I think the film’s strengths lie with director Ritchie, one of the more underrated American auteurs of the 1970s and ’80s. (His films include Fletch , Smile , The Candidate and The Bad News Bears .) While this isn’t anywhere near his best work, Ritchie does what he can with the often risible source material — don’t ask too many questions about how this cabal of hidden pirates has survived for three centuries — and keeps things moving at a brisk clip. WHY YOU SHOULD BUY IT (AGAIN): Previously available only via Universal’s movies-on-demand label, this marks the first Blu-Ray release of the film. There’s not a single extra to be found, alas, and you you just know Caine would have some hilarious things to say about the experience if Scream Factory could have convinced him to do a commentary.
