Katy Perry Says Mixing Sex And Religion Makes ‘Bad Things Happen’

‘I am sensitive to … Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth,’ singer tells Rolling Stone. By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: Mike Marsland/ WireImage Despite her recent skin-baring spreads for magazines like Esquire and even her own Teenage Dream album cover , Katy Perry says she’s still modest about some things. In the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone, the California Gurl takes a bold stance against what she describes as inappropriate use of religious imagery and reveals why her debut single, “I Kissed a Girl,” was not a contradiction of her religious upbringing. “I am sensitive to Russell taking the Lord’s name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth,” she says in the August 19 issue. “I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen.” This isn’t the first time that Perry has taken a stab at Lady Gaga. After the premiere in June of Gaga’s “Alejandro” video, which features the singer seemingly swallowing a rosary whole, Perry tweeted, “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke.” Perry later backtracked somewhat from the tweet , saying her anger wasn’t directed solely at Gaga. “What’s funny is that everybody was assuming I was directing it completely towards her, and if I was directing something I would write their ‘@,’ ” she told a French radio station. “Lately, I’ve just been seeing some things that are kind of like, I don’t know, in my own personal feelings, a little bit like not something I would do, I guess.” For those who are raising an eyebrow at Perry, a pop star who has participated in her share of provocative photo shoots and videos — her “California Gurls” wardrobe includes a whipped-cream cone bra — she fired back a few words in response, telling Rolling Stone, “Yes, I said I kissed a girl. But I didn’t say I kissed a girl while f—ing a crucifix.” What do you think about Katy’s stance on sex and spirituality in pop music? Sound off in the comments! Book Review: 100 Words – Two Hundred Visionaries Share Their Hope For the Future By William Murtha

There’s a French proverb out there that goes: “Hope is the dream of a soul awake.” With an endless ebb and flow of media, information and literature out there that overwhelmingly focuses on the negative, the catastrophic and the heartbreaking, is it no wonder that some of us suffer from a vague feeling of burnout? During such trying times, the best antidote is to look to the positive side of things, which is why we find 100 Words, Two Hundred Visionaries a treasure trove of inspiration, full of farsighted gems gathered from two hundred thinkers and changemakers living today. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

REVIEW: Farewell, the Week’s Other Spy Film, Explores Human Toll of Espionage

Farewell, a cold war drama by the French director Christian Carion, isn’t just a movie set in 1981; in many ways it feels like a movie made in 1981. Unflashy and unpretentious, laid out before us in a modest, slightly grayed-out Eastern Bloc color palette, the picture moves tentatively at first: It slumps into action, rather than springing into it. But scene by scene Carion, working from a true story, builds a spy story that focuses more on the human costs of betraying one’s country than on the political fallout. To put it another way, if one man’s leaking of a few maps and documents can precipitate the downfall of a country, just think what it could do to his family.

Katy Perry Denies Calling Miley Cyrus ‘Britney Spears All Over Again’

‘Rumor control: I never said sh– bout my girl Miley. I love that ho,’ Perry tweeted. By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Some parents and fans may have issues with Miley Cyrus’ recent image transformation but there’s one person who has no problem with it: Katy Perry. Last week, Life & Style magazine claimed that one of its “spies” at Canada’s MuchMusic Awards heard Katie Perry saying about Cyrus, “she’s Britney Spears all over again. It’s happening right before our eyes.” “No, she’s definitely headed the Britney route,” the source claimed Perry added. “It’s worse. Look at those outfits. It’s bad.” Perry took to Twitter late Friday to clear the air regarding the rumor, insisting that there’s no need for female rivalry in the pop stratosphere. “Rumor control: I never said sh– bout my girl Miley. I love that ho. Mags should stop pitting girls against each other. We all can co-exist!” she tweeted. Whether it’s debunking rumors or getting something off her chest, Perry has long used her Twitter to her advantage. In early June, outlets were quick to jump on a comment Perry made which seemed to be a direct stab at Lady Gaga’s video for “Alejandro.” “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke,” Perry tweeted. Perry later explained that the tweet wasn’t solely directed at Gaga. “Lately, I’ve just been seeing some things that are kind of like, I don’t know, in my own personal feelings, a little bit like not something I would do, I guess.” she told a French radio station.

CNN Drops Editor That Made Pro-Hezbollah Comments on Twitter

On Monday, NewsBusters wondered how CNN would handle one of its senior editors expressing regrets for the death of the Hezbollah cleric that possibly orchestrated the 1983 bombing of two Marines barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. Two days later, the self-professed “most trusted name in news” dropped Octavia Nasr for tweeting, “Sad to hear of the passing of Sayyed Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah.. One of Hezbollah’s giants I respect a lot..” According to the New York Times, she’s no longer with CNN: Ms. Nasr left her CNN office in Atlanta on Wednesday. Parisa Khosravi, the senior vice president for CNN International Newsgathering, said in an internal memorandum that she “had a conversation” with Ms. Nasr on Wednesday morning and that “we have decided that she will be leaving the company.”   CNN officials became aware of her tweet on Monday, and a spokesman said Tuesday that it was an “error of judgment” on her part. “CNN regrets any offense her Twitter message caused. It did not meet CNN’s editorial standards. This is a serious matter and will be dealt with accordingly,” the spokesman said. Ms. Nasr apparently deleted the tweet at some point. In a follow-up blog post on Tuesday evening, Ms. Nasr said she was sorry about the tweet “because it conveyed that I supported Fadlallah’s life’s work. That’s not the case at all.” Her explanation was apparently not sufficient for her CNN bosses. Ms. Khosravi wrote in the memo, “at this point, we believe that her credibility in her position as senior editor for Middle Eastern affairs has been compromised going forward.” Indeed. Consider that the following was reported by the Times Sunday:  Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah, the top Shiite cleric in Lebanon, whose writings and preachings inspired the Dawa Party of Iraq and a generation of militants, including the founders of Hezbollah, died Sunday morning in Beirut. He was 75. He spent his entire career arguing that after centuries of passivity, Shiite Muslims should become involved in politics and organize militias. He famously justified suicide bombings and other tactics of asymmetrical warfare by arguing that if Israel and its allies used advanced weaponry, Islam permitted the use of any weapons in retaliation. In a 2002 interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph, he was quoted as saying of the Palestinians: “They have had their land stolen, their families killed, their homes destroyed, and the Israelis are using weapons, such as the F16 aircraft, which are meant only for major wars. There is no other way for the Palestinians to push back those mountains, apart from martyrdom operations.” Western intelligence services, however, held the ayatollah responsible for attacks against Western targets, including the 1983 bombings of two barracks in Beirut in which 241 United States Marines and 58 French paratroopers were killed. As such, Nasr’s tweet practically went viral throughout the conservative blogosphere Monday with websites like The Weekly Standard and Weasel Zippers breaking the news to their readers. We at NewsBusters also felt Nasr’s words were newsworthy . Did all this pressure figure in CNN’s decision? Who knows? But one thing’s for certain: if they didn’t know it already, media members should be very careful what they post at Twitter.

Renault Unveils DeZir 100% Electric Concept Supercar

Photo: Renault Zero to 60 in About 5 Seconds Concept cars can be annoying. The bad ones are a waste of time, and the good ones don’t always go into production, which is frustrating. But they’re still useful because they show us what engineers and designers are working on, and they give us clues about the future direction of car companies. This is why Renault’s DeZir electric concept car is interesting (DeZir is close to the French “désir”, which translates to “desire”), especially when taken along with Renault’s more practical
