Virginia Sherwood/NBC/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Jocko Sims Says His “New Amsterdam” Character Is Anti-Swirl But He’s Not If you’ve been missing out on NBC’s new Tuesday night hospital drama “New Amsterdam” we’d like to suggest there’s no time like the present to catch up. Last week BOSSIP caught up with one of the stars of the show, Jocko Sims who plays heart surgeon Dr. Floyd Reynolds. Reynolds has a lot of chemistry with Dr. Lauren Bloom, played by actress Janet Montgomery, and while it’s clear the pair have a good thing going, Reynolds is reluctant to let their relationship move beyond the friends with benefits zone because he wants a black wife and a black family. BOSSIP: What did you think when you read about the swirl situation in the script? Jocko Sims: This was our goal, just to get people talking. That’s what was refreshing to me, that it sparked a conversation. When I first saw it I was a little nervous, because first of all what he said was racist. Flip it. Think about it if the roles were reversed. A white guy and Black girl and they’re having sexual relations and she asks if they can take things further and he says “Well, I can’t because you’re not white.” BOSSIP: But that happens all the time, especially if one party or the other is a certain religion. Like you will find that if you’re dating a Jewish person or another religion. JS: But is that racist? Speaking of Jewish, We showed this that a hospital and one guy was really concerned because he felt like if the tables were turned it would be wrong. My concern, I really try to look at things from multiple perspectives, whether it concerns race or not when I’m looking at characters. I was thinking he is going to offend people on both sides. Like I got hit up by Black women and they’re like “Whoo, that’s right!”, then I got hit up today at the airport like ‘What are you doing? Don’t be using us as an excuse… Da da da da da, you not really down.’ Bottom line again, we’re talking about it again in this country, we’re talking and that’s what we wanted. You’ve got your Turkish families, who are like “I want you to marry a nice Turkish… ” It’s interesting because I’ve been in that position. I’ve dated different races. I’ve had my mom’s voice in the back of my head. The only issue I had was maybe I wasn’t able to come to terms with why I didn’t wanna take “Susie” — I just made up a name — home, but I would be afraid of it. I sympathize with Reynolds because, yeah, he’s been there. HE’s going where I have been I’ve never been compelled to tell someone ‘Hey you’re good enough for — but yeah you can’t come home and meet Mom.’ That was a little bit unrealistic for me but everybody generally is loving it. Someone asked me what I would want for the future generations and all I would ask that we just be able to sit down and listen to one another and have a conversation. For folks, before they talk to listen. The dialogue is worth having. BOSSIP: So is this going to be something that we’ll continue to see because he did offer her a drink after that conversation. Does she go back to his apartment? JS: A few people have been confused by that. I think that was kind of unclear, because he asked her if she wanted a drink literally right after she almost died, so she was like ‘Right now?’ because you know ‘get a drink’ usually meant… But in this case he was literally asking her if she wanted a glass of scotch to relax, he wasn’t asking her for more sex. Will there be more? You know I can’t tell you that. Everybody on Twitter is like “You know they’re going to … ” That’s what I would expect too. Despite Nev Schulman’s accuser filing a police report , they’re keeping him on Catfish , but the show is still looking for a new cohost. Many thought that Vanderpump Rules star Kristen Doute would be a shoe-in for a host of reasons. Nev laughed it off and basically called her a stalker, and Kristen is firing back. Max Joseph is out at Catfish . Nev Schulman, despite the sexual misconduct allegations against him, is still hosting the show. And he’s looking for someone else. Naturally, a lot of people suggested Vanderpump Rules star Kristen Doute. It’s not just that Kristen has been a fan of the show. Kristen has some real detective skills, as The Ashley notes, having exposed her cheating ex-boyfriend James Kennedy and tracked down Tom Sandoval’s “Miami Girl.” Using a common celebrity tactic, Kristen even drummed up support for the idea on Twitter, and a lot of fans loved the idea. But when the subject came up in a recent interview, Nev Schulman shot down the possibility in a deeply insulting way. “I’m even afraid to say her name, honestly,” Nev told Us Weekly . He joked about her fondness for Catfish , saying: “I almost feel like I need to take a restraining order out.” “Kristen really wants to be on the show,” Nev added. “I think she’s almost … she’s trying too hard!” Kristen Doute appeared on co-star Stassi Schroeder’s Straight Up With Stassi to respond. “I do not like ‘Catfish.’ I do not watch it,” Kristen shares. “I took it off my DVR.” Kristen says: “I tweeted Nev. I’ve tweeted Max before. I’ve tweeted at ‘Catfish.’ I definitely started my own hashtag: #KristenForCatfish.” “You know what, all of my wonderful followers on Twitter had my back and had that s–t trending real hard,” she notes. “They know that I’m right” for the job, she says, “because I’ve taught them so many things that you, Nev, did not.” “Everyone that I know — my team, my friends, the people who follow me — all contacted me like, ‘Kristen! He’s looking for a co-host!’” Krisen reveals. Her interest in the show was famous, so it’s natural that she would come to mind. “I thought it would be really fun to do one time,” Kristen explains. “I promote the s–t out of it and tell everyone to watch it.” Stassi reassures her that she did nothing wrong by being outspoken about her hopes. “That’s called manifesting,” Stassi notes. Kristen laments how Nev responded: “He was a complete a–hole about it.” If she just hadn’t gotten the role, that would be one thing. This rudeness is another matter. “I unfollowed everything,” Kristen says of things related to Catfish . “And I don’t watch the show anymore” She made this move “because that s–t [Nev said about me] was so beyond rude for someone who commends what you’ve done.” “He badmouthed me because he thinks he’s too f–king cool for school,” she theorizes. “He probably won’t even acknowledge this,” Kristen says. “But even if he wanted to say he was joking, it’s still f–king rude.” She is absolutely right. You can tell that Stassi is really heartbroken about this. “It breaks my heart because you’ve talked about this show for so long,” Stassi says supportively. “What do you want?” Kristen asks of Nv. “Do you want people to never speak about your show or be excited about it?” She has a very valid point. In a teaser clip for T.I. & Tiny: Friends and Family Hustle , Toya expressed her concerns about Reginae and Lucci’s relationship. “I don’t like the age difference,” Toya said. “I don’t like the fact that he have four kids because I mean, you trying to be stepmom, honey?” Reginae, 19, is nine years younger than Lucci and the couple often display their romance on social media. Toya knows first hands the struggles of dating a man in the industry and warned her daughter about the lifestyle that comes along with it. “You know how I feel about that whole rapper thing,” she added. “I dated your dad when I was younger than that and there’s a whole lot that comes with that lifestyle. And that’s the last thing I want or any mother want.” Despite her mother’s cautionary experience with love, Reginae is enamored by Lucci and professed her love for him, earlier in the interview, saying, “I really like him. Tyler Baltierra and Catelynn Lowell are currently in a great place. Like, a REALLY great place: The couple is expecting a baby ! On the October 15 episode of this MTV hit, Tyler seemed to hit rock bottom. Friends of the former Disney actor staged an intervention prompting Brown to enter a rehab facility. TMZ reports : We’re told, Orlando’s friend Danny Boy — the owner of a Vegas restaurant that the “That’s So Raven” star broke into last month — contacted Wendy Wheaton and Tommy Red, Hollywood producers with contacts in the rehab world. The plan was to get Orlando some help back in August, but he threw a wrench in that plan when he got arrested in early September after breaking into Danny’s joint. Orlando got out but went MIA for a few weeks. Fast forward to last Sunday … when Orlando made his way to a San Fernando Valley hotel where cops were called after he went off the rails. He was so bad off, his friends had to wait a few days for the intervention. Orlando’s now in a treatment facility for mental health and substance abuse issues. In a powerful and candid Instagram post this week, Taylor Swift urged citizens to take action next month and vote in the midterm elections. Not long afterwards, the singer took an action herself that she had not taken in three years: She performed on stage at an awards show. Indeed, Swift opened the 2018 American Music Awards on Tuesday night with a rendition of “I Did Something Bad,” reminding viewers everywhere that she deserves the honor she would later win at the ceremony. (Swift was named Artist of the Year and, in the process, became the most decorated female artist in American Music Awards history.) The 28-year-old pop sensation donned a sparkly long-sleeve leotard with over-the-knee leather black boots for her wildly-anticipated performance. She also brought the drama with smoke and a giant snake (!!!!!!!) – which has been her Reputation tour logo and which has been a response to being called a snake years ago by Kim Kardashian – behind her on stage. It was clear those in attendance were psyched to have Swift back in their lives. “They’re burning all the witches, even if you aren’t one/They got their pitchforks and proof,” Swift sings in the featured track. Having received some criticism from Republicans for not supporting any of their candidates in her aforementioned social media message, Swift did not back down at the AMAs. In her Artist of the Year acceptance speech, she didn't take any side… but she did remain political. “Thank you so much for this,” she said on stage, adding: “And I just wanted to make a mention of the fact that this award, and every single award given out tonight, were voted on by the people. And you know what else is voted on by the people? “The midterm elections on 6 November. Get out and vote – I love you guys.” And we love you, Taylor.
