Ari Graynor on Holy Rollers, Love Interest Roles, and Her ‘Quirky Jewishness’

Here at Movieline, we try to be cool and impartial, but when it comes to Ari Graynor, I’m just a full-blown advocate. Give this woman more roles! She can do scene-stealing supporting turns (like her perpetually wasted Caroline in Peter Sollett’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist ), tempting sexpots ( Whip It, Youth in Revolt ), and network TV arcs ( Fringe ) in equal measure, and she adds her own unique spin to the noir moll in Kevin Asch’s Holy Rollers , where she plays Rachel, a drug dealer’s girlfriend who entices Hasidic Sam (Jesse Eisenberg) further into a life of crime. Graynor called up Movieline last week to discuss what made the part an unlikely fit for her, what she was supposed to be doing in one recent Fringe appearance, and the comic book role she’s begging to play.

The Routemaster returns

Story by Mat Osman, le cool London Photo courtesy Transport for London Non-Londoners look away now. Because there are certain things that the rest of the country finds a little, well, odd about its capital citizens. Like the fact we take the most disgusting of all fish, the eel, as our signature dish and then further ruin them by encasing them in jelly. Or that a person can have a screaming fit on a crowded tube train and not a soul will say a word. And the fact we care about our buses. When the time came to retire the old Routemaster buses – you remember, the ones you could jump on and off when, inevitably, the bus was moving slower than walking pace – there was uproar. And it was a cross-party uproar. Tories didn’t like part of our heritage disappearing. Left-wingers saw it as the people’s will being trampled. And the rest of us just resented sitting in a traffic jam for 20 minutes while the bus stop was just 200 yards away. So come the last mayoral election, with a city sliding into debt, the Olympics hoving into view, and knife crime seemingly endemic, what was near the top of London’s agenda? Boris’s promise to reintroduce the Routemaster, that’s what. So now, deep into the Johnsonian reign – the Routemasters return. It’s a new design from Heatherwick Studio, that in truth bears little resemblance to the old Routemaster, (and, as was amusingly pointed out on Twitter, with a fringe that makes it look appealingly like the first Emo-bus). Reasons to be cheerful? The aforementioned fringe, the chance of swinging casually from the pole by the open back door like some sixties’ Carnaby Street cat, and not one but two staircases to avoid slowcoaches. There’s also a promise of a conductor; good news for a city where the bendy-buses are known simply as ‘free buses’ to millions of passengers. Not so good? Well, the open platform – the very thing that connects the new design with the Routemaster name – can be closed when there is ‘no conductor’ which, given cost-cutting measures, you can bet will be frequently. And these are only mock-ups – the real things won’t on our streets until late 2011. ‘Fringe’ Stars Say Season Three Will Be Less ‘Clear-Cut’

Joshua Jackson and John Noble look forward to the aftermath of Thursday’s finale. By Jocelyn Vena John Noble and Joshua Jackson Photo: MTV News Thankfully, the world didn’t come to an end on Thursday’s “Fringe” season finale . But the dimensions of the universe as we know it will never be the same. That means that when season three of the Fox show premieres this fall, fans might get to know the alternate versions of the characters a lot better. The stars are certainly looking forward to that prospect. “It’s a huge opportunity for an actor to do it,” John Noble, who plays Walter Bishop, told MTV News earlier this week said about playing “Walternate.” “The other thing about ‘Fringe,’ and we hope this will happen, is that while it’s very clear-cut now — everyone’s sort of rooting for the old team — I’m hoping that it won’t [remain] so clear-cut.” In the long run, viewers may find themselves torn between both sets of characters, Noble suggested. “The people on the other side have a very good case to make here,” he explained. “And then you say, ‘Who do [we go for]?’ If we can do that, we’ve created a great drama.” Joshua Jackson, who plays Walter’s son Peter, teased that seeing Peter’s mom again may convince him to go back to that other dimension. But after Thursday’s episode, there’s another woman that may get him to cross over again: his love, the real Olivia, who was left stranded on the other side after a quick bait and switch. “I can’t imagine a thing that would draw him more strongly back into the other universe: Here he is confronted with his mother … and then at the same time he has this — if not blood connection, but familial connection,” Jackson said. “He was raised and has lived and become connected to our Walter, so he really is dynamically torn. There are reasons for him to choose both.” Jackson argued that though what the alternate Olivia has done seems wrong, in the long run, he agrees with Noble that we just don’t know if those intentions are all that bad. “The other Olivia is sort of the polar opposite to the Olivia we have, or seemingly right now,” he said. “And Walternate is a bit of a polar opposite to the Walter that we’ve known, but if we do it well, you’ll get to know those alternates better. And you’ll see that they are fully fleshed-out characters as well.” What did you think of the “Fringe” season finale? Tell us in the comments!

Stephen Colbert on D&D

…….hey buddy,….everyone went through the “rat problem” phase. In the spring of 1976 I was in seventh grade. I had been reading science fiction for two years and had just started bleeding over into fantasy. One day at lunch I overheard my friend Keith saying, “I listened at the door, and I didn't hear anything, so I went inside and got attacked by a giant rat!” I said, “What do you mean, you listened at the door? What are you talking about?” They said, “Well, it's kind of hard to explain, but in this game called Dungeons & Dragons there's a probability that you'll hear something through a door, and my character's a thief so he can hear better. The game just came out. Come over Friday and we'll play.” I did and was instantly hooked. A whole new kind of game. No board — just dice, just probabilities. It allowed me to enter the world of the books I was reading. I put more effort into that game than I ever did into my schoolwork. We were all complete outcasts in school — beyond the fringe, beyond nerds. We were our own sub-dimensional bubble of the school. I'm not even sure we were on the rolls of any of the classes; that's how outcast we were. D&D made quite a little explosion when it first came out. We were close to the Bible Belt, and ministers were preaching on TV against it, saying that it was a cult,….. to be continued,…after these dots…………….. http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/dungeons-dragons-online/537989p1.html added by: remanns

Japanese government blocks a ban on child pornography

The ruling Democratic Party of Japan has refused to support legislation that would outlaw the possession of child pornography on the grounds that it would infringe individuals' freedom of expression – although there has been a stepped-up police campaign against people that sell sexual images of children. Twenty people were arrested this week for posting child pornography on a mobile phone web site that was set up by a 17-year-old high school student, while Japan was shocked earlier this year at the arrest of a mother who took indecent images of her infant son and sold them via the internet. The National Police Agency said it received 4,486 complaints from the public of child pornography on the internet in 2009 and a record 650 people were charged with offences related to child pornography. Campaigners believe that represents the tip of the iceberg. “We are urging all the political parties here to ban the possession of child pornography in the present session of parliament, but I am not at all optimistic that it will happen,” said Keiji Goto, a lawyer and chairman of the Forum for Creating a Society That Does Not Tolerate Child Pornography. In 2009 the government submitted a bill to revise the law on child pornography but lost the general election in August before it could be enacted. The DPJ opposed the bill and instead called for the definition of child pornography to be narrowed down, while acquisition for money and multiple acquisitions would be made illegal. “We consider child pornography to be the worst of all evils and we find it hard to understand how images of naked children tied up with ropes can be considered acceptable,” Goto said. “The only people who will be pleased at the failure to pass this legislation are paedophiles.” added by: cclark_productions

The Mad Science of Fringe: The Walternate Strikes Back

We went Over There in the aptly named opener to the two-part Fringe finale last night — over there, of course, being the other side, where an ID is a “show-me,” Martin Luther King Jr. is on the 20, and Agent Olivia Dunham is about 100 times cooler than she is over here. In addition to those revelations, however, Walter Bishop and Co. offered up a ton of fodder for the show’s scientific canon. But did these revelations jibe with what we already know?
