8-Year-Old Accidentally Exercises Second Amendment Rights

NORFOLK, VA—Gun owners nationwide are applauding the patriotic, though accidental, exercise of Second Amendment rights by 8-year-old Timothy Cummings Tuesday. “Timothy is a symbol of American heroism,” said NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre from Cummings' bedside at Norfolk General Hospital, where the boy is in serious but stable condition from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. “While praying for his recovery, we should all thank God that his inalienable right to keep and bear arms has not been infringed.” The incident occurred shortly after Cummings returned from school and found that his parents were absent from the house. Displaying what Second Amendment-rights groups are calling “good old-fashioned American ingenuity,” Cummings placed a pair of phone books on a stool to retrieve his father's loaded .38-caliber revolver from its hiding place on a closet shelf. After a preliminary backyard investigation of his constitutional rights claimed the life of Pepper, the family's cocker spaniel, Cummings fell on the weapon, causing it to discharge into his left thigh. “The framers of the Constitution would be so proud of what my boy did yesterday,” said Cummings' father Randall, 44, who originally purchased the handgun for home defense. “If 8-year-old boys discharging loaded firearms into their own legs isn't necessary to the maintenance of a well-regulated militia, I don't know what is.” Doctors worked for six hours to reconstruct Timothy Cummings' femur, which shattered from the impact of the high-velocity teflon-coated slugs, and to graft his remaining muscular and circulatory tissue over the fist-sized exit wound below his left buttock. Although the boy lost a great deal of blood, attending physicians say they are confident that he will recover sufficiently to resume active use of firearms, though his chances of walking again are slim. “For years, the people who want to take away our freedoms have said that we're not smart enough or responsible enough to own handguns,” Randall added. “Timothy is proof that even a child is capable of using a handgun for its intended purpose.” Enlarge ImageNRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre praising Cummings' “commitment to the American way.” Gun owners nationwide have flooded Cummings' hospital room with flowers, letters of congratulations and invitations to “come shooting.” Area firearms enthusiast and family friend Lloyd Stone showed his support by donating 18 inches of vascular material to help rebuild Cummings' left femoral artery. “He may be just a boy, but this use of the Second Amendment was a man-sized undertaking,” Stone said. “Timothy may need a wheelchair for the rest of his life, but with every step he doesn't take, he'll realize what the Constitution really means.” Although Cummings has yet to deliver an official statement on the incident, he regained consciousness long enough to discuss his immediate plans. “Please, I want to run and play again,” Cummings told doctors Tuesday night. “My leg hurts bad. Please make it stop.” Although gun-control advocates have criticized the boy's gun use, the NRA was quick to respond, calling Cummings' use of much-protested, teflon-coated “cop-killer” bullets “a victory for America.” “Timothy should be held up as an example to people who think we don't need these bullets—or fully automatic assault weapons, or concealable handguns which are impervious to metal detectors, for that matter,” said NRA president Charlton Heston, who plans to congratulate Cummings in person as soon as he is through lobbying for Senate repeal of recently passed legislation mandating background checks for gun buyers. “If we ban teflon-coated bullets, automatic weapons would be next,” Heston said. “Then all handguns. Obama administration announces massive piracy crackdown

While they may never be able to truly defeat piracy and drive it from the lurking depths of the internet, copyright protection attack-dog organizations like the RIAA and MPAA have long dreamed of the day when they would no longer have to pay for their own copyright enforcement. Now that dream is on the verge of coming true, thanks to the Obama administration. After countless lobbyist dollars from the music and film industry and a brief “public review”, the administration rolled out its vision to fight piracy yesterday afternoon. U.S. Vice President Joe Biden — whose blunt speech has sometime left him in trouble — did not mince words. He states, “This is theft, clear and simple. It's smash and grab, no different than a guy walking down Fifth Avenue and smashing the window at Tiffany's and reaching in and grabbing what's in the window.” The sound-byte comparing downloads to stealing jewels from New York City's finest jeweler quickly lit up the web. Bob Pisano, interim chief executive officer at the Motion Picture Association of America praised the VP, “It is especially critical that the United States has an effective framework for protecting creative content online and enforcing intellectual property rights in the digital environment.” According to the Obama administration, the RIAA, and MPAA, the world economy is pretty much doomed if we don't start prosecuting pirates at home and abroad. Without such a crackdown, businesses will go bankrupt the coalition argues. Biden states, “Piracy hurts, it hurts our economy.” Interestingly, the statements seem to fly in the face of a recent Government Accountability Office study released to U.S. Congress earlier this year, which concluded that there is virtually no evidence for the claimed million dollar losses by the entertainment industry. That study suggested that piracy could even benefit the economy. Another noteworthy study from three years back notes that virtually every citizen violates intellectual property laws in some way on a daily basis. The White House press release was full of buzz phrases, but short on details. It did however indicate that the U.S. government may increasingly monitor filesharing networks and BitTorrent sites and assist media groups in their prosecution/threat letter efforts. It speaks of improved “law enforcement efforts at the Federal, state and local level.” The biggest effort, though, will be devoted to cracking down on piracy websites in the U.S. and overseas. The administration was short on details of how exactly it would convince piracy-loving nations like China to change their ways, but it did say it would try to do so by “being as public as we possibly can” about infringement. The press release states, “As we shine the spotlight on foreign governments that have rogue actors doing illicit business within their borders, it's the government's responsibility to respond.” Such efforts have shown mild success. After lots of threats against the Swedish government by the U.S., the European Union nation finally tried admins with the nation's largest torrent site The Pirate Bay last year and found them guilty. The trial was later exposed to be a perversion of the justice system, with the judge who gave the verdict have multiple ties to copyright protection organizations. The verdict — $3M USD in damages and a year of hard prison time for the admins — is currently being appealed. The White House's vision is perhaps a prelude to the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which will go before Congress later this year. The bill would make P2P or BitTorrent client development a criminal offense if the distributed software was used for infringement. It also implements an interesting provision called “imminent infringement”, which allows the government to charge people who they think might be about to infringe with a civil offense (for example if you searched “torrent daft punk”). This is among the first official “thought crime” provisions to be proposed by the U.S. government. The bill also makes it a criminal offense to bypass DRM. Ultimately, it should be interesting to see how American taxpayers react to President Obama's decision to spend their money on efforts to prosecute them and try to choke out piracy at home and abroad, particularly when the current evidence is inconclusive of its effects. Chicago Tribune: Supreme Court ‘Extends Gun Rights’

“Supreme Court extends gun rights” a headline on the Web site for the Chicago Tribune erroneously claims today. The link on the page brought readers to a story entitled “Supreme Court extends gun rights in Chicago case.” Here’s the opening paragraph: WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court reversed a ruling upholding Chicago ‘s ban today and extended the reach of the 2nd Amendment as a nationwide protection against laws that infringe the “right to keep and bear arms.” But that language suggests that the Court invented a right out of whole cloth rather than grounded its decision in the Constitution itself. In truth, what the Supreme Court found in McDonald v. City of Chicago was that the 2nd Amendment’s guarantee of the individual’s right to firearm ownership is incorporated to the states via the 14th Amendment’s Due Process Clause. “The right to keep and bear arms must be regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as the States legislated in an even handed manner,” Justice Alito wrote for the Court.  The bottom line: The Supreme Court recognized that the City of Chicago was in violation of the the 2nd and 14th Amendments to the federal Constitution. A more accurate headline would have been “Supreme Court finds Chicago gun ban violates Constitution.” Of course, that presupposes the liberal media in Chicago are interested in shooting straight when it comes to reporting developments with which they have an ideological disagreement.

Holland’s football future is totally safe with rich crop of youngsters | Thomas Watt

There are some fine young players in the Netherlands to keep Holland among the leading powers beyond the World Cup The days of totaalvoetbal are long gone but have always cast a long shadow over the Oranje, never more so than when a tournament comes around. No other European side are expected to do more than just win their matches; the Dutch have a brand of football which the world expects to see. The dominant philosophy at this year’s tournament has been “win at all costs”, while the English have long had an attitude of “it isn’t enough to win, others must lose”. The Netherlands and Brazil are arguably the only remaining nations where the attitude is “win and win well”. Indeed, the great Uruguayan football philosopher Eduardo Galeano described the Oranje as “the Latin American team I like the best”, before going on to suggest that they were an “orange fire that flitted back and forth, fanned by an all-knowing breeze that sped it forward and pulled it back”. The class of 2010 may be more pragmatic, with slightly more emphasis on not conceding goals, but the spirit of ’74 remains part of the national make-up. They will always be one of the more entertaining sides, even in an era of more conservative football. Not only do you not know what you are going to get, but they are varied, luxurious, melt in the heat, and the orange one is everybody’s second favourite. The squad which Bert van Marwijk has assembled are no different; a temperamental, unpredictable, often flamboyant group of players, with more collective experience than any previous Dutch squad. What is clear is that this is the last chance for many of their number. Giovanni van Bronckhorst has already stated that he will retire after the finals. Andre Ooijer will likely play his final internationals before a move to Roda JC, while Mathijsen, Boulahrouz, Braafheid, Van Bommel and Kuyt will all be the wrong side of 30 by Brazil 2014. The Euro 2012 campaign may well see the changing of the guard, but the Dutch will not be hindered as their system remains loosely the same, and the nation produces like-for-like replacements to fit that system. There are, of course, quality reinforcements in the current squad (who may or may not have one eye on a British TV broadcasting job come World Cup 2026). Eljero Elia looked spritely against Denmark and were Van Marwijk a more adventurous coach the young Hamburg winger would certainly start against Japan on Saturday. Elia won the 2009 Johan Cruyff Prize (the Eredivisie Young Player of the Year) while at FC Twente, and earned himself a move to Hamburg last summer. The transfer to the Bundesliga looks to have settled him, as his form was so good it even earned him a place in the lucrative Honigstein Team of the Season . Ibrahim Afellay is a relative veteran at 24, not least because he has been playing regularly for PSV for the last six years. Equally capable on the wing or in the centre of the park, he is lightning quick, possesses amazing vision and has been attracting attention from Europe’s big guns for some years. Afellay is joined in South Africa by Gregory van der Wiel, Ajax’s marauding right-back and last season’s Eredivisie Young Player of the Year. At only 22, Van der Wiel has attracted favourable comparisons with Michael Reiziger (when he was good, not the jigsaw-kneed journeyman Middlesbrough fans got). Both Afellay and Van der Wiel are expected to follow Elia out of the Eredivisie this summer, with England a likely destination. The Eredivisie has been seen as a fertile feeding/breeding ground for English sides for some time, and there are a number of highly rated youngsters already with Premier League clubs. Chelsea will send the 18-year-old Jeffrey Bruma on loan next season (most likely to Twente), and his team-mate Patrick van Aanholt may well follow him. Arsenal look set to sign Kyle Ebecilio, Bruma’s 16-year-old cousin, to add to their own orange contingent. It is clear that the future Dutch stars will most likely move abroad, but who are the boys most likely become stars within the Netherlands? Jeremain Lens was in the provisional squad for the World Cup, and was unfortunate not to have made the final 23. After a successful season in which he managed 12 goals in 20 starts, Lens opted to move from AZ Alkmaar to PSV Eindhoven, where he is seen as the long-term replacement for Danko Lazovic. The Dutch may also find that they have a ready-made replacement for Mark van Bommel in the 23-year-old Twente midfielder Wout Brama, already on the fringes of the national side, or Groningen’s tough-tackling Danny Holla. Brama’s team-mate Luuk de Jong – younger brother of Ajax’s Siem – is expected to take over from Blaise Nkufo in leading the Twente line next season and both brothers are tipped to make an impact. The fate of the Dutch national side is perennially held in the hands of the two clubs with the finest youth systems in the land. Ajax and Feyenoord produced more than half of the 1974 World Cup squad and thirteen of the current squad owe some part of their education to one of the two Klassieker rivals. In the current Feyenoord squad there are two young players who will be lighting up a far bigger stage soon. Leroy Fer anchors the Rotterdam side’s midfield, and looks set to develop into an Edgar Davids-style box-to-box midfielder. Ferocious in the tackle, sensible with possession and capable of driving forward runs, the 20-year-old has been singled out by his captain, Van Bronckhorst, as one of the best players in the side. He is joined in midfield by Georginio Wijnaldum, named by Fifa as one of the 40 best young talents in the world. Wijnaldum was full-back tormentor-in-chief last season, and possesses a Bergkamp-sized bag of tricks, flicks and party pieces. The 19-year-old is also deceptively strong and direct, capable of riding challenges and holding off defenders. If words don’t do justice to his potential, see for yourselves. Although he has only featured in three games for the men from De club van Zuid , remember the name Luc Castaignos. As a quick and skilful striker Castaignos has been a revelation for the Dutch Under-17s squad, finishing top scorer at last year’s European Championship. In doing so, he broke the all-time goalscoring record for the Dutch at that level, overtaking the tally jointly held by Collins John and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Of course, being a young talented Dutch striker, he has been scouted by Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United, Internazionale, Arsenal, blah, blah, blah … but a couple of good seasons in the Eredivisie would surely be more beneficial than an early move abroad. Ajax continue their fine tradition of discovering and nurturing the finest young talent in the world. In Vurnon Anita they may have unearthed the long-term replacement for Van Bronckhorst. The young left-back has kept two internationals on the bench this season, and at only 21 he has five years of first-team experience. Although he was one of the unfortunates cut from the provisional squad for 2010, Anita will be hoping to be first-choice left-back in time for the 2012 European Championship. There are also high hopes that Daley Blind can replicate at least some of the success his father, Danny, had at club and country level, while the winger Jeffrey Sarpong has flirted with the first team and spent last year on loan at NEC. Arguably the finest prospect of all is Siem de Jong, an attack-minded midfielder in the Sneijder/Van der Vaart mould. De Jong managed 15 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions last year, a record which will not be without admirers. Of course the best result for the Netherlands could be that these youngsters stay where they are and learn their craft properly, rather than risk moving too early. Dutch football is always producing “the next big thing”, but such players as Nacer Barazite, Ryan Babel, Marvin Emnes, Vincent van den Berg and Quincy Owusu-Abeyie have risked football purgatory by moving abroad early in their careers. Matthews Teases His Documentary About Scary and Violent Tea Party

If Chris Matthews’ preview, on Tuesday’s Hardball, of his MSNBC documentary Rise of the New Right, is an indicator of what his special will be like expect a lot of rehashing of Matthews’ various attacks on the Tea Party over the past year as he conflates them and the likes of Rush Limbaugh with the birther movement and ominously warns of their potential for violence. Matthews even warned his viewers that his special “will stun you” and that the “voices you’ll hear” and “the guns you see” will explain why “you’re seeing men at political rallies for the first time ever, wearing guns.” In a segment that featured conservative Pat Buchanan and leftist David Corn of Mother Jones, Matthews included the Limbaugh as a member of the “new right” that is “justifying violence.” CHRIS MATTHEWS: Pat these people are saying things about the country that just aren’t true. The President is not legitimate. That the, that the federal government is a tyranny. They are justifying violence. DAVID CORN, MOTHER JONES: Don’t forget secret FEMA camps! PAT BUCHANAN: Well look that’s, I think that’s preposterous. Look now, I’m sure you can go out there, you’ve got a country of 300 million and find people- MATTHEWS: Okay I’m talking about people like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, I’m not talking about strangers here. BUCHANAN: Alright but you’re taking, you take Joe McCarthy in 1954, four years into his crusade, 50 percent of the American people thought he was doing a good job. Twenty percent, what I’m saying is, take a look… MATTHEWS: That’s the point. I’m not denying the popularity of these people. That’s why we did the documentary. To say how scary it is. The following exchanges and final commentary from Matthews were aired on the June 15 edition of Hardball: CHRIS MATTHEWS: Pat you’re one of the stars of this not because you’re a current hero but because you were a pathfinder. What I find stunning about this, and I think liberals, progressives, people from the center left will be stunned and scared by what they see tomorrow night. People on the right may find themselves yelling “right on, right on!” because a lot of this documentary is people on the right saying their thing from Glenn Beck to Rush Limbaugh to Orly Taitz to all these people out there, Alex Jones, saying their thing. It’s a true documentary, as you know. What is it today that scares people about Washington government to the point where some are arming themselves? They’re calling it illegitimate. This government was elected legitimately. They’re calling it a tyranny. It’s not right/left anymore. It sounds revolutionary these people. All of them. Tea Party, militia, patriot groups, truths, birthers, the whole crowd. PAT BUCHANAN: Well, I think you’re mixing an awful lot of things. MATTHEWS: Well there’s because they use the same language. BUCHANAN: But look, look I don’t know the Michigan militia guys. I don’t go out with them into the woods and things like that. And I don’t know if these guys with guns and things like that, really represent our Tea Party. What you gotta ask, Chris, is how is it that a Tea Party that you described in a one-hour documentary as very dangerous and in some ways threatening, had a 2-1 approval record and the Tea Party was more admired and approving of than the Democratic Party and the Republican Party as of a couple of months ago. Where you’ve got it pretty close, I think Chris, is on the second part. I think the first part would be like me doing a documentary on the civil rights movement and starting off with Stokely Carmichael and H. Rapp Brown and you know Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad and then you get around to Whitney Young and, and Martin Luther King. MATTHEWS: Yeah but Martin Luther King was never a black nationalist. He wasn’t calling for separation. Let me go to you, David. It seems like what strikes me in doing this, and reporting it is the use of the flag “Don’t Tread on Me.” The great Gadsden flag from South Carolina. These people are referring to the federal government of the United States which was honestly elected. Nobody questions the election of Barack Obama. He won with a good, what? 53, 54 percent. DAVID CORN, MOTHER JONES: Well some actually do. MATTHEWS: Well look they’re saying he’s not an American. They’re saying he’s illegitimate. CORN: Yeah. MATTHEWS: This language I’ve never heard before. CORN: What was interesting to me about, about the piece that you did was, that you show the continuum between people, Dick Armeys of the world, who you interview, who was a member of Congress, you know libertarian conservative. You know helping to stir up the Tea Party. And then you have someone like Alex Jones who you just saw in that clip. Radio talk show host who says he’s not right, says he’s not left. But he says that basically there is a planetary elite that literally has a secret plan to kill 80 to 99 percent of the population. And you have Rand Paul going on his radio show every couple of months, in which they talk about the threats to liberty. Now I’m not saying that Rand Paul believes the conspiracy theories of Alex Jones, but by appearing on that show he is somewhat legitimating- MATTHEWS: Right. CORN: -Alex Jones as a voice of the right. MATTHEWS: Why, look Dick Armey, we all like, I’ve known Dick Armey forever. Dick Armey will not disown the birthers. Now this is where I think you’re wrong Pat. Thirty-two percent of Republicans, self-identified Republicans are birthers now. They believe the President wasn’t born in the United States now. The latest CBS poll. So you can’t just say it’s a fringe crowd. BUCHANAN: Alright well let me talk as a political figure- MATTHEWS: I mean can you imagine a third of the Republicans you know believing this guy is not an American. It’s true. BUCHANAN: Well Chris there about one-third of African-Americans in this country think that George Bush was responsible for either blowing up or deliberately not doing anything- MATTHEWS: What poll was that? BUCHANAN: I saw it after New Orleans. Because they said, because it was black folks there. Now what do you do about that? Here’s what I do about birthers, I say, no. I think the Honolulu Advertiser. They didn’t huck that up. I think he was born in Hawaii. And they say, “Well we don’t think so.” I’d say, well who are you going to vote for? If the say, “Well we’re gonna vote for you I’d say thanks, fine.” But you- MATTHEWS: Even though you’re de-legitimizing the government and justifying a lot of talk here. BUCHANAN: I’m not legit-, Chris there are people out there in my movement, all over the place that got views- MATTHEWS: Okay. BUCHANAN: -that I don’t agree with. What are you gonna say? I don’t want your vote or I don’t want your vote? MATTHEWS: You don’t think it’s dangerous for people to believe this government is illegitimate? BUCHANAN: Mean in what sense? MATTHEWS: And believe it’s illegitimate. Meaning it was a usurped power taken from the people. Somehow this guy is not an American. Somehow he was elected- BUCHANAN: I understand the birthers but I don’t know anybody that doesn’t think this was a legitimate election. MATTHEWS: They say he shouldn’t have been on the ballot. CORN: This is a danger and we’ve talked about this on the show before. If you have people out there saying that Barack Obama has a, is a secret Muslim, as one of the people say on your documentary, or he has a secret plan to destroy America or that America will cease to exist if what he wants, if he wants goes through, it does send a green light, a signal to people: “Wait a second. This is about life and death.” This is… MATTHEWS: Okay let’s take a look, first of all Dick Armey. CORN: And then what do you do? People out there are gonna get the wrong message about taking extreme action. MATTHEWS: Okay. BUCHANAN: Well you know, like Lee Harvey Oswald. I mean take a look at these guys who have done all the shooting in the sixties. MATTHEWS: By the way the trouble is this rationalizes all kinds of behavior. Let’s take a look at this. This is the origins of the Tea Party voices you’ll hear right now. Let’s listen. (Clip from documentary) MATTHEWS: And then you have the head of the John Birch Society saying that Ike was a communist, his brother Milton was a communist. All communist discipline guys. Pat these people are saying things about the country that just aren’t true. The President is not legitimate. That the, that the federal government is a tyranny. They are justifying violence. CORN: Don’t forget secret FEMA camps! BUCHANAN: Well look that’s, I think that’s preposterous. Look now, I’m sure you can go out there, you’ve got a country of 300 million and find people- MATTHEWS: Okay I’m talking about people like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, I’m not talking about strangers here. BUCHANAN: Alright but you’re taking, you take Joe McCarthy in 1954, four years into his crusade, 50 percent of the American people thought he was doing a good job. Twenty percent, what I’m saying is, take a look… MATTHEWS: That’s the point. I’m not denying the popularity of these people. That’s why we did the documentary. To say how scary it is. … MATTHEWS: Let me finish tonight with our big documentary coming up here tomorrow night. The Rise of the New Right at 7pm Eastern tomorrow night will stun you with what’s happening with this country. You’ll never again believe this so-called Tea Party movement is just about taxes or deficits or Obamacare. No, what you’ll see is far more like the original Tea Party up in Boston, the one that previewed our war against the British. Look at the Gadsden flag they wield, that warning of “Don’t tread on me” with the coiled rattlesnake. In 1776 it served warning to those who threatened America from abroad. Today it’s being waved in contempt of our own honestly elected American government in Washington. Listen to Rush Limbaugh stir on the new right by calling the government in Washington “a regime” or Orly Taitz, leader of the birthers, calling the President illegitimate. Listen to militiamen on guard against tyranny here on the Potomac and you get the full force of what’s happening. This isn’t about what the tax rate should be. It’s an argument about whether the federal government deserves toppling like any other tyranny or illegitimate regime in history. It’s not the talk of politics, but of revolution. Listen to Limbaugh, Beck and Palin and Michele Bachmann, Orly Taitz and yes Rand Paul and you hear of a Washington that has usurped authority, of a president who is not one of us, of a Congress that needs to be investigated for treason. Of a country itself that’s been taken over and needs to be taken back. The voices you’ll hear speak for themselves. The guns you see, the semi-automatic weapons of the arms of those who see the government of the United States as the looming tower of tyranny. If I can put it as bluntly as possible, catch The Rise of the New Right here tomorrow night at 7:00pm and you’ll suddenly get why you’re seeing men at political rallies for the first time ever, wearing guns.

During the “Last Word” segment on Bloomberg Television’s Political Capital on Friday, Bloomberg News columnist Margaret Carlson – formerly of CNN and Time magazine – tore into Nevada Republican Senate nominee Sharron Angle – who will be taking on Harry Reid in November – as Carlson charged that Angle is “on the fringe, almost wacky,” and asserted that Nevada voters would have to be “completely masochistic” to vote for her. Carlson: You can’t beat somebody with somebody who’s as on the fringe, almost wacky, as Sharron Angle, unless the voters turn completely masochistic. She’s not just against (MEANT TO SAY “in favor of”) abolishing EPA, Energy, Education, phasing out Social Security, and getting rid of the income tax, she wants our nuclear waste to go to Nevada. Fellow panel member Kate O’Beirne of the National Review responded: “I’d hoped over the years I had built up Margaret’s tolerance for conservative women, but, sadly, that’s apparently not the case.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Friday, June 11, Political Capital on Bloomberg Television: MARGARET CARLSON: Harry Reid went to bed as happy as a man can be who’s in the crosshairs of the Republican party on Tuesday night because the least electable candidate won that race, Sharron Angle. MSNBC’s Matthews Openly Roots for Birther Candidate Taitz to ‘Bring Down’ California Republicans, ‘I Would Tie Her Up Like a Wit

Appearing on the 10:00 p.m. edition of MSNBC’s Countdown show on Tuesday to discuss the day’s primary election results, Chris Matthews expressed his delight that Orly Taitz – a prominent member of the birther movement that pushes the bizarre theory that President Obama was not really born in America – won the Republican nomination for secretary of state in California, and expressed his hope that the fringe candidate would drag down the Republican ticket in the state. Matthews celebrated what he termed a “malignancy” within the Republican party as he openly rooted for Taitz to hurt the GOP: Keith, we`ve got good news tonight. And that`s the probable nomination of Orly Taitz in California for secretary of state. This is a true malignancy on the Republican party. She will bring down the other two candidates for high office out there. She`ll probably bring down Carly Fiorina, and may well bring down Meg Whitman because she is unacceptable to any reasonable voter. Matthews went on to advise that California Democrats “tie her up like a witch at the stake”: It is tribalist, it`s malignant, and I believe if I were a Democratic officeholder out there or had anything to do with the Democratic party with Jerry Brown`s campaign, I would tie her to them like a fencepost. I would tie her up, I should say, like a witch at the stake. This is a malignancy. Matthews went on to reiterate that he thought that Taitz’s current success in California’s Republican party was “wonderful news”: CHRIS MATTHEWS: I think that`s wonderful news that she`s been included in the inner sanctum of the Republican ticket out there. KEITH OLBERMANN: Yes. MATTHEWS: She`s been attending their events. OLBERMANN: Karl Rove did not get up and walk out. Let me ask you about Arkansas. MATTHEWS: He should have.

Proposed Mosque at Ground Zero draws protests

A proposed mosque and community center at Ground Zero continues to draw protest from the right wing fringe. Sunday, close to a thousand angry, uninformed Americans gathered in lower Manhattan to demonstrate against plans to build the mosque and community center near the site of Ground Zero, where the twin towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed by Islamic hijackers on September 11, 2001. Opponents of the proposed mosque call it “offensive” and “demeaning”. Anna Paquin on Bisexual Announcement: D’uh!

In an April PSA, Anna Paquin came out as a bisexual . The True Blood cast member has since received a lot of praise from gay rights organizations and the LGBT community. But Paquin recently said that she doesn’t even see the big deal. It was her responsibility as a human being to speak out. “I’m not someone who endlessly talks about her personal life for no reason, but obviously, as someone who identifies as bisexual, those are issues I really care about – and frankly, I don’t see why everyone doesn’t care about them,” the actress told Zap2it, adding: “So when I was asked to participate in that PSA, it was just an obvious, ‘Well, of course I will.'” Paquin, who is engaged to True Blood co-star Stephen Moyer, continued: “It wasn’t like it was a big secret. It was just a cause I cared about and privately supported, but not one that I had ever had an opportunity to speak out about in a way that would be useful. Obviously I know that one person’s voice doesn’t necessarily do that much, but I just wanted to do my bit.” You gotta admire that, don’t you? The star doesn’t see herself as any kind of revolutionary. She simply wonders: How can any person with a heart sit idly by while the rights of others are infringed upon? We couldn’t agree more.
