Wiz Khalifa Contemplates Success In ‘The Race’

The Pittsburgh MC talks about his new Rolling Papers today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV’s ‘Rapfix Live.’ By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Through hard work Wiz Khalifa has risen from heralded underground rapper to hit-making star in the past year, and he addresses his ascent on his new album, Rolling Papers. On the I.D. Labs-produced track, “The Race,” the Pittsburgh lyricist takes a smoke-filled trip down memory lane. “I’m in the race and taking the winner’s place,” he waxes melodically on the song. “No foot on the breaks/ One of the best, homey, that’s what they call me/ It’s lonely at the top, ain’t no company/ So now I just stunt on my own, I just stunt on my own.” “It’s a personal song without being too preachy,” Wiz told MTV News about the track as he celebrated his album’s release on Tuesday. “It really just explains how I feel at certain points. Just doing work, anyone can feel like that when you grinding from the bottom and get to a certain point. You see people who, in the beginning or middle, were riding with you, then there’s some adversity, and at the end of the day, it’s about who’s with you in the end.” After being tapped as a rising star by Rolling Stone while he was still in high school and putting out a series of mixtapes and an independent album, the 23-year-old Wiz was soaking up his recent success as he inked his name on copies of Rolling Papers at a Best Buy in Manhattan. “It’s totally exhilarating to see kids lined up outside, screaming, wanting the album and purchasing the album,” Wiz said. “It was actually, like, a year ago that I first started working on the album. “I didn’t really know where I was going, but I knew I was going somewhere,” he added. “To have it done and to see the full vision and for people to be excited about it and the entire buildup, it’s just really magnificent.” Wiz Khalifa makes his second appearance on MTV News’ “RapFix Live,” hosted by Sway on Wednesday (March 30) at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Lady Gaga Gives Whitney Houston Grammy Awards Shout-Out

‘When I wrote ‘Born This Way,’ I imagined she was singing it,’ Gaga said accepting award for Best Pop Vocal Album. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga accepts the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images After hatching from her egg and being “Born” onstage, Lady Gaga won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster. Gaga beat out Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Susan Boyle and John Mayer for the big prize. Taking the stage in a high ponytail, dominatrix-style leather bustier, knee-high boots and sunglasses, Gaga took the trophy from Selena Gomez and her onetime tourmate, New Kid on the Block Donnie Wahlberg. “Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart to all my fans, all the monsters, watching,” she said, clutching her prize. “Thank you to my father, my mother, my beautiful sister, Natalie, I love you.” After thanking family and friends, as well as her managers and record label team, the singer shared a personal message. “I had this dream when I was really young that I could be whoever I wanted to be … and no matter what I envisioned for myself, that I would do it, no matter who didn’t believe in me,” she said. “Thank you so much.” Although most of Gaga’s acceptance speech was devoted to the people you would imagine, she also had a thank-you for one unexpected person. “I need to say thank you tonight to Whitney Houston. I wanted to thank Whitney because when I wrote ‘Born This Way,’ I imagined she was singing it because I wasn’t secure enough in myself to imagine I was a superstar. So Whitney, I imagined you were singing ‘Born This Way’ when I wrote it. Thank you.” Moments before winning the Best Pop Vocal Album Grammy, Gaga performed “Born This Way,” the first single off of her May album of the same name. The pop star also took home the prize for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Bad Romance” earlier on Sunday night (February 13). Dr. Conrad Murray’s Defense: Michael Jackson Killed Himself

Prosecutors in the Michael Jackson manslaughter case alluded to the defense Dr. Conrad Murray is likely to use in court – that the singer killed himself. Not on purpose of course, but according to the legal team of the physician on trial for his death, Jackson killed himself with a fatal dose of Propofol. L.A. County Deputy D.A. David Walgren says it’s “clear the defense is operating under the theory that the victim, Michael Jackson, killed himself.” REASONABLE DOUBT? Is Murray’s theory enough to beat the rap? Murray claims he left Michael’s bedroom the day he died (June 25, 2009) to go to the bathroom. MJ awoke and, in a moment of frustration, injected a massive dose of the anesthetic Murray was administering to treat his insomnia. Walgren said of the Dr. Conrad Murray and his lawyers in court, “They don’t want to say it, but that’s the direction in which they are going.” In fact, they don’t want to say anything . At the preliminary hearing, the defense plans on staying silent and letting the D.A. reveal its hand. The defense believes there’s no way this is not going to trial, and as such, will wait to see the prosecution outline its case before it decides how to proceed, using both the above theory and claims that other doctors over-medicated Michael .

Chris Brown, Raz B Apologize For Twitter Feud; Singer Professes Love For Gay Fans

Chris Brown denies he is homophobic. Nevertheless, he says he is sorry for making crass sexual references in his Twitter feud with Raz B . “Yesterday was an unfortunate lack in judgment sparked by public attacks from Raz B, who was bent on getting attention,” Brown said .

Chris Brown Apologizes For Homophobic Raz-B Twitter Rant

‘Words cannot begin to express how sorry and frustrated I am over what transpired publicly on Twitter,’ singer tells TMZ. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images A day after launching a series of N-bombs and homophobic tweets in the direction of former B2K singer Raz-B , Chris Brown was feeling contrite Thursday (December 30). The singer, who recently boasted about his completion of a court-ordered, yearlong domestic-violence course as part of his sentencing for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna, told gossip site TMZ that he regretted making crude sexual comments that were considered homophobic. “Yesterday was an unfortunate lack in judgment sparked by public Twitter attacks from Raz-B, who was bent on getting attention,” Brown said of the virtual feud. “Words cannot begin to express how sorry and frustrated I am over what transpired publicly on Twitter. I have learned over the past few years to not condone or represent acts of violence against anyone.” On Wednesday, the “Deuces” singer got charged up when Raz-B tweeted a comment critical of Brown in the midst of a flurry of tweets in praise of Rihanna. “I’m just sittin here thinking how can n—as like [Eric Benet] & [Chris Brown] disrespect women as intelligent as Halle Berry, Rihanna,” Raz wrote. Brown quickly shot back, tweeting , “N—a you want attention! Grow up n—a!!! Di– in da booty ass lil boy.” The harsh comments were an apparent allusion to allegations Raz-B made (and later retracted) that B2K manager Brian Stokes had molested him. Several other homophobia-tinged responses followed, but, unlike in the past when Brown went into Internet silence after making heated statements, he vowed that this time, he would not delete his Twitter account. “I was minding my damn business and Peter pan decides to pop off!!!” Brown wrote. “I’m not mad though!!! I’m just not silent nor am i one of these scary R&B cats!!” In light of the harsh statements, Brown followed up by writing, “I’m not homophobic! He’s just disrespectful!!!” Since the Rihanna assault, Brown has made a series of outrageous or confounding statements that he quickly followed with apologies or retractions. He followed that pattern on Thursday, when he told TMZ, “Molestation and victims of such acts are not to be taken lightly; and for my comments I apologize — from the bottom of my heart.” An unnamed source connected to Brown pointed out that Raz’s allegations against Stokes were suspect, adding that regardless of their veracity, Brown’s comments were not acceptable. “I love all of my fans, gay and straight,” Brown went on to say. “I have friends from all walks of life and I am committed, with God’s help, to continue becoming a better person.” Though Brown was extending an olive branch, TMZ also noted that Raz’s brother, the singer known as Ricky Romance, posted a video threatening that if he saw Brown in Los Angeles, he would “put my mother—-ing pistol in your mouth.” A spokesperson for Raz noted that Ricky’s comments do not represent Raz’s feelings but are the result of a protective instinct among siblings. “Raz-B has already spoken to his brother and told him to chill out,” the spokesperson said. Lindsay Lohan Possibly Likens Her Jail Sentence to Human Rights Violation in Tweeting Rampage

We put nothing past Lindsay Lohan. Nothing. That said, she did not overtly compare her legal plight to that of an Iranian woman being tragically stoned in her latest Twitter rant. But you still have to wonder. Maybe she’s just so moved by Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who may be stoned to death for adultery, that she linked to Newsweek article to draw attention to it. Or she’s trying to subtly draw a ridiculous parallel to herself, having been sentenced to 90 days in jail Tuesday for repeatedly, brazenly violating her probation. Come on. Has Lindsay ever cared about anything besides herself? We’re talking about a spoiled brat who walks into court with the words “f–k u” on her nails . Just saying. Simon Cowell Gets Elaborate Farewell From Paula Abdul, ‘American Idol’

‘I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am,’ Simon says on ‘Idol’ finale. By James Montgomery Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Although the main point of Thursday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” finale was — in theory, at least — to crown a new champion, ever since Simon Cowell announced back in January that he’d be leaving the show at the end of season nine, fans had been wondering just how tonight’s show would unfold. Now we know. Cowell’s departure was treated with equal parts humor and sadness, a mix of a Friars Club roast and a genuine, heartfelt tribute show. And, somewhat fittingly, it culminated in the single largest performance in ‘Idol” history. Show producers poked fun at Cowell’s notoriously prickly demeanor with a series of vignettes, titled “Simon Cowell: Uncovered,” which featured some of his greatest put-downs and bust-ups, along with joking barbs from his soon-to-be former fellow “Idol’ judges. “I think Simon has an incredible poker face. He’s got an ability to really hold back what he’s feeling,” Kara DioGuardi said, while a montage of Cowell cracking up during particularly odious auditions rolled. “He’s very professional.” “Is Simon a flirt?” Paula Abdul asked with a laugh at one point. Abdul, of course, shared the judges’ table for eight years with Cowell. “Yeah, if you’re a mirror,” she said. There was also a song that sampled some of Cowell’s greatest put-downs (“You sounded like a cat being thrown off a skyscraper”; “If you win this contest, we will have failed”; “You sounded like a background singer for a background singer,” etc.). The ditty was performed by comedian Dane Cook, but oddly, it was interrupted by onetime Cowell sparring mate Ian Bernardo, who swiped the mic and launched into a “Kanye moment,” declaring, “Nobody cares, it’s all about Ian Bernardo tonight. I’m going to replace you tonight Simon!” The mic was quickly wrested away from Bernardo by none other than fellow “Idol” oddball Normund Gentle, as cameras pulled away and show producers cut to commercial break. And yet, for a guy who had spent nine seasons shooting down the dreams of “Idol” hopefuls, it was a strangely fitting tribute too. Also jibing with both the “oddball” category was Abdul’s appearance. She appeared center-stage to pay homage to her friend and former colleague, but things quickly devolved, as she joked in her patented mumbled banter about leaving the show because she and Cowell had a love child. Still, things quickly improved from there, as Cowell was serenaded by seven of the eight “Idol’ champions, all of whom had been crowned under his watch (only David Cook was M.I.A.). Then a group of some of the show’s other favorites from seasons past joined the seven, swelling the total number of performers to well over 30. As the crowd cheered, host Ryan Seacrest beckoned Cowell onto the stage, and gave him the microphone. Standing center-stage, with some of the greatest “Idols” surrounding him, the man known for his massive ego seemed downright touched. “I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am. … The show goes forward, it will be different, but I just want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the support, the fun, and your sense of humor,” Cowell said. “You know what he truth is, when everyone asks who’s going to replace me, who’s going to be the next judge, the truth is, you guys are the judge of this show. And you’ve done an incredible job over the years … it’s been a blast.” And then he turned to Seacrest — his sparring partner of nine years — and, getting a bit choked up, said, “Even you … I’m going to honestly, honestly miss you.” As the show cut to commercial, Cowell smiled and waved to the crowd … it was genuinely touching. The end of an era. The beginning of the end. Both. Oh, and like, 20 minutes later, Lee DeWyze won. As if anyone cared. What did you think of the “Idol” farewell tribute to Simon?
