Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps: How Did They Fare?

Missy Franklin and Michael Phelps, two U.S. standouts from the first week of the London Olympics, each leaped back in to the pool this afternoon in hopes of adding to their already-impressive medal count. Did they succeed? NBC will air the races tonight, so stop reading now if you wish to be surprised on television… YES! Both Franklin and Phelps took home even more Gold, leaving competitors far behind and leaving an even more indelible mark on these Games. Franklin actually set a world record in the 200 meter backstroke, touching the wall in 2 minutes 4.06 seconds, a full second ahead ofRussia’s Anastasia Zueva. The winning medal is Franklin’s third Gold and fourth overall. And she’s only 17, people! Phelps, meanwhile, already the most decorated athlete in Olympic history , increased his haul with a come-from-behind win in the 100 meter butterfly. The ridiculous star now possesses 17 Gold medals and 21 in all. CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH!

Kick-Ass Sequel ‘Keeps Standard’ of the First: Aaron Johnson

The Kick-Ass sequel was a forgone conclusion but speculation mounted on when it would occur and if its stars including Aaron Johnson would take part. But all turned out fine and Jeff Wadlow will direct from his script, a follow up to the original that debuted at SXSW back in 2010 that went on to gross $103M at the box office worldwide. That’s a lot of ass-kicking! Star Aaron Johnson told Collider that he’s seen the script and it shouldn’t disappoint. “It’s pretty much set to go this fall,” he said. “I think now [Chloe Grace Moretz] and [Christopher Mintz-Plasse] are on board. I’m certainly set up to do it…Yeah, I think it’s going to happen.” Asked about the script, Johnson assures that the new version will keep the faith. “Oh, yeah! It keeps the standard from the first film.” Continuing, Johnson adds about creator Matthew Vaughn: “The only way he was ever going to make a sequel was if it could be anywhere close to the first one, and keep that class and that quality, and just maintain something original and new and refreshing.  And this script delivers all of that, right now.” [ Collider ]

Justin Bieber Urges Norweigian Fans to Chill, Listen to Police

The title of Justin Bieber’s latest single is ” Die in Your Arms .” Now we can only hope this won’t be the singer’s fate as he tries to navigate his way through the streets of Norway. Bieber is in Oslo to perform four songs outside that city’s famous opera house – as part of Justin Bieber: All Around the World , a special that airs June 21 on NBC – but crazed followers from around Europe have created a positively chaotic scene that has led police to nearly declare a state of emergency. Justin Bieber Fans Flip Out in Norway With Justin in a secret, secure location, authorities are urging him to hurry up and take the stage so they can then clear the streets – but so far the Biebs has simply responded to the mass hysteria via a Tweet that reads: “…for the show to happen u must all listen to the police. we are all concerned for your safety and i want what is best for u. please listen.” This is far from the first time that overly enthusiastic Justin Bieber fans have caused violent problems. Heck, fans in New Zealand once trampled his mom ! Seriously, people, try to relax. His hair isn’t that adorable.

Kimbra Renews Her Vows For Stateside Release

New Zealand-born singer says her 2011 album has ‘gone through a bit of an evolution’ for its May 22 release in the U.S. By Jocelyn Vena Kimbra Photo: MTV News Kimbra has already topped the charts as Gotye’s former love on his smash hit “Somebody That I Used To Know.” This week, the New Zealand-born songstress will finally release her genre-defying Vows in the U.S. The album, which incorporates dance, pop and alternative, will be released on May 22. And despite the fact that Kimbra’s “lived for these songs for nearly five years,” she found a way to renew her Vows by featuring five new songs on the Stateside release. “It kind of feels like it’s gone through a bit of an evolution,” she told MTV News. “For that reason, I feel refreshed going out to promote it. It still feels new.” In order to freshen up the album, she enlisted the help of some legendary producers, including Greg Kurstin (who’s worked with the Flaming Lips and the Shins) and Mike Elizondo (who worked with Dr. Dre). “I just think you learn a process that works for you,” she said. “I think I took a lot from the first few years of making Vows and then when I came here to work in America, I knew the ways I like to work.” Kimbra said she’s enjoyed exploring different genres on the new tracks, including girl-power anthem “Warrior” with A-Track and Mark Foster as well as the funky “Come Into My Head.” “It channels a bit of a funk thing, which is something I’m dabbling in more now with the live band,” she said of “Come Into My Head.” “It’s got a lot of syncopation and quite a heavy groove, so, I think, maybe that’s a new direction for me to start exploring on the second album, perhaps.” Related Artists Kimbra

Wreck-It Ralph Teaser Poster: 8-Bit Baddie Goes Good

Video games have inspired many a movie in the post-Atari age, but Disney’s CG-animated November adventure Wreck-It Ralph puts a spin on things: It follows an 8-bit villain named Wreck-It Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly) who escapes the confines of his video game and journeys through the arcade to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero. As such, the early art work has been retro-tastic, and this week’s new teaser poster is no different. Take a gander and get ready to explain to the iPhone-toting, Tweet-happy kiddies what “8-bit” means. The synopsis: Walt Disney Animation Studios and Emmy®-winning director Rich Moore (TV’s “The Simpsons,” “Futurama”) take moviegoers on a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping journey in “Wreck-It Ralph.” Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly, “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” “Step Brothers”) is tired of being overshadowed by Fix-It Felix (voice of Jack McBrayer, “30 Rock”), the “good guy” star of their game who always gets to save the day. But after decades doing the same thing andseeing all the glory go to Felix, Ralph decides he’s tired of playing the role of a bad guy. He takes matters into his own massive hands and sets off on a game-hopping journey across the arcade through every generation of video games to prove he’s got what it takes to be a hero. On his quest, he meets the tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Jane Lynch, TV’s “Glee”) from the first-person action game Hero’s Duty. But it’s the feisty misfit Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman, “The Sarah Silverman Program”) from the candy-coated cart racing game, Sugar Rush, whose world is threatened when Ralph accidentally unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens the entire arcade. Joran van der Sloot Pleads Guilty, Confesses to Murder of Stephany Flores

Joran van der Sloot pleaded guilty Wednesday morning to the murder of Stephany Flores, a Peruvian woman he had met at a casino in Lima in 2010. Perhaps not coincidentally, the murder took place exactly five years to the day after the disappearance of American teen Natalee Holloway in Aruba. Joran van der Sloot remains the main suspect in that case. He was apparently in fairly good spirits after formally confessing to the killing today: Joran van der Sloot Laughs After Confession In court in Peru, he said he is “truly sorry” for the killing of Flores. He said that from the first moment, he ” wanted to confess sincerely ” to the killing. His lawyer stated that van der Sloot killed Flores as a result of “extreme psychological trauma” he suffered from the fallout over the Holloway case. Van der Sloot faces a possible 30 years in prison in the killing, though the guilty plea was aimed at winning a lighter sentence than that maximum. The defense had claimed the killing was manslaughter, as it was not premeditated. That crime carries a minimum sentence of just five years. In a confession, he had said he killed her in a fit of rage after she discovered on his laptop that he’d been linked to the Holloway disappearance. Prosecutors claimed, however, that he plotted to kill and rob Flores after learning she had won a lot of money at the casino where they met.
