Kick-Ass Sequel ‘Keeps Standard’ of the First: Aaron Johnson

The Kick-Ass sequel was a forgone conclusion but speculation mounted on when it would occur and if its stars including Aaron Johnson would take part. But all turned out fine and Jeff Wadlow will direct from his script, a follow up to the original that debuted at SXSW back in 2010 that went on to gross $103M at the box office worldwide. That’s a lot of ass-kicking! Star Aaron Johnson told Collider that he’s seen the script and it shouldn’t disappoint. “It’s pretty much set to go this fall,” he said. “I think now [Chloe Grace Moretz] and [Christopher Mintz-Plasse] are on board. I’m certainly set up to do it…Yeah, I think it’s going to happen.” Asked about the script, Johnson assures that the new version will keep the faith. “Oh, yeah! It keeps the standard from the first film.” Continuing, Johnson adds about creator Matthew Vaughn: “The only way he was ever going to make a sequel was if it could be anywhere close to the first one, and keep that class and that quality, and just maintain something original and new and refreshing.  And this script delivers all of that, right now.” [ Collider ]

‘Does Superman Get His Ass Kicked?’: The Story of Phoenix Jones Reaches Logical Next Step

Today in MPAA Hypocrisy: Good vs. Bad Oral Sex, Kids With Weapons

I get just as tired of writing this crap up as you probably do reading about it, but for some reason it feels like the beginning of the end of Hollywood in a way: The MPAA ratings board is under assault again for determining the oral-sex sequence featured in Blue Valentine is worthy of at least some of the film’s NC-17, while letting the same act — by two women — slide in the R-rated Black Swan . Oh, and then there’s the kid with the knife.

Is a Kick-Ass Sequel Really a Good Idea?

It seems like only yesterday we were sitting around the office wondering what went wrong with Kick-Ass , the story of a downmarket superhero that did mid-market business (at best) at the box-office. But $96 million worldwide — plus whatever it has coming to it on video — is reportedly enough for a follow-up to the modestly-budgeted original. Or so its source’s author says.

Matthew Vaughn in Running for X-Men: First Class?

An intriguing Friday rumor has Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn at the top of Fox’s list to helm its reboot X-Men First Class . Having proven his dexterity and skill with young people in costume killing villains, the director would merely need to leave the C-word behind and this is his. But does he want it? Sources close to Vaughn say maybe not. Developing… [ Deadline ]

Friday Box Office: The Losers

April: It’s the new September. After last weekend’s disappointing returns, this weekend is poised to do worse . Only Jennifer Lopez’s abysmal The Back-Up Plan reached $4 million on Friday, and it won’t even be in first place come Sunday because of holdover How to Train Your Dragon . Also debuting: The Losers , which, duh. For commentary, check the title. Oh, and for the thirty-seven of you who still care: Kick-Ass saw a Friday-to-Friday drop of 63 percent and landed in fifth place. Cue the wails of “You’re expectations were too high!” The top-five after the jump.
