The Week in Pictures: Behind the Scenes With First Divers to Explore BP Oil Spill Underwater, ‘Top Kill’ Attempt is Working, 8% of Sunscreens are Safe, Fish with Hands Discovered, and More (Slideshow)

It’s been over a month since the $560-million oil rig Deepwater Horizon exploded and sunk and vast quantities of oil are still leaking into the Gulf of Mexico, causing an environmental catastrophe of epic proportions. Yesterday morning U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen told the media that BP’s “top kill” effort has “stabilised the wellhead” and that pressure coming from the well is now “very low”. On Monday, along with ABC’s Sam Champion, chief ocean correspondent for Planet Green Philippe Cousteau dove in the oil spill; they were the first to do so. Aside from BP … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Mexico Oil Spill of 2010

In a decision to control the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, which can be considered as one of the worst in the U.S. history, the United States Coast Guard is aiming to burn off the part of affected areas. The process of burning the oil may start as early as Wednesday as the oil slick has turn to within 20 miles of the Louisiana coastline. The decision on burning the oil has its own pros and cons, is still not furnished. The process to put the oil on fire starts by using a 500-foot-long, flame-retardant boom used to gather oil, and whatever is collected in the boom would be burnt. Or else, the entire spill would not be set on fire at once. The problem is that a drilling rig, the Deepwater Horizon, went kaput, detonated, and sank at a site, some 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana. That left the oil leaking at the rate of about 42,000 gallons a day from the well. Further investigations will be conducted with regards to this serious problem that the U.S. is facing. Oil Rig Explosion an Environmental Problem

photo by Gerald Herbert The Oil Rig Explosion is now one of the major Environmental problems for it has sunk below the water. That’s not the only problem that is facing right now but also the eleven missing workers. The ultra -deepwater dynamic positioned semi submersible oil rig that was built in 2001, began burning Tuesday night and sink into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday.  The oil rig exploded after the uncontrolled release of gas from the well during the construction of the reinforcing well of the oil rig. This oil rig is owned by Transocean, the largest offshore drilling contractor. It is said that the Deep Water Horizon has a diesel of 700,000 gallons but it was unsure of how much burned during the fire. Due to explosion, 300,000 barrels leaks a day which is not only a threat to marine life but also from the coastline of nearby beaches such as Louisiana which is about 60 miles away from the rig. Rescuers are now searching both air and water for the missing eleven workers which has the slim chance of finding them alive. Authorities are now looking for the best way on how to solve the facing dilemma because of the explosion. Oil Rig Explosion an Environmental Problem is a post from: Daily World Buzz Continue reading
