Amy Lee Says Album Art ‘About Evanescence, Not Just Me’

Self-titled album is the first that won’t feature the frontwoman on its cover. By James Montgomery Evanescence album artwork Photo: Wind-up Records If one were to study the covers of Evanescence ‘s first two albums, they’d quickly notice that, aside from all the dark swirly bits, they share another rather unifying concept: Namely, they both feature frontwoman Amy Lee … and only frontwoman Amy Lee. Of course, things are different these days. For the first time, Lee says that Evanescence are really, truly a band, and the songs on their upcoming third album are the end result of countless hours spent hammering out rhythms and melodies together. Which is why they made the decision to call the new album, simply, Evanescence . For further proof of this point, one only has to glance at the cover of the album, which features nothing more than the band’s name (and some of the prerequisite dark and swirlies). And while some fans may be mystified by the simple design, Lee told MTV News that there’s definitely a message behind the minimalism. “Well, both of our other records are me on the cover, and I think it’s cool to have that photo, you know, that people can look at and go, ‘OK, that’s who that is.’ But I feel like, by now, they know who we are, and I wanted something really different,” she said. “I didn’t feel like we had to put a photo on the cover, I wanted it to be more mysterious and more about Evanescence itself, not just me. ” And that concept extends beyond Evanescence ‘s cover image. As Lee explained, on the new album, she and her musical mates are exploring every aspect of the band … starting with the name itself. Because, for the first time, Evanescence is more than just its frontwoman. “The idea to not have any photos on the outside I thought was really cool,” she said. “And all the images and the artwork is a play on the meaning of the word ‘Evanescence.’ It means ‘to dissipate like vapor,’ so I decided to go with light and vapor … it’s really about Evanescence, not just me.” What do you think of Evanescence’s new album art? Paramore Taking A Break In 2011 To Record New Album

‘We’re kind of at the end of this [ Brand New Eyes ] record but it’s bittersweet,’ Taylor York tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Taylor York Photo: MTV News Paramore is definitely wrapping up the decade on top with a year that included a slew of chart-ruling hits and a huge cross-country trek. So it’s not surprising that when MTV News cornered Hayley Williams and Taylor York at the Z100 Jingle Ball red carpet on Friday, they couldn’t stick to just one highlight of the year. Instead, they obliged us with a few of their major 2010 moments. “[There’s] been so many big ones,” Williams said. “We got to play the VMAs , we went on the biggest US tour we’ve done to date, played two shows at the O2 arena in London. It’s just been like, one thing after another. [It’s like a] high climb and I hope we get to keep climbing for a little bit longer.” York said that the crew doesn’t have much lined up for last few remaining weeks of 2010, but revealed they plan to retreat from the spotlight in 2011 to tinker on an upcoming album. “The year has kind of been topped. We don’t have much more for the rest of this year. We’re going a tour in South America and then we’re taking time off and we’re writing for a new record,” he said. Although a new project beckons, York admitted that moving on from the success of Brand New Eyes is a bit difficult. “We’re kind of at the end of this record but it’s bittersweet.” As the band heads off to craft their fourth LP, Williams said they plan to take the same time-tested approach to making new music that proved successful with their previous work. Although their “Twilight” soundtrack smash “Decode” was penned on the road , the frontwoman maintained they prefer to knock out a record at their home base in Tennessee. “We wrote ‘Decode’ [while on tour] … we didn’t expect it and then everything happened with that one and so that was good. You never know,” she conceded. “We like to do it at home mostly. We like to wait and kind of really focus on the records when we have time off.” What do you think Paramore’s new album will sound like? Let us know in the comments!
