Jesus Take The Wheel: Eight Suspects In Custody After Brutal Beating Of Teen In South Carolina

Eight teens are in custody (7 of which are juveniles) for brutally attacking another teen in South Carolina: All eight suspects are in custody after a brutal attack in Five Points early Monday morning which left the teenage victim in critical condition, according to Columbia police. Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said 19-year-old Thyeem Henrey was charged with second degree assault and battery by mob, common law robbery, and criminal conspiracy. He appeared in court Friday afternoon where the judge set bond at $750,000. That bond does not allow Henrey’s release upon posting only 10%, which is sometimes permitted by the court. At his first court appearance on the latest charges against him, Henrey gave no indication what might have led to Monday morning’s savage assault. But he cried as the frustrations of the victim’s parents boiled over. “I’m having to give you my right to judge whether he deserves freedom or not,” said Strange’s mother Vicki. “That’s hard for me. But since Carter didn’t fight against them eight Sunday, I’m going to fight for him now. I’m going to fight for him until my last breath.” “I pray that you get your life right,” said Strange’s father John. “Find God. If you pray for forgiveness, he will forgive you. I don’t have that in my heart right now. Maybe one day, but not today. The 19-year-old is the only adult in a group of eight being held by Columbia police. The other seven suspects are all juveniles, according to Timmons. Their names cannot be released. She said a 14-year-old, 15-year-old, and 16-year-old were charged with strong arm robbery, second degree assault and battery by a mob, and criminal conspiracy. A 13-year-old and three other 16-year-olds were all charged with criminal conspiracy, according to Timmons. Police Chief Randy Scott said the 18-year-old victim, later identified as Carter Strange, was jogging through a parking lot near the intersection of Blossom Street and Saluda Avenue just after midnight on Monday when the assault happened. “This teenager was minding his own business, trying to make his curfew when he was brutally attacked and robbed,” said Scott. Police said Henrey and the seven juveniles he was with were roaming Five Points, targeting others until they came across strange. In fact, investigators said the group tried unsuccessfully to rob or assault at least four other people. Carter’s family told police the beating was so severe he required emergency surgery to remove a brain clot. He had his second surgery Friday afternoon, which was for facial reconstruction. It’s Carter’s latest step in a long road to recovery. “He did nothing to them,” said Vicki. “They didn’t know him, they didn’t know the kind of person he was, they don’t know the kind of man he’s grown up to be and they don’t know the lives he’s touched. But they thought he was so less of a person, they thought this would be okay.” SMH. Sad at how young the suspects in this case are…hopefully the victim has a speedy recovery. Source

Green Day Defeat Paramore In Musical March Madness Championship

The 2011 MMM title game went down to the wire, but in the end, it’s Green Day who stand triumphant. By James Montgomery Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: C Flanigan/ FIlmMagic It’s all over but the shouting (and there’s still plenty of that): Green Day are the champions of MTV’s 2011 Musical March Madness tournament, knocking off an upset-minded Paramore in Monday’s title game to claim the crown. Check out our MMM Bracket right here! In a contest that was waaay more thrilling — and higher scoring — than the actual NCAA basketball championship game, the guys in Green Day jumped out to an early lead, then held on for dear life as Hayley Williams and company staged a furious second-half comeback … one that, ultimately, fell short as polls closed at midnight. All in all, more than 120,000 votes were cast in the matchup, and Green Day ended up winning by fewer than 2,500. It was a nail-biter, a squeaker, and it came down to the wire. In other words, it was everything you could possibly want in a title game. And, in Green Day, we have everything we could possibly want in a champion. After an ugly opening-round loss in last year’s MMM tournament, the pop-punk veterans committed themselves to redemption, and tipped off the 2011 competition by blasting Adam Lambert in round one. Focused, Green Day then took out their frustrations on fellow heavyweights U2 and Blink-182, before surviving scares from Panic! at the Disco in the Elite Eight and Disturbed in the Final Four. And now, having bested Paramore, they stand atop the MMM mountain … battle tested, redeemed and, ultimately, triumphant. So congratulations to Billie Joe, Tr

Former ‘American Idol’ Contestant Alex Lambert Not Homeless, Rep Says

Singer tweeted that he was living on the streets of Los Angeles. By Gil Kaufman Alex Lambert Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images On the eve of the season 10 debut of “American Idol,” one of last season’s most lovable losers has gotten himself back into the news. Perhaps you remember (though probably not) stage-fright-wracked singer Alex Lambert , the talented but nervous guitar strummer whose ouster unleashed an online petition of support from more than 13,000 fans who wanted him reinstated to the show. Well, on Monday night, Lambert posted a string of tweets in which he claimed he’d been forced to live on the streets of Los Angeles since October, when he wrapped up his stint on the reality series “If I Can Dream,” the online show he fled to after being booted from “Idol.” After chatting with some fellow fans and former “Idol” pals about his frustrations with the music biz, Lambert dropped this bombshell: “Ever since ‘IICD’ ended I’ve been kinda homeless! Sleepin on the street and behind buildings. I have a choice to stay and pursue my career or go back to texas and not do music! I’m usually a strong person but I can’t take it anymore. I’ve been goin to coffee shops and other stores so I can tweet to my snaf! Because to be honest! You guys are all I really have!” According to Entertainment Weekly, however, things are not nearly as grim as they might seem. A spokesperson for an “Idol” production company, 19 Entertainment, which manages many of the show’s contestants, confirmed that the tweets did come from Lambert but denied that the 20-year-old Texas singer is sleeping behind dumpsters. “He’s not homeless. I don’t know where that came from,” the unidentified rep told EW, explaining that there’s good reason to believe that Lambert should have the ability to pay for housing thanks to his development deal with 19. “He’s on a retainer, and he’s getting money every month,” the spokesperson said. “He’s working on demos. He’s with writers, he’s working on music. … He’s not homeless. How could he be texting? How could he be going into [the] recording studio and sleeping on the streets? There’s no record deal yet, but hopefully these demos … something could come from that.” Perhaps someone at 19 had a chat with Lambert about his down and out in Beverly Hills claims, since he updated his status on Tuesday afternoon, writing, “Sorry for the miscommunication 😉 I’m just fine! MAHALO!” And even though he claimed to be living on the streets, he asked his followers not to feel sorry for him, adding, “I know a lot of people think I tweeted my living situation for publicity! But I don’t give a damn about fame!” But then he muddied the waters again with some follow-up tweets in which he stated emphatically, “I’m real! And I don’t lie! and I would never lie to y’all! (y’all being my supporters who got my back through thick and thin) F— yeah I was … sleepin outside! That sh– sucks too! I’m goin back home to get my sh– together! But I will be back! And I’m comin strong! LETS DO THIS!” Don’t miss our “American Idol” live stream “Judging the Judges: An ‘Idol’ Without Simon,” featuring post-show analysis from Jim Cantiello and special guests, on MTV.com tonight at 10 p.m. ET. The Game Robbed While Christmas Shopping

The rapper claims that he had valuables stolen from a friend’s car while they visited an L.A.-area mall on Christmas Eve. By Jayson Rodriguez The Game Photo: Moses Robinson/ WireImage It wasn’t exactly Yuletide blessings over at The Game’s house during holidays. The Los Angeles rapper claims that he was robbed on Christmas Eve. He vented his frustrations via Twitter , saying robbers relieved him and a friend of a luxury travel bag, jewelry and cash while his associate’s car was parked in valet outside of a local mall. “So, heres my day: tried 2 do last minute shoppin 4 da kids & valet stole a Louis Duffle out @ avanterose ‘s car & we 2 chains & $75,000 short,” The Game wrote in several messages . “So police come & guess who get patted down ? Yea, US !!! then they tell us da palmtree was blocking the crime scene on the tape.” According to the rapper, he’s going to search for justice by his own means. He threatened the Topanga Mall Nordstrom valet drivers with an offer to deliver them gifts after the holiday. The Game, however, noted that he and his associate are both on probation, so they couldn’t properly voice their displeasure with the valet employees while police were present. Last month, The Game attempted to reconcile with former mentor 50 Cent once again. The Compton native reached out to the G-Unit head honcho via Twitter about rejoining the crew populated by Fif, Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo. (Young Buck, like Game, was ousted by 50 for being disloyal.) “@50cent Aye n—a, get on twitter & let’s get this sh– movin !!! G-G-G-G- well, you know the rest,” Game’s note to 50 read. “@50cent All it take is ‘ONE PHONE CALL’! U call me, I call BUCK, tell Banks holla at Yayo & dat puts HIP HOP @ OUR MERCY! #UknowUcdisN—A. Anybody don’t like it, F— YALL!!!” 50 questioned Game’s sincerity and dismissed the olive branch, though, saying the rapper’s motive was to promote his long-delayed release, The R.E.D. Album . Newsweek’s Alter Distorts Gingrich’s Ground Zero Mosque Opposition

You can agree or disagree about former Speak of the House Newt Gingrich’s view on the Ground Zero mosque, but is it fair to vilify him with a false characterization of his views? Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter had a peculiar take on Gingrich’s point of view during a Sept. 13 appearance on Fox Business Network’s “Imus in the Morning.” He expressed his frustrations with the attacks on Islam, as it pertains to public discourse with not only the Ground Zero mosque, but also the idea of people burning Qurans, which has garnered a fair amount of attention from the left-of-center media . “[I]t’s insane,” Alter said. “And what are we supposed to have, a war with a billion people? So, this is out of control. And, it’s kicked off something pretty ugly.” But one of the lynchpins of his frustration were comments from Gingrich , which Alter took some liberties with his interpretation of the former House Speaker’s sentiments. “And when you have people like Newt Gingrich, I think, my big takeaway from this is that he’s just completely destroyed any — the last shred of legitimacy he had to comment about anything. My favorite line by Gingrich is he said, ‘You know, when Saudi Arabia allows us to build churches and synagogues there, then we’ll put mosques in the United States, and until then, other mosques should close, too.” But Gingrich’s statement about the mosque referred specifically to the Ground Zero mosque, not all mosques in the United States. He elaborated, “If the people behind the Cordoba House were serious about religious toleration, they would be imploring the Saudis, as fellow Muslims, to immediately open up Mecca to all and immediately announce their intention to allow non-Muslim houses of worship in the Kingdom.”

Wash Post’s Anne Kornblut: Why, Despite Obama’s Healing Efforts, Is There So Much Anti-Muslim ‘Resentment?’

Washington Post staff writer Anne Kornblut used her question at a White House press conference on Friday to worry that, despite Barack Obama making it a “priority,” anti-Muslim “suspicion” still existed in America. She queried the President, ” Nine years after the September 11th attacks, why do you think it is that we are now seeing such an increase in suspicion and outright resentment of Islam, especially given that it has been one of your priorities to improve relations with the Muslim world? ” [MP3 audio here .] Obama’s response seemed to echo his infamous 2008 comment about Americans being “bitter” and “clinging” to their guns. He proclaimed, “You know, I think that at a time when the country is anxious generally and going through a tough time, then, you know, fears can surface, suspicions, divisions can surface in a society. And, so, I think that plays a role in it.” On April 11, 2008 , the then-Senator condescended, “It’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” Of course, Kornblut had no follow-up and didn’t challenge Obama on his latest assertion. A transcript of the September 10 question and answer can be found below: 11:32 ANNE KORNBLUT: Thank you, Mr. President. Nine years after the September 11 th attacks, why do you think it is that we are now seeing such an increase in suspicion and outright resentment of Islam, especially given that it has been one of your priorities to improve relations with the Muslim world? BARACK OBAMA: You know, I think that at a time when the country is anxious generally and going through a tough time, then, you know, fears can surface, suspicions, divisions can surface in a society. And, so, I think that plays a role in it. One of the things that I most admired about President Bush was after 9/11, him being crystal clear about the fact that we were not at war with Islam. We were at war with terrorists and murderers who had perverted Islam, had stolen its banner to carry out its outrageous acts. I was so proud of the country rallying around that idea, that notion that we are not going to be divided by religion. We’re not going to be divided by ethnicity. We are all Americans and we stand together against those who would try to do us harm. And that’s what we’ve done over the last nine years. We should take great pride in that. And I think it is absolutely important now for the overwhelming majority of the American people to hang on to that thing that is best in us, a belief in religious tolerance, clarity about who are enemies are. Our enemies are al Qaeda and their allies who are trying to kill us, but have killed more Muslims than just about anybody on Earth. You know, we have to make sure that we don’t start turning on each other and I will do everything that I can as long as I’m President of the United States to remind the American people that we are one nation under God and we may call that god different names. But we remain one nation and, you know, as somebody who, you know, relies heavily on my Christian faith in my job, I understand, you know, that the passions that religious faith can, can raise. But I’m also respectful that people of different faiths can practice their religion, even if they don’t subscribe to the exact same notions that I do. And that they are still good people and they are my neighbors and they are my friends and they are fighting alongside us in our battles. And, you know, I want to make sure that this country retains that sense of purpose. And I think tomorrow is a wonderful day for us to remind ourselves of that.
