For Discussion: Why This Year Will Be “The Whitest Oscars” In A While

The 83rd annual Academy Awards nominations are in and of course there were a lot of snubs, heartbreak and questionable nods but there was also what some critics believed to be a fundamental “breakdown when it comes to honoring black actors.” The Hollywood Reporter’s Film Editor Gregg Kilday, who wrote the article “Whitest Oscar in Ten Years” back in September agrees, that “this year there wasn’t a real small, serious-themed movie about African American subjects that the Academy could turn to for nominations.” Movieline’s S.T. VanAirsdale, however, lays some of the blame directly on the Academy. In an interview with Popeater’s Jo Piazza he says the voting members were “a historically lazy group of viewers who aren’t going to discover or nominate anything independently.” Just last year, many black actors and producers represented in films like The Blind Side, Precious and Invictus. The Best Actress nominees included Gabourey Sidibe and winner Mo’Nique. It was also the same year that Geoffrey Fletcher became the first black winner of a Best Screenplay Oscar. The years before that usually had at least one black actor or actress nominated from Taraji P. Henson and Viola Davis in 2008, Ruby Dee in 2007, Will Smith and Forest Whitaker in 2006, Terence Howard in 2005, and so on. So what exactly happened this year? Some claim it was a lack of “films that take a serious look at African American themes,” while others blame it on the fact that “Hollywood is making fewer serious, a.k.a. Oscar-worthy films,” in general. But why does the film have to necessarily address so called African American themes? Why not just hire the best actor/actress for the role. Then again, this is Hollywood. While many of these things leave me scratching my head. One thing I can say for sure is that in 2011, there still seems to be an underlying problem of casting any minority as a lead actor or actress in a film. Do we even need to address the whitewashing of “The Last Airbender” or the whole “Prince of Persia” fiasco. Now whether this all stems from a fear of the film becoming stereotyped, a box-office flop or the fear of not being able to attract the cross marketing/multimillion-dollar campaigns necessary to garner Oscar attention is still up for debate. All I can say for sure is that Hollywood needs to get it together asap. Or should I start to address the other issue of why 90% of GLBT actors do not play GLBT roles in TV or film? Or is that asking too much? Discuss…. Source

Justin Long Shares His ‘Die Hard 5’ Ideas

‘It’s going to be Gabourey Sidibe and Bruce teaming up, finally,’ Long jokes. By Kara Warner Justin Long Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images The last time we heard any news on “Die Hard 5,” Bruce Willis assured us that an official green-light for the film was “imminent.” Given that small but hopeful tidbit, when we caught up with Willis’ “Live Free or Die Hard” co-star Justin Long recently, we had to ask whether or not the “Going the Distance” star had yet been approached to reprise his role in the fifth film. “I had a meeting recently at Fox about doing a romantic [comedy],” Long recalled. “And the guy in the office next door, he was in charge of the new ‘Die Hard,’ [so] I said, ‘Do you mind if I pop my head in?’ So I met him and I was like, ‘Ummm?’ ” the actor explained, gesturing with his hands in a motion that suggested “What about me?” “He was equally vague in his gesture back to me,” Long said. “So I didn’t get a good feeling that I was going to be a part of the imminent ‘Die Hard.’ I don’t know if I’m going to get my hands on it.” He added, “I would love to.” Whether the film happens with or without Long is still up for debate. Regardless, Long offered up some unique ideas regarding a possible storyline for the fifth film. “For a while, there was talk of, they were going to combine ‘Die Hard’ with ’24,’ ” Long said. “It was going to be Kiefer Sutherland’s character in it [to which we responded with a very suspicious, raised brow]. I’m not kidding!” Long insisted. “I think there was a script that had been imminent,” he said seriously — and then veered off course completely. “Now it’s going to be ‘Die Preciously Hard,’ so it’s going to be Gabourey Sidibe and Bruce teaming up, finally,” Long joked. Perfect. Bruce Willis and Gabourey Sidibe in a “Die Hard” movie … it’s about time! “That’s what the fans are saying, it’s about time! It’s ‘Die Hard Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.’ ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Zach Galifianakis Breaks Down MTV Movie Awards’ Breakout-Star Rivals

‘Hangover’ funnyman selflessly chooses ‘Precious’ star Gabourey Sidibe to take it home: ‘This woman should win it.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Zach Galifianakis Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Zach Galifianakis was everywhere in 2009. There was his breakout turn as a loveable bearded doofus in “The Hangover,” his co-starring role as a loveable bearded doofus in HBO’s “Bored to Death” and all manner of Web vids and big-screen cameos as a … well, you get the idea. In that inimitable deadpan manner of his, Galifianakis professes to be utterly sick of himself. He’s in the minority. Fans have voted him into the category of Best Breakout Star at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards. And while the voting is still going on over at MovieAwards.MTV.com , Galifianakis assessed his competitors and came away convinced another star would walk away with the win this Sunday. He called “Up in the Air” actress Anna Kendrick “good,” while Chris Pine of “Star Trek” was dubbed a “handsome man.” Of Oscar-nominated Gabourey Sidibe (“Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”), Galifianakis said with a devilish grin, “I haven’t seen that movie, but she and I have the same trainer.” Nor had Zach checked out the “The Blind Side,” though he wished Quinton Aaron “good luck” in the Breakout Star category. Which brought Galifianakis back to Sidibe. “This woman should win it,” he declared. Not that he’ll be there to take in the festivities at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. “When is it?” he asked us at one point. Sunday, June 6, Zach. “Oooh boy,” he responded. What, you have somewhere better to be? “You know what? I can’t,” he confessed. “I have a palm reading that day.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Gabourey Sidibe Proves She’s Not Precious, MGMT Rock Out On ‘SNL’

‘Movies are not real life,’ actress sang in monologue, spoofing confusion between her and ‘Precious’ character. By Amy Wilkinson MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden performs on “Saturday Night Live” Photo: NBC “I love being happy. I’m not Precious,” actress Gabourey Sidibe crooned cheekily during her monologue as host of this week’s “Saturday Night Live,” featuring musical guest MGMT . The Academy Award-nominated star of “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” took to the Studio 8H stage to perform a doo-wop-style opening number, making light of the confusion between her and the downtrodden character she portrays in the film. “Movies are not real life. That’s something you should know,” she sang, adding, “Mariah Carey doesn’t have a mustache.” The 26-year-old then sped through a hodgepodge of largely loud-mouthed and irritated characters. She donned dreadlocks to play a Jamaican nurse hawking a heal-thyself manual opposite Kristen Wiig’s Suze Orman. She yelled at kids on her front stoop as an elderly, know-it-all neighbor whose daddy used to sell “Wikipedias.” And she competed at the “2010 Public Employee of the Year Awards” as a surly St. Louis DMV worker. Sidibe also teamed up with Andy Samberg, with whom she appeared in promos earlier in the week, for the Digital Short “Cherry Battle.” The pair, clad in Obi-Wan Kenobi-style getups, spit cherries at each other in slow motion. Brooklyn-based MGMT performed two songs off their recently released sophomore album, Congratulations. First up was “Flash Delirium,” a tune the band released digitally March 9 to tease the new album. They followed that up with “Brian Eno,” an ode to the British musician and producer. “It’s kind of a vampire-punk-rock song about finding Brian Eno in like a cathedral in Transylvania,” singer Andrew VanWyngarden told New York magazine last year. “He’s like a dark wizard. We originally asked him to produce the track, but he hadn’t heard of us.” The band is currently on tour and will play at May’s Sasquatch festival and August’s Lollapalooza. The next new episode of “SNL” airs May 8 with host Betty White and musical guest Jay-Z . The “Golden Girls” star landed her hosting gig thanks to a fervent Facebook campaign launched earlier this year encouraging producer Lorne Michaels to have White on the show. Related Artists MGMT
