Mid-Day Discussion: Quickie iPad Impressions

It’s the Monday after a holiday, so my work day has been pretty hectic so far. Whenever I have a chance, I’ve been booting up my iPad and playing with Apple’s latest touch-fueled device. I’ll return with much deeper hands-on impressions of the iPad soon, but here are quick thoughts: The landscape keyboard actually makes writing e-mails feasible, not a pain Moving in and out of applications is so fast it almost lack of multi-tasking irrelevant An iPad is, by far, the coolest way to spend a lazy Sunday on the couch Games are fairly expensive, especially ones based on existing franchises, and rushed The “oooh” moment from non-techies comes from flipping a book’s page with your finger I shouldn’t have woken up at 4am, as the iPad didn’t sell out and I could have slept in Dear Time , no one is going to pay for and download a brand-new Time app every week If you have any other questions, I’ll be watching the comments! Plenty more coverage soon. Have something to share? Sitting on a news tip? E-mail me . You can also follow me on Twitter . Apple – Twitter – IPad – Online Communities – Social Networking

Red Dead Redemption To Receive Massive Promotional Campaign

There are many comparisons to be made between Rockstar Games’ upcoming western title Red Dead Redemption and the developers’ money-printing Grand Theft Auto series. It’s no wonder then that Rockstar plans to throw an unprecedented amount of support behind the game. Rockstar general manager Neil Stephen recently told MCVUK that not only will the developer be “spending a larger proportion of our TV budget pre-launch than we ever have before,” but Red Dead will be the first game Rockstar will promote on the big screen. “We think the cinematic nature of the game makes it a perfect fit for cinema and we will be executing a nationwide ad campaign targeting the audiences of Robin Hood , Iron Man 2 and Prince of Persia .” There will also be movie theatre posters that will somehow let you download game content via Bluetooth, and Rockstar has also made deals with IGN , Gamespot , YouTube, Microsoft and LoveFilm to give away movie downloads and Xbox Live content. Considering Rockstar sees Red Dead Redemption as the official jumping off point for their “next blockbuster gaming franchise,” it’s no wonder they’re throwing so much ad support behind it. Guess we’ll find out if it pays off next month when the game moseys onto store shelves. Source: MCVUK (via Gamasutra ) Red Dead Redemption – Microsoft – Grand Theft Auto – Game – Rockstar Games

Tech Review: Casio EXG1 Digital Camera

Watch Larger Version of this Video Casio proves that digital cameras can be both stylish and rugged, which is why Chris Hardwick and Alison Haislip review the EXG1, which is only 0.8″ thick, waterproof, freeze proof and shock proof. Throw in 12.1 megapixels, and this camera should be perfect for $240. Find out! Find the full review from Gadget Pron on Attack of the Show after the cut. What You Need to Know Even though this camera is rugged, it’s the thinnest camera in our week of point and shoots. It’s only a little thicker than an iPhone. It feels solid. The camera is nice and small, so it’s easy to take anywhere. The buttons seem super small, too. The power and best shot buttons on the top are in-set too much and hard to press. While using the directional pad, you might accidentally hit the center button. On the plus side, there are shortcuts like the playback button turning on the camera and a one-touch movie record button. Its water-proof and drop-proof, but it’s also got dynamic photo mode that lets you put your subject in front of any background. In our extensive testing, it withstood anything we could throw at it. We took it snowboarding (and fell on it), took it to the beach (and lost it in the ocean), and generally beat the hell out of it. Dynamic photo allows you to take a picture of a subject, then cut it out and place it on any background, all on the camera; it doesn’t always work perfectly, but it’s fun. The pictures look surprisingly good. Normal light photos have vibrant colors and look exactly like you want them to, but as you get closer to them, they might be a little pixelated. Low light pictures are only okay; it gets the job done, but it’s more pixelated. Overall, you’ll be taking more pictures outside than inside. Green Day: Rock Band Includes Entire American Idiot Album

Green Day will always hold a special place in my heart because they were the first band I ever saw live in concert (Dookie tour in case you were wondering). So I’ve been a fan for a long time, which, unsurprisingly, means I’m particularly excited about Green Day: Rock Band . And considering what X-Play’s Abbie Heppe found out during her interview with the game’s project lead Chris Foster, I’m more interested than ever. “We wanted to have the entire American Idiot album in the game. It’s like one album that’s meant to be heard and played as one unit. So you have the ability to do that. It’s the first time we’ve shipped any game with a full album involved in it. And it really fits for Green Day, and we’re really excited about it.” More Green Day-themed info awaits in the following video: Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version

THQ Developing A Red Faction Movie

Expanding video game fiction beyond the gaming space has long been a tricky and perilous proposition. (Trying to adapt movie fiction to games has been equally unsuccessful for the most part as well). But recently, the likes of Ubisoft and Electronic Arts have managed to carry over some of their respective properties (Assassin’s Creed and Dead Space/Mass Effect for instance) into other mediums (live-action shorts, comic books, etc.). Fairly soon, it appears that THQ will toss their hat into the “trans-media” ring by taking their Red Faction franchise from the console to the silver screen. THQ core division vice-president Danny Bilson recently told Computer and Videogames that a Red Faction movie is on the horizon, and will tie into the next installment in the series, which is set to be released next year. But don’t misunderstand. These will be two unique projects. “My game is going to get made either way,” Bilson explained, “but what I do is I’m giving these movie guys the opportunity to meet me two or three years at the end with a triple-A, awesome game and a triple-A, awesome movie that compliment each other – and certainly don’t repeat each other – and start to build a world and a fiction and all of that.” Bilson went on to address the lack of quality in the game-movie crossover space, saying “Other companies are, ‘oh, we just license this IP to this studio’ and you never see anything, or at the most you see some bad Mario Bros. movie…We’re going to be doing the most robust trans-media plays anybody’s ever seen in the games business.” Whether THQ can succeed where so many others have failed remains to be seen, but they seem to be on the right track. Plus, Bilson has a long history in film, television and comic books, so that helps.
