Chris Brown To Remain On Supervised Probation

Singer gets positive report from court, but ordered to remain on probation. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Getty Images In a status hearing on Thursday in Los Angeles, a judge said that Chris Brown is doing a good job complying with the terms of his sentence for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009, but that he must remain under the supervision of a probation officer for the time being. According to the Associated Press , Brown was not in court for the hearing where his attorney asked that the singer’s supervised probation end thanks to his good behavior. Superior Court judge George Lomeli, however, agreed with prosecutors, who argued that even with Brown’s good marks to date, he should keep reporting to a probation officer in his home state, Virginia. Brown’s attorney, Mark Geragos, attempted to end the probation, which is part of the sentence Brown received in June 2009 when he agreed to a plea deal
in which he plead guilty to one count of felony assault and was sentenced to 180 days of community labor and five years of probation. Geragos pointed to a probation report that said that Brown had been truthful with officers, passed all required drug tests and “has made great strides” while under probation. To date, Brown has completed half of the six months of roadside cleanup, graffiti removal and other manual labor he was ordered to do under the terms of the deal. But the AP reported that Lomeli didn’t think it was unreasonable for Brown to say under supervision while he finishes the rest of his community service hours. The singer has already completed anger management and domestic violence counseling and a different judge in the case agreed last year to relax a restraining order that barred Brown and Rihanna from contacting each other or getting too close to one another at music industry events. The hearing came just days before Brown and Rihanna are slated to return to the Grammy stage
for the first time since the February 2009 assault. In advance, tongues have already begun wagging, with rumors flying last month that the exes have reunited recently and have been spending time together again. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Is Nicki Minaj A Lock For Best New Artist Grammy?

Femcee seems anything but ‘new’ at this point, but it remains to be seen if her domination translates to Grammy gold come Sunday. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images It’s getting increasingly difficult to think of Nicki Minaj as a new artist. If you judge the Young Money raptress by the time she’s spent in the game, then she is no doubt a newcomer. On the other hand, if you measure the “Super Bass” star by her accomplishments, then she has accumulated enough stats in 14 months to rival some industry veterans. Though it may seem unfair to some that she is even nominated, Nicki’s accelerated artistic growth makes her a heavy favorite in the Best New Artist category at the 54th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. When weighted against other Best New noms like the Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole and Skrillex, Nicki’s path is a unique one. She started out an MC but grew into so much more under the direction of YM head honcho Lil Wayne. When Weezy first discovered Minaj rapping on a street DVD, she was as cocksure and combative as any of her male counterparts, but after signing with Young Money, Nicki used the platform to amplify the natural performance talents that existed within. There were glimpses on her 2009 mixtape Beam Me Up Scotty, but it wasn’t until the Harajuku Barbie dropped her debut, Pink Friday, in November 2010 that her full potential was unleashed, when she displayed her passion for both rapping and singing. Yes, technically her debut album was released in the 2010 calendar year, but the Grammy calendar does leave wiggle room and make her eligible for the Best New Artist nomination. The Queens, New York, rap star didn’t start out the gate as hot as some speculated, but she did snag the #1 album spot on the Billboard charts in her 11th week. In October 2010, Minaj set a record for having the most singles on the Hot 100, notching seven songs at the same time. “Your Love,” “Right Thru Me” and the Drake-featuring “Moment 4 Life” all made significant radio impact, but it was “Super Bass” that proved to be her biggest and most inescapable hit. Nicki, with the help of alter ego Roman, has emerged as a strong visual artist as well through her “Moment 4 Life” video and the super colorful “Super Bass.” The rap rook has also toured with Britney Spears and Lil Wayne. It’s also important to note that Nicki’s prowess in the studio has led her to be a ubiquitous figure in pop culture. She has had a Barbie doll made in her likeness, inked a deal for her own nail polish with OPI, became the face of MAC’s 2012 Viva Glam campaign and has either appeared on the covers or shot for too many glamour magazines to name. Yes, Nicki Minaj does seem to be a lock for Best New Artist, but then again, this is the Grammys and no one ever thought Esperanza Spalding would beat out pop icon Justin Bieber . So maybe the Band Perry have a shot after all. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Spike Lee Crowns The Throne ‘Hottest MCs’

‘For me, it’s Kanye and Jay-Z,’ the filmmaker tells MTV News of his picks for MTV’s ‘Hottest MCs in the Game.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Spike Lee Photo: MTV News Filmmaker Spike Lee is on fire. While out at the Sundance Film Festival in Park city, Utah, in January, Spike showed his latest film, “Red Hook Summer,” and then he and actors Toni Lysaith and Jules Brown discussed a different type of heat: MTV’s upcoming “Hottest MCs in the Game” roundtable debate. At first, Lee tried to dodge the question, deferring to the flick’s young castmembers. “You’re asking the wrong person,” he playfully told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz. Lysaith happily chimed in. The cheery actress who plays Chazz Morningstar quickly ran down a list of rap’s heaviest hitters for her “Hottest” picks. “I personally like Drake and Jay-Z and Kanye West; that’s just me,” she said. “Red Hook Summer” stars Jules Brown, who plays Flik Royale, a 13-year-old boy from Atlanta who moves into a Brooklyn housing project and struggles to adjust to his new surroundings. The new star fittingly looked at the new generation of rappers to top the “Hottest” list. “Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean and Curren$y,” he confidently nominated. Spike, on the other hand, went with some old favorites, two of the game’s most consistent hit makers: the Throne. “For me, it’s Kanye and Jay-Z,” he said, as if there was ever any doubt. Lee is such a fan that he even attended Hov and Yeezy’s final stop on their Watch the Throne Tour in December. “Last Night I Saw Final Show Of U.S. Leg of Watch The Throne Tour at Staples Center in LA.Jay and Kanye Killed It To Death,” he tweeted . Who should be crowned the “Hottest MC in the Game”? Leave your comment below! Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch ” MTV2 Presents: Yo! Tyga Endorses J. Cole In ‘Hottest MC’ Debate

Young Money’s Tyga also puts new rappers Wale, Big Sean and Meek Mill on his ‘Hottest MCs’ list. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Tyga Photo: MTV News Rap veterans Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Eminem have all continued to exercise their hip-hop dominance, but over the past year, a new generation of MCs has made significant impact in the game over the past year. So when Young Money’s Tyga was asked to make a pick for the “Hottest MC in the Game,” he gave a nod to the new class. Of course, the “Rack City” rapper nominated himself for the top spot in MTV’s “Hottest MCs in the Game” debate, but he also opened the conversation up and included some other talented newcomers. “It’s a lot of artists that I like now that are around my age and that are new, from Wale to J. Cole to Big Sean, Meek Mill,” Tyga rattled off when MTV News caught up with him at a shoot for his “Rack City” remix video. Tyga finds that he has more in common with this new crop of artist, as they share a generational bond. “A lot of those artists I can really relate to because we’re close in age and a lot of the stuff they’re talking about is modern day and going on right now,” he said. “I salute all those dudes.” Well, Tyga will have to wait until Monday, when the top 10 “Hottest” countdown begins on MTV News and then tune in to “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” half-hour television special on MTV2 on February 19 when the top five “Hottest MCs in the Game” are revealed. Black Keys’ ‘Gold On The Ceiling’ Video Keeps It Simple

‘Lonely Boy’ follow-up is light on bells and whistles, heavy on what made them the sensation they are today: killer live sets. By James Montgomery The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach in “Gold on the Ceiling” Photo: Warner Bros. There are no dancing actors/security guards , precocious street-fighting children or cameos by “Sir” Todd Bridges in the Black Keys’ new “Gold on the Ceiling” video . But don’t let their absences sway you — in a lot of ways, this was the video the Keys were born to make. The clip, which premiered Monday night (February 6) on MTV, features only the Black Keys (and various members of their road team) doing what they do best: playing live, in gloriously gritty fashion. It’s not only a nod to their roots — for close to a decade, they hammered out gigs (and miles) aboard a rusty van — but it’s a powerful reminder to their detractors that they are, first and foremost, a positively killer live act. Of course, it was also probably a matter of necessity. The Black Keys are rather busy these days, what with their smash album and world tour, so shooting a live video (in part during their MTV Hive-sponsored El Camino release party at New York’s Webster Hall) undoubtedly made their management happy, but you get the feeling that Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney probably delighted in making a concert clip. After all, it fits rather nicely with their anachronistic ways. Of all the monster rock acts currently lumbering, the Black Keys seem the most natural fit for a live video. No bells or whistles, no special effects, just a band, a stage and some grainy footage. It’s easy. So while “Gold” may be lacking in all those things (not to mention odd, inbox-baiting cameos), it is by no means a lesser video. If anything, it represents everything that makes the Black Keys the band they are — hard-charging, unpolished and seemingly not-of-this-era, indebted to their past yet still pushing forward and always determined to do things on their own terms. Big-selling album and high-profile second single be damned, the Black Keys just want to do it live and do it loud. It’s what got them here, after all. What did you think of the Keys’ latest video? Rick Ross And Pharrell Cooking Up ‘A Special Record’

‘He has his own paintbrush and his own colors,’ Neptunes producer tells MTV News, nominating Rozay for ‘Hottest MCs in the Game.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ricky Louis Rick Ross Photo: Getty Images When it comes to MCs, Pharrell has worked with some of the greats. Skateboard P has produced and rhymed with the likes of Jay-Z, Kanye West, T.I. and Snoop Dogg, and for this year’s hottest MC in the game, P has a nomination: ” Rick Ross is on his way, he’s working his way. He’s been doing it for a minute, and he’s been really consistent,” the Neptunes producer told MTV News on Friday in Miami. The debate rages on, and Sunday, February 19, the “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” will premiere on MTV2. During the half-hour special, MTV’s Hottest MCs Hip-Hop Brain Trust will gather at the roundtable and decide the top five rappers in the game. Beginning February 13, MTV will reveal MCs 10 through six online, but only one spitter can snag the #1 spot. If Pharrell has his way, Rozay will conquer all in this highly contested debate. “That guy is an animal; he’s an animal with it. Lyrically, he’s crazy, and he’s just got a very distinct style, it’s his own,” P campaigned. “There were a lot of comparisons made at the beginning of his career, but along with the test of time, he’s proven that he’s his own person and he has his own paintbrush and his own colors.” Skateboard might be just a bit biased as he reveals to MTV News that he and the Bawse have some very exciting things in the works — then again, Pharrell has worked with a number of MCs who could contend for the crown. “He and I have something special too. We have a special record too, but we’re still working,” the multiplatinum producer said. “I’m happy to be a part of it.” Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch “MTV2 Presents: Yo! Jessica Simpson, Huge Boobs Attend Super Bowl

She may not have been dating one of the game’s starting quarterbacks, but Jessica Simpson still made her presence felt at last night’s Super Bowl. The pregnant singer Tweeted a photo of herself and a friend from their box at Lucas Oil Stadium, showing off her ample…. rooting interest in the following Twit pic: Earlier in the week, Jessica had explained her support of the Patriots by saying fiance Eric Johnson was from Boston and: “I’m a Cowboys fan, so I cannot root for the Giants!” Fair enough. But we all know why Simpson is a Cowboys fan , right? Not sure if Johnson would really want to hear that.

Taylor Kitsch’s Super Bowl Ads Needed More Taylor Kitsch

‘Friday Night Lights’ actor, set to break out in ‘John Carter,’ ‘Battleship,’ should have been featured more prominently. By Kevin P. Sullivan Taylor Kitsch in “John Carter” Photo: Walt Disney Pictures Millions of people around the world were introduced to Taylor Kitsch Sunday night. The Canadian actor found himself at the center of two of the Super Bowl’s biggest movie ads for his first two starring roles, in “John Carter” and “Battleship,” but the trailers may not have been the first impression Kitsch was hoping for. Kitsch made a name for himself starring as the misunderstood bad boy Tim Riggins on the beloved but criminally under-watched NBC series “Friday Night Lights.” Riggins grew dear to the show’s viewers because of the charm and likability Kitsch brought to the character, despite a tough exterior. Throughout the show’s run, it was never a stretch to imagine the actor making the crossover to big-budget action movies with his charisma as hard evidence of his bankability. But for his Super Bowl debuts, the studios behind “John Carter” and “Battleship” took the focus off of their star and instead cut special-effects shots together, leaving Kitsch as little more than background noise. The “John Carter” trailer that aired during the game handled its time the most curiously. Beginning with a shot of Kitsch from the film, the footage grew smaller, eventually becoming part of a large collection of footage that formed letters spelling out the title of the film. By the time most of the video appeared on the screen, it was too small to make any sense of it. What many people may not have known was that an extended version of the commercial, one with full-sized footage from the film, appeared online shortly after. That trailer showed off Kitsch during action sequences instead of zooming away from him. The ad for “Battleship” approached promoting a big-budget sci-fi movie in a more traditional way, albeit one that also put Kitsch in the background. The spot played more like a commercial for the other series of movies based on Hasbro toys, “Transformers,” and the scattered nature of it might have left people wondering whether the film stars Kitsch, Liam Neeson or Rihanna . Sure, these are just commercials, but if 2012 is going to be the year that Taylor Kitsch makes the crossover from TV heartthrob to viable action star, studios ought to realize who they’re working with and put the man front and center. Check out everything we’ve got on “John Carter” and “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
