Drake And The Weeknd Work Like ‘Family’

Producer 40 says Drake’s ‘Crew Love’ was ‘an important record for him to make, and the Weeknd was someone that he wanted to include on that.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Steven Roberts The Weeknd and Drake Photo: Getty Images To his fans, the Weeknd is quite mysterious. Though the Toronto singer/songwriter stayed plenty busy putting out three free albums online last year, he has shied away from the spotlight, making very few public appearances and doing only a small number of interviews. While he remains an enigma to fans, to Drake, Noah “40” Shebib and the entire October’s Very Own team, the Weeknd (real name: Abel Tesfaye) is family. “Weeknd is obviously someone very close to us and our family. He’s from Toronto and someone we’ve been associated with and working with for quite some time,” Shebib told MTV News when we visited Toronto in December. “So that’s close to home, that’s easy. He’s in and out of the studio whatever the case is — that’s family.” Weeknd released his first album House of Balloons in March, then its follow-up Thursday in August and then completed the trilogy with Echoes of Silence in December. His music has no doubt caused a stir, and he was most recently tapped to perform at the upcoming Coachella music festival. Two key appearances on Drake’s Take Care also did a lot to raise the Weeknd’s musical profile. His soulful wails drive Drizzy’s pulsating hometown dedication “Crew Love.” Even to the unfamiliar, it’s impossible not to notice Tesfaye’s key contribution. ” ‘Crew Love’ was just a moment for Drake, as far as the content of the record and what was going on around him in his life and his people and his team and how much he cares for them,” 40 explained. “That was just an important record for him to make, and the Weeknd was someone that he wanted to include on that, and that made sense.” On “The Ride,” the Weeknd contributes in a different way, blending his vocals into the background of the track while Drake raps throughout. It’s almost as if the emerging vocalist is an instrument, rather than a guest on the track. ” ‘The Ride’ was really just a vibe, it was a vibe that the Weeknd caught, and it was just so crazy that Drake wanted to rap on it,” Shebib said. “On ‘The Ride,’ he’s definitely an instrument, and he’s singing all through Drake’s vocals.” It is all a great introduction for an artist with a ton of potential, but as for what the Weeknd has planned next, no one really knows. “He’s not interested in playing the game right now,” Shebib said. “He wants to put out his music, and I think when he’s finished putting out his music, he’ll reassess his feelings on the game.” After our interview with 40, the Weeknd released the third mixtape in his trilogy ( Echoes of Silence ), and now we wait to see what’s next. Michelle Obama ‘Is Really Funny,’ Miranda Cosgrove Says

‘iCarly’ star tells MTV News about first lady’s cameo, airing Monday on Nickelodeon. By Jocelyn Vena Jennette McCurdy, Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor and Michelle Obama in “iCarly: iMeet the First Lady” Photo: Lisa Rose/Nickelodeon Miranda Cosgrove is welcoming her biggest and most political guest star to date on Monday’s episode of “iCarly.” The teen star will be joined by first lady Michelle Obama in a very special episode of the series aptly called “iMeet the First Lady.” The episode, which airs at 7:30 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon, will follow Carly as she prepares to welcome her military dad home for his birthday. When he’s unable to come back from his deployment, the First Lady meets with Carly to thank her for her family’s sacrifice and service. Cosgrove said the idea for the episode came courtesy of Mrs. O herself after watching the show with her daughters. “It was one of the most exciting days in the entire time we’ve been filming the series in the last five years,” she said. “Because there was Secret Service everywhere and there’s just so much preparation for her coming and everybody was so excited to meet her. And then she came to the set and she was really down to earth and fun.” Given that Mrs. Obama is such a rookie when it comes to acting, the young Hollywood heavyweight weighed in on the first lady’s skills, giving her two thumbs up. “In real life she’s really funny, so I think that helped a lot because she just has a really good sense of humor,” she said. “So, she has good comic timing.” While the episode is about Carly’s experience in a military family, the episode really pays homage to all the military families out there. “This is really the best thing we could have done because it’s all about celebrating military families, just really letting all these kids know how important their parents are and how great they are for supporting them,” Cosgrove said. In fact, just to show how much support the show has for these families, the cast has been hosting special screenings of the episode at military bases throughout the country. The last will be held Friday (January 13) near Washington, D.C., at Hayfield Secondary School in Alexandria, Virginia. “It’s been really fun going to all the different military bases and meeting all the families and kids,” Cosgrove said. “They’re the first ones who get to see it … The response has been really good.” And at this last screening, Cosgrave will be joined by her super special co-star. “Mrs. Obama is going to be there and we’re going to get to see her again,” she teased. “And maybe we’ll randomly dance.” Are you excited for the presidential episode of “iCarly”? Deniz Koyu Talks Quick Rise Into EDM’s Elite

‘I actually got into dance music quite late,’ German producer tells MTV News. By Adam Stewart Deniz Koyu Photo: MTV News One of dance music’s hottest underground names of 2011 is geared up to be one of dance music’s biggest draws of 2012. For those of you who have not been to a show or listened to a proper comp mix in the past six months, here’s your chance to get acquainted with one of the most talented people in the game, Deniz Koyu . MTV News recently sat down with the German producer while he was on tour with Fedde Le Grand, and even he admits that his ascension to the big league is something he never quite expected. “I actually got into dance music and house music quite late, like 18 or 19,” said Koyu, who recently made MTV News’ list of EDM Rookies to Watch . “Before, I was just into anything, pop music and indie pop also. I was also a huge fan of Daft Punk — maybe this is one of my big influences. Then there was this era with all this disco house stuff, which influenced me as well. Then electro house was big for a short period of time, then it went into progressive house. So yeah, I kind of got influenced by all of this over the past five years.” In that short time, Koyu has turned his personal tastes into thump-tastic tunes with some of the most unique and well-produced tracks you’re likely to find. In fact, less than a month ago, Swedish House Mafia showcased three of his tracks at their highly anticipated Madison Square Garden show , more than any other non-SHM artist in their set. If anything, Koyu’s calling card is his ability to avoid being recognized for any one signature thumbprint or production technique, but rather his uncanny ability to produce

Another Day, Another Racist Politician: Republican Calls Mrs. Obama “Mrs. YoMama”

This is getting old, Republicans. Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal (R-Hutchinson) apologized Thursday for forwarding an email referring to First Lady Michelle Obama as “Mrs. YoMama” and comparing her to the Grinch. The subject line of the email reads “Twins separated at birth?” It includes side-by-side pictures of Michelle Obama and the Grinch with similarly windswept hair. According to the Lawrence Journal-World, the forwarded part of the email reads, “I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing Mrs. YoMama a wonderful, long Hawaii Christmas vacation — at our expense, of course.” O’Neal forwarded the email to House Republicans and added the text, “Sorry, just had to forward the latest holiday message! I’ve had worse hair days but this is pretty funny.” He said Thursday he was sorry to those he offended, adding that he missed the text in the body of the email. He said, however, that the picture “made me laugh.” Earlier his communications director defended him, saying that political cartoons are a “part of American culture.” And the picture in question? Sigh. These clowns. We’ll have to deal with this for another four years after Barack Obama wins the reelection in 2012. It’ll probably only get worse. Source More On Bossip! True Or False??? Technical Foul: NBA Player Charged With Assault After Allegedly Beating Up Female Referee

Hands off the refs. And hands off the ladies! Houston Rockets guard Kyle Lowry has been charged with one count of misdemeanor battery by the Clark County District Attorney’s office in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Las Vegas Justice Court issued a summons for Lowry to appear before it on Feb 2. If convicted, Lowry faces up to six months in the Clark County Detention Center and/or a fine of not more than $1,000. “We have confirmed a criminal complaint charging Kyle Lowry with one count of misdemeanor battery has been filed with the Las Vegas Justice Court,” said Tess Driver, DA’s office spokeswoman, in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. According to the charges, the allegations stem from a basketball game Lowry was playing in between NBA players on Sept. 22, 2011 in Las Vegas. The female victim, Infini Robinson, was one of the referees in the game. The declaration of warrant/summons said, “At the end of the game, Lowry approached the victim and threw a basketball at her striking her in her torso. The victim picked up the basketball and tossed it back at Lowry. Lowry became upset and stated, ‘B****, meet me outside. I will kick you’re a**’.” The warrant goes on to allege that after Lowry walked away, Robinson went to the designated area for officials to change shoes and clothing, and she was hit with a basketball at a high rate of speed. Also according to the warrant, Charlotte Bobcats forward Corey Maggette apologized to Robinson on behalf of Lowry and that Lowry also approached Robinson and said, “I’m sorry. I truly apologize for what I did. I let my emotions get the best of me.” Damn, ballers were acting an a$$ during the lockout. But assaulting referees is just too much. Lowry’s actually been having a decent season with the Rockets so far, and this might derail the whole thing. Oh well, those actions are horrible and he’s gotta pay the price if he did it. Please, no more lockouts. More On Bossip! True Or False???
