Tony Todd On Final Destination, Candyman And Blacks In Horror

Read the original here:

(Originally published August 17, 2011) Tony Todd , the star of Final Destination 5, is on his way to visit his hometown of Washington D.C. on a sunny August morning, and hasn’t a care in the world.  While audiences know Todd for his role in the 1992 cult classic Candyman , he is a classically trained thespian whose roots started in theater.  Born into poverty to a single mother in 1954, Todd first fell into acting as a teenager since–as he puts it– “I wasn’t any good at basketball.” After 22 years in the game, and over 150 acting credits under his belt, Todd has carved out an impressive and enviable career—not bad for a geeky 6’5 teenager from Chocolate City. The Urban Daily chatted with Todd about his return as William Bludworth in the newest Final Destination movie,  his iconic role in Candyman , and the current state of the horror film genre. TUD: Tell us about the plot of Final Destination 5. Tony Todd: We have a new cast of young people with tragic demises and I have more than one scene. I like doing more than one scene, I like continuity (laughs) . There are a few theories going around as to who your character, Bludworth really is—one theory is that he’s death incarnate. What do you say to that? I think that’s too much of an easy choice, I mean how can you be death incarnate when you’re only in the movie for five minutes? Actually someone came up to me and said maybe Bludworth had cheated death himself.  I’ve never personally accepted he was the angel of death, or the emissary of death. Just a very unpopular guy. Why do you think the Final Destination franchise has remained so popular? Because it’s the perfect date movie.  Everybody loves a horror story because it’s a roller coaster ride –you wait for  the slow ride to the top then speed down with all the bumps, twists and turns.  If you’re a smart person, you bring your date and for every bump that goes on, you squeeze a little closer.  I think Final Destination is singularly responsible for more births in America in the last 10 years than any other movie. You might be on to something there. I know I’ve done the research.  I interview people when they leave the theatre, and when they see me they’re like “Oh my God!” That really freaks them out! Final Destination movies are known for their graphic death scenes.  Which ones are the most memorable to you? Well I’m a big fan of the first movie, because that was the template.  Jeffrey Reddick, the creator of  this franchise, is a genius.  In Final Destination 5 , the bridge collapse sequence is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Audiences still remember you from the Candyman movies. Do people still stop you in the street about that role? Candyman is almost 20 years old and not a single day goes by when someone doesn’t stop me in the street.  It was a great role and one of the greatest experiences in my life. Have your kids seen Candyman ? They didn’t watch it until they were well into their teens.  True story—When Candyman first came out, my daughter and I were Christmas shopping, and people were harassing us.  Finally my daughter puts down her shopping bag and said “That’s not Candyman! That’s my dad!” I will never forget that, because that’s when we really bonded. Let’s talk a little about your background.  When you were growing up, which actors or actresses did you look up to or admire? When I was a kid I really loved Humphrey Bogart.  But when I was in theater school, Robert DeNiro was my go-to guy.  I like good actors like Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman.  I grew up a poor kid to a single mom, so as an African-American actor I have a responsibility to hold the mirror up and reflect our stories.  I’m living the dream and also escaped the inevitable. Your first lead role in a movie was in the remake of   Night of The Living Dead . Your character in that movie has historical significance, as the original was the first horror movie to cast an African-American (Duane Jones) in the lead role.  What are you memories about being cast in that project? I actually saw the original while I was studying to be an actor, and watching Duane Jones I thought “Good, there’s hope.”  When I heard they were casting for the remake I ran to the casting office and told them they had to let me audition.  I think they already had someone in mind, but the casting director took a chance on me and gave me the job. It was my first leading role and my son was born around that same time. It was a chance to play a hero, so I was very appreciative. We shot the movie in Washington, Pennsylvania, singularly the most racist place in America.  The beautiful thing is all these people were lining up to play zombies, and if I wasn’t an actor, they wouldn’t have anything to do with me. You also do a lot of voice-over work as well. How did you fall into that? When I was younger, I wanted to do Disney movies but I could never get a role.  When I finally got a part in Transformers 2 I called my daughter and told her “Honey, I’m gonna be a Transformer!”  and she said “Grow up Dad!” But it paid her tuition, so there you go! What are your thoughts on the current state of the horror genre, and should actors of color be more open-minded to doing these types of movies? Television is dying because of the influx of reality shows, so I think smart horror movies like “Final Destination”  area great thing because it makes people think.  I’m not a fan of torture for torture’s sake.  That’s why you’ll never see me in Saw.  I think young African-American filmmakers and actors need to hold their heads up and know if a project is meant for them, they’ll get it. Michael Myers: ‘Halloween’ To MTV’s Killer Halloween

Horror-movie icon ushered in the modern era of slasher films — but is he the best cinematic killer of all time? By Kevin P. Sullivan Michael Myers in “Halloween” Photo: Dimension Films We’re just about halfway through MTV’s Killer Halloween , and the competition is just heating up in the battle to find out which movie murderer tops them all. So far, we’ve profiled Freddy , Jason , Leatherface , Chucky and Ghostface , but now we look at the man who ushered in the modern era of slashers. Which horror-movie baddie has the best personality? Make your pick in our MTV Movies Blog poll! Michael Myers Occupation : Homicidal boy, homicidal adult Weapons : Knife, inability to ever freaking die Archenemy : His family, his psychiatrist, anyone who gets in the way of him killing his family and his psychiatrist Profile : Michael Myers was a bit of a prodigy in the ways of serial killing, changing the game even as a young boy. Pre-teen Michael may have been the first to don a mask — a creepy clown one for his first murder — and go after the babysitter, his sister Judith. He spent the remainder of his youth in an institution for the mentally disturbed under the close observation of Dr. Sam Loomis. After Michael escaped, stealing a mask, jumpsuit and knife from a hardware store, movie serials have never been the same. The target of most of Michael’s deadly attention has been his surviving sister, Laurie, the lead played by Jamie Lee Curtis in the first two films and “Halloween: H20” and Scout Taylor-Compton in the Rob Zombie remakes. The early films simply focused on Michael’s obsession with finding his long-lost baby sister, but later in the series, the true origin of Michael as an embodiment of pure evil added a supernatural element to the villain. There has never been too much to Michael Myers’ tactics. He stalks. He walks. He kills. His style of murder will be remembered for a number of reasons. His mask, an old William Shatner “Star Trek” mask painted white, has become a horror icon. His slow gait and silent disposition directly inspired dozens of imitators — Jason Voorhees, most famously. Modern slasher films owe a debt to Michael Myers and his creator John Carpenter, whose work has affected the genre for generations. Where do you think Michael Myers falls in the scope of horror-movie psychopaths? Let us know in the comments! Mobb Deep Set To Shake Up ‘RapFix Live’!

Tennessee femcee Gangsta Boo will also chop it up with Sway on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on MTV.com. By Nadeska Alexis Mobb Deep Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images Last month, New York titans Mobb Deep exclusively revealed the cover art for their upcoming Black Cocaine EP on our RapFix blog. Now, Havoc and Prodigy are set to swing by MTV’s “RapFix Live” on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET to talk about the November release, which they’ll follow-up with their self-titled ninth studio album. The duo will chop it up with Sway about their latest projects, as well as their catalog of classic albums, including 1995’s The Infamous and 1996’s Hell on Earth. Those records ushered the two Queensbridge, New York, MCs to the forefront of the East Coast’s gritty street rap movement. And judging from the crowd’s reaction at this summer’s Rock the Bells Festival , hits like “Shook Ones II” haven’t lost much steam. But the Infamous Mobb Deep have been busy both in and out of the studio. Last month, Hav and Prodigy inked a new deal with Sony’s RED Distribution to release new projects via their Infamous Records imprint. And Prodigy is now a published author. After the release of 2006’s Blood Money, Prodigy served a stint behind bars , emerging this year with the controversial My Infamous Life: The Autobiography of Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, a book that brought back a flood of memories from the heyday of mid-90s rap. M-O-B-B will share the “RFL” couch with Tennessee rapper Gangsta Boo, perhaps best known for her lyrics on Three Six Mafia’s 2000 album, When the Smoke Clears: Sixty 6, Sixty 1, as well as her own solo projects. In addition to a new feature alongside Eminem on “Throw It Up,” the explosive single from Yelawolf’s Radioactive album, Gangsta Boo is gearing up to release an EP with Drumma Boy in February. Mobb Deep and Gangsta Boo have earned reputations as outspoken MCs in the game, so tune into “RapFix Live” this week to see what they’ll reveal. See the original post:

A few weeks ago Lil Wayne produced a home video “ PSA” that addressed everything from his syrup drinking to his choice in automobiles. 50 Cent’s recent PSA is a little less self-serving. Lil Wayne Says “It Feels F****d-Up” To Be Sober & Speaks On Retiring At 35

Read the original here:

Lil Wayne is certainly confident and effortlessly genius. He has transformed himself from artist to boss of one of the biggest music crews around. Though, on top of his game he plans to retire around the age of 35! In a recent interview with GQ, Wayne talks about being a soccer-dad and how it feels to be sober. On Retiring: Basically, I have been doing this for eighteen years. That’s reason number one. I have accomplished all that I have set out to accomplish and more. Also, I have a label, and I’ve only put out two artists [Drake and Nicki Minaj]. I have a lot more work to do, and it’d be selfish to not focus on being the boss and focus on their projects. But the main reason is my kids, my children. Now, if I thought I’d be selfish to my artists, imagine what I think I would be doing to my kids. I have enough money that they don’t have to ever do anything—which, they will do everything, ’cause they ain’t getting shit. [cackles wildly] Six [more] years, I can do this Lil Wayne thing, and my boys will be about 7 and 8 years old. And man, it’s all about them then. You know, whatever they’re doing. Sports. Whatever they’re into. That’s where I am. I’m at every game. I’m the dad with the hat on. The jersey. That’s me. On Being Sober: I’m good. I ain’t tripping. I’m used to it now. But I was never on heroin or cocaine or Ecstasy or nothing like that. I drank syrup and smoked a lotta weed. I wish I could be back on it. That’s how it fucking feels. [cracking himself up] “How does it feel to be sober?” I’ll be like, “It feels fucked-up.” What you want me to say? “It feels great”? No. I was on something that the doctor prescribed. I was ill, and that was helping me. Click here for the full story at GQ.com

KKK: Authorities Discover Underground White Supremacist Network In San Francisco

“ Racism still exists, they just be concealing it”… in one of the most tolerant cities in the country? Authorities say the number of white supremacist groups in San Francisco is a serious and expanding. Last November, two Mexican nationals were attacked outside a bar in the tTenderloin by a group of white supremacists yelling as they beat one of the men unconscious. Three men were arrested. One of the men, Anthony Weston, testified against the other two. “In exchange for giving us the information about skin heads moving here to San Francisco he was offered a plea bargain,” San Francisco Assistant District Attorney Victor Hwang said. Weston served 10 months in prison. The other two have not been sentenced. But Weston gave investigators information about white supremacist groups in San Francisco. Investigators also found Nazi and white supremacists paraphernalia inside one of the attacker’s apartment. According to San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon, there are three groups operating in the city. “We have probably in excess of 40 to 50 individuals that are documented white supremacists and nearly another 150 or so that are associates that are operating within the city,” Gascon said. The district attorney’s office says they are involved in drug trafficking, identity theft and other crimes. Most of them belonged to a white supremacist group in prison and have moved to San Francisco. Wow, San Fran… Can’t say we’re totally surprised though.
