Is Two Can Play That Game the Original Think Like a Man?

While Think Like A Man may have conquered the domestic box office two weekends in a row – an impressive feat for what Hollywood execs refer to as an “urban comedy” – there’s no question that the film’s success is as much due to the popular self-help book on which it is based as it is to its comedic merits. Roger Ebert hit the nail on the head in his review , remarking: “The movie’s mistake is to take the book seriously. This might have worked as a screwball comedy or a satire, but can you believe for a moment in characters naive enough to actually live their lives following Steve Harvey’s advice?” The funny thing is that the screwball version film Ebert would have liked to see actually exists — and is infinitely superior to the more dramatic, contemporary incarnation. That film is Two Can Play That Game , Mark Brown’s hilarious entry in the battle-of-the-sexes subgenre. A distant descendant of true screwballs (most notably The Awful Truth , which depicts a recently divorced couple’s attempts to derail one another’s new romances), Two Can Play That Game is, like Think Like A Man , anchored by a character explaining dating rules and philosophy to the audience. However, in this film that character actually has skin in the game – in fact, she’s its heroine: Shante Smith (Vivica A. Fox) is an ad agency exec who dispenses advice to the audience (and her girlfriends) about her seemingly perfect “Ten Day Program” for keeping a straying boyfriend in check; when her own boyfriend Keith (Morris Chestnut) begins to stray, a battle of wits ensues. The Kevin Hart comedic-sidekick role is played here by Anthony Anderson, as Keith’s relationship consigliore. Anderson knocks the role out of the park, with a performance that easily steals the entire film. It’s true that the most dramatic moments of Think Like A Man – when the characters try to level with each other and Own Up To Their Mistakes – are the moments in which it feels the most deadened. Two Can Play That Game , alternatively, embraces its absurdity; like its finest performance, it doesn’t take itself too seriously. In one scene, when Anderson seconds the points Keith makes by shouting as if he’s at church, an organ and chorus suddenly appear on the soundtrack to emphasize the revelations the men are coming to about women. The film, at various points, informs us that the first law of thermodynamics explains how best to manipulate your partner; has Vivica A. Fox punch Gabrielle Union in the face; and, in the funniest scene, puts forth the theory that church is a better place to pick up promiscuous women than a nightclub. And while the film understands that it’s a light comedy, it’s not lacking for bombast. “This is way bigger than you,” Anderson tells Chestnut late in the film. “You’re doing this for all men across the country. You’re doing this for men all around the world!” With increasingly deranged anxiety, Anderson goes off the rails: “Pretty soon women are gonna be pulling these head trips on us, dog, and you know what’s gonna happen? We’re gonna be the ones cooking dinner! We’re gonna be the ones changing the diapers! We’re gonna be the ones washing the dishes! And you know what they’re gonna be doing? They’re gonna be sitting on our couches, watching football on our Sunday!” Between putting forth the misguided belief that people need to engage in psychological warfare to keep their partners in line and the propagation of all kinds of stereotypes and clichés, no one’s going to accuse either of these movies of responsibly depicting gender relations. But when choosing one to watch, a viewer is well-advised to pick a film that is fully aware of – and complicit in – its own absurdity. Zachary Wigon is a writer based in New York. Birdman Will Do ‘Whatever It Takes’ To Sign Chief Keef

‘The game needs young blood all the time,’ Birdman tells MTV News of courting the 16-year-old rapper for his Cash Money label. By Nadeska Alexis, with reporting by Sway Calloway Birdman Photo: MTV News Chicago rapper Chief Keef has already built a solid following in the Midwest, but Kanye West gave him a national platform when he decided to remix the 16-year-old’s hit “I’ Don’t Like” for G.O.O.D. Music. Still, a co-sign from ‘Ye is only the beginning, as Keef is now being courted by Birdman and Cash Money Records. On the same night Kanye West tweeted that he would be remixing Keef’s single “I Don’t Like,” the Chi-town rapper tweeted that he was fielding calls from several parties interested in signing him, including Birdman. “Birdman Just Called He Say He Wanna Sign Me Wit #CMB,” he wrote in April. And during Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live,” Birdman revealed that he is, in fact, working on adding Chief Keef to the ever-expanding roster at Cash Money. “I like him, he kinda reminds me of us,” Birdman told host Sway Calloway, referencing his all-star YMCMB team. “[He’s] out the streets, I think he’s swagged up and I’m definitely talking to his people and I’d like to see if we can make it pop, see if I can see if I can get him to be down with the team.” Birdman noted that one of the things he admires about Chief Keef is that he already has his own devoted crew. “That’s what I like, it’s a movement and he’s young, I think the game needs young blood all the time,” he explained. “[We] need youngsters to keep it innovative, because they’re new and creative in their own way. I’m into the young world, that’s my thing. And I’ma do whatever it takes to make it happen.” Kanye West’s “I Don’t Like” remix dropped this week with verses from Chief Keef, Pusha T, Jadakiss and Big Sean. Things are about to get very interesting for the upstart rapper. Do you think Chief Keef would make a good addition to Cash Money? Leave your comment below! LeAnn Rimes in her Bikini after Renewing Her Vows of the Day

Biggest joke in LeAnn Rimes other than being LeAnn Rimes is that she renewed her wedding vows with her husband – because they’ve been married a minute and felt it was time – you know since marriage and the sanctitude of marriage is so important to them – that’s why they both cheated on their last spouses when they found each other….that they can play off as being love at first sight, soul mates or whatever other bullshit they want, when we all know it was all about the fuck….and just cuz you marry the guy you cheated on your husband, who you vowed to be with til death do you part, clearly an empty promise on her part, still makes you a useless fucking whore of a person who happens to have her hard fake titty body in a bikini on this spiritual journey of bullshit love….fuck this cunt like it was married cuz marriage doesn’t matter – even if you double up with the same guy every fucking year until you’re cunt finally does die…while your face still looks 11 with all that freaky botox- you fucking monster or the kangaroos/ICE T in TANK GIRL….. that face is pulled back harder than her clit hood when she’s trying to squirt….I assume she does that…all the religious freaks do…. Speaking of Religious freaks…check this idiot out who says beat the gay out of your kids when they show signs of gay like wearing dresses and playing with dolls…. Playing with dolls as a kid is what led me to playing with stripper and hooker pussy….idiot….this makes me mad…because gay guys are our partners…they teach their female friends how to be slutty…ever see Sex and the City….the shit that inspired all girls to slutty career chicks, written by a homo….that shit is vital to us getting laid by the 27 – 35 year old crowd…….shit may have even inspired LeAnn Rimes, who was married to a gay dancer, to step up her game and homewreck….you see it all comes full circle…the journey that is my brain…. Klown: The Movie Sets a Nude Standard for Raunch [VIDEO]

They show tits on primetime TV in Denmark, so when the Danes want to make an outrageously offensive comedy, they’ve really got to go for the jugular (or the brown eye, as the case may be). As we reported in our Fantastic Fest coverage last fall, Klown: The Movie makes The Hangover look like a Disney flick, and it’s much funnier to boot. Drafthouse Films is bringing Klown to America this summer, so before the planned Danny McBride remake, check out this raunchy red-band trailer featuring one of the most awkward threesome scenes in cinema history. Step up your game, Todd Phillips. The Danes have arrived.

‘The Voice’: Jermaine Paul, Juliet Simms Make The Finals

Tony Lucca and Chris Mann also advance to the final four, while Lindsay Pavao, Katrina Parker, Erin Willett and Jamar Rogers exit. By John Mitchell Christina Aguilera and Lindsay Pavao Photo: NBC The results are in, and the four “Voice” contestants moving on to the finals have been decided. Each artist was assigned two scores, both out of 100, following their performances on Monday night’s show . The first came from their respective judge, while America’s vote determined the other. The contestant from each team with the highest overall score advanced to the finals. With no last-chance performances or saves left in the game, the night’s singing came from last year’s top four: Dia Frampton, Vicci Martinez, Beverly McClellan and winner Javier Colon. Frampton, who repped Team Blake last year, was first to the stage, performing her new single “Don’t Kick the Chair” with Kid Cudi. If anything, the fact that Frampton remains a viable enough recording artist to be performing the lead single from her upcoming record with a major artist like Cudi is a testament to the fact that whether they advance or not, these folks will be just fine. After Frampton’s performance came the night’s first elimination. Aguilera evenly split her 100 points between her two contestants, Chris Mann and Lindsay Pavao, saying the two were so different and performed so strongly that she felt it right to let America decide who should advance. America’s vote was close, but ultimately it was Mann who prevailed, earning a total score of 104 to Pavao’s 96, meaning America’s vote went 54 to 46 in Mann’s favor. Season-one finalist Vicci Martinez performed her new single, “Come Along,” and she got a little hlp from mentor Cee Lo. Next up was Adam, who awarded Tony Lucca 60 points to Katrina Parker’s 40, saying that while Parker is easily the contest’s most improved contestant, he felt that, going into the finals, his connection with Lucca would better serve the rocker on his way to a potential victory. America, it seems, felt the same. Lucca prevailed with an overall score of 108. Parker did snag an impressive 48 points from America’s vote, though her total score of 92 fell short. Team Christina’s season one contestant, rocker Beverly McClellan, hit the stage next to perform “Money Changes Everything” with ’80s pop icon Cyndi Lauper. McClellan, like Frampton, has a new album, Fear Nothing, on the way, reaffirming the sentiment Adam shared with his own team when they were on the chopping block: that all the contestants should take the exposure they’ve gained being on such a popular platform and use it as a launching pad, as both Frampton and McClellan (regardless of the fact that they lost) clearly have. After last year’s winner, Team Adam’s Javier Colon, wowed the crowd with his new single “Drop in the Ocean,” Team Blake hit the ring to find out who would stay and who would go. Like Christina, Blake evenly divided his 100 points between Erin Willett and Jermaine Paul, saying he didn’t want to be part of the decision-making process anymore. (At least he was honest.) However, America went big for Jermaine, giving the former Alicia Keys backup singer a whopping 77 points for a 123 total. By comparison, Willett totaled only 77. The night’s biggest surprise came when Team Cee Lo stepped forward for elimination. Cee Lo chose to go the Adam route, splitting his points 60/40 between rocker Juliet Simms (60), whose performance of “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” earned the most praise of the night from the panel, and Jamar Rogers (40). With his compelling backstory and high-energy performances, Rogers has been a front-runner throughout the competition, but America clearly felt the same as the judges regarding Juliet. She snagged another 61 points from the public vote for a 121 total, besting Rogers’ combined 79. Moving on

Rihanna ‘Weirded Out’ By Her American Accent In ‘Battleship’

Singer says the finished film is of a ‘completely different magnitude’ than what she expected. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Rihanna Photo: MTV News Given the colorful theatrics Rihanna employs in her stage performances, music videos and personal style, it’s difficult to believe that her first-ever movie role is in this summer’s “Battleship” . The Caribbean-born singer admitted that filling her in the Peter Berg-directed film made her nervous in the beginning. “I had trepidation. It was my first film, and I was coming into an environment full of professionals so I had to keep up,” Rihanna said during our “MTV First: Battleship.” “There were also real [military] vets on set, [who were] a part of the film, so you’re definitely [minding] your P’s and Q’s at all times, you don’t want to do anything that was disappointing to their customs.” Being back on the USS Missouri (where they filmed scenes for the movie) for “First” reminded the singer of the nervous energy she had on set. “The butterflies, that nervous feeling I have being here again,” she said. “You’re not comfortable, you have to be alert all the time.” So the big question: What did the singer/actress think when she saw the finished film and her performance for the first time? “I was extremely blown away,” she said. “I hadn’t expected anything like that, because you have to create it in your mind, everyone had their own idea of what it would look like and seeing it back, it was a completely different magnitude. I definitely was weirded out in seeing myself onscreen, and hearing myself speak in an American accent,” she admitted. “It was weird but cool I think.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Voice’ Recap: Tony Lucca Makes His Case For The Finals

Juliet Simms and Jermaine Paul also pull out all the stops for their mentors and America. By John Mitchell Tony Lucca on “The Voice” Photo: NBC With a trip to the finals on the line, Monday night’s (April 30) “Voice” semifinals saw the remaining two artists from each team take the stage to sing their hearts out for America’s votes and high scores from the coaches, which, combined, determine who moves on to next week’s finals. First up was Mouseketeer-turned-rocker Tony Lucca, who ditched his guitar for the first time in the competition to show off a different side of himself, singing “How You Like Me Now.” Lucca upped his game last week with his rocking rendition of Britney Spears’ ” … Baby One More Time” and knew he had a lot to prove. Without his guitar to hide behind, Lucca delivered plenty of pop-star swagger. Blake summed it up most succinctly, saying Lucca’s swinging performance was reminiscent of similarly suited-up Robert Palmer in his prime. Even Christina, who has often been Lucca’s harshest critic, went on and on with praise for so long that host Carson Daly cut her off. (Didn’t he notice her tiara? Who cuts off a pop diva in fishnets and a bejeweled crown?) Erin Willett entered the ring with a “special song choice”: a rearranged take on David Guetta and Usher’s dance thumper “Without You.” It was a risk, but that’s what Erin, who said during rehearsals she felt like she’s “never had a moment” on the show, was after. She was expectedly powerful, earned a thumbs-up from the judges and got very emotional onstage when she finished singing, but we’re not sure everything came together just right to make the performance memorable for the right reasons. Throughout the competition, Christina has pushed classically trained Chris Mann into pop and rock territory to prove — both to himself and the voting public — that he could do more than sing opera (as he did during the blind auditions). However, as the contest winds down, Aguilera was keen to show off what attracted her to Mann in the first place (his perfect voice) and gave the singer one of the most well-known classical songs ever, “Ave Maria.” He nailed it, so much so that Aguilera caught Cee Lo tearing up. Aguilera was so moved by Mann’s performance that she jumped from her chair and joined him onstage to give him a hug. Fan favorite Jamar Rogers from Team Cee Lo was next to the stage with the classic “If You Don’t Know Me by Now.” A born entertainer with a penchant for high-energy performances, Rogers reeled it in this time, hoping to showcase his voice, and the judges took notice. “Forget the competition for a minute,” Adam said. “I’m just a fan of what you do.” Though they are ostensibly competitors, there’s always a good bit of camaraderie among the contestants on “The Voice,” and that showed through when the teams joined forces for group performances of the Killers “All These Things That I’ve Done” (Teams Cee Lo and Adam) and Lady Gaga’s “The Edge of Glory” (Teams Christina and Blake). Similarly, though they may bicker in their judges’ chairs, Christina was bobbing her head (a task given how much that jeweled tiara must weigh) along to Blake’s performance of his new single “Over.” Hoping to show that Mann isn’t the only true powerhouse male vocalist in the competition, Blake paired former Alicia Keys backup singer Jermaine Paul with Journey’s massive ballad “Open Arms.” Jermaine rose to the challenge, digging deep into the song’s emotion and tackling the song’s runs with aplomb. The judges were not shy about praising Paul’s performance. “You came in and you murdered that song,” Christina said. “Jermaine, I would like to congratulate you, because you are no longer a background singer, my friend,” Adam added. But his own coach made the most crucial point, given how close Paul is to the finals, saying, “You’re peaking at the right time.” Katrina Parker also opted to change things up, singing “Killing Me Softly” in the style of the Fugees’ remake. Outside her usual Adele-like belting, she showed off a new vocal personality — more sultry and raspy than ever. Noting that later in the night the judges would be forced to award percentages to the contestants and that Tony Lucca and Adam are maybe a more natural mentoring fit, Christina championed Parker, telling Levine to “take a look at Katrina Parker because she’s a star.” Having saved her from elimination twice in the competition, we think he gets it, Christina. While many singers opted to show off a different side of themselves, being in the bottom two last week chased Lindsay Pavao right back into her hipster-indie wheelhouse, where she found Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” waiting for her. The performance was very Florence and the Machine-lite, with Pavao looking ethereal while strumming a guitar and sounding as unique as ever. Even Blake complimented Christina’s strategy of returning her contestants to their roots (Mann with opera and Pavao with light indie rock). The final contestant to hit the stage was rocker Juliet Simms, singing James Brown’s “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World.” She earned a standing ovation from her coach Cee Lo and fawning praise from the rest of the judges (Adam said she was “the one to beat” tonight), but Aguilera’s words of support — saying that Simms sings for herself and that often leads to the most gut wrenching performances — were perhaps the most important, as she tore the roof off the 2007 Grammys with her take on this song. At the very end of the show, the coaches were given 100 points to divide between their two contestants, the results of which will be tabulated alongside America’s vote and revealed Tuesday to determine who moves on to the finals. Who are your picks for the finals? Let us know in the comments below!
