Adventures in Hunger Games Marketing: Effie Trinket, Style Icon

As The Hunger Games ‘ March 23 release fast approaches, Lionsgate is churning out a steady stream of stills and goodies and tie-ins to stoke the fires of fandom and they’ve put a surprising bit of marketing muscle behind not only star Jennifer Lawrence , but co-star Elizabeth Banks and her supporting character, Effie Trinket. On second thought, maybe that’s not so surprising; Effie’s strikingly gaudy visual look, representative of image-obsessed Capitol culture in the fictional nation of Panem, offers more in the way of marketing opportunities than Katniss Everdeen’s tomboy-turned-teen warrior ensembles. To wit: Effie, as played by Banks, is the face of the official Hunger Games nail polish line , comprised of different shades representing the districts of Panem. (“The odds are never in favor of homely nails,” she preaches on the Hunger Games offshoot site CapitolCouture.pn .) Ironically, Capitol fashions are thought of as ridiculously garish within the Hunger Games world, which explains Banks’s clownish getups as Effie, District 12’s government-assigned escort. The message gets a bit muddled when Lionsgate and its corporate partners sell ” Capitol Couture ” to fans with a positive spin to be coveted and replicated, but fans have a soft spot for Effie and the sentiment suggests more of a cosplay vibe than any legitimate espousal of Capitol culture. (Right?) Anyway, don’t be surprised if you see Effie’s garish styles mimicked IRL sooner or later; Halloween 2012 should be rife with Effie-inspired fan fashions, if the franchise’s enormous popularity is any indication. Here are a few of Effie’s looks to get you started — she never wears the same makeup with more than one outfit, airbrushes on pink foundation, and wears butterfly-adorned falsies, so we obviously already have that in common. Ashanti and Limp Bizkit Next To Sign With Lil Wayne and Birdman?

Excerpt from:

YMCMB ain’t playing NO GAMES! They are definitely going for the gusto by adding stars to their artist roster. They recently signed Busta Rhymes along with Christina Milian, now they maybe adding Ashanti and rock group Limp Bizkit. Peep the BUZZ! “Birdman has made some unique signings in the past, but this one might take the cake. Cash Money Records has added the veteran rock-rap group Limp Bizkit to their star-studded label. Young Money CEO Lil Wayne spilled the beans when he called into New York’s 98.7 Kiss FM on Thursday. “As far as Cash Money, they’re always listening and looking at acts, so honestly, it’s like every other day I hear about somebody new just signed to Cash Money, LB frontman Fred Durst confirmed the signing Friday morning on his Twitter page: “The game is missing danger, electricity, and rock n roll!!!!” Cash Money Limp Bizkit.” Then he followed it with, “Rock sh** doesn’t rock anymore! They say the whole game done went pop so I’m back in this h*! #CMLB.” In addition, R&B songbird Ashanti might join the YMCMB family, as well. “I don’t wanna step across any boundaries, but I think we’re working with Ashanti right now,” Wayne revealed. Ironically, ‘Shanti’s single ‘The Woman You Love’ features recent Cash Money signee Busta Rhymes”. www.popcrush.com

Woody Harrelson Avoids Being ‘Phony Drunk’ In ‘Hunger Games’

But he also didn’t want to actually drink during filming — like he had done before — to play Haymitch. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Woody Harrelson Photo: MTV News Anyone familiar with “The Hunger Games” books knows the character Haymitch Abernathy is mostly memorable for one thing: drunkenness. Sure, his character has a more multifaceted arc over the course of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, but in speaking of the first book and film adaptation, Haymitch’s most recognizable trait is his near-constant intoxication. When MTV News caught up with Woody Harrelson recently, the man who will be bringing the District 12 victor and mentor to life via the big-screen adaptation on March 23, we him how he approached his character’s inebriation. “It’s an intriguing thing for me to play, because it’s not something I’ve had that much opportunity to play,” Harrelson said. “I was a little bit worried about looking phony, that phony drunk thing. Some Method actors might go drunk onscreen; I can’t do that. I tried it one time,” he admitted. “When I was doing ‘Indecent Proposal,’ I had this one scene, and I was supposed to be really drunk, contesting Robert Redford’s love for Demi Moore, and I got smashed because I was supposed to be, so I rationalized it, and that wasn’t a pleasant experience.” Harrelson said he and “Games” director Gary Ross spent time coming up with the right level of inebriation, a point that suited the character but did not completely detract or distract from the story. “There was a thing with me and Gary trying to decide the level of drunkenness in any given scene, and I was always pushing for more drunk, and he didn’t want me to be drunk in every scene,” he said. “He was always pulling back, and I was always pushing for more just because I think it’s kind of funny and interesting. Knowing Gary, he got the right balance.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Hunger Games’ Books ‘Inspiring’ For Wes Bentley

‘I found the character of Katniss to be so intriguing,’ the actor playing Seneca Crane tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Wes Bentley Photo: MTV News We’ve already heard “Hunger Games” star Wes Bentley address the fan fervor surrounding his role as Seneca Crane — or, more specifically, the beard that was specially crafted for his character. Now it’s time to get into his thoughts on the impact of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy as a whole and what he thought about reading them for the first time knowing he might be bringing Crane to life on the big screen. “I think they’re fantastic novels. She’s a great writer, very poetic at times, and I love that,” Bentley told MTV News. “What struck me first was that it was politically sophisticated, a level at which you don’t see in adult novels. I also found it very exciting, and I found the character of Katniss to be so intriguing and so inspiring and very clever. I love to see that in a book.” Speaking to getting into the character of Seneca Crane , Bentley didn’t want to give away too much but did reveal that he felt that he had a lot to work with, thanks to director Gary Ross. “Gary created a great version of the character from the script, and I had a lot of fun with it,” Bentley said. “We had a blast.” The “American Beauty” actor also said he tried to maintain “tunnel vision” with regard to the constant online chatter and debates over the film’s casting, but his wife thwarted those efforts. “I was sort of aware of that excitement about the book,” he said. “My wife was trying to tell me how people felt about me being cast, which seemed positive, but I didn’t want to hear much about it; I just wanted to focus on the work.” Bentley said if he could play any other role in the film, it would be Katniss, because she is such a strong character. He also deftly avoided the Team Peeta or Team Gale question by emphasizing the fact that the story is about survival, not romance. “I don’t even think it plays like that,” he said. “[Katniss] is a strong individual character who is having to do something much bigger. It’s about survival.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Hunger Games’: The Memes That Caught Fire

This week’s Hobnobbing celebrates Seneca Crane’s beard, Peeta’s advice and more Web wonders. By Amy Wilkinson Wes Bentley as Seneca Crane in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Three years can feel like an eternity. That’s how long ” The Hunger Games ” fans will have sat around sharpening their arrows between Lionsgate purchasing the film rights to Suzanne Collins’ novel and the movie ultimately swooping into theaters March 23. But it’s also been a productive 36 or so months for the series’ acolytes, evidenced by the plethora of Panem-centric memes that have cropped up online to amuse, inform and enthrall. From Seneca Crane’s beard to Katniss’ orange backpack, let’s celebrate the things that have made this infernal wait a little less painful. (Special thanks to Twitter friends who sent in their recommendations.) Seneca Crane’s beard Wes Bentley’s flame-shaped fuzz was destined for Internet infamy. Following the debut of “The Hunger Games” full-length trailer, the stylized scruff seemed to be one of the hottest topics of conversation. A Facebook page (and insightful interview with Hollywood Crush ) followed, proving the beard had staying power — even if it didn’t stay on Bentley’s face forever. “I would have loved to have kept the beard, but that beard took two hours to groom every day,” he told MTV News. “It’s such a cool look. Ve Neill, the makeup designer, did such an amazing job. It’s exciting that it’s getting that kind of attention.” Advice Peeta Peeta is the wisest baker’s son we know. Need proof? Take a gander at Advice Peeta , recommended by @TheHobOrg, where the disembodied head of Josh Hutcherson dispenses pithy platitudes and nuggets of wisdom. “Remember who the real enemy is: Panera,” one reads, while another declares, “I set fireeeeeee to the bread.” Aw, Peeta’s an Adele fan! We knew it. Lord Buttercup District 12’s male tribute isn’t the only character pontificating online. Even Prim’s mangy tomcat is getting in on the action. Similarly styled to Advice Peeta, Lord Buttercup , recommended by @mirandahakim, has plenty to say too, like “I am the Mockingjay. LOL JK I’m a cat.” The busy feline also manages his own Twitter account, @LordButtercup. Because the revolution needs social-media-minded mongrels. Effie’s shoes One of the newer (and perhaps less prevalent) memes, recommended by @HGgirlonfire, is a foot fetishist’s best friend. Effie Trinket’s gold booties (supposedly fashioned after an Alexander McQueen design ) made their debut on the recently launched Capitol Couture . And our shoe envy will never be the same. Katniss’ orange backpack Clearly, “Hunger Games” fans are a fashion-conscious bunch, because when the first “Hunger Games” teaser debuted, and it appeared Katniss’ bright backpack had been replaced by a duller version, die-hards were not pleased. Thankfully, further peeks have confirmed that the fiery bag, which Katniss grabs at the beginning of the Games, is indeed a player. And, as recommended by @pikko, it continues to be celebrated on Facebook . What’s your favorite “Hunger Games” meme? Taylor Swift Reveals ‘Hunger Games’ Nods In ‘Safe & Sound’ Video

Just-premiered clip includes plenty of imagery from the best-selling book series to tide fans over until film’s release. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Talking exclusively to MTV News following the premiere of her new video for “Safe & Sound” from “The Hunger Games,” Taylor Swift revealed that the clip contains several references to the best-selling YA book series that fans should recognize. “I felt like I was really needing to pay tribute to this movie and tell this story,” Swift said. “There’s this moment in the music video where I find this mockingjay pin and hold it up.” For those who have not read the books, the mockingjay pin is one of the most iconic symbols from the series. It was given to the main character, Katniss Everdeen (played in the film by Jennifer Lawrence), as a token to take into the arena to remind her of her home district — District 12. The mockingjay and the pin itself are both symbols of rebellion in the books. The mockingjay is a species of bird inadvertently bred when the Capitol released “jabberjays” throughout the nation of Panem in an attempt to spy on its citizens. After the mission failed and the citizens of Panem learned how to feed lies to Capitol spies through the jabberjays, the Capitol ended the project but the birds bred with mockingbirds in the wild, creating the mockingjay, which the Capitol was never able to eradicate. We won’t spoil the rest, but the third book in the series is titled “Mockingjay,” and that isn’t just a reference to the bird or the pin anymore. “Having a music video with that much symbolism in it is something I’m not used to,” Swift continued. “Everyone who is a ‘Hunger Games’ fans knows what it means when there’s fire in the trees and they know what it means for the house to be burnt and they know what it means for the ‘Hunger Games’ pin to be covered in rust and old. Everybody can take their own meaning away from it, but it all goes back to the symbolism of the book.” To avoid spoiling the books and film, the only bit here that we’ll address are the burning trees, which can be seen throughout Swift’s video and briefly in the film’s second trailer. In the arena, the Gamesmakers use fire to keep the tributes from hiding in trees and to push groups of them into the same area so they can fight to the death for all to see. Swift’s “Safe & Sound” video has us psyched for the release of “The Hunger Games,” due March 23. “I’m now sort of like an infomercial for it,” Swift, a fan of the books, joked to MTV News about the series.
