Taylor Swift Reveals ‘Hunger Games’ Nods In ‘Safe & Sound’ Video

Just-premiered clip includes plenty of imagery from the best-selling book series to tide fans over until film’s release. By John Mitchell, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News Talking exclusively to MTV News following the premiere of her new video for “Safe & Sound” from “The Hunger Games,” Taylor Swift revealed that the clip contains several references to the best-selling YA book series that fans should recognize. “I felt like I was really needing to pay tribute to this movie and tell this story,” Swift said. “There’s this moment in the music video where I find this mockingjay pin and hold it up.” For those who have not read the books, the mockingjay pin is one of the most iconic symbols from the series. It was given to the main character, Katniss Everdeen (played in the film by Jennifer Lawrence), as a token to take into the arena to remind her of her home district — District 12. The mockingjay and the pin itself are both symbols of rebellion in the books. The mockingjay is a species of bird inadvertently bred when the Capitol released “jabberjays” throughout the nation of Panem in an attempt to spy on its citizens. After the mission failed and the citizens of Panem learned how to feed lies to Capitol spies through the jabberjays, the Capitol ended the project but the birds bred with mockingbirds in the wild, creating the mockingjay, which the Capitol was never able to eradicate. We won’t spoil the rest, but the third book in the series is titled “Mockingjay,” and that isn’t just a reference to the bird or the pin anymore. “Having a music video with that much symbolism in it is something I’m not used to,” Swift continued. “Everyone who is a ‘Hunger Games’ fans knows what it means when there’s fire in the trees and they know what it means for the house to be burnt and they know what it means for the ‘Hunger Games’ pin to be covered in rust and old. Everybody can take their own meaning away from it, but it all goes back to the symbolism of the book.” To avoid spoiling the books and film, the only bit here that we’ll address are the burning trees, which can be seen throughout Swift’s video and briefly in the film’s second trailer. In the arena, the Gamesmakers use fire to keep the tributes from hiding in trees and to push groups of them into the same area so they can fight to the death for all to see. Swift’s “Safe & Sound” video has us psyched for the release of “The Hunger Games,” due March 23. “I’m now sort of like an infomercial for it,” Swift, a fan of the books, joked to MTV News about the series. Taylor Swift’s ‘Safe & Sound’ Came Together ‘Organically’

‘He created this ethereal sound without making it this big battle anthem,’ Swift says of ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack producer T-Bone Burnett. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Taylor Swift Photo: MTV News On Monday night (February 13), Taylor Swift released a cold, moody video for her Civil Wars-assisted “Hunger Games” soundtrack tune “Safe & Sound.” During her exclusive chat with MTV News following the premiere, she revealed how the eerie song came together in just one day. “I wrote this song with the Civil Wars and [soundtrack producer] T-Bone Burnett, and we all happened to be in the same city on the same day, and I was working with T-Bone a lot on the soundtrack, just putting songs together,” she recalled to Sway during “MTV First: Taylor Swift.” When Burnett suggested the Civil Wars stop by, Swift was enthusiastic about the potential collaboration. “I had this title that I had been working with called ‘Safe & Sound,’ and I just knew that I wanted it to deal with the empathy, sort of the more sensitive side, the bittersweet side of this story,” she said about the sullen track. “Never imagining that this would ever be picked or a single, ’cause it’s a lullaby. This song was such an amazing experience, because it’s like it just happened.” The experience was particularly thrilling for Swift since she’s a big fan of the Grammy-winning Civil Wars. “I’ve been a Civil Wars fan for about a year, and I think they’re amazing, and I’ve always wanted to work with them. They have another song on the soundtrack [‘Kingdom Come’]. I have another song on the soundtrack [‘Eyes Wide Open’], and it just ended up so organically coming together, I can’t believe it, really.” By the time Swift heard the finished product, she couldn’t believe the beauty of Burnett’s sparse production. “We wrote this song and recorded it one day. When we got the track back, I was so surprised by the restraint,” she said. “He created this ethereal sound without making it this big battle anthem.” What did you think of Taylor’s “Safe & Sound” video? Grammys 2012: Who Are The Civil Wars?

The country duo took home two Grammys on Sunday and will be featured on the ‘Hunger Games’ track ‘Safe & Sound.’ By Terri Schwartz Civil Wars perform at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images If you’re a fan of “The Hunger Games” or Taylor Swift , you’ve likely already heard of the country music group the Civil Wars . This year’s Grammy winners for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album collaborated with Swift on the first “Hunger Games” single, “Safe & Sound.” The duo acted as the opening act for Swift as they performed their hit “Barton Hollow.” So who exactly are the Civil Wars? Even though they’re making their mainstream breakout now, the band actually came out of Nashville in 2008. Members Joy Williams and John Paul White reportedly met during a “professional blind date” songwriting session at a music studio that year and immediately hit it off. Before releasing an album or EP, the Civil Wars recorded their performance at Georgia’s music club Eddie’s Attic in 2009 — their second time performing together live — and made it available for free download on the Internet. The set included eight original songs and a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Dance Me to the End of Love.” Video: Watch Highlights From The 2012 Grammy Awards But it wasn’t until later that year that the band started to surface in the public awareness. In November 2009, White and Williams released a digital extended play album called “Poison & Wine.” The title track was featured on “Grey’s Anatomy,” the ABC medical drama that helped further the careers of other folksy artists like Ingrid Michaelson and The Fray. It was then that they caught the attention of Swift. According to the Civil Wars’ website , Swift tweeted her love of the country duo and included “Poison & Wine” on her official iTunes playlist. “I think this is my favorite duet. It’s exquisite,” she said of the song. Fast forward to 2011. The Civil Wars released their first studio album, Barton Hollow, in February, and it reached #12 on the Billboard albums 2011 chart. It certainly helped that the band was also the opening act for Adele’s 2011 North American tour. Later in the year, Williams and White rejoined the Grammy winner on her UK tour and were introduced to the British music scene. The duo — who are only a couple professionally — have a lot to thank Swift for, especially for their collaboration on “Safe & Sound.” Swift will be participating in an MTV First on Monday at 7:54 p.m., when she will debut the music video for the song, and also participate in an exclusive chat with MTV News. Fans can submit their questions for Swift via Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtags #AskTaylor or #MTVFirst. “It was [perfect], strangely enough,” Williams told MTV News of collaborating with Swift and composer T-Bone Burnett. “John Paul and I write all of our own music, so it’s not as common anymore for us to be collaborating with other people. But, T-Bone and Taylor Swift: It was just natural.” The “Hunger Games” soundtrack, which also features Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, drops March 20. The movie hits theaters days later, on March 23. Rihanna Turns Grammy Stage Into A Rave, With Coldplay Assist

Rihanna and Coldplay perform ‘Princess of China’ for the first time on TV. By John Mitchell Rihanna performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Sprawled out on the floor under a red light and accompanied at first by just a piano, Rihanna hit the stage at the 54th Grammy Awards for a dance-heavy take on her massive #1 hit “We Found Love.” The performance kicked off like a scene straight out of the thematically dark video for the track , with the Barbadian pop star leaning against a wall looking troubled under dark lighting with only a piano playing alongside her as she sang the track like a torch ballad. Looking gorgeous — and giving off a Tina Turner vibe — Rihanna rocked the blond locks she introduced recently, wearing a tight, belly-baring ensemble. The laser lights, LED screens and synths kicked up soon enough, though, and Rihanna welcomed dancers to the stage and lit into a high-energy performance of the dance smash that kept with the feel of the song, devolving into a full-on rave, with the pop star front and center. Like many other performers and presenters at the show, Rihanna took a moment to honor the late Whitney Houston , demanding the audience, “Make some noise for Whitney!” Soon, the tempo backed down and the dancers departed, leaving Rihanna onstage with just Chris Martin strumming an acoustic guitar. The pair then started into the televised debut of their Mylo Xyloto collaboration “Princess of China.” “Her bit on our record is my favorite bit. When the song came out, it sort of asked for her to be on it,” Chris Martin told MTV News of the pop princess’ involvement last fall. “And I think at this point, we have nothing to lose, and so we’ve been trying some new things and trying to break down the perceived boundaries between different types of music.” Coldplay finished things up on an upbeat not with their song “Paradise.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off! Taylor Swift Hits Stage With Civil Wars At Grammys

Swift performs her newly Grammy-winning track ‘Mean’ following a performance by her ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack collaborators. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Taylor Swift ‘s opening act for her 2012 Grammy Awards performance was her “Hunger Games” soundtrack collaborators the Civil Wars, who took the stage to perform their track “Barton Hallow.” The duo praised Swift for already winning two prizes for the night, Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance for “Mean.” “It’s our great honor to welcome a two-time winner already tonight, our friend Taylor Swift,” they said before the singer took the stage. Playing a banjo, Swift wore a baggy light-pink dress and her hair done up in a loose braid for her performance of her Grammy-winning song. Her band, also wearing vintage-style clothing, backed her surrounded by abandoned-looking relics like big wooden doors and floorboards that evoked the country twang of the track. Check out photos from the Grammys red carpet 2012. Mid-song, Swift made her way across the stage, keeping the honky-tonk going, as she sassily looked into the camera and sang the Speak Now track. As she wrapped up the performance, she earned a standing ovation, and in true Swift style, she seemed stunned by all the love radiating her way. ‘Twilight’ Vs. ‘Hunger Games’: How Do They Compare?

In ‘Twilight’ Tuesday, Josh Hutcherson says he understands the connection, but ‘the challenges the characters face are very different.’ By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News Disclaimer: This is not a story about warring fanbases, nor is it intended to instigate a fan war. This is about how the smashing success of “The Twilight Saga” has led to Hollywood’s search for another young-adult mega-franchise and the media’s tendency to compare every teen-targeted film to it. “Twilight” is its own magical, mysterious beast, the overwhelming success of which we will very likely not see replicated anytime soon. While there are indeed similarities between the Stephenie Meyer-created behemoth and other successful franchises like “Harry Potter,” they are very, very different. The latest “Twilight”-vs.-X conversation features the highly anticipated “Hunger Games” movie. In my opinion, there are only two comparable elements: They are both based on very popular young-adult novels and feature two romantic interests for the female protagonist. MTV News recently posed the comparison question to “Hunger Games” stars Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence, who both said they understand the link. “I get why people make the connections, because it’s a very popular book, especially amongst young people,” Hutcherson said. “However, I think it’s an entirely different world, and the challenges the characters face are very different.” Those of us who have read both series — and “Potter,” for that matter — likely agree with Hutcherson and know they are completely different stories. As long as the greater population at large can accept and understand these differences, I am completely OK with the many comparisons. Just don’t lump the two together for the sake of convenience. The best thing I’ve seen so far in the “Twilight” and “Hunger Games” comparisons is the fact that Edward Cullen himself, Robert Pattinson, has read “Games” and is just as excited as we are to see the film — in addition to “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” of course. “I sort of came across it last year, and I didn’t realize it was the most enormous thing in the world,” Pattinson told Entertainment Weekly last year. “It’s good! It will be a good movie.” Now if I can just get a slightly out-of-touch colleague to stop harassing me with “But where are the sparkly vampires?” questions every time a new “Hunger Games” trailer or teaser premieres, I’ll feel as though we’ve made some headway on the subject. ‘Hunger Games’ Stars ‘Blown Away’ By The Capitol

But Jennifer Lawrence is less excited about her singing: ‘I am a horrible singer. And I’m an even worse person to be around when I’m singing.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News For our fellow “Hunger Games” fans who obsess over Suzanne Collins’ brilliant books and their upcoming film adaptations as much as we do, there are so many things to love about the story that it’s difficult to pick just one or two (or five) things we’re looking forward to seeing when the movie opens March 23. But two of the most intriguing elements involved in the book-to-movie translation are what the Capitol will look like and how star Jennifer Lawrence will sound singing Rue’s Lullaby. MTV News was lucky enough to get a few hints about those specific topics during our recent chat with Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, both of whom can’t wait to see the Capitol in the finished film but disagree about their excitement for Lawrence’s singing skills. “[I’m excited to see] everything in the Capitol,” Lawrence said. “Every time we showed up at a Capitol scene, I was so blown away. Everything was more than you could have even imagined.” “What was cool about the stuff in the Capitol, so much was practical,” Hutcherson added. “The whole apartment scene was all a set they built that was super, incredibly futuristic and amazing, and to see how that is integrated with the whole green-screen world as well is going to be really, really cool.” Lawrence was not quite as enthusiastic about hearing her voice in the film, however. When we brought up the subject, she seemed to immediately get nervous about it. “Oh God, oh God. Yeah, I did [sing],” she said when asked about recording “Rue’s Lullaby.” “I’m a terrible singer.” “She’s not,” Hutcherson said. “No, Josh! Stop,” Lawrence said to Hutcherson with sincerity. “He is messing with everyone.” “She’s been called the songbird of her generation,” Hutcherson jumped in with a smile, referencing a Will Ferrell line in “Step Brothers.” “My voice is a combination of Fergie and Jesus,” Lawrence played along. “No, I am a horrible singer. And I’m an even worse person to be around when I’m singing. I’m a terrible singer. I hated it.” Lawrence said the recording process with famed producer T-Bone Burnett was particularly excruciating. “T-Bone Burnett, like, the best person to ever happen to music is, like, listening in the other room. I kept getting ready, and then the music would play, and I’d [freak out],” she recalled. “Nothing would come out of my mouth.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
