D-day 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa

South Africa’s World Cup flows over In one of the largest displays of national spirit ever seen in the country, South Africans took to the streets at midday on Wednesday in a massive display of support for the home team as a proud nation let the world know just what kind of tournament Africa’s first World Cup will be. Around Johannesburg the crowds were there to welcome the national side, Bafana Bafana, who were travelling in an open-top bus, at every turn they made on their way from their hotel in Sandton to their training ground at Wits University. In Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and the other host cities, the atmosphere was no less electric as World Cup fever spread quickly, signalled by the distinct drone of the vuvuzela. Celebrating the spirit of the nation “I’m here to support Bafana Bafana and to get behind my country,” said Johannesburg resident Zeyn Tilly. “It feels amazing to be here, it is the first time in my life I have seen this unity in South Africa. The atmosphere is just electric.” For Tilly, this is the start of a fun-filled six weeks. “You can have no idea how incredible this is for me. I just want it to go as slow as possible so that I can enjoy every minute. This tournament is about more than just football.” For Joseph Mabea, Wednesday’s street parade was about celebrating the spirit of the country. “I am a huge Bafana fan,” Mabea said over the din of the vuvuzelas. “I have seen the passion in them, and I want them to know I am with them all the way.” Mabea has a ticket for the opening match, and the atmosphere of the parade is only getting him more excited. “I will be there, and I can’t wait. Seeing such a match live, no longer on the television, is amazing for me. The feeling here is amazing, I am running short of words. I wish this could happen more often, I wish this could be my life, showing how united we are as a nation.” Support for the national side has been growing in recent weeks, both as a result of the proximity of the tournament and due to their recent performances on the pitch. “This is a great team,” said another Joburger, Muhammed Moosa. “Twelve unbeaten games – they are just great, and they will do us proud.” Many businesses allowed their staff to come and join the party in the streets, adding a huge number of people to the midday festivities. ‘Thank you, Bafana, for making us one’ Laughing with friends as she tried to blow her vuvuzela, Leanne Toffie said she wanted to show her passion for her national side. “To be here, united with my fellow South Africans in support of Bafana Bafana – it is just an amazing feeling, seeing the country united as one.” Nicholas Ndlovu, fully clad in a Bafana Bafana supporters’ uniform complete with makarapa, vuvuzela, overalls and glasses, said: “It feels like I am in heaven coming into a crowd of people like this, it makes me so proud. Thank you, Bafana, for making us one.” Many tourists are in Cape Town for the World Cup, and it did not take long for them to get in on the act and also try and blow a vuvuzela. Pablo Ezeqiel Perez Murua from Argentina and his family are staying at a guest house in Plattekloof. They came to explore Cape Town for the day, and were pleasantly surprised at the outburst of patriotism. “Cape Town is a wonderful city, the people are friendly and very patriotic,” Murua said. “I have also bought a trumpet [vuvuzela] and will blow it at our first game against Korea. Deon Malan, who happened upon the scenes of celebration while walking through the city on his way to meet friends at a restaurant, said: “Walking down Long Street [in Cape Town] was incredible. People were standing on balconies overlooking the street while outside people were congregating in groups blowing their vuvuzelas. “It was the first time that I can really remember seeing all South Africans united in such a way,” said Malan. “It was so overwhelming.” Source: 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Organising Committee 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans

PHOTO: SIMON MATHEBULA All our host cities and their stadiums are ready. Fan transport and fan parks are prepared and ready for the big day. Bafana Bafana has been scoring goals and today the games begin. Bafana has had 12 consecutive wins. More than 500million people in the world are going to bring their attention to South Africa and we will not disappoint. Today Bafana Bafana takes on Mexico in the month-long tournament. Local Organising Committee chief executive Danny Jordaan yesterday said today “is going to be an incredible day”. “South Africans are late believers but once they believe, they are fanatical believers. Of course our team has increased our ability to believe,” he said. He likened the run-up to the 2010 Soccer World Cup to the struggle against apartheid, joking that his next career move might be to the post office. “Then the prison doors opened and he (Mandela) walked out … and we thought, what are we going to do next? I think I will look for a smaller job now … like a job in the post office. I think I’ve seen enough struggle.” Jordaan said during the country’s key historic moments the rest of the world – and some South Africans – always seemed to expect the worst of South Africa. “You see the headlines: “Race war’, ‘Bloodshed’, ‘Chaos’, ‘Plan B’, ‘Don’t do it’, ‘It’s not going to happen’,” Jordaan said. The recent successes of Bafana Bafana, whose tour on a party bus to Sandton in Johannesburg on Wednesday drew tens of thousands of fans on to the streets, played a big role in South Africa’s new-found optimism. “Of course our team has increased our ability to believe,” said Jordaan, referring to the 12 consecutive wins. To top the journey off, he said, he really would like to see Nelson Mandela at Soccer City during the opening this afternoon. “Nelson Mandela is 92 years old … he himself wants to be there. Whether he stays five minutes or the whole match is really not our decision. “As things stand now, there is a very, very great chance that, in fact, he’ll be there because he wants to be there. How long he will stay, that is really his decision. But we’ll just be happy if he shows his face,” Jordaan said. He said that Mandela had been the symbol of unity for a democratic South Africa, whose citizens saw racial barriers being torn down in the run-up to the Cup, especially when the Blue Bulls rugby team trekked to Soweto for the Super 14 finals . “ Today was set to become a pivotal day in South Africa and Africa’s history . It is a psychological barrier that has been crossed … it’s an assertion of who we are as Africans and what we can deliver.” Source – Sowetan.com 2010 World Cup Blog for the Fans

Shakira, Bono, R. Kelly, Russell Brand Score With World Cup Anthems

Skakira’s official FIFA World Cup song ‘Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)’ has much company among 2010 soccer anthems. By Gil Kaufman Shakira kicks off the 2010 World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday Photo: Michelly Rall/Getty Images It’s hard enough to get Americans pumped up to watch a bunch of other country’s teams play soccer, but one thing we can all agree on is that the crazy-quilt Pangaea of World Cup anthems is an amazing spectacle to behold. From Shakira’s Official FIFA World Cup song “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” to Russell Brand and Robbie Williams’ remake of England’s unofficial soccer song, “Three Lions,” there are a head-spinning array of choices when it comes to soccer soundtracks for the planet’s biggest sporting event. Colombian hip-swiveler Shakira teamed up with South Africa’s Freshlyground for the tournament’s official song. The propulsive Afro-techno “Waka Waka” has the perfect mix of inspirational lyrics — “The pressure’s on, you feel it/ It’s time for Africa, your time to shine” — and a raise-the-roof vibe that you can picture pumping out of stereos from Johannesburg to Pittsburgh. No slouch in the inspiration department, Mr. “I Believe I Can Fly” himself, R. Kelly, also cooked up an official FIFA World Cup anthem with a little ditty he calls “Sign of a Victory.” The collabo with the Soweto Spiritual Singers choir — who will perform the song with Kelly at Friday’s opening ceremonies — bubbles along on a syncopated, African percussion beat while Kelly sings, “I can feel the spirit of the nation/ And I can feel my wings riding the wind.” The choir backs him up with an uplifting, wordless chant under the chorus “That’s the sign of a victory.” He also manages to incorporate the phrases, “let the games begin,” “we can achieve anything, including the impossible,” “raise the flag” and “scream like you want to win.” Somalian/Canadian rapper K’Naan also went the inspirational route with his official Coca-Cola anthem, “Wavin’ Flag,” which has the rising-up-from-oppression vibe of a classic Bob Marley tune. With assists from Will.I.Am and David Guetta, the soaring tune camouflages a song about poverty and oppression in a heart-stirring call to arms to let your banner fly. Pepsi wasn’t about to get aced out of this action, so it recruited Akon and Keri Hilson to make a video with soccer stars Lionel Messi of Argentina and Ivory Coast’s Didier Drogba called “Oh Africa,” as part of the celebration of the continent’s first hosting duty for the global event. It also has the obligatory South African township jive stomp, and like the other songs, is as much about Africa’s spot in the sun as it is about sports. And because there’s probably some rule about Bono having to participate in any globally unifying event, the U2 singer hooked up with Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and John Legend for a thumping, Afro-pop cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up.” Another cover that was recorded as an unofficial English World Cup anthem is a banging remake of Tears for Fears’ “Shout” called “Shout for England,” laid down by U.K. rapper Dizzee Rascal and actor James Corden at the behest of former “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell. It has a thundering chorus that adds a thick acid-house beat to the original tune as Rascal spits lyrics to inspire England’s soccer stars to victory. For no apparent reason, New York’s We Are Scientists have also offered up a song for England’s club, the appropriately named, “Goal! England,” a slice of T. Rex-inspired garage rock thunder that features the unforgettable lines, “Kicking the kicking the kicking the kicking the ball/ Kicking it into the goal/ Go, go, go, go go … England!” Then there is the official FIFA Mascot song from Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, who hooked up with South African group TKZee and England’s Dario G to let the dogs out for the high NRG club banger “Game On.” Taking things a little less seriously is U.K. legend Robbie Williams, who formed “The Squad” with comedians Russell Brand, Daniel Baddiel and Frank Skinner to record a remake of England’s unofficial soccer song, “Three Lions.” The mash of opera, a soaring choir singing, “It’s coming home/ Football’s coming home,” a bouncy, Madness-like ska pop vibe and self-deprecating soccer-centric lyrics about England’s chances of regaining football glory make for a lovably comic mess. Among the other acts on the FIFA-sanctioned soundtrack to the international soccer showdown, Listen Up!: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album , are: Nneka (“Viva Africa”), Matisyahu featuring Nameless (“One Day”), Wyclef Jean, J Pre, Jazmine Sullivan and B. Howard (“Ke Nako”), and late South African opera singer Siphiwo Ntshebe (known as the “black Pavarotti”) featuring former South African president Nelson Mandela (“Hope”). And of course, if none of these tunes provide the right kick, there’s always the unofficial World Cup Song contest , with nearly 400 entries. The top five is currently dominated by England, with Christian singer Gerry Asmus’ “It’s Our Game,” a flowery pop piffle about King George and English pride, holding down the top spot at press time. Green Day Talk Getting Their Own ‘Rock Band’

‘I think it might have inspired people to get real guitars and real drums,’ Billie Joe Armstrong says of the video game’s appeal. By James Montgomery Green Day might not be the first band that comes to mind when you think “video games” (although in their early years, they did have a Sega Genesis on their “Book Mobile” tour bus). So with the release of the new, ultra-deluxe “Green Day: Rock Band” right around the corner, we asked the guys just why they decided to partner up with MTV Games for the project. And, as is the case with many things involving the band, the answer was a combination of both high-minded idealism, and, well, low-brow, decidedly boozy realism. “When I’ve seen ‘Rock Band,’ what I’ve noticed is that there’s a lot of old songs and different kinds of songs by different bands that kids are picking up on,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explained. “And that’s what I thought was so cool about it … [‘Rock Band’ is] its own radio station in a way. But, you know, you’re sort of involved with it. And though you’re playing plastic guitars, I think it might even have inspired some people to actually go out and, you know, get real guitars and real drums and start to figure it out on their own, you know?” “The first time I ever saw ‘Rock Band,’ uh, it was like in a pub in California and they had a TV and they had the game set up in a little corner,” drummer Tr

Consequence Says Kanye West And Q-Tip Bring Him To A ‘Higher Level’

MC hopes to drop a single soon from Cons TV, co-produced by the two hip-hop heavyweights. By Shaheem Reid Kanye West and Consequence Photo: MTV News G.O.O.D. Music artist Consequence says he has another single coming soon. This one will be off his Cons TV album, tentatively slated for summer. “We have one or two joints me and Q-Tip gotta tweak, and we should be putting out the first joint very soon,” he said. “Before Memorial Day, we should have the next single.” Cons’ album is being produced by the unstoppable beat combination of Kanye West and Q-Tip . With his label CEO and legendary cousin on the boards, Consequence knows there is zero margin for error. “You gotta work,” he said. “You gotta work even harder, because the expectations of what the records should come out to be are on a higher level now than when you’re working with upstart producers. [Working with a] Joe Schmo, there’s no expectations. They haven’t established a lineage, they haven’t established a track record for greatness. When you have Grammy winners and hip-hop legends doing your record, the records have to be at an unequivocal high. You have to rise to the occasion of what the project is. If you don’t, they are still going to be who they are, which is great pressure. You just gotta hit a jumper in somebody’s face. You can’t settle for the two; you gotta hit the three when the buzzer is about to go off.” The Queens native said he kept his recording within the familiar confines of the Big Apple rather than going to Hawaii, where Kanye has been recording and producing for various other artists. “Everything I did for my record was done in New York. Me and Kanye worked out here for my record, and me and Q-Tip are finishing up here as well,” he explained. Consequence has the mixtape Movies on Demand out right now. The project features the single “Childish Games” which guest star Asher Roth. Do you think Consequence will make Kanye and Tip proud? Let us know in the comments!
