Nicki Minaj Calls VMA Pre-Show Set ‘An Amazing Look’

‘As an underground female rapper, that’s the biggest accomplishment so far,’ she tells MTV News. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Tim Kash Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News People are still talking about Nicki Minaj’s colorful performance at the VMA pre-show with special guest Will.I.Am, and she recognizes what a big milestone it was in her young career. “That was an amazing look,” Nicki told MTV News right after the main show Sunday night. “I’m so thankful to have that opportunity. As an underground female rapper, that’s the biggest accomplishment so far.” Nicki also threw kudos to her Young Money family member (and Twitter ex-husband ) Drake. “Our divorce isn’t finalized yet,” Nicki joked before assessing Drake’s performance of “Fancy” with Mary J. Blige and Swizz Beatz. “No, he was amazing. He’s always spot-on. I thought Mary sounded like honey. Honey! Amazing. And, of course, my baby Swizz Beatz was up there. I loved it.” The day after the show, Nicki was back in her hometown of New York performing as part of the Jay-Z and Eminem’s Home and Home concert series . Minaj came out with Jiggaman and Kanye West for “Monster.” “I’ve just been blessed to be on a song with two living legends,” Nicki told DJ Drama recently on his Gangsta Grillz radio program. “In my book, Jay and Kanye are icons, and I never in a billion years would have thought I would be on a song with one of them, let alone both of them. I’m happy people think I murdered the record. It just feels exciting to be a part of that collab. Seriously.” Minaj’s VMA pre-show performance won over some new fans as well as her peers. “I think Nicki Minaj is the truth,” Katy Perry said of Minaj . “I think she is amazing, and I love her sense of style. I love her beautiful figure. It’s hot.” “What I love about Nicki is she has the eye of the tiger and she is fearless,” Minaj choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson said. “These are the components that I saw about three years ago in Lady Gaga. I thought, ‘This is going to be fantastic.’ Her swag is amazing.” What did you think of Nicki’s VMA pre-show performance? Let us know in the comments! Chris Brown, Tyga Planning Fan Of A Fan Tour

Tyga explains success of ‘Deuces’ to Mixtape Daily : ‘The people chose the record.’ By Shaheem Reid Chris Brown and Tyga Photo: Courtesy of Young Money The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Chris Brown is in the #1 film in the country, “Takers,” and now that he’s done with Hollywood (for now), he’s going back to the lab. “Me, I’m definitely writing on other people’s projects. A lot of in-house stuff,” Brown said recently in L.A. “I got a lot of artists coming out. The single ‘Deuces’ features one of my artists K-Mac and Tyga [from Young Money]. I’m pushing forward. The movie’s out, so I’mma have fun.” “Deuces” is in the top 30 of Billboard ‘s Hot 100 charts and #1 on urban radio. The record’s success is simply due to fan support. It’s part of Brown and Tyga’s Fan of a Fan mixtape and skyrocketed once the video hit virally and on MTV Jams. “That was actually Chris’ idea,” Tyga told us about putting out a visual for the song. “I thought the record was dope. I thought it was dope for us to do that video. He got to explain his situation. It connects to his fans. His fans miss that from him. “I think the people chose the record,” Tyga added. “We put the mixtape out, and we asked them: What record do you like the most? They was like, ‘Deuces.’ It was always coming up. It was growing on YouTube as well, like 100,000 views a day on YouTube. It was his idea to shoot the video. My homie Colin Tilly, he’s done all my videos. He’s done everything. All my mixtape stuff to the bigger stuff I’m doing now. He got it right. It’s what people wanna see, what they wanna hear.” Despite the overwhelming success of Fan of a Fan, Tyga said he and Chris aren’t planning an official LP, but they are hitting the road together. “I don’t think you wanna drown people too much,” Tyga said about making a full album with Brown. “We’ve been doing a lot of stuff, though. He’s on my album. We’re actually working on a tour right now. A Fan of Fan Tour at the end of the year. It’ll be dope.” Tyga has an album coming out soon; it doesn’t have a release date yet. But his next mixtape, Well Done, will hit within the next couple of weeks. It’s going to be a Gangsta Grillz edition. “I feel like I had to deal with [DJ] Drama. He reminded of Wayne, when he did Dedication with him,” Tyga explained. “[Wayne] was going in on every beat. All the mixtapes I’ve been dropping, they’re close to albums. They’re more songs. They have more content. This one, I wanted to rap on everybody’s beat and murder every beat that’s out. It’s fun to do that. It’s easy. I can knock that out real fast. I think Drama is dope when you wanna link up and murder beats like that.” Some of the tracks Tyga is pilfering are Soulja Boy’s “Pretty Boy Swag” and Nicki Minaj’s “Your Love.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Is ‘Sex And The City 3’ On The Way? Kim Cattrall Weighs In

‘I think there’s more stories to be told,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kim Cattrall Photo: MTV News The second “Sex and the City” movie hasn’t even hit theaters yet, but that doesn’t mean fans aren’t wondering if the girls will get together for a third flick. Kim Cattrall said the only person who can decide the fate of the franchise is writer/director Michael Patrick King, and if he wants her to come back again to play man-crazy PR maven Samantha Jones, she’s there in an instant — as long as she doesn’t have to come up with the story line. “That’s totally not up to me, thank God! Thank God I don’t have to write that third script,” she told MTV News while promoting “Sex and the City 2,” which hits theaters Thursday. “That would be so daunting, but that’s up to Michael.” While the decision isn’t hers, she certainly is rooting for there to be another flick. “I don’t know if there will be a third,” she said. “I hope there will be. I think there’s more stories to be told. That’s totally his call.” So when will they stop? “Well, I think the only way it will continue is if Michael feels there’s more to be said. I think once we start repeating ourselves, it’s time to say goodbye,” she said. “Maybe that’s in five years, maybe that’s in 10. Who knows? I hope we can do it for as long as the audience is there and the characters are interesting and growing and changing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Sex and the City 2.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Pill Preps First Gangsta Grillz Tape, Holds Off On Debut

‘I don’t want to rush it,’ the Atlanta MC tells Mixtape Daily of taking his time on The Medicine. By Steven Roberts and Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Pill Photo: Atlantic The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Pill is going for the trifecta next week. The rapper burst onto the scene last year thanks to his frantically-paced anthem “Trap Going Ham.” Since then, he’s released two “pharmaceutical”-themed mixtapes, 4180: The Prescription with DJ Burn One and 4175: The Refill with DJ Skee. Now, Pill is upping his prescription when he drops his first Gangsta Grillz mixtape with DJ Drama, 1140: The Overdose, on June 1. “Me and DJ Drama, it will be a Gangsta Grillz. Get that on your mind right!” Pill told Mixtape Daily. ” 1140: The Overdose. I got few features, but I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag just yet. You could look for it to be along the same lines of The Prescription or The Refill. I just try to keep it going the way I usually do it. I don’t want to switch it up, because I made it this far doing what I do, so I’m going to keep doing what I do.” Pill’s previous tapes have mixed original material with jacked beats from a wide array of artists like Destiny’s Child and the Notorious B.I.G. The Overdose continues in that tradition: Freestyles over Ludacris’ “How Low” and T.I.’s “I’m Back” have already leaked to the Web. His tapes have helped Pill win a spot on XXL ‘s 2010 Freshmen 10 . Despite his quick rise, Pill said he won’t rush his aptly titled debut album, The Medicine. “I don’t want to rush it, because you know how a lot of people get signed and they drop an album ASAP, and nobody knows who they really are? I don’t want to fall victim to that,” he said. “[I’ll] probably drop another two mixtapes and then be looking forward to the album. I don’t want to drop it on them. I want them to be like, ‘We need that Pill album,’ so I can give them The Medicine. ” Other Heat This Week

Jadakiss’ The Champ Is Here 3: Check Out A Preview!

‘Kiss teamed up with DJs Drama and Green Lantern for this Mayweather-Mosley-themed mixtape — a Mixtape Daily special! By Shaheem Reid with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Jadakiss Photo: MTV News No matter what happens in the big Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. “Sugar” Shane Mosley bout on Saturday, it’ll have a hard time topping the excitement on the new Champ Is Here 3 mixtape by Jadakiss and DJs Drama and Green Lantern. ‘Kiss is already legendary, but the lines on this one are as immaculate as ever. “The game is all Jada’s/ Something hot drop, I get ’em in all flavors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals,” he spits. “He’s a di–, you a p—y, y’all neighbors/ The Black Mamba of the vocals/ MJ of the Pro-Tools, anti-social.” We don’t need to say much more than that! Our money is Money May and of course ‘Kiss. Shout to DJ Drama and Green Lantern who hosted this one on the tag team. It’s a “Gangsta Grillz Invasion.” This Week’s Main Pick Street Kings : Jadakiss, Green Lantern and DJ Drama Holding It Down For : Legendary hip-hop Mixtape Album : The Champ Is Here 3 Real Spit : As promised, the biggest event in hip-hop right now is here: Jadakiss’ Gangsta Grillz Invasion, The Champ Is Here 3. ‘Kiss’ collabo with Green Lantern and DJ Drama has been strategically planned to drop on the same day that Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley are getting it on in the ring: tomorrow, May 1. This time around, though, Jada isn’t pushing an album (at press time he was only three or four songs deep into his next LP, Top Five, Dead or Alive ). “The regular formula for the first two was drop the mixtape right when I finished the album,” Jada added. “I just shifted it on you this time: Give you the mixtape then go finish the album. Let you compare it with the albums that’s coming out while I’m in the kitchen.” Kiss’ mixtapes have been so dope, he’s often found himself competing with himself. “That’s another reason why it’s good to drop it before, so I won’t have that problem,” Jada laughed. “It’ll just be creating pandemonium everywhere instead of competing with my own album. It might be better to do it this way. We gonna keep switching it around. We might do another one this way, but we gonna switch the pattern up so they can’t follow.” Guests on the tape include Yo Gotti and Nicki Minaj — and that’s just to start it off. “We got some underground artists, some high-class artists, some of them good, down-bottom artists. It takes you all around. You definitely gonna rock out for Memorial Day, for the summer.” “There’s some surprises on this joint, even with just his features,” Lantern continued. “We never had features outside of the Lox. But we have some nice surprises.” Green and Jada have been rocking on this series since the start. They called Drama into the fold for the third. “I got the phone call one day. Green been in [Atlanta] recently, invading the airwaves, invading the city,” Drama told of his participation. “We been looking for a project to do for a couple years now. Green called and said, ‘We making the mixtape game exiting again. It’s fun. We’re moving around brands. What do you think about coming on board for this Champ Is Here 3 ? It made perfect sense. I been on my New York sh– heavy. Green is in the A, ‘Kiss being the legend he is — three very important and crucial brands in hip-hop. Stupid!” Joints To Check For : “Bang” “You know what I’m spitting already,” Jada laughed. “That’s self-explanatory. The content is just fight dialogue, workout dialogue, getting ready for the fight. What I’ll do to you before or after the fight.” “Here I Go” (featuring Yo Gotti) “Yo Gotti is poppin,” Jada said. “He’s been doing his thing for a while in the South. I feel he’s an underdog like me. He do his thing but he don’t get the props he should get. Those are the people I rock with the hardest. He don’t care, he knows what he’s doing despite what anybody might think. I respect him for that.” “It’s a problem man,” Dram concurs. “We wanted to give them something they wasn’t expecting and haven’t heard. The beat on ‘Here I Go,’ it felt right. Mystikal is home. We used his beat.” “Who Shot Ya?” “Rest in peace B.I.G. Big shout to Nasheem,” Kiss — who rapped over Biggie’s classic track, said. “You can’t really play with that. I took shots at y’all [the MTV Hip-Hop Brain Trust] on there … Not really, just getting y’all back. Big up to them [ “Hottest MCs in the Game” ] lists. I don’t let them lists discourage me because the people who make the list, the people who’s on the lists, [watch out for my] new album, Top Five, Dead or Alive. ” “Listen,” Green adds. “I heard it for the first time a couple of days ago. I had to stop for a minute. This is special. You just can’t go regular on that beat, so I just stopped. I had to take a minute and really concentrate on that one. He came off. He wrapped it up. Blood on the floor at the end of that one!” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Will New Def Jam Exec Sha Money XL Bring The G-Unit To The Label?

‘I would like to provide an opportunity for them to continue to grow,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with reporting by Sway Calloway Sha Money XL Photo: MTV News Executive Decisions: Sha Money XL Queens is in the building — again. Sha Money XL has signed on to become the senior VP of A&R at Def Jam Records. The label has had such a rich history of Queens-bred fellas in the boardroom, from its founder Russell Simmons to Irv Gotti to one of Sha’s mentors, the late Jam Master Jay. XL is excited to plant his flag in the cherished hip-hop recording house. “I’ve been floating around this industry since I’ve just been executive-producing 50 [Cent]’s albums,” XL explained Thursday at the MTV offices. “Freelancing, doing my own thing. I’ve been able to meet with L.A. Reid. We’ve been having some great conversations. Finally, the call came. It felt so good. Def Jam is such a strong company and strong roster. The staff is amazing. I felt it instantly. I knew that this is something I can do with my New York vision and New York swag and bring that for all the guys that’s based out here. And the things that was needed to excite the industry as well, internally and externally. I connect with everybody by all levels.” Sha said that after being with the G-Unit for so many years, there is no such thing as pressure to him anymore. “I work good under pressure,” he said. “Working with 50, I know what needs to get done. I don’t feel pressure. I do the things that need to be done. As long as artists listen and we really become businessmen in this business, as we say we are, I think we should all prosper. I’m looking to make the company more money and take it to the top, the highest level.” So with 50 Cent a free agent, free to bring himself and his label — which includes Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo — anywhere he pleases, will Sha try to secure a spot for his longtime friends at Def Jam? “I spoke to Fif, to [his manager Chris] Lighty. I would love to see that there,” Sha admitted. “Banks has an amazing record right now, independently. If things work out, then yeah, I would love to see that happen.” If the Unit came to Def Jam, things would get interesting, to say the least. Shyne, Rick Ross, Nas and DJ Khaled, people who Fif and the Unit have had problems with through the years, are all on the roster. “I’m a businessman,” Sha Money said when asked how he would feel having the Unit in the same building with some of their adversaries. “The beef stuff, I’m over. We at a certain point in life where we don’t even need that. We eat that. So I will let them speak for their own, but honestly, I would like to see a company continue to grow. And I think G-Unit is in a position — coming from an independent space — that can continue to do their thing. I would like to provide an opportunity for them to continue to grow.” While the Unit deal is just in the talking stages now, Sha says his top priority is making sure Juelz Santana gets his LP out. XL already has his sights set on DJ Toomp to get in the lab with Juelz. This will not be the last time you hear from Mixtape Daily on Friday (April 30), we promise. On Friday evening, we will have a preview of the mixtape you are all anticipating, Jadakiss’ Gangsta Grillz Invasion: The Champ Is Here Part 3. There’s no way we could get through this week without delivering a Main Pick.
