Lady Gaga HBO Special Gives Fans A Taste Of ‘Marry The Night’

Along with unreleased Born This Way track, Gaga gives Little Monsters an inside look at the Monster Ball. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Marco Prosch/ Getty Images Lady Gaga’s first-ever HBO special is nearly 120 minutes of Gaga onstage and giving fans unprecedented behind-the-scenes access. A mixture of concert footage in color and backstage shots in black-and-white, HBO’s “Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour: At Madison Square Garden” is a love letter to her hometown, fans and her roots and also puts viewers in the front row at one of her shows. The special opens with Gaga greeting her friends on the Lower East Side in Manhattan and buying a coffee at a local deli decked out in a biker jacket, bodysuit and heels. She struts through the neighborhood and into an SUV. She pulls up to Madison Square Garden. From the car, she greets her fans. “You know how many times I came to this arena? And now they’re opening up these gates for us,” she marvels to her team. Now viewers are backstage as she puts on makeup and confesses , “I start to think about all the people that have tried to stop me, and I get this super-intense fury. … I just sometimes feel like a loser still.” The biggest reveal in the special is watching Gaga backstage singing a few lines of her still-unreleased Born This Way track “Marry the Night.” It happens fast, but Little Monsters are sure to eat up footage of her singing the track to herself. “I’m gonna marry the night/ I won’t give up on my life/ I’m a warrior queen/ Live passionately tonight,” she sings to herself, waiting for her show to begin. This moment marries her pre-show life with her stage life. And just like that, fans are now at the Monster Ball at Madison Square Garden . The concert footage was shot earlier this year during two nights at MSG. The Monster Ball itself has been edited with a constant stream of Gaga-isms about her fans, adversity and individuality, along with quick frenzied backstage shots, song changes (old and new) and, of course, costume changes (many of which are documented in those backstage moments). It gives anyone who hasn’t been there in person a good idea of what the show is all about. The set list includes: “Just Dance,” “You and I,” “Born This Way,” “Alejandro” and many other Gaga favorites that are highlighted by Gaga’s ferocious presence and over-the-top staging. After the concert wraps, fans are once again backstage as Gaga, her team and her family celebrate the show. In a particularly touching moment, she hugs her dad. Gaga is seen leaving MSG in a feathered jacket as the special ends. During the credits, fans are treated to one last treat: Gaga practices “BTW” with her backup singers a cappella. Elton John Marvels As ‘The Union’ Opens Tribeca Film Fest

‘We can’t believe our luck,’ Elton tells MTV News at red-carpet premiere of Cameron Crowe musical documentary. By Eric Ditzian Elton John Photo: MTV News Ten years on, the Tribeca Film Festival is going on as strong — and as unpredictable — as ever. Last spring, the fest kicked things off in midtown Manhattan with the premiere of “Shrek Forever After.” This time around, Tribeca returned to its roots, settling into the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center (just steps from Ground Zero) for the debut of “The Union,” Cameron Crowe’s documentary about the Grammy-nominated musical collaboration between Elton John and Leon Russell. “We can’t believe our luck,” Elton told MTV News Wednesday on the red carpet as paparazzi flashbulbs popped around him. Joining the music legend on the carpet were Martin Scorsese, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Anna Kendrick, Rainn Wilson, Denis Leary, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Zoe Kravitz, ?uestlove, David O. Russell and others. Elton himself confessed he was initially nervous to invite Crowe’s cameras into the recording studio, but was very happy with the results and the opportunity to debut the film in New York. “I’ve never had a song filmed when I’m writing it, but Cameron’s such a friend, I trusted him,” he told us. “New York City is my favorite place to play. I’ve played 62 shows at Madison Square Garden, I’ve played at Radio City, Central Park, Shea Stadium, Fillmore East. It’s been a very important city in my musical career and probably the most exciting city in the world.” “The Union,” then, provides a singular window into Elton’s artistic process, and folks like ?uestlove couldn’t wait to see what it was all about. “The ’70s icons that we worship, they came before the information age,” the Roots drummer told us. “Now, you can watch Kanye make beats, but I would love to see how Elton collaborates. Who does the music, who does the lyrics, how that all works out.” And as the celebs glided down the red carpet on their way inside the theater, many couldn’t help but marvel at how the festival, born in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, continues to thrive a decade later. “People forget that after 9/11, this neighborhood was devastated,” Denis Leary told us. “People were afraid to come down and some people were moving out. [Robert] De Niro and [festival co-founder] Jane Rosenthal brought people back down. They brought culture back down and real spirit, which is much to their credit.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Lady Gaga To Perform On ‘Saturday Night Live’

Sources tell MTV News she’ll appear alongside Justin Timberlake on May 7. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Tom Briglia/ WireImage When Justin Timberlake returns to host “Saturday Night Live” next month, none other than Lady Gaga will join him as musical guest during the May 7 show. A source confirmed the booking to MTV News, though no official confirmation has come though from “SNL” reps. Gaga last appeared on the show in October 2009 in what went down as one very memorable episode. Gaga and Madonna poked fun at pop-star rivalries during the sketch “Deep House Dish,” where they had a catfight and nearly kissed. That night, Gaga performed two songs: a high-concept take on “Paparazzi” and a piano-driven performance of her dance track “LoveGame.” She later appeared in a sketch alongside Andy Samberg, when both of them wore her famous bubble dress. Being that this latest appearance comes just as Gaga is dropping her May 23 album release Born This Way, there’s a good chance she’ll perform lead singles “Born This Way” and “Judas.” Or, as she’s known to do, she might just dazzle fans with a brand-new track. This is the latest promotional appearance announced for the album, including a May 27 appearance on “Good Morning America” that will kick off the show’s summer concert series and the May 7 premiere of Gaga’s highly anticipated HBO special , which was taped at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February. She also just wrapped up work on her video for “Judas,” though no date has been set for its release. What are you expecting from Gaga’s return trip to “SNL”? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (DVD/Blu-ray Combo)

Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (DVD/Blu-ray Combo) Justin Bieber (Actor) , John Chu (Director)   |   Format: Blu-ray 864% Sales Rank in Movies & TV: 68 (was 656 yesterday) (8) Buy new: $27.99 (Visit the Movers & Shakers in Movies & TV list for authoritative information on this product’s current rank.) Review & Description Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is the inspiring, entertaining and intimate look at the life and meteoric rise of pop phenomenon Justin Bieber. From small town boy to global super-star, Never Say Never follows Justin Bieber’s journey from his early years, to his rise from break-out internet sensation to global super-star, culminating with a sold-out show at the famed Madison Square Garden. More than just a concert, Never Say Never is a captivating, cinematic event featuring all-star musical talent including, Usher, Jaden Smith, Ludacris, and more! Never underestimate the power of perseverance, social media, good hair, and a winning smile. Small town boy Justin Bieber is a young musician (16 years old at the time of this film’s release) who started out goofing around on the drums at home as a young child and posting videos on You Tube as a preteen. With the help of producer Scooter Braun, he has rocketed to the status of pop phenomenon, performing for a sold-out house at the coveted Madison Square Garden in less than two years. Part documentary, part concert video, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never combines archival home videos with live concert footage; interviews with everyone from Justin’s young single mother and his grandparents to his vocal coach “Mama Jan” Smith, pop icon and actor Usher, and producer Braun; and way too much footage of squealing, overwrought preteen female fans (the latter will likely cause one’s eyes to spontaneously roll back in one’s head and trigger a gag reflex unless one happens to be a 10- to 12-year-old girl). Showcased are Bieber’s early visits to every radio station imaginable; his life backstage, on the road, and during a rare visit with his friends back home; the determination of those around him to keep his life as normal as possible; and lots of up-close footage of his concerts. Throughout the 10 days preceding his Garden debut, guest artists like Miley Cyrus, Usher, Jaden Smith, and Boyz II Men join Bieber onstage for collaborative performances of songs including “Overboard,” “Somebody to Love,” “Never Say Never,” and “U Smile.” Bieber also deals with the stress and pain of a throat infection that causes him to cancel his first show ever and threatens to prevent him from honoring his performance date at the Garden. Finally, the day of the Madison Square Garden performance arrives and viewers are treated to a great sampling of Bieber’s powerful performance. The film does a good job of chronicling Bieber’s rise to stardom, but let’s face it, his career has spanned less than two years as of this film, so there’s not really all that much to say in a movie that lasts almost two hours. But even if you’re not a rabid Justin Bieber fan, you have to admit the kid has talent and you’ve got to respect his incredible journey.
