There He Goes, There He Goes, There He Goes, There He Goes… | James Moody Has Died

Just “opened” The New York Times to discover that a real favorite of mine, James Moody, has died. Here's the initial article….. December 10, 2010 James Moody, Jazz Saxophonist, Dies at 85 By PETER KEEPNEWS James Moody, a jazz saxophonist and flutist celebrated for his virtuosity, his versatility and his onstage ebullience, died on Thursday in San Diego. He was 85. His death, at a hospice, was confirmed by his wife, Linda. Mr. Moody lived in San Diego. Last month, Mr. Moody disclosed that he had pancreatic cancer and had decided against receiving chemotherapy or radiation treatment. Mr. Moody, who began his career with the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie shortly after World War II and maintained it well into the 21st century, developed distinctive and equally fluent styles on both tenor and alto saxophone, a relatively rare accomplishment in jazz. He also played soprano saxophone, and in the mid-1950s he became one of the first significant jazz flutists, impressing the critics if not himself. “I’m not a flute player,” he told one interviewer. “I’m a flute holder.” The self-effacing humor of that comment was characteristic of Mr. Moody, who took his music more seriously than he took himself. Musicians admired him for his dexterity, his unbridled imagination and his devotion to his craft, as did critics; reviewing a performance in 1980, Gary Giddins of The Village Voice praised Mr. Moody’s “unqualified directness of expression” and said his improvisations at their best were “mini-epics in which impassioned oracles, comic relief, suspense and song vie for chorus time.” But audiences were equally taken by his ability to entertain. Defying the stereotype of the modern jazz musician as austere and humorless (and following the example of Gillespie, whom he considered his musical mentor and with whom he worked on and off for almost half a century), Mr. Moody told silly jokes, peppered his repertory with unlikely numbers like “Beer Barrel Polka” and the theme from “The Flintstones,” and often sang. His singing voice was unpolished but enthusiastic — and very distinctive, partly because he spoke and sang with a noticeable lisp, a result of having been born partly deaf. The song he sang most often had a memorable name and an unusual history. Based on the harmonic structure of “I’m in the Mood for Love,” it began life as an instrumental when Mr. Moody recorded it in Stockholm in 1949, improvising an entirely new melody on a borrowed alto saxophone. Released as “I’m in the Mood for Love” (and credited to that song’s writers) even though his rendition bore only the faintest resemblance to the original tune, it was a modest hit for Mr. Moody in 1951. It became a much bigger hit shortly afterward when the singer Eddie Jefferson wrote lyrics to Mr. Moody’s improvisation and another singer, King Pleasure, recorded it as “Moody’s Mood for Love.” “Moody’s Mood for Love” (which begins with the memorable lyric “There I go, there I go, there I go, there I go …”) became a jazz and pop standard, recorded by Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Van Morrison, Amy Winehouse and others. And it was a staple of Mr. Moody’s concert and nightclub performances as sung by Mr. Jefferson, who was a member of his band for many years. Mr. Jefferson was shot to death in 1979; when Mr. Moody, who was in the middle of a long hiatus from jazz at the time, resumed his career a few years later, he began singing the song himself. He never stopped. James Moody — he was always Moody, never James, Jim or Jimmy, to his friends and colleagues — was born in Savannah, Ga., on March 26, 1925, to James and Ruby Moody, and raised in Newark. Despite being hard of hearing, he gravitated toward music and began playing alto saxophone at 16, later switching to tenor. He played with an all-black Army Air Forces band during World War II. After being discharged in 1946, he auditioned for Gillespie, who led one of the first big bands to play the complex and challenging new form of jazz known as bebop. He failed that audition but passed a second one a few months later, and soon captured the attention of the jazz world with a brief but fiery solo on the band’s recording of the Gillespie composition “Emanon.” Mr. Moody’s career was twice interrupted by alcoholism. The first time, in 1948, he moved to Paris to live with an uncle while he recovered. He returned to the United States in 1951 to capitalize on the success of “I’m in the Mood for Love,” forming a seven-piece band that mixed elements of modern jazz with rhythm and blues. After a fire at a Philadelphia nightclub destroyed the band’s equipment, uniforms and sheet music in 1958, he began drinking again and checked himself into the Overbrook psychiatric hospital in Cedar Grove, N.J. After a stay of several months, he celebrated his recovery by writing and recording the uptempo blues “Last Train From Overbrook,” which became one of his best-known compositions. In 1963 he reunited with Gillespie, joining his popular quintet. He was featured as both a soloist and the straight man for Gillespie’s between-songs banter, sharpening his musical and comedic skills at the same time. He left Gillespie in 1969 to try his luck as a bandleader again but met with limited success; four years later he left jazz entirely to work in Las Vegas hotel orchestras. “The reason I went to Las Vegas,” he told Saxophone Journal in 1998, “was because I was married and had a daughter and I wanted to grow up with my kid. I was married before and I didn’t grow up with the kids. So I said, ‘I’m going to really be a father.’ I did much better with this one because at least I stayed until my daughter was 12 years old. And that’s why I worked Vegas, because I could stay in one spot.” After seven years of pit-band anonymity, providing accompaniment for everyone from Milton Berle to Ike and Tina Turner to Liberace, Mr. Moody divorced his wife, Margena, and returned to the East Coast to resume his jazz career. His final three decades were productive, with frequent touring and recording (as the leader of his own small group and, on occasion, as a sideman with Gillespie, who died in 1993) and even a brief foray into acting, with a bit part in the 1997 Clint Eastwood film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,” set in Mr. Moody’s birthplace, Savannah. The National Endowment for the Arts named him a Jazz Master in 1998. His last album, “Moody 4B,” was recorded in 2008 and released this year on the IPO label; it earned a Grammy nomination this month. Mr. Moody, who was divorced twice, is survived by his wife of 21 years, the former Linda Peterson McGowan; three sons, Patrick, Regan and Danny McGowan; a daughter, Michelle Moody Bagdanove; a brother, Louis Watters; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson. For all his accomplishments, Mr. Moody always saw his musical education as a work in progress. “I’ve always wanted to be around people who know more than me,” he told The Hartford Courant in 2006, “because that way I keep learning.” added by: EthicalVegan

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry Rock Jingle Ball

Madison Square Garden concert also featured Enrique Iglesias, B.o.B. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber performs at “Jingle Ball 2010” Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images NEW YORK — At 7:30 p.m. on the nose, the house lights went down, the girls went crazy, and Jingle Ball 2010 got the party started Friday (December 10) for a rousing night of music and fun at Madison Square Garden. Kim Kardashian, in a white body-hugging dress, kicked off the night’s festivities by noting that it was her first time ever at MSG, then bringing Taio Cruz to the stage. He played “Break Your Heart” and “Dynamite,” and for his track “Higher,” he was joined by Travie McCoy, though the song usually features British pop princess Kylie Minogue. Jesse McCartney was on hand to proudly invite Bruno Mars to the stage. The Grammy nominee played drums for an excited crowd. He played “Billionaire,” and the entire room sang along as McCoy joined him for their ode to getting famous. The crowd ate it up. He then slowed it down with “Grenade.” The set ended with “Just the Way You Are” to the delight of the crowd. Jay Sean beat-boxed, then helped introduce Paramore to the stage. The band brought some loud, boombastic rock to the show thanks to a set that included “Brick by Boring Brick.” “Anybody else care to join the party tonight?” frontwoman Hayley Williams asked the crowd before blaring out “Misery” and inviting a fan onstage to sing with her. They finished it off with “The Only Exception.” B.o.B was next to the stage. The rapper got real with his track “Don’t Let Me Fall.” Then the crowd went insane for “Magic.” As if that didn’t get the girls hyped enough, Bruno Mars returned for “Beautiful Girls.” “Everybody put your hands up,” B.o.B told the crowd before playing his massive “Airplanes” with Williams by his side. The crowd went nuts when Flo Rida introduced Selena Gomez for her dance-tastic performance of “Round and Round.” Gomez looked like a true disco queen in her little black dress and heels. She thanked Katy Perry for her next track, “Rock God,” then got trancey for her song “A Year Without Rain,” and ended her set with “Naturally,” crediting it as the reason she got a spot on the radio tour. The show took an adult contemporary and old school turn when Michael Buble arrived to croon tunes such as “Hollywood” and “Haven’t Met You Yet,” and for “Let it Snow,” he got in the crowd and paid homage to the season, dusting MSG with snow confetti. Katy Perry brought the girl power in her performance, which featured ballerinas, Christmas trees, Santa Clauses and Perry popping out of a gift box in a latex toy soldier costume for “Hot n Cold.” “This is Madison Square Garden!” she shouted to the crowd. “This is something I’ve dreamt about for a long time.” “This next song is about falling in love with a foreigner, like far away … Not even in England,” she said to introduce “E.T.” After a jazzy version of “I Kissed a Girl,” she proudly proclaimed, “Let’s dedicate this West Coast anthem to the East Coast right now,” ending her performance with “California Gurls” as red and green confetti fell from the ceiling. Pauly D prompted the loudest screams of the night when he introduced Enrique Iglesias. The Latin pop star played the clean version of “Tonight,” followed by older jams such as “Escape” and “Hero,” serenading a girl from the audience. With the swooning complete, Iglesias ended with fan favorite “I Like It.” Kardashian returned, telling the crowd, “I think I’m catching a fever,” before the night’s most-anticipated performance: Justin Bieber. In a plaid top and khakis, the teen star got his party started with “Somebody to Love.” Bieber was in full swagga mode, dancing like a seasoned pro and getting the crowd hyped. “The last time I was here for Jingle Ball, I had a broken foot, and this year, I’m here and both my limbs are working,” he joked. “We shot a movie here, and it’s coming out in February, and I think we should show you a preview.” The trailer transitioned to “Never Say Never.” Bieber even brought out a surprise guest, Jayden Smith, to join him. “I had someone who’s really special to me, and I decided to bring him out,” he then announced, calling for Sean Kingston for “Eenie Meenie.” The girls went crazy as the pals went back and forth on the cut. “I think I want to slow it down a little bit. My acoustic album had an extra song on it that’s really important to me. But first, I need everyone to close their eyes and ‘Pray,’ ” he said before the inspirational ballad. He then teased the excited crowd, saying, “I think we should do one more song,” and listing some of his track names. He settled on “Baby.” “Who wants to be my baby?” he asked. He ended the night with showers of fireworks and confetti, saying, “You guys are amazing.” Did you go to Jingle Ball 2010? Give us your review in the comments below! Matt Rutler and Christina Aguilera: Getting Serious?

Bad news for concerned friends of Christina Aguilera: things are getting serious between the singer and production assistant/musician Matt Rutler. Those close to Aguilera are reportedly worried that she’s rebounding from her divorce with the wrong man , but that hasn’t stopped this relationship from progressing. The couple enjoyed an evening out at the Abbey in West Hollywood on November 24, where a witness says the pair drank, danced and “Christina was in a great mood and seemed very into Matt.” From there, sources tell People that Aguilera and Rutler flew to New York for the weekend, as the former left son Max with his father, Jordan Bratman. “This is the first Thanksgiving she was without Max,” said an insider. “It was really hard for her and she was feeling sad, so she decided to go to the East Coast with Matt and a group of friends.” The trip cross country took these two to Rhode Island, where Aguilera took a major step in meeting Rutler’s mother. Does these mean wedding bells might actually be on the way already? Not so fast, says a friend: “They’re still getting to know each other better.” Christina met Matthew on the set of Burlesque , where he worked as a production assistant and she worked as one of the leads in the movie alongside Cher. Russell Brand Nixed Katy Perry-John Mayer Hookup!

Apparently John Mayer doesn’t always get the girl. Thank goodness. As if Katy Perry and Russell Brand weren’t awesome enough, the zany British comic apparently rescued her from J-Mayer’s clutches at the last second! According to E! News, John and Katy were well on their way to sexy coupledom when Russell intercepted her at the 2009 VMAs and snagged KP for himself. As celebrity love triangles go, this one worked out for the best. It was love at first sight at the awards show. But just one night earlier, Perry and the douchebag met in person after weeks of trading flirty tweets and texts. “They’d never met in person, and she went to meet him there after she was at a Jay-Z concert at Madison Square Garden,” a source close to Mayer reports. “John thought she was so hot and fun and was into her,” the insider says . “They were flirty and all over each other at the bar, they really liked each other.” “They were dancing and it was on.” They stayed at the bar until late, leaving only moments apart from the downtown bar, conveniently just around the corner from Mayer’s love nest. Gag . The next day, which happened to be the VMAs, the two traded more flirty texts. But before their relationship could blossom any further, enter Brand. As luck would have it, Russell, who was hosting the awards, was instantly taken by the “Teenage Dream” singer, openly admiring her from the stage. She was equally smitten. The rest is history.
