Francesca Schiavone settles into unfamiliar demands of a champion

The Italian French Open winner dismisses talk of being a late bloomer and says she has timed her peak perfectly Two weeks ago Francesca Schiavone walked off the Philippe Chatrier court at Roland Garros transformed from a 29-year-old tennis journeywoman into the French Open champion and Italy’s inaugural female winner of a tennis major. Schiavone’s record at grand slams had been modest, with only quarter-final appearances at Wimbledon and the US Open in her 12-year professional career. Ranked 17th in Paris she had not been favoured against Sam Stosur, the Australian who had beaten her the previous year in the opening round on the way to the semi-final. Yet Schiavone, who is from Milan, beat Stosur 6-4, 7-6. On Wednesday the Italian turns 30. Yet she is phlegmatic regarding her late flowering when asked the obvious question. “Everybody asks about my age, about arriving late,” she says. “Late? From where? Maybe late for you, maybe late for another person. But I think it was the time for me, 29 years old. When you are 29, or 32, why not? Everybody talks about when you’re 20, they say you want everything now, in this moment. But it’s not like this. Everybody is different. I’m different.” Pressed, Schiavone elaborates a little, saying ambition did not take hold until she was a teenager. “When I was seven I didn’t think of becoming a champion tennis player,” she says. “When I was 16 years old I was at high school and practised for two hours in the afternoon, so it’s bit different when maybe your friends, or your parents, or your school say: ‘Yes, you have quality, so you can work on it. Start early.’ Sometimes you start later, but not late for you – maybe late for the system, but everybody is different.” Schiavone, who is now ranked sixth in the world and faces the Russian No47 Vera Dushevina in the opening round of next week’s Wimbledon, is still adjusting to the demands of becoming a champion. “Something has changed,” she says. “I stayed in Italy for three or four days [after winning in Paris]. I did many press and TV interviews. That was tough. It was new, so I had to learn how to organise myself, to be sitting talking in front of 300 or 400 people. “I had a big party in Paris. The second was when I arrived home. I went to my parents’ house, which is in a really small town [Passerano]. I grew up in Milan, but during the summer I always went up into the hills, to my mother’s house. The town is small, just 1,000 people. And there were 1,000 people at the front of my house and in my garden. It was fantastic, really big emotions.” Her victory also touched prominent Italians, including Marcello Lippi, who watched her victory and subsequently declared that Schiavone embodied their nation’s spirit. “Marcello Lippi is very hard and very focused all the time,” she says of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning coach, who is back in charge of the national team. “If he enjoyed my tennis he must have really chosen to do so. Massimo Moratti, the Inter president [also sent a message], so that was an honour for me. But if I receive SMS messages from friends, people who don’t necessarily know me, that’s the same.” Last year Schiavone reached the quarter-finals in SW19 for the first time. This year she hopes to improve. “I’ll try to do better. It’s not easy. Nothing is free, nothing is easy. I always have to prepare well for every tournament, for every match. On grass you have to be really healthy and strong. I think in some days I will recover my energies and I’ll be good and ready to play a good Wimbledon. I can’t say more.” Wimbledon Tennis Jamie Jackson guardian.co.uk

Eminem Enlists Sham Wow Guy For Recovery Ad

Video features pitchman Vince demonstrating the many uses of the disc, out June 21. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: Nigel Parry Now that Eminem has pushed up the release date of Recovery by a day to June 21 (following the album’s leak last week), the Detroit rapper is pulling out the big guns to promote the disc. In a new video ad called “Emwow” that looks calculated to go viral, Vince the ShamWow guy sets aside the miracle sponge for 30 seconds to sell you about the slice-it, dice-it wonders of the new Marshall Mathers disc. Wearing a black polo embroidered with the Recovery title and his signature headset, Vinny holds up the disc and announces, “Hey, it’s Vince with Eminem’s new album, Recovery, and you’re gonna be clappin’ when you hear Eminem rappin’.” He then demonstrates the “dozens of uses” for the disc, including slicing razor-thin tomatoes for your sandwich, serving as a drink coaster, a necklace for the ladies or even as bling for your garden hose (get it?). He even suggests cutting the disc in half (an unusual selling point for a CD, but we’ll go with it) and using one part to slice cheese and the other to chop onions. “Tacos, steak bone, silicone,” Vince demonstrates, tossing aside a breast implant and oversharing, “I like mine real, so forget about it.” This being Eminem, the ad ends with some bathroom humor, as Vince announces a special bonus product thrown in for free, a feminine-hygiene product called the ShamPon. The rapper surprised his fans at Activision’s E3 party on Monday night in Los Angeles, bringing out guests Travis Barker and Rihanna to help him celebrate the upcoming release. A spokesperson for Em’s label said the album, which features guest spots from Pink and Lil Wayne in addition to Rihanna, will hit stores a day earlier than expected to satisfy the rapper’s biggest supporters. “We believe fans want to support their favorite artists by purchasing the real album and not a leaked version,” Steve Berman, vice-chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, said in a press release announcing the new date. “At the same time, we realize speed is of the essence when fans are so passionate about wanting to hear new songs from such an enormously popular artist like Eminem. … Even by releasing Recovery only a day earlier than previously announced, it makes a difference to those fans.” What do you think of the “Emwow” ad? Does it make you more likely to buy the new disc? Sound off in the comments. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Eminem Related Artists Eminem

Charles Eames And His Wacky "Do Nothing Machine"

Charles Eames is my hero and my house is full of Eames chairs (half of which are broken because the rubber pucks dried out and split, small design flaw) but I never knew about his “do nothing machine” shown in BoingBoing. It is part of a Life Magazine Solar Power Back In The Day slideshow, every picture of which I remember from my childhood. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Leona Lewis Gets the Shaft

Leona Lewis has some serious bad luck. Last year alone, she was headbutted by a horse and sucker punched by a fan . Then yesterday, she revealed that she recently fell down an elevator shaft. Really. The latest exercise in horrendously odd happenstance took place in Sheffield, England, last week, while Lewis was performing onstage. That can’t have felt good. Luckily, the Simon Cowell protege emerged unharmed in the incident, which occurred when the elevator she was in got stuck and she fell down the shaft. Happens to the best of us, right? Leona Lewis is a magnet for danger. “We have been having problems with the lift,” she explained. “It had been going fine in rehearsals and then I had a bit of an accident and fell down the lift shaft.” “It was quite scary. “I was lucky not to get injured. Fortunately it happened during a blackout on set and didn’t affect the show or the audience. I got a shock and had to be rescued.” “I had to just get back up and carry on,” she said . And, presumably, be wary of any falling pianos … Wile E. Coyote’s security team had better step things up.

Josie Duggar, Baby #19, Finally Sent Home

Josie Brooklyn Duggar, the youngest child of Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting , has finally made it to the family’s Arkansas home. Her brief life has already required two hospitalizations, but “We’re so happy that she’s doing well,” Michelle told People. “She’s finally home, home, home.” Josie was born on December 10 at only 25 weeks, weighing 1 lb. 6 oz., after Michelle’s life-threatening high blood pressure and emergency C-section. Since then, Josie has battled for her life. She gained weight and was released on April 6, only to return only a few days later when her vital signs fell. Doctors searched far and wide for a cause of her problems. A giant family reunion awaits Josie Brooklyn Duggar. “Her digestive issues have been linked to lactose intolerance,” says Dr. Robert Arrington, co-director of the NICU at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. “We are all very happy that she is doing so well and fully expect her to continue to thrive. Today, as she’s leaving , she looks like a full-term baby.” Now 7 lbs. 6 oz., Josie is at last ready to settle her into a schedule at their Little Rock rental home with her 18 siblings. Well, actually, only 17 of them. Her oldest brother Josh, 22, lives with his wife and daughter, who’s actually older than her aunt Josie. But they’ll come visit for support, we would imagine. Josie’s emotional homecoming from the hospital will be featured on the premiere of 19 Kids and Counting . That’s a lot of kids … and a lot of love to share.

Amy Winehouse Lives, For Now

You never know with Amy Winehouse. It’s noteworthy to see her out and about, since it’s always so entertaining and she no longer makes music, really. Back to Black came out in 2006 and she’s been working on the follow-up ever since. Problem is … well, where do you start. Blake Fielder-Civil , for one. The last time we heard from her, she fell over in a domestic incident and had to be hospitalized. Fortunately, she finally turned up at Jazz After Dark yesterday. The troubled musician was singing, eating meatballs, drinking sangria and checking out the 30 paintings that she has commissioned from the owner. That’s about it. But it’s par for the course for Wino … Amy Winehouse looks better than ever, we have to say. [Photos: Fame]

DJ Pauly D Ponders, Discusses the Ideal Woman

The Situation says his perfect girl could be “anyone.” When it comes to selecting a future wife (or trash bag for a typical Friday), he’s an equal-opportunity guy. DJ Pauly D (Paul Delvecchio) is little more selective than his buddy, however. “She’s gotta take care of herself,” Delvecchio said Sunday before deejaying at Las Vegas’s Palms Casino Resort. “She’s gotta be, like, drop-dead gorgeous.” Well, yeah. But does recent, likely hookup Paris Hilton match that description? “She’s gotta stand out in a crowd. She’s gotta take care of herself like I do.” DJ Pauly D takes care of himself. [Photo: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] By “take care of herself,” Pauly D presumably means provide for herself, but his perfect woman would adhere to the same GTL motto (gym, tan, laundry) as he does. “A confident girl for Pauly D is what I need,” he says. “She’s gotta be beautiful.” We’re sensing some consistent themes here on Pauly D’s list of criteria. The second season of Jersey Shore began in Miami this spring. Pauly, Ronnie and The Situation shirtless are now back in the Garden State. The premiere is July 29. What can viewers expect? “So much more everything,” Delvecchio says. “More drama, fights, hookups, more everything. It was insane. I had the time of my life. I love Miami. We just killed it out there. You gotta be outside. The pool parties. The beach. The music. Nice tan. Good-looking people. That’s the ideal summer.”
