Spider-Man ‘Belongs To Everybody,’ Andrew Garfield Says

‘I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror,’ the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ star tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield Photo: MTV News With the release of the new trailer for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” fans got their first extended look at Andrew Garfield ‘s take on the wall crawler before the movie hits theaters in July. He’s darker and a bit more sarcastic, but with a series reboot coming so soon after the three films directed by Sam Raimi and starring Tobey Maguire, comparisons between the two are bound to dominate much of the conversation. Garfield doesn’t necessarily see the need for comparison and told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz that he would have a hard time describing any differences. “I can’t answer that, really. I don’t know. I know that I saw the Sam Raimi/ Tobey Maguire version before it was legally out. I was so excited to see it, I got a pirate copy,” Garfield told MTV News before a screening event Monday. “I was blown away. [Tobey has] been Spider-Man in my imagination since then, in my mind’s eye.” The star explained how “The Amazing Spider-Man” was made with the series’ history in mind and how that added to the story. “Thinking about those movies outside of just knowing the history that was supporting our movie, we are just another chapter in the legacy,” he said. “I approached the character like any fan would: with real reverence and terror and attempt to do it justice.” Garfield has never kept his own fandom a secret, having even appeared at San Diego Comic-Con in store-bought Spidey regalia. That passion played a big part in how he thinks about the role. “I do feel like he’s in me, like all true fans do,” he said. “That’s what being a fan is of a character like this: feeling like there’s no separation between you and them and that you have ownership over them. Ultimately, you have no ownership over it, because he belongs to everybody.” When it comes down to it, the actor in the suit doesn’t actually matter, according to Garfield. “The symbol is bigger than any actor playing him and any particular movie or comic book,” he said. “The symbol of the mask, the symbol of the suit, it doesn’t even matter who’s in it, as long as somebody’s in it to keep the symbol alive. That’s what’s important to me.” But as Uncle Ben said, “With great power, comes great responsibility.” Though it may not matter to Spider-Man fans who is in the suit, getting up every morning to play the man is a different story. “In terms of how I approached it, I just approached it every day I woke up. My first thought was ‘Oh, boy,’ ” Garfield said. “Then my second thought was, ‘Remember, just go from a place of being a fan and caring as deeply as you do.’ You have to just let go and trust from there on. If people like it, people like it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Andrew Garfield Surprises ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Fans

Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans and director Marc Webb also pop in during 3-D premiere of new trailer. By Kevin P. Sullivan Andrew Garfield in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Marvel / Columbia Pictures NEW YORK — Spider-Man fans came out in droves around the globe and in the web-slinger’s hometown to get “a sneak peek into the untold story” from the upcoming film. That’s all they knew when they lined up hours early outside Manhattan’s Regal Union Square. As similar events were taking place in major cities worldwide, no one in the audience knew about the surprises four of the events, in particular, held in store. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz moderated the New York event and welcomed fans as they took their seats. The theater grew quiet, and a live feed from L.A. replaced the Spider-Man insignia on the screen. The L.A. host welcomed the director of “The Amazing Spider-Man,” Marc Webb, to join him on-camera. Webb threw it to Rio de Janeiro, where Emma Stone was introduced. A trip across the pond revealed the film’s villain, Rhys Ifans , but it wasn’t until the special guest in New York that the crowd lost their minds. Andrew Garfield , the man behind the mask, stepped out from a side door, inciting an out-of-control roar from the theater. A man shouted “Hallelujah” from the crowd, and Garfield couldn’t help but agree: “Hallelujah. You said exactly what was on my mind,” he said. “It means the world to all of us that you care so much. Thank you for being here.” Back in L.A., Webb instructed the audiences around the world to put on their 3-D glasses for the new trailer for “Amazing Spider-Man,” hours before the world premiere. Each of the four special guests then answered a question about the upcoming film. Webb addressed the new story and villain. Stone described how Gwen Stacy is the polar opposite to Mary Jane Watson. Ifans explained how Dr. Connors’ flaws make him more significant and how the connection to Peter’s father makes the film more emotional. Garfield answered a simple question — “Why did you want to be Spider-Man?” — in a simple and honest way: “Because I’m not an idiot,” he said. “It’s the thing everyone wants.” He explained that the role doesn’t belong to him, the character belongs to everyone. Garfield even expressed hopes that the next actor to play Peter Parker would be “half Hispanic/half African-American,” like the current iteration of Spider-Man in the Ultimate run, Miles Morales. The event concluded with an extended sizzle reel, lasting about seven minutes in all, of new 2-D footage, much of which was unfinished. Scenes included an awkward and cute scene between Peter and Gwen and a short sequence showing Peter developing his powers. Andrew Garfield’s Journey Toward Spider-Man

Young actor’s life will never be the same following director Marc Webb’s choosing him as the new Spider-Man. By Eric Ditzian Andrew Garfield Photo: Jon Furniss/ Getty Images On Thursday night in Cancun, Mexico, new “Spider-Man” director Marc Webb and his producers took the stage at a press event to make a long-awaited announcement — one feverishly anticipated and debated since the collapse of Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” in January: the name of the new Spider-Man . “Though his name may be new to many, those who have seen his work will know this young man embodies an exceedingly rare combination of intelligence, wit and humanity,” Webb said onstage . “Without further ado, meet your new Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield.” And with that, the 26-year-old Garfield walked onto the stage to a chorus of applause, his life never to be the same again. For while he does have a significant filmography to his name, he’s never experienced anything that can compare to being the face of a blockbuster comic-book franchise. Born in Los Angeles, he was raised outside London and got his start as an actor on the stage. In 2006, he was dubbed outstanding newcomer at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards for his West End stage work and in 2007 shared the London Theatre Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award. By that point, Garfield had already stepped in front of the camera for big- and small-screen work. He appeared alongside Robert Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep in “Lions for Lambs,” prompting Variety to name him one of 10 Actors to Watch. “I’m just lucky to be there working on the same project as them, although I don’t really expect to be recognized later by audiences,” he told the magazine. Across the pond, he blew British audiences away with his performance as a secretive kid in “Boy A,” a TV movie that won Garfield a BAFTA Best Actor Award . Perhaps his most well-known role to date, though, is a turn opposite Heath Ledger in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” in which he played a gangly kid and romantic rival to Ledger as they both competed for the affections of Lily Cole. While “Spider-Man” won’t hit theaters until the summer of 2012, this year is already shaping up to be a profile-raising one for Garfield. He stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg this fall in the highly anticipated, David Fincher-directed “The Social Network” and also with Keira Knightley in “Never Let Me Go,” an adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s haunting novel of the same name. 1991 Was Awesome
