Andrew Garfield: I Could Have Been Justin Bieber

Andrew Garfield is sticking up for Justin Bieber. Despite the singer’s run of erratic, boorish behavior (we still aren’t over that Justin Bieber deposition just yet), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 star blames the artist’s circumstances a lot more than the artist himself. “If I had had these opportunities when I was younger, I would have been Justin Bieber,” Garfield tells Time Out London. Meaning what, exactly? “If you are a 16-year-old kid and you can do whatever the f-ck you want, you’re making trillions of dollars and you have a leopard-print Ferrari, it’s not healthy.” Bieber, of course, got arrested for DUI and drag racing in January and, although it’s VERY unlikely he will serve any time, Garfield says he probably would have gone behind bars at that age if roles were reversed. “If I was going through what I’m going through now when I was 16, I might have ended up in jail.” Garfield is only the latest celebrity to respond to Bieber’s crazy antics. Unexpected Feud of the Week: Andrew Garfield vs. Robert Pattinson!

In a battle of webs against fangs, which will come out on top? That’s the question we’re now forced to ask, as Us Weekly sources report that an unexpected feud is brewing in Hollywood: Andrew Garfield vs. Robert Pattinson ! Simply put… “Andrew can’t stand Rob,” the tabloid insider claims. “Andrew hates that they’re put in the same category because they’re both English and around the same age.” And Pattinson isn’t itching to befriend the latest superhero star either, allegedly, as each attended the wedding of producer Kevin Turen on June 23, but “spent much of the night ignoring each other,” according to a witness, who added: “They don’t enjoy hanging out. Andrew considers himself a ‘serious actor’ and sees Rob as the equivalent of a cheesy boy bander because of Twilight .” Ouch. Zing and a half! Will Robert soon fire back? He is in a fighting mood these days, recently calling out whoever came up with the nickname R. Patt . You tell us, readers: Which of these actors would you rather do anything but fight with… naked in bed?

How Andrew Garfield Changed ‘Spider-Man’

The British actor was instrumental in providing Peter Parker with a skateboard and some much-needed wit in the ‘Amazing’ reboot. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield in “Amazing Spider-Man” Photo: Among his many powers, Spider-Man has one “Amazing” gift that perhaps you don’t already know about: He is a skilled skateboarder. Andrew Garfield, the British actor filling out Peter Parker’s shoes in director Marc Webb’s “Amazing Spider-Man,” brought many ideas to the superhero reboot’s table, including his character’s proficiency with a skateboard. Speaking with MTV News, Garfield said that “a lot changed” over the course of shooting “Spider-Man,” including his very own idea to have Spidey wield a board at numerous points throughout the movie. “It was my idea that this iteration of Peter would skateboard, maybe because I skateboarded when I was a kid, and it’s something personal to me,” the actor said at the “Amazing Spider-Man” press junket. “It linked in so nicely with being able to activate the powers in a new way.” Garfield teamed up with director Spike Jonze’s Girl and Chocolate Skateboards and persuaded the powers that be to include scenes of Peter messing around with skateboards, adding some levity to an otherwise “heavy” script. “What’s always been important about Spider-Man to me is the lightness, the humor and the enjoyment of a teenage kid getting these powers. In reality, what would happen?” he said. “We pitched the idea to [the Spider-Man producers] and they shot it. I thought that was awesome.” Another scene that changed due to Garfield’s input: the infamous carjacking sequence that sees Peter in full Spidey regalia for the first time, webbing up and taunting a criminal with lots of laughs and very little restraint. “That was important to me, in terms of the humor, the wit, finding the power of anonymity,” he said. “That was a fun night, because it was all improvised and free. There was nothing scripted about that. That was awesome.” Overall, Garfield found the entirety of “Spider-Man” to be “a forever evolving process,” thanks in large to Webb’s place at the head of the film. “It was all changing,” said the actor. “Marc set up an environment where we could play, and that was really, really nice.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘Spider-Man’ Star Andrew Garfield Reveals Spidey ‘Shrine’

‘I did try to look at every single thing that exists,’ he tells MTV News of his research for the role. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield Photo: MTV News Most Spider-Man fans would agree that the man who plays the iconic hero should be a fan. In that respect, Andrew Garfield fits the bill perfectly. When Garfield spoke with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz before a screening event for fans , he explained his process of tackling the role for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and it involved lots and lots of comic books. “I did try to look at every single thing that exists. That is impossible, I discovered, but I did my best,” he said. But naturally, as a fan, there would be certain incarnations of the web-slinger that resonated with Garfield and helped him conceive his take on Spider-Man. For Garfield, those insights came from many different comic book sources. “There were certain things that I loved for his physicality. There were certain things that I loved for his wit. There were certain incarnations that I loved for his body type,” Garfield said. “The Ultimates, I love the body type in the Ultimates and his physicality in the Ultimates, but I also love the artwork in the ‘Torment’ series, the [Todd] McFarlane series.” Once those pieces were found, it was a matter of stringing them all together into an in-depth conception of the superhero. Garfield and his stunt team attempted to go through every level of Peter Parker’s life and think of the implications of his powers. “Me and the stunt boys, we created a room where we just had a shrine to everything Spidey and to everything Peter Parker, because we wanted to make sure the physical language wasn’t just a guy in a suit being a guy in a suit and throwing punches and throwing kicks,” he said. “We didn’t want it to be Jason Statham in a suit. We wanted it to be a half-spider, half-boy, who has spider DNA running around his blood system.” To realistically pull this off, the team went step-by-step to imagine how Spider-Man would realistically act, something necessary for bringing him to the big screen. “We wanted to understand deeply what that meant in terms of how he moves, in terms of skin sensitivity, in terms of his abilities of awareness. Imagine if he had six eyes. Imagine if he had more legs and what that means, not just within the suit but in day-to-day life,” Garfield said. “He can eat Chinese takeout with his feet, while he’s also writing a note, while texting with his shoulder. What does that mean? We tried to approach it from as organic a place as possible.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
