Kristen Stewart Is ‘Incredible’ In ‘On The Road,’ Garrett Hedlund Says

‘Everyone is going to get to see how hard a worker she is,’ he tells MTV News of KStew. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News While Garrett Hedlund isn’t exactly a household name yet, filmgoers will soon be very familiar with him via his two new projects “Tron Legacy” and “Country Strong,” not to mention the upcoming “On the Road” film. When MTV News caught up with the busy man recently, we asked him about the recent uptick in his career — beginning with landing that coveted role in “On the Road.” “It’s the hardest I’ve ever had to work, which is a very good sign,” Hedlund said about the big-screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s tour-de-beatnik classic. “It’s the greatest experience of my lifetime — well, these last couple years have [been]. All these mean so much to me ,with ‘Tron Legacy’ and the world getting to see [‘Tron’ director] Joseph Kosinski for the first time, who I feel is the next great visionary genius,” he said. “For ‘Country Strong,’ I worked six months on the guitar to get that down and to play a country singer with Gwyneth [Paltrow] and that gets to showcase Shana Feste’s incredible talents as a writer/director, because she’s just miraculous. “Now with ‘On the Road,’ getting to work with Walter Salles, who I owe such a tremendous amount to because he gives me so much,” he explained of the “Motorcycle Diaries” director. “He fulfills me with so much other people haven’t been able to do, and he does it so simply.” Hedlund went on to say that “Road” will be full color not black-and-white, which had been rumored, and he called the experience, fittingly, “a long journey.” Regarding Kristen Stewart, Hedlund had nothing but the highest compliments to pay his co-star. “[She is] incredible, and in this, everyone is going to get to see how hard a worker she is, the devotion that she puts into her work,” Hedlund enthused. “And her performance is going to be exposed highly in this.” Hedlund added that the entire cast is packed with talent. “Everybody, Sam Riley is phenomenal, we’ve had a lot of wonderful surprises in having people like Viggo Mortenson, Amy Adams, Elisabeth Moss join us,” he said. “Most recently, Steve Buscemi and Terrence Howard. Alice Braga, it’s been phenomenal, it’s been quite the family.” Are you excited to see “On the Road”? Tell us in the comments! ‘Tron Legacy’ Star Olivia Wilde Recalls ‘Heart-Pounding’ Fight Scene

‘I was slammed back up against my chair, just overwhelmed by how awesome this movie turned out to be,’ actress tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Olivia Wilde Photo: MTV News “I was slammed back up against my chair, just overwhelmed by how awesome this movie turned out to be,” Olivia Wilde told us about watching “Tron Legacy” for the first time. It’s hard to disagree agree with the 26-year-old actress, who plays the bob-haired Quorra in the film. “Tron” is easily the most visually arresting film of the year, almost an art film made on a $170 million budget and filled with a handful of kick-ass fight sequences. The high-tech fisticuffs come courtesy of 87eleven, the stunt team behind brawls in “300,” “Iron Man 2” and the “Matrix” films. Of all the throw-downs, though, Wilde counts one in particular as her favorite. It comes late in the film, takes place in a computer-generated hotspot called the End of the Line club and pits Wilde and co-star Garrett Hedlund against a slew of bad guys. “It’s choreography we worked on for four months,” she said. “They showed us the choreography, and Garrett and I looked at each other and were like, ‘That’s not going to happen! We’re not going to be able to do that. That’s crazy stuff.’ And four months later, there we were doing it and enjoying it — really loving it. “When I saw the finished product of that scene, it’s so intense and beautiful and heart-pounding,” she added. “I was so proud.” Not only was Wilde proud, the entire production gave her the confidence to know that she could accomplish far more in front of the camera than she ever suspected. “It kind of proved to me I could really go outside my comfort zone,” she said. “This movie was the biggest physical transformation I’ve ever made. Also, a departure from my personality, more than any other character.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Tron Legacy ‘ Star Garrett Hedlund Calls Movie ‘Incredible Experience’

‘It’s such a high-tech adventure,’ actor tells MTV News on the film’s blue carpet. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Ryan Downey Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News “Tron” was an eye-popping technological extravaganza when it first hurtled into theaters in 1982 with its speeding light cycles and gaming imagery. The film eventually proved to be so influential — spawning video games and a whole “Tron”-obsessed subculture in its wake — that Disney circled back to the project for the 2010 sequel “Tron Legacy.” For Garrett Hedlund, who plays Sam Flynn, the son of software engineer Kevin (portrayed in both movies by Jeff Bridges), the latest take on the project is still an impressive spectacle that ramps up the potently mind-scrambling imagery. Hedlund revealed his thoughts to MTV News about the seeing the final product for the first time on the blue carpet at the elaborate “Tron Legacy” premiere Saturday. “I saw it couple weeks ago when I was in Montreal, but only with a couple pals and on a smaller Technicolor screen. But even then it was an incredible experience. It’s such a high-tech adventure,” Hedlund said. “It’s undoubtedly like anything I’ve ever seen before, and I think the loss for words on it is the best part of it and I can’t wait to see it again.” Even though Hedlund has a role in bringing the digital wizardry of the franchise to a new generation — in addition to getting a high-profile, career-boosting gig from the project — he said he was most excited to see “Tron” filmmaker Steven Lisberger revel in the enduring influence of his groundbreaking movie nearly three decades later. “That’s where I’m so happy for Steven Lisberger. Something he created around 28 years ago and this wild maniacal story has come to fruition 28 years later in such an unbelievable way,” he said. “To see him walking with his family and enjoying this with all of us and being there when we’re filming with all of us and sort of being the godfather on set, I’m more proud of him in this very moment.” What are you looking forward to seeing in “Tron”? Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen Added To ‘On The Road’ Cast

Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Stewart also star in the film based on Jack Kerouac’s novel. By Adam Rosenberg Amy Adams Photo: Ethan Miller/ WireImage And the Beat goes on. Two more have joined the cast of director Walter Salles’ upcoming adaptation of the Jack Kerouac novel “On the Road,” which already counts Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Stewart among its stars. Viggo Mortensen and Amy Adams have signed on to play the husband and wife couple Old Bull Lee and Jane, according to Deadline New York . Both drug abusers, Sal (Riley) encounters the Lees later in his story and, for all their faults, sees in them the sort of connection that he is looking for in his own sought-after relationship. For those who are unfamiliar with the novel’s background, Kerouac’s writings are a largely autobiographical account of his journeys around the country, though specific names have been changed. Old Bull Lee and his wife, Jane, are believed to be noted author William S. Burroughs and his common-law wife Joan Vollmer. Burroughs accidentally shot and killed Vollmer in 1951, an incident he initially said stemmed from a William Tell act gone wrong. Adams will next appear in David O. Russell’s “The Fighter” alongside Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. And “On the Road” isn’t her only project with a connection to counterculture: “Twilight” producer Wyck Godfrey revealed a few weeks ago that she is also attached to star in a Janis Joplin biopic. For Mortensen, this marks the second “Road” movie in a short period of time. He starred opposite Kodi Smit-McPhee (“Let Me In”) in last year’s adaptation of the post-apocalyptic Cormac McCarthy novel “The Road.” He’ll next star with Michael Fassbender and Keira Knightley in director David Cronenberg’s “A Dangerous Method” as the famed psychotherapist Sigmund Freud. Kristen Stewart Reveals Why She Dyed Her Hair ‘Reddish Brown’

‘Eclipse’ star tells MTV News she’s sporting lighter hair for her role in the novel-turned-film ‘On the Road.’ By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: Getty Images Kristen Stewart is used to all sorts of different hairstyles, having changed her hairdo drastically for her turn as Joan Jett in “The Runaways” opposite Dakota Fanning. But for her latest hair change, Stewart is going in the opposite direction from her “Runaways” style, looking instead for something brighter as she heads out “On the Road.” “It’s kind of blond right now. Like, reddish brown. I’m doing it for ‘On the Road,’ ” she told MTV News on the red carpet for a special screening of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” in New York on Monday night (June 28). Stewart is taking a break from the supernatural world of “Twilight” for “On the Road,” based on the acclaimed 1957 novel from writer Jack Kerouac. The story follows Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a youth who sets off on a cross-country road trip and meets a variety of notable characters, including the charismatic but deeply flawed Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund). Stewart will play Marylou, the on-again, off-again wife to Hedlund’s character. “Twilight” fans aren’t likely to get as passionate about Stewart’s fictional relationship with Hedlund as they are in taking sides between Team Edward and Team Jacob, but Stewart herself said she’s quite impressed with Hedlund as an actor. “I’ve met him a bunch of times, and I’ve hung out with him twice,” she said of her co-star. “He’s a great guy. … He’s written crazy stuff for it. He’s super into it. Not to sound … I don’t know how to put it. He’s, like, so in character, and he’s driving to Montreal. He’s awesome. I’m really, really excited.” Stewart, Hedlund and Riley join actress Kirsten Dunst in the cast for “On the Road.” The film will be directed by Walter Salles and executive-produced by Francis Ford Coppola. Kristen Stewart To Shoot ‘On The Road’ In August

Jack Kerouac adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund will be filmed in Montreal, New Orleans and Mexico. By Eric Ditzian Kristen Stewart Photo: Steve Granitz/ WireImage/ Getty Images Kristen Stewart’s summer will be anything but relaxing. The 20-year-old actress is about to jump into globe-trotting publicity mode as the June 30 release of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” draws near. Now, her August is fully booked as well: KStew is set to being filming “On the Road” early that month in Montreal. According to the Montreal Gazette, the film will begin shooting on August 2 in Quebec’s largest city. Producers have already set up an office at Cite du Cinema, the city’s largest film production facility. After filming there for most of August, the shoot will shift to New Orleans for a month, then head to Mexico for a few weeks and finally return to Montreal before wrapping. Adapted from the iconic 1957 Beat generation novel by Jack Kerouac, “On the Road” stars Garrett Hedlund (“Tron Legacy”) as Dean Moriarty, the disaffected drifter at the center of the story. Stewart will play Marylou, Dean’s wife. Filling out the rest of the cast are Kirsten Dunst and British actor Sam Riley (“Control”). Francis Ford Coppola is producing, and Walter Salles (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) will direct. “I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever,” Stewart said earlier this month. “Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in ‘On the Road.’ So that’s a big deal.” The shoot should end well in advance of the start of “Breaking Dawn” filming this fall. The fourth film in the “Twilight” franchise will hit theaters on November 18, 2011. Do you think “On the Road” will make a good movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.
