Kristen Stewart Is An ‘Incredible’ Cook, Garrett Hedlund Says

‘She’s honed it,’ he tells MTV News of his ‘On the Road’ co-star’s tortilla soup. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News Kristen Stewart loves to cook, and it seems that her co-stars love to try her creations. When MTV News caught up with “Country Strong” and “On the Road” star Garrett Hedlund, he only had the nicest things to say about Stewart’s culinary abilities. “You got to try the tortilla soup!” he raved. “It’s incredible. She’s honed it.” Back in October, Stewart opened up about cooking for Hedlund and the rest of the “On the Road” cast, noting that her best dish was the tortilla soup. “I didn’t bake; I cooked a lot, though. I was the only girl on set,” she said. “I think I can do a really, really good, terrific tortilla soup. That was my ‘On the Road’ dish.” Stewart has also thrown big bashes for her pals, proving that her cooking goes far beyond just soup. “I get really embarrassed when people ask me what I cook, for some reason,” she recalled of a dinner party she threw last year. “I shouldn’t say that I cook anymore. There was like a big BBQ situation and, like, a bunch of steaks and veggies, and I made chicken piccata. I’m so embarrassed right now. But I made homemade marinara sauce starting at, like, 2 in the afternoon. It wasn’t done until 8. It was incredible. The ‘Twilight’ cast showed up.” In the past, Taylor Lautner revealed some of Stewart’s other delicious dishes . “Like, OK, you know kumquats?” he asked. “There’s apparently a fruit called loquats. Yeah, I didn’t know either. And she made a loquat pie.” With all this talk about Stewart’s cooking abilities, does Hedlund have any skills in the kitchen? “I’m pretty much a klutz in the kitchen. I go through waves,” he said. “Sometimes I just depend on pots and pans and cook up out of convenience, and sometimes I can’t even find a fork.” Check out everything we’ve got on “On the Road.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Country Strong’ Star Garrett Hedlund Recalls His Country-Music Roots

‘[Co-star] Tim McGraw and the other great country stars filled the airwaves,’ he tells MTV News about growing up on a farm. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News Garrett Hedlund really is just a small-town guy at the end of the day. So when he hit the set of “Country Strong,” which opened Friday (January 7), he embraced his Minnesota farm boy beginnings and his early love of country music. In the flick he plays Beau Hutton, a young country music songwriter who plays a pivotal role in the life of former country star Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow), as she tries to reclaim her country throne. Beau also falls for a country singer newbie named Chiles, who’s played by “Gossip Girl” star Leighton Meester. “I mean, country, it was the only thing we listened to on the farm with the one radio station,” Hedlund recalled to MTV News about his childhood. “You try to veer from it and you to go to rock and then to rap, and then country on this film kind of pulled me back home.” Hedlund explained that his folkie roots helped him to relate better to his character. “And [with] ‘Country Strong,’ growing up on a farm, [my co-star] Tim McGraw and the other great country stars filled the airwaves around our house,” he told the Orlando Sentinel. “Our only radio station played only country music,” he said. Post-“Country Strong,” Hedlund said he’s fully embracing his Nashville-loving roots. “And now I’m solely country music once again,” he explained. “Driving in L.A. and everything’s a little tenacious; it can get a little intense.” While country music fans might expect 26-year-old Hedlund to cite some contemporary artists as favorites, the “Tron” star told MTV News singers like Taylor Swift and Keith Urban weren’t primary influences for him on “Country Strong.” “I love old-school [artists like] Townes Van Zandt, a lot of the great singer/songwriters that have a lot of these great lyrics and these great stories and beautiful, sad stories.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Country Strong.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Garrett Hedlund Channels Miley Cyrus, Smokes Up on the Street

Our above headline is possibly a little unfair to Miley Cyrus, but when actor Garrett Hedlund is seen on video smoking an unconventional-looking cigarette, which he INSISTS is not weed, on the street in Montreal, then, well … The video was shot in August, when Hedlund – who also stars in Tron: Legacy and Country Strong – was filming On The Road with Kristen Stewart. Garrett Hedlund Smokes Up As you can see, Hedlund pulls a lighter and a “cigarette” out of his pocket, lights it, takes two drags and passes it to some girl who happily partakes. It could be any number of legal substances, yes, but you have to wonder … and it’s hard not to draw comparisons to the Miley Cyrus bong video . Hedlund’s rep did not default to salvia, but told TMZ it was surely NOT marijuana, adding, “He would never smoke pot in front of all the paparazzi.” What do you think? We can already hear Mila Kunis’ take … totally weed !

‘Tron Legacy’ Star Olivia Wilde Talks Sequel Plans

Actress who plays Quorra hints Cillian Murphy’s character will return. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund in “Tron Legacy” Photo: Disney We’ve long known that Disney has been positioning “Tron Legacy” as the first installment in a revamped take on the dude-gets-sucked-into-a-computer concept the studio pioneered in the early 1980s. Back in April, eight months before the new film was set to hit theaters, news broke that a script for another film already was in the works. ” ‘Legacy’ definitely ends in a way that there are opportunities to continue the story,” producer Justin Springer told MTV News at the time. Now that “Legacy” has hit the multiplex and the public at large has gotten a chance to see the fresh take on “Tron,” the question becomes: Where will the story go from here? We recently asked Olivia Wilde, who plays the digital creature Quorra. Beware of major spoilers below! As we find out at the end of the film, Quorra departs the computer world and materializes as a human being in the real world for the very first time. Wilde told us that if a sequel kicks into gear, fans should expect the story to mine her fish-out-of-mainframe tale. “I’m so thrilled to play with Quorra in the human world. It would be sort of like ‘Splash,’ ” she said, referring to the ’80s comedy starring Daryl Hannah as a mermaid unleashed in Manhattan. “I want to see her whispering to laptops and hugging toasters. … There’s a whole other chapter ahead.” Fans should also stay tuned for further development of Cillian Murphy’s character. Murphy plays Edward Dillinger, a rising star at ENCOM, the tech company at the center of the franchise’s mythology, and the son of one of the first film’s key villains. Murphy shows up in just one scene in “Legacy,” but his role is likely to expand in the future. “Cillian Murphy we were so lucky to have in this film. His part in ‘Tron Legacy’ is so mysterious and cool,” Wilde said. “His role really fits into the mythology of ‘Tron,’ the corrupt environment of ENCOM. It just shows you that this fight is far from over.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘Tron: Legacy’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics call Disney’s reboot/sequel a ‘catchy popcorn pleasure’ that is ‘destined to split audiences.’ By Eric Ditzian “Tron Legacy” Photo: Disney It’s been a good year for studios that waited three decades to update old-school flicks. In April, Warner Bros. gave 1981’s “Clash of the Titans” a coat of CGI splendor and ended up with a film that grossed almost $500 million worldwide. Can Disney, which has resurrected 1982’s computer-world-based adventure film “Tron” for a new generation, mirror the success of “Clash”? At this point, at least, “Tron: Legacy” is receiving far kinder reviews than “Clash.” That doesn’t mean, of course, that “Tron” can top the $61 million domestic opening of the latter. Disney’s 3-D film is predicted to land somewhere in the $40-45 million range. Will it defy expectations? Will positive word of mouth spread? Is the movie worth a trip to the theater on opening weekend? Check out what the critics are saying about “Tron: Legacy” and decide for yourself. The Story “Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the son of video game developer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), is left as the uninterested heir to his father’s corporation after the elder Flynn’s disappearance 20 years earlier. Following a mysterious signal, Sam finds himself pulled into the same computer world that has trapped his father. Reunited, the Flynns team with a Quorra (Olivia Wilde), a cyber warrior, to defeat Clu, a program left in charge of the Grid whose rise to power puts both the computer world — and our world — in danger.” — Silas Lesnick, ComingSoon.net The Comparison to the Original “[T]his is one of the smartest ideas for a reboot in yonks. Where its fellow 1982 sci-fi releases, ‘E.T.’ and ‘Blade Runner,’ are still universally celebrated, ‘Tron’ ‘s visuals and ponderous tone have aged as badly as Manic Miner. The concept at the Disney film’s core, however, remains beautifully simple: What if a man got sucked into a computer? That notion, revisited with today’s turbo-boosted VFX technology, has now given Mickey Mouse a stonking tentpole. And make no mistake, ‘Tron Legacy’ — part sequel, part remake — is a proper event movie, complete with nattily digitized Cinderella’s Castle at the start, a journey to a fully realized alien world and the best 3D since ‘Avatar.’ ” — Nick de Semlyen, Empire The Effects “The FX in ‘Tron: Legacy’ have an almost Einsteinian elegance: They infuse light with gravity. If one of the discs hits a combatant, he’ll shatter into glassy fragments, and Sam, absorbing the physics of the game, must learn to treat his body almost as part of the surrounding architecture. He becomes a ruthless digital specter. As long as it’s engaged in light-hurling bouts of force, or motorcycle chases through a landscape so ominously enveloping it looks like ‘Blade Runner’ after gentrification, ‘Tron: Legacy’ is a catchy popcorn pleasure.” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The Dissenters “This is one of those big-budget projects destined to split audiences (a good thing, always). Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who did the ‘Halo’ and ‘Gears of War’ commercials, ‘Tron: Legacy’ comes to life when Sam, played by a too-cool-for-school Garrett Hedlund, learns the ways of the Lightcycles and the perilous joys of racing on ‘ribbons of light.’ Here, we get the sweep and simple excitement we need. Elsewhere, we get exposition more sluggish than the stuff we had to wade through in the second and third ‘Matrix’ movies, and a strained, opaque brand of intellectual-property mythology that might mean tons to ardent fans of the first ‘Tron,’ but less to others.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Final Word ” ‘Tron: Legacy’ is a surprising film for many reasons, not the least of which being that it contains more substance than is easily explored — if also to some extent, articulated — in just one viewing. And perhaps it might seem like a pre-emptive defense against logical or narrative shortcomings to make one of its central themes the idea that perfection, as we can imagine it, is ultimately unknowable. But it’s a point that’s well-taken, and if I have to endure the kind of imperfection that produces a film like ‘Tron: Legacy,’ which is interesting, inspiring and for better or worse, simply incomparable, then it’s worth it.” – Todd Gilchrist, Cinematical Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron: Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Kristen Stewart Is ‘Incredible’ In ‘On The Road,’ Garrett Hedlund Says

‘Everyone is going to get to see how hard a worker she is,’ he tells MTV News of KStew. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Garrett Hedlund Photo: MTV News While Garrett Hedlund isn’t exactly a household name yet, filmgoers will soon be very familiar with him via his two new projects “Tron Legacy” and “Country Strong,” not to mention the upcoming “On the Road” film. When MTV News caught up with the busy man recently, we asked him about the recent uptick in his career — beginning with landing that coveted role in “On the Road.” “It’s the hardest I’ve ever had to work, which is a very good sign,” Hedlund said about the big-screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s tour-de-beatnik classic. “It’s the greatest experience of my lifetime — well, these last couple years have [been]. All these mean so much to me ,with ‘Tron Legacy’ and the world getting to see [‘Tron’ director] Joseph Kosinski for the first time, who I feel is the next great visionary genius,” he said. “For ‘Country Strong,’ I worked six months on the guitar to get that down and to play a country singer with Gwyneth [Paltrow] and that gets to showcase Shana Feste’s incredible talents as a writer/director, because she’s just miraculous. “Now with ‘On the Road,’ getting to work with Walter Salles, who I owe such a tremendous amount to because he gives me so much,” he explained of the “Motorcycle Diaries” director. “He fulfills me with so much other people haven’t been able to do, and he does it so simply.” Hedlund went on to say that “Road” will be full color not black-and-white, which had been rumored, and he called the experience, fittingly, “a long journey.” Regarding Kristen Stewart, Hedlund had nothing but the highest compliments to pay his co-star. “[She is] incredible, and in this, everyone is going to get to see how hard a worker she is, the devotion that she puts into her work,” Hedlund enthused. “And her performance is going to be exposed highly in this.” Hedlund added that the entire cast is packed with talent. “Everybody, Sam Riley is phenomenal, we’ve had a lot of wonderful surprises in having people like Viggo Mortenson, Amy Adams, Elisabeth Moss join us,” he said. “Most recently, Steve Buscemi and Terrence Howard. Alice Braga, it’s been phenomenal, it’s been quite the family.” Are you excited to see “On the Road”? Tell us in the comments!
