Kristen Stewart’s ‘On The Road’ Trailer: Five Keys Scenes

Stewart bids a topless farewell to her days as Bella Swan in the celebrity-studded clip. By Kevin P. Sullivan Kristen Stewart in the “On the Road” trailer Photo: MK2 Productions The trailer for “On the Road,” an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s seminal beat generation novel, finally hit the Web and brought the cool of 1960s America with it. We saw Kristen Stewart shake it and roll one up. Garrett Hedlund talks about the dumb stuff that he does and can’t explain, and Sam Riley sounds disturbingly like Heath Ledger’s Joker. Here are our five key scenes from the “One the Road” trailer. KStew Rolls Deep This is not the Bella Swan you know. This is Marylou, the 16-year-old, reefer-smoking chick that Dean Moriarty (Hedlund) just married. We’re not sure if there could have been a more striking image to let us know that Kristen Stewart has left Forks, Washington, far behind her. A Breezy Drive Let’s take that last part back for one second. If we needed a clearer image that Stewart is removing the mantle of Bella Swan for her future career, we have what looks like a shot of the actress removing something else in the front seat with Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley: her top. We’ve seen Stewart with an edge in several of her other films, but for “On the Road,” she seems to be bidding “Twilight” adieu in style. The Freakout As a key work of the beat generation, what would a film adaptation of “On the Road” be without a good old-fashioned drug freak-out dance? Here we see Hedlund tripping out and getting his freak on. It’s rare that we see such a loose Hedlund, and the scene gives a good idea of the kind of shenanigans Dean will be up to.

Justin Timberlake Is ‘Perfect’ In Coen Brothers Flick

‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ actor Oscar Isaac has been recording music with Timberlake for the ’60s folk flick. By Jocelyn Vena “W.E.” star Oscar Isaac is deep in musical preparations for the next Coen Brothers film, “Inside Llewyn Davis,” in which he’ll play the title character. In a couple weeks, Isaac and his castmates, including Justin Timberlake , Carey Mulligan and Garrett Hedlund, will be on set, but until then they are in the recording studio putting the finishing touches on the film’s musical elements. “Right now I’m gearing up for the Coen Brothers film, which is all music based,” he told MTV News at the New York premiere of the Madonna-directed “W.E.” “So that’s actually taking up a lot of the musical creative energy. So excited.” Isaac, much like his co-stars, has dabbled in music, having put off recording his own music to focus on the film. And with some assistance from some big-name musical heavyweights, the music is destined to shine. The actor said the cast is currently in the studio with Timberlake, the Punch Brothers, T-Bone Burnett and Mulligan’s fianc

Justin Bieber Has ‘It,’ Mark Wahlberg Says

‘I’m pretty intuitive,’ actor tells MTV News about why he wanted to work with the pop star on an upcoming basketball-themed drama. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mark Wahlberg Photo: MTV News Mark Wahlberg surprised movie fans everywhere when he announced plans to hook up with Justin Bieber on the big screen. But when MTV News caught up with the “Contraband” star recently, he explained why he wanted to work with the teen phenom on the basketball-themed drama. “Intuition. I’m pretty intuitive,” he said of why he thinks shooting a film with the pop star is the right choice. “I see the guy and spent time with him, and you see what he does and how he does it, and then you actually have a conversation with him, and it’s there.” Of course, if it doesn’t come easily to the rookie actor, Wahlberg has a backup plan: “It’s there — and if not, I will extract it.” When MTV News caught up with Wahlberg and Bieber earlier this year at the MTV Movie Awards, they opened up a bit more about the in-the-works flick. “Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of, like, ‘The Color of Money,’ ” Wahlberg said of his “old guy” role. “So I get this call from Paramount [with a story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ I’m like, ‘For what?’ ” he further recalled. “They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’ ” Bieber, who previously appeared on the big screen in his 3-D concert flick “Never Say Never,” said he hopes to be on a film set by sometime next summer. And while he kept his plans hush-hush, he added that his team is “working on the script.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Country Strong, Final Destination and Other Noteworthy Surprises of 2011

Surprises too are often tied to expectation, or lack of it. The first film I saw in 2011 surprised me in part because it was the first film I saw in 2011 — that is, a film shunted onto the whistling heath of the January release schedule. It was Shana Feste’s Country Strong , and it got a raw deal. Casting Gwyneth Paltrow as a country superstar is either a brave decision or an incredibly timid one — regardless, Paltrow stepped into an outsized role and very nearly filled it out. The supporting cast of Leighton Meester, Tim McGraw, and especially Garrett Hedlund give the celebrity melodrama human ballast, and Feste manages to pace a pretty slick story with moments of believable intimacy and alienation. When it comes to horror films and especially on-screen gore (I suppose off-screen gore as well), I am — as Justin Timberlake’s character pronounced it in the reasonably surprising Friends With Benefits — a huge pu-ssay. Seeing Final Destination 5 next to my name on the assignment slate was a definite short straw situation, but I fancy myself a professional, and so cleared my schedule and my appetite and headed to midtown. I had never seen a Final Destination , which accounted for the formula’s novelty for me — the villain here is death itself, manifested in the trickle down economics of excruciating coincidence — but the film, shot in 3-D, is also brilliantly choreographed and possessed of the kind of tension — outrageous but not totally gratuitous — that directors rarely bother with anymore, when splatters and shakey cams do just as well. Not that there aren’t — heaven knows — plenty of guts a-squishin’ in Final Destination 5 . But it was worth a few pounds of flesh to be reminded how pleasurable it is to be both really and truly scared and perfectly safe in a crowded movie theater. So a quick check-in on the Friends alumni: Most promising cast member Jennifer Aniston seems resigned to debasing herself in Adam Sandler shitshows like Just Go With It ; Matthew Perry, always rebounding in my heart, is as ever poised for a comeback; Lisa Kudrow keeps launching hothouse comic series that feel too cringey to last; Courtney Cox has a network show and yet seems to spend her days fastened to a mirror; Matt LeBlanc came up with something interesting in the meta-TV cable series Episodes ; and David Schwimmer pretty much killed it directing his second feature film, the internet predator drama Trust . Clive Owen gives a powerful and difficult performance as a father reckoning with his daughter’s role in her own victimization and Liana Liberato makes a frankly astonishing debut as a young girl drawn into the emotional confusions of abuse. In deploying real emotional toughness against easy accusations of after-school special-dom, it is Schwimmer who emerges as the mature and still-promising talent. I was surprised, anyway. Though it’s not strictly movie-centric, I feel compelled to note one of the most pleasant surprises of my favorite new television series — the venue, after all, to which so many of our movie stars have migrated. Luke Wilson hit an inexplicable rough patch in the late aughts, his endearing, chronically bedazzled comic presence and magma-deep melancholy wasted on minnow-ish indies like Middle Men and I Melt With You director Mark Pellington’s Henry Poole Was Here . And then his disheartening appearance in the ads that cannot be named. But in playing the innocuous waster Levi Callow in Mike White’s HBO series Enlightened , Wilson seems to have not only returned to form but raised his game. White cast the role perfectly, and dispenses the character of Levi in precise and exact-right doses: Initially seen through the warped lens of Laura Dern’s Amy — a recent inductee into the narcissistic cult of well being — he emerges as more than a pathetic fallback and projection screen for his ex. In the exquisite Robin Wright episode, by making Levi’s exasperation his own White brings Amy’s desperation into clearer view. In a later confrontation with Amy’s mother (Diane Ladd) Levi is finally unleashed as a whole, seething person. Wilson makes what might be an ordinary role feel risky, and in his fringy yet essential presence sets up the question of whether Levi is a poignant satellite in Amy’s orbit or she is a moon to his Melancholia. I’m really happy to be watching Luke Wilson again, is mostly what I’m saying — on any screen. Happy and a little bit relieved. Follow Michelle Orange on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Justin Bieber, Mark Wahlberg Open Up About Basketball Flick

‘It’s going to be crazy,’ Bieber promises at MTV Movie Awards. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Justin Bieber Photo: MTV News It seems that things are well under way for the basketball movie starring Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber . How do we know? Well, the guys themselves updated us this weekend at two of the biggest events of the summer. Wahlberg told MTV News on Saturday night at Spike’s Guys Choice Awards that while he thought he’d be playing Bieber’s part initially, he eventually came around to playing the “old guy” role. “Wait till you see me and Bieber in the flick. Think of like ‘The Color of Money,’ ” he teased. “So I get this call from Paramount [where they tell me about the story about] an old guy and a young guy. I’m like, ‘Cool, let’s get Jack [Nicholson]. Let’s get Robert De Niro. Let’s get Robert Duvall.’ And they go, ‘What about Garrett Hedlund?’ “I’m like, ‘For what?’ ” he further recalled. “They’re like, ‘For the young guy.’ ” (Check out photos of Justin Bieber and tons of other stars backstage at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards!) The next day, at the MTV Movie Awards, Justin Bieber seemed equally excited about the project, if not a bit tight-lipped. “I know ,” he promised. “You’ll have to see. I can’t really reveal too much about it.” According to previous reports, Wahlberg has been keeping tabs on the young star. “He loves the idea,” Wahlberg said last month. “He’s been sending me video, he sent me a video of himself, and, yeah, I think he’s really talented.” The idea was sparked after Wahlberg and partner Stephen Levinson caught Bieber playing basketball in February during a celebrity game held during NBA All-Star Game weekend . Jeremy Renner Cast In ‘The Bourne Legacy’

Film is not set to include Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne. By Kara Warner Jeremy Renner Photo: Getty Images After months of speculation, Universal has officially named actor Jeremy Renner as the star of “The Bourne Legacy.” According to Deadline , the two-time Oscar nominee (for “The Hurt Locker” and “The Town”) is expected to “sign on quickly” to play a new character in the spin-off film written and directed by “Bourne” screenwriter Tony Gilroy. Renner will reportedly play an operative from a covert government program that is even more dangerous than the Treadstone brainwashing program that hatched Jason Bourne, memorably played by Matt Damon in the first three hit films. For those who have been following the ups and downs of the “Bourne” saga, Renner’s casting is not at all a surprise, given reports that leaked earlier this month saying he had been offered the role. The actor beat out a slew of talented and buzzworthy contenders, which reportedly included Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch, Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund and Luke Evans. Gilroy has previously stated that although Damon’s Bourne will not be a part of “Legacy,” he has left the door open for future Bourne-centric films down the road. “The easiest way to think of it is an expansion or a reveal,” Gilroy said of his story for “Legacy.” “Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he’s very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I’m building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy. … The world we’re making enhances and advances and invites Jason Bourne’s return [down the road].” Production is said to begin in September. First Look at Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund in On the Road

Kristen Stewart has caught a lot of flack on the Internet lately, but that doesn’t mean Hollywood casting directors aren’t falling over themselves to meet with her for various high-profile projects. That might ruffle some feathers ( sorry, fanboys !), but to Stewart’s credit, she has been quite picky with her non- Twilight selections; you wouldn’t necessarily expect a teen queen to have films like Adventureland , Welcome to the Rileys and The Runaways on her resume. Stewart continues her star-shunning assault later this year in On the Road — opposite Garrett Hedlund (as Dean Moriarty) and Sam Riley (as Sal Paradise) — and the first stills from the Walter Salles film have arrived. Click ahead for a look, ya beatnik.
