Sinkhole Swallows Florida House; Man Missing

A 37-year-old Florida man is missing after being swallowed by a sinkhole that appeared under his bedroom around 11 p.m. Thursday, an official said. Jeffrey Bush has not been heard from since the hole appeared in his bedroom in Seffner, Fla., near Tampa. Bush is feared to have been killed. Sinkhole in Florida Authorities have said the sinkhole, believed to be up to 30 feet deep, was “seriously unstable.” A 100-foot safety zone was set up around it Friday. Nearby homes were evacuated for fear of a sudden collapse. Jessica Damico, public relations officer for Hillsborough County Fire Department, said Saturday that experts resumed working at the site at 7 a.m. ET. “Right now they are still looking at soil samples and drilling and looking for stability, so they can find the edge of the sinkhole ,” she said from the scene. She said the sinkhole seemed to be about 15 feet deep, or perhaps even more. However she added the actual depth of unstable ground was unclear. Damico said there was still no sign of Jeffrey Bush. “If you look in, it’s about 15 feet and then there’s only sand,” she said, noting that engineers are only using camera equipment to examine the hole. The area is still too unstable for people to go onto. Bill Bracken, the owner of an engineering company called to assess the hole, said he “cannot tell you why it [the house] has not collapsed yet.” He said the earth below is a “very large, very fluid mass.” “This is not your typical sinkhole,” Hillsborough County administrator Mike Merrill added. “This is a chasm. For that reason, we’re being very deliberate.” While some in the neighborhood did not the risks, sinkholes are common in Florida; home insurers are required by law to provide coverage for them. Florida’s geological makeup increases the likelihood of sinkholes, and more than 500 have been reported in Hillsborough County since 1954. A monster 400-foot sinkhole sucked in a house, five sports cars, two businesses, and part of a swimming pool, appearing near Orlando back in 1981. “Envision a piece of Swiss cheese,” Taylor Yarkosky, a sinkhole expert from Brooksville, Fla., told the AP. “Any house in Florida could be in that situation.”

Clint Eastwood Pledges Support for Gay Marriage

He’s one of the few big-time celebrities who is also a big-time Republican. But Clint Eastwood has veered from the viewpoint of many Conservatives in one regard: the actor signed the American Foundation for Equal Rights’s “Friend of the Court” brief this week. In doing so, the actor became one of over 100 prominent Republicans to support this gay rights organization’s document, which it has filed with the Supreme Court. In April, the highest court in the land will listen to arguments about the legality of California’s Proposition 8, an amendment that passed in 2008 and which declares “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized” in that state. Those such as Eastwood have affixed their name to this brief in the hope that this gay marriage ban will be overturned. And recent poll revealed that 61 percent of CA residents would support marriage equality. Do you support it?   Support Oppose View Poll »

Bristol Palin at Center of White Powder-Based Death Threat

Bristol Palin may say a lot of controversial things – see comments, gay marriage – but it looks like the Dancing with the Stars contestant was disturbingly spot-on this week. She really is the target of death threats . TMZ confirms that a package with white powder was sent to CBS studios yesterday, along with a message that read: This is what will happen to you if Bristol Palin stays on [Dancing with the Stars]. Seriously, people can be messed up. The powder was determined to be harmless, but law enforcement officials are investigating the situation and treating it like a legitimate threat. McKayla Maroney Spoofs "Not Impressed" Meme

Give McKayla Maroney a lot of credit. The Olympic gymnast is showing a sense of humor about the Internet meme spoofing her hilariously smug, indifferent reaction to winning a mere silver – not gold – medal in individual vault competition last week. Here’s McKayla and friends getting in on the act: Her Fierce Five teammate, Aly Raisman, tweeted a pic of Maroney, Kyla Ross and herself standing outside a swimming pool and playfully sneering. Making the same expression that launched the McKayla Maroney is NOT impressed and its many classic images on Tumblr, the girls look far from thrilled. Hey, if the Dwight Howard trade doesn’t impress McKayla, how do you think she’s gonna react when the pool’s unexpectedly closed? Exactly.

Sophia Bush to Gay Marriage Opponents: Eff Yourselves!

Sophia Bush stars on Partners , a CBS sitcom that debuts next month and which focuses on the close bond between two best friends, one of whom is a homosexual. In light of that subject matter and in the wake of the recent hullabaloo over Chick-Fil-A and the comments made by CEO Don Cathy, the former One Tree Hill actress recently went off on the topic of religion, gay marriage and equal rights. And we mean OFF . “Here’s my issue,” Bush tells E! News. “It shocks me how many people come to their defense, first of all. I’m sorry, it’s 2012, if you really think it’s OK to deny anybody their basic human right of loving who they choose to love, you can go f-ck yourself, honestly. And you can print that, because I’m done. I am so over it.” She wasn’t done, either. Take in her passionate stance below and then chime in with your take on gay marriage. “Be a kind person… The reason I take issue with it is, especially in America, we are told that this is the place – give us your tired, give us your hungry, give us your poor – where anybody of any race, of any belief system, can come and have a shot at the American Dream. Have a shot at equality. Oh wait, unless your skin is a certain color, unless you have a certain sexual preference. That’s not what it says on the Statue of Liberty. We are all supposed to be equal here. “When you use God as an excuse to hate people and you use God as an excuse to cut people down, first of all, I think it’s insulting to God. And second of all, you’re missing the point. Because we’re not talking about chicken. We’re talking about the fact that every kid who reads that article, every kid who hears that said, every kid who sees a bunch of people wearing confederate flags and ‘God Hates F-gs’ T-shirts, showing up at Chick-Fil-A and eating chicken nuggets, you’re telling those kids that they don’t matter. And that they’re less important than other kids in this country. “My God loves everybody, and if yours doesn’t, that’s your prerogative, but don’t tell me how to live my life and don’t tell my best friends that you’re going to take away their rights,” Sophia concluded. “Because I will march you into the ground. I will argue you into the ground. I will petition you into the ground. I will not sleep, I will not stop, and neither will so many people in this country and in this world. It’s not right.” WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON BUSH’S STANCE?

Conservative Group Labels NBC Sitcom as "Damaging to Our Culture"

There are television shows about families with 19 kids. And television shows about teenage mothers. There’s even one that features strange addictions such as eating laundry detergent. Yet One Million Moms – a conservative group that went after JC Penney after it hired Ellen DeGeneres as a spokesperson – believes an upcoming NBC sitcom titled The New Normal is “attempting to desensitize America and our children” because it centers on a gay couple and a surrogate.
