REVIEW: Emotions Get the Better of 8: The Mormon Proposition

Scheduled to be released on the second anniversary of California’s legislation of gay marriage, 8: The Mormon Proposition marks the occasion with a furious requiem. Mournful and righteous in its retracing of the months between the bill’s passage and election night in November 2008, the film assembles a damning case against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS), which spearheaded a massive campaign to revoke gay marriage rights. Directors Reed Cowan and Steven Greenstreet make their agenda clear from the first frames, which depict a Mormon “prophet” calmly denouncing gay marriage in extreme close-up, his face distorted with scary, Poltergeist -style pixilation. The opening impression — that the LDS acted villainously with regard to Prop 8 — will soon be supported by a raft of facts; that the Mormon church couldn’t have done it alone is a complication the film sidesteps almost completely.

Did Texas’ Gay Marriage Ban Accidentally Ban Straight Marriage, Too?

A Houston lawyer says her state made a “massive mistake” in their Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage (you know, the one that was supposed to protect straight marriage) and now everyone in Texas is divorced. McClatchy reports that Barbara Ann Radnofsky is a Democratic candidate for attorney general who thinks Texas’ 2005 ban on gay marriage inadvertently “eliminates marriage in Texas,” every single one. The amendment, approved by the Legislature and overwhelmingly ratified by voters, declares that “marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman.” But the troublemaking phrase, as Radnofsky sees it, is Subsection B, which declares: “This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.” Uh, whoops

The National Organization for Marriage today posted this warning to NY state senators in advance of tomorrow’s possible vote on marriage equality: Following up on its successful campaign to defeat Dede Scozzafava in NY-23, The National Organization for Marriage’s (NOM) Executive Director Brian Brown announced plans to build a $500,000 war chest to fund a primary challenge to any Republican senator who votes for gay marriage – regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s vote in the State Senate. “There is no Republican Senate district in New York where the majority of people support gay marriage. Maine has made that very clear,” said Brian Brown.
