Why Can’t Media Acknowledge That Rolling Stone Is On the Radical Left?

One of the more annoying tics in the current bubble of national media coverage of Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s truly bizarre granting of access to Rolling Stone magazine was the utter lack of any description of the magazine — neither its ideology (hard-left) or its central focus (rock and pop music). Washington Post media reporter Howard Kurtz provided a little depth with an article on Thursday, which began: In the summer of 2008, Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner ended an interview with Barack Obama — whose campaign he financially supported — by saying, “Good luck. We are following you daily with great hope and admiration.” So Kurtz pronounced it “surprising” when the magazine was “assailing Obama from the left.” But in fact, we pointed out in February 2008 that venomous Rolling Stone political writer Matt Taibbi was trashing both Obama and Hillary Clinton as “superficial, posturing conservatives.” So why couldn’t reporters acknowledge this was a left-wing, anti-war magazine? Wouldn’t that color how people saw a “Runaway General” controversy? Surely, if Gen. McChrystal had given this kind of interview to The Washington Times, the result might have been the same, but it’s very likely the word “conservative” would have been routinely attached, unlike in this case. Reporters also would have pondered if there was some sort of conservative agenda at work, which they didn’t seem to ponder in this case. (Does Rolling Stone want to win in Afghanistan? Or withdraw immediately?) Kurtz was also rare in noticing “the cover of the current issue is devoted not to ‘The Runaway General’ but to Lady Gaga, wielding a pair of automatic weapons attached to her bra.” But the media’s treating Rolling Stone like it was a prestigious academic journal on military policy, not the place where you see if Miley Cyrus drew three stars for her latest CD.  Kurtz mentioned Taibbi’s “angry, profanity-laced pieces follow in the footsteps of Hunter Thompson.” He didn’t reprise some of Taibbi’s more colorful conservative woman-trashing rants for the magazine, such as graphically describing Michelle Malkin “teabagging,” or calling Ann Coulter a “skanky b—h whore.” You would think the press might remember Taibbi’s infamous rants in the alternative New York Press, especially that one in 2003 where he wrote “The entire White House press corps should be herded into a cargo plane, flown to an altitude of 30,000 feet, and pushed out, kicking and screaming, over the North Atlantic.” Here’s more of Kurtz: Taibbi says he lost friends in the administration after a December piece headlined “Obama’s Big Sellout,” in which he questioned whether the president is “the vacillating, ineffectual servant of banking interests.” In March, just before the health care bill passed, Taibbi wrote that Obama “did everything wrong,” along with “his team of two-faced creeps like Rahm Emanuel. . . . willing to sell out every inch of the body politic to the pharmaceutical and insurance industries.” These were surely more surprising pieces for the magazine than Sean Wilentz’s 2006 cover story on George W. Bush, titled “The Worst President in History?” Conservative columnist Jonah Goldberg once wrote that “Rolling Stone has essentially become the house organ of the Democratic National Committee.” So it’s worth noting that the magazine — which Wenner says has a “mission” to promote “social justice” — is assailing Obama from the left. Wenner says he is “disappointed” by much of Obama’s White House record and “disturbed that some pattern is emerging. It’s naive to think you’re going to change American policy by compromising on a lot of stuff.” He says Interior Secretary Ken Salazar should have been fired over the BP debacle and that the administration’s financial regulation bill “gets weaker and weaker” over time. Wenner says he is still “rooting” for Obama but hasn’t been invited to the White House: “I’m not part of the gentleman’s club.”

Ne-Yo Single ‘Beautiful Monster’ Debuts

The singer blends R&B pleasure with electro on new track from upcoming Libra Scale. By Jayson Rodriguez Ne-Yo Photo: Cody Smyth He promised something “a little different” for his next effort. Now, Ne-Yo has somewhat delivered on the vow he made when he spoke to MTV News earlier this year. The Grammy-winning singer’s new single, “Beautiful Monster,” from his forthcoming Libra Scale, arrived online on MySpace Music on Tuesday (May 25). Ne-Yo and producers Stargate have created another electro/Euro blend of R&B pleasure with the number. “She’s a monster, beautiful monster/ Beautiful monster, but I don’t mind,” Ne-Yo sings on the song’s chorus. “And I need her, said I need her/ Beautiful monster, but I don’t mind/ No, I don’t mind.” “Just know I’m doing something a little different this time around,” the singer explained back in March about his upcoming Libra. “Just be expecting that we’re gonna bring back entertainment — that’s what we’re gonna do. Yes, I’ve decided to make it the lifetime of the gentleman.” Ne-Yo was referring to his last album, Year of the Gentleman, the Rat Pack-inspired collection that spawned the hits “Closer,” “Single,” “Mad” and “Miss Independent.” The set debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and earned the Def Jam superstar a slew of Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. For his follow-up, Ne-Yo has been mostly hush, keeping his list of collaborators close to the vest. Since his last release, he’s worked on projects by 50 Cent and Rihanna, and flirted with the idea of forming a supergroup with Fabolous and Ryan Leslie . What do you think about Ne-Yo’s new song? Does it best “Closer”? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Ne-Yo

Mario’s Next Album To Include Electro Sounds

‘It’s incredible how house music influences R&B nowadays,’ the R&B singer says of his upcoming album. By Jayson Rodriguez Mario Photo: MTV News First, Ne-Yo found inspiration in the electro blasting throughout clubs overseas, dabbling with the sounds on his last album, Year of the Gentleman. Then Will.I.am, Kelis, and a slew of other R&B acts followed. Consider Mario the latest act hooked by house music. “The new album right now, I’m just focused on the album,” the singer told MTV News backstage at Chris Brown’s “Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action” benefit concert on Saturday. The Baltimore native explained that the genre’s grooves were just too appealing not to flirt with on his upcoming project. “Stay tuned. I just came back from Europe — it’s crazy out there,” Mario said. “I just did a DJ/ house [music] tour in Europe; I did like 10 days. It was a huge thing, like 15,000-seat venue. It was incredible to see how many people are into house music and R&B music, and how house music influences R&B nowadays. You know, [it has a] real strong presence … over there.” The collection, due this summer, according to Mario, would be his fifth album and the follow-up to last year’s set, D.N.A. That project spawned the hit “Break Up,” featuring Gucci Mane and Sean Garrett. Mario’s yet-untitled album is tentatively slated to include a guest appearance by Chris Brown, though nothing has been confirmed so far. Mario said the two crooners recently spent time together in a Los Angeles studio — though admittedly Brown was working with Keri Hilson and not him — and the pair have high hopes to get something recorded between them soon. “For the ladies,” he said with a smile. Silversun Pickups Revive The ’90s With ‘Royal We’ Video

Directed by famed photographer Matt Mahurin, clip features angsty, out-of-focus close-ups of the band and scenes of outstretched hands and skylines. By James Montgomery Silverson Pickups’ “The Royal We” Photo: Dangerbird Records You may have to take my word for it, but the 1990s were a totally insane decade. Especially when it came to music videos. It was a time when basically every artist got to do whatever they wanted when it came to making videos, no matter the cost, which meant that, sure, we got lots of super-epic “November Rain” types of clips and the occasional iconic “Smells Like Teen Spirit” kind of thing, but mostly, we got lots and lots of introspective, not-entirely-in-focus mood-pieces. Which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. I have fond memories of watching hours and hours of angsty, obtuse videos featuring shadowy dudes peering ominously off into space, or brightly lit (yet totally blurry) actors doing things that were supposed to be “deep.” White flashes were frequently used between cuts. There was usually water involved. Or spooky trees. Billowing fabrics with images projected onto them. Grainy, purposely scratched film. Symbolism. Animals running in slow motion. It was all pretty amazing, in retrospect. The reason I’m bringing all of this up isn’t to kick-start your week with a dose of nostalgia, but rather because the Silversun Pickups — a band who are frequently compared to ’90s mainstays the Smashing Pumpkins — have just unveiled their brand-new video for the song “The Royal We,” and, wow, is this thing airlifted right out of the Clinton era. Directed by famed photographer Matt Mahurin (who made a whole lot of these types of videos in the 1990s for acts like Metallica, Bush, Soundgarden and Blind Melon), “Royal We” is like a four-minute walk down memory lane. Angsty, out-of-focus close-ups of the band (or, alternately, angsty, in-focus-yet-shiftily-lit close-ups.) Blurry, brightly colored scenes of outstretched hands and skylines and dudes sprinting towards something. Bizarre, presumably symbolic shots of stuff like a torso with a crumbling tower for a head. Oh, and as an added bonus, Mahurin makes most of the footage skip and stretch, sort of like you’re watching the whole thing on a VCR (adjust the tracking, stat!). Seriously, this thing made me feel 13 again. And that’s what I like best about it. I’m guessing that the guys — and gal — in SSPU are about the same age as I am, which means they undoubtedly grew up watching the exact same videos I did … which means that this is sort of a dream come true for them. It’s exactly the same kind of video I’d make, had I the budget or wherewithal. Perhaps it will inspire a ’90s revival, and I’ll get to enjoy even more really weird videos. My inner 13-year-old can still dream, can’t he?

Wale Plays The Gentleman In ‘Diary’ Video

Rapper gets the girl in new video, which premieres on MTV Jams May 31. By Jayson Rodriguez Wale in “Pretty Girls” Photo: Interscope Wale partied and showed off his Washington, D.C., roots for his breakout video “Pretty Girls,” but in the rapper’s new clip for “Diary,” he plays more of the gentleman type. “What he wanted to do was kind of show that we, as men, when we approach a girl, we don’t always know exactly what her past was,” Rik Cordero, who helmed the shoot, told MTV News. “Whether she was angry or felt a sort of way because another dude made a mistake that we have to pay for, that was the message Wale wanted to get across in this video.” In the opening scene of “Diary,” Wale is shown passing out flyers for an event and then approaches a group of girls, going directly up to the one in whom he’s interested. The woman, though, isn’t too impressed with Wale and quickly rebuffs him, telling him she’s not really interested. “You didn’t even give me a chance,” he shoots back before she walks away. “It’s like that,” Wale adds. Through a series of flashbacks, though, viewers see what happened to the female protagonist leading up to her brief encounter with Wale. She had discovered her boyfriend was cheating on her, and after she approached him, she was confronted by his “other woman,” leading her down a path of pain and confusion. The film was shot in New York in and around Sputnik, a local bar and lounge in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood. The venue is featured prominently in the last scene, which involves a poetry night in which Wale’s last verse addresses his leading lady’s hardships. His inspirational lines, delivered in a spoken-word-like soliloquy, hang in the air as she makes her way into the club, surprised to see Wale behind the microphone onstage. “Diamonds, a girl’s best friend, is what they say, but believe me, with the right allegiance, you gonna shine anyway,” he says, as he connects eyes with her and she finally smiles back. Ne-Yo Credits ‘Chemistry’ With Rick Ross For ‘Super High’ Collaboration

‘It’s just an honor to be on the joint,’ Ne-Yo says of the single. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Kelly Marino Ne-Yo Photo: MTV News Rick Ross has scored hits with crooners John Legend (“Magnificent”) and R. Kelly (“Speedin’ “), but his latest, “Super High,” with Ne-Yo , has the potential to be his biggest success yet. The track is the pair’s second collaboration following Deeper Than Rap ‘s “Bossy Lady.” According to Ne-Yo, it was their working relationship that convinced the Boss to recruit his labelmate for “Super High,” the lead single from his forthcoming Teflon Don album. “It was a chemistry thing, so when he put this one together, he said I was one of the first people he called about it,” Ne-Yo told MTV News from the “Super High” video set . “Ross is just a cool dude. I respect his lyrical ability. There’s only a few in the game that really say something when they say something, and Ross is one of those few. So it’s just an honor to be on the joint.” The song has been added radio-station playlists across the country, including New York’s Hot 97 and Power 105. Ne-Yo is currently working on the follow-up to his last album, Year of the Gentleman, which he hopes to release this September. The project is still untitled, but the songwriter explained that the collection will consist of songs inspired by a screenplay he’s written. The Grammy winner was coy with details but said the set will be one of the best R&B albums ever heard. Do you think Rick Ross works best with Ne-Yo? Let us know in the comments! Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’ Video: Our Favorite Bystanders

The unnamed people of Dallas are almost as entertaining as the disrobing singer they’re watching. By James Montgomery Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video is marvelous for many reasons, and not just because the Princess of Nu-Soul gets naked at the end. We love the historical feel of the clip and the politically (and socially) charged nature of the whole thing, but what’s really great about it is that it holds up after repeated viewings. Mostly because it’s so fun to watch the action unfolding around Badu — the shocked expressions of passersby, the reactions of the innocent bystanders — it’s almost like a video within the video. And so, to shine a spotlight on some of her unheralded (and unwitting) co-stars, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite ancillary characters. These are the brave men and women who have captured our hearts and imaginations, whether they know it or not. It’s our salute to the unidentified citizens of Dallas, for their excellence in background acting. May they enjoy their 15 minutes. Guy in the Red Jacket (appears at 1:40 mark) : We like him because he is a gentleman, picking up Badu’s jacket (and shoes) as she discards them, then sprinting down the block in an attempt to return them to her. Perhaps realizing that he has stumbled into a music-video shoot, he eventually stops. He could be the thief she tweeted about over the weekend who ran off with her clothing. Also, he sort of resembles a blurry Namond Brice from season four of “The Wire.” WTF Dude (2:05) : Easily the most blatant Badu-gawker in the entire video, this gentleman in a gray button-down, jeans and sweet shades can hardly be blamed for a) taking a good long gander and b) being utterly perplexed by what he sees. How would you react if a multiplatinum recording artist sauntered by in the buff? The 2010 MTV Movie Awards are honoring the best mystifying moments at the cinema, and we have to say zombie Bill Murray and projectile-vomiting Megan Fox have nothing on our WTF Dude. Kid Out for a Stroll With His Grandfather (2:10) : Makes his entrance just after WTF Dude, and much like him, the kid’s not ashamed to stare. In fact, he does so twice, though Grandpa doesn’t seem to notice what’s going on. We’re not sure why he’s wearing a blue baseball cap and a matching blue shirt, but we applaud his commitment to coordination. Unless he’s a member of the Crips, which would just be weird. Mom Shielding Kids (2:53) : Kudos to this mom — in jeans and short-sleeve shirt, flanked by two young children — for not being distracted by the sight of a woman doffing her top in the middle of a busy intersection. Though her daughter attempts to sprint across the street, mom holds tight to her young one’s hand, even as she tries to process just what in the holy hell is going on. Hey, Mom, even we’re not sure at this point, and we’ve watched this video 15 times. Kevin Smith (4:05) : OK, so this isn’t actually the critic-baiting , Southwest-hating director, but any time we see a hirsute, slightly husky guy in jean shorts and a bowling shirt, we can’t help but think of Smith. Plus, he doesn’t even break stride when approached by a nearly nude Soul Queen and a camera crew, which leads us to believe that he’s probably got some on-set experience. Guy Twirling Keys (4:33) : He’s got something on a lanyard, and we love that he’s absentmindedly flailing it around just as Badu removes her bra. That’s dedication. Also, we wonder why he’s standing there. Is he on his lunch break? Perhaps waiting for the bus? These are the things that keep us awake at night. Conflicted Blond Couple (4:36): Man in striped shirt and jeans, woman in black top and jeans. While the woman immediately looks away when she sees a pedestrian with her lady lumps exposed, her man has no such discretion. We salute this woman for not applying a sharp elbow to the creepy guy’s ribs. Violence is never the answer … as Ms. Badu will soon discover. Ne-Yo ‘Doing Something A Little Different’ On Next Album

‘Just be expecting that were gonna bring back entertainment,’ he says. By Jocelyn Vena Ne-Yo Photo: MTV News In 2008, Ne-Yo declared it was the Year of the Gentleman and later spawned hits like “Closer” and “Miss Independent.” In the time since the album’s release, he’s worked with Rihanna in the studio to craft her album Rated R and tried his hand at a Hollywood career in the upcoming action flick “Battle: Los Angeles.” Now Ne-Yo is ready to hit the studio again to work on a new solo effort. “I am, yes,” he confirmed to MTV News. “I wish I could [tell you more details] — I can’t, unfortunately. If I tell you, I’m gonna give it away and then it’s not going to be the surprise that I want it to be. I can’t show you your gift before Christmas.” And although he wasn’t willing to name names, Ne-Yo did hint at some collaborations he was hoping to make happen. “Perhaps, maybe … no! No,” he said when asked if he could give is some specific details. “Just know I’m doing something a little different this time around. Just be expecting that were gonna bring back entertainment — that’s what were gonna do. Yes, I’ve decided to make it the lifetime of the gentleman.” Ne-Yo has also been keeping his fans in the loop on his recording process via his Twitter page , where he shared he’ll be heading to Atlanta to record the album. “Back in the US! Busy week this week and Friday I start recording the new album!” he tweeted earlier this week. “Very blessed to write on and be a part of other great projects, but nothing like working on my own album.” Related Artists Ne-Yo
