Rick Ross Talks T.I., Jadakiss, Erykah Badu Collabos

‘The time was right,’ Ross says of Tip lacing ‘Maybach Music III.’ By Shaheem Reid Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Earlier this week, Erykah Badu released a video for the remix of “Window Seat” that features Rick Ross. That collaboration led to the singer appearing on Ross’ song “Maybach Music III,” which appears on his acclaimed new album Teflon Don . “She never really collaborated with a lot of artists outside of Outkast,” Ross explained. “Maybe another artist or two, [like] the Roots. It was always conscious music she was making. You know, a gritty street artist — that’s always a plus when you get to work with somebody with the flowers around them and [they’re] burning incense. And it’s positive.” Ross was a longtime admirer of Badu’s work, which made the idea of working with her intriguing. “Her music always attracted me; it was always attractive to my kind of music,” he said. “Once we collaborated with the ‘Window Seat’ remix … the lanes of communication was open, I was like, ‘Let’s do something different.’ ” The track, which was produced by the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, also features T.I. and Jadakiss. “I felt the time was right for me and T.I. [to work together],” the Bawse explained. “We had never personally collaborated with each other on a record one on one. Early on in my career, I had said [negative] things when I didn’t know him. Just us being bosses and us being leaders and us being examples, we bossed up. We both did. He came from home doing what he did. I did my thing.” But as time passed, the animosity waned, and Ross asked Tip to collaborate. “Just on a mutual respect for each other, I reached out to him. When I got that verse back, I was like, ‘He meant that.’ We had been seeing each other over a period of time, saluting each other, bumping into each other, he knew I was a fan of his. We captured that moment in time which was one of the dopest records. And that meant the most to me. I used to play that T.I. verse in my studio, like, ‘This set the tone, right here. It set the tone.’ It just felt good for the homie to lace me. I salute Tip.” Ross brought Jadakiss, a longtime friend, on “Maybach” as well. “Jada was always that New York underdog,” he said. “That next lyricist. You could be the hottest at the time, but if you slippin’, Jada is one record away. He’s a cool dude, somebody I got a mutual respect and a friendship with.” This week, Ross released a new track online, “Summer’s Mine,” where he takes aim at his competition. “Bitch I run the south/ I’m what you wanna be,” he raps. “This how you wanna live/ This what you wanna drive/ Be honest with yourself/ I’m who you idolize.” What do you think of Ross’ “Maybach Music III”? How does it rank with the previous tracks? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Rick Ross (Hip-Hop) Erykah Badu Jadakiss T.I.

Erykah Badu Pleads Not Guilty To ‘Window Seat’ Charge

Singer was cited for disorderly conduct after stripping down in public during the video shoot. By Kelley L. Carter Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Erykah Badu entered a not-guilty plea Wednesday for stripping down in public for her much-talked-about “Window Seat” video . In March, the 39-year-old soul singer went sans clothing in Dallas’ busy Dealey Plaza during the video shoot; she later was charged with disorderly conduct in relation to the music video. “I thought it was a move for women and men and children who feel they weren’t good enough,” Erykah Badu told MTV News on April 8 about the controversial clip. ” ‘This is just me. I’m good enough.’ I felt it was important enough to do. More pros than cons.” In Badu’s video, she sheds her clothes while walking through downtown Dallas, and almost as soon as she is totally nude, she is shot in the head, falling near the same grassy knoll near where President Kennedy was shot in 1963. Instead of blood, animated words that spell out “groupthink” leak from her head on the sidewalk. The singer has said that she picked to go nude in Dealey Plaza because it’s one of the most popular locales in the city. Badu didn’t file for an official permit to shoot the video. The directors of the video, Chike and Coodie, told MTV News that they were well aware of potential attention from law-enforcement officials. They also said Badu was fully prepared for the consequences . “We had bail money and everything,” Coodie said. “I think she really wanted to get arrested and even make a bigger message.” Are you surprised that Badu pleaded not guilty? Erykah Badu Charged For Nude ‘Window Seat’ Video

Singer has been cited for disorderly conduct after a video-shoot witness filed a complaint with Dallas police. By Josh Wigler Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown R&B singer Erykah Badu is learning the hard way that the naked truth isn’t always such a good thing. Having made headlines throughout the past week for shooting a music video for “Window Seat” while completely in the buff, Badu has been charged with disorderly conduct after police officers in Dallas received a formal complaint over the nude shoot, TMZ reported Friday (April 2). According to the site, a Texas woman filed an indecency complaint with police officials after she and her mother witnessed Badu shooting the guerrilla-style video completely naked. Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot Dallas Police Department Senior Corporal Janice Crowther spoke with MTV News earlier this week and revealed that Badu and her colleagues did not file an official permit requesting to shoot the “Window Seat” music video, which filmed near the same spot where President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dealey Plaza in 1963. “They definitely did not get a permit,” Crowther said. “To shoot that video, they would have had to get a special-events permit from the events office, and it would have had to specify what type of filming they were doing, what subjects they would use and any traffic control they would need.” Indeed, directors Coodie and Chike of Creative Control revealed to MTV News that they did not seek out permits for the shoot and were well aware of potential attention from law-enforcement officials. Chike said Badu was fully prepared for the consequences. “We had bail money and everything,” Coodie said. “I think she really wanted to get arrested and even make a bigger message.” Do you think Badu should have been charged for her video shoot? Erykah Badu: Defends Her Controversial Music Video

Erykah Badu says that many have totally misinterpreted her new music video, wherein she strips off her clothes and references the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy. She released as statement in her Tweeter account that she would never disrespect John F. Kennedy. In fact, she is inspired by the former president’s revolutionary thinking. Many people have grossly misinterpreted her performance. The video of her song “Window Seat” has been pulled out from several sites, in which she was slowly taking-off each of her clothes as she was walking along a sidewalk in Dallas’ Dealey Plaza. This place is now a popular tourist attraction. In the video after Badu has removed all of her clothing, a shot rang out as the song ended. Then suddenly her head jerked after being shot in the head and fall to the ground. She was totally naked and fell near the site where JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963. During the filming of the music video, onlookers were so concerned for it is a public place and there were children around. Some people reacted that Badu went too far with her video. MTV’s Musical March Madness Reaches The Elite Eight

My Chemical Romance outlast 30 Seconds to Mars, in Bigger Than the Sound ‘s bracketology! By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic When historians look back on MTV News’ inaugural Musical March Madness tournament, they will undoubtedly focus on the Sweet 16 matchup between My Chemical Romance and 30 Seconds to Mars (well, either that or Linkin Park ‘s rather erroneous omission from the entire field of 65). It was, to borrow a few catchphrases, a clash of the titans, a barn-burner, a good old-fashioned slobberknocker: Two of the biggest bands on the planet — with two of the most rabid fanbases, the MCRmy and the Echelon — squaring off for a spot in the Elite Eight. It was like Duke/ North Carolina, Ohio State/ Michigan, Israel University/ Palestine Tech, only bloodier, more venomous. It was a match for the ages. Votes poured in by the bucket load. Both bands led for extended periods of time, fell behind, then surged into the lead again, thanks to some rather creative campaigning (30STM imploring fans to vote from their school’s computer labs was a genius touch,) and, perhaps fittingly, when voting closed on Tuesday night, things were tied, with each act grabbing 50 percent of the vote. So, who won? Well, in a contest where more than 50,000 ballots were cast, it came down to just 327 votes, and in the end, My Chem moved on to the Elite Eight. I’m not gonna lie, we’ll miss 30 Seconds to Mars and their fanatic, somewhat insane dedication to winning a fictional championship. But the fans have spoken, and Leto and company will have to wait until next year. So, who will be joining My Chemical Romance in the Elite Eight? You can take a look at our updated bracket here , and voting will open Wednesday afternoon (March 31) over on the Newsroom blog . Let’s get to the results. Midwest In a region highlighted by shocking upsets (#16 the Hold Steady besting #1 Nickelback, #11 Shinedown over #6 Cobra Starship), we’re left with a pretty straightforward final: second-seeded Muse versus fourth-seeded the White Stripes. Both bands handled their Sweet 16 opponents with relative ease — the Stripes thumped Patrick Stump, and Muse rallied to knock off a game AFI — but only one can advance to the Final Four. Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! The results: (4) The White Stripes def. (9) Patrick Stump, 70-30 (2) Muse def. (14) AFI, 53-47 So, once again, our final in the Midwest region is #2 Muse v. #4 the White Stripes. To be honest, I’m sort of amazed the Stripes have made it this far. I didn’t think Jack White even knew how to use a computer. West The Wild West continued to live up to its nickname, as it played host to both the MCR/30STM tilt and #14 the Young Veins vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco, a matchup that pitted former bandmates against one another. Sadly — perhaps due to Ryan Ross’ refusal to campaign on behalf of his band — Panic! rolled past the Veins, setting up a final of two bands that haven’t released much new music in recent years but whose fans don’t seem to mind. The results: (5) My Chemical Romance def. (9) 30 Seconds To Mars, 50-50 (OT, MCR won on total votes) (15) Panic! at the Disco def. (14) The Young Veins, 85-15 The West region final is #5 My Chemical Romance v. #15 Panic! at the Disco. Can the Panic! boys’ dream run continue on to the Final Four? Or will MCR continue to flex their muscles? It’s up to you. East I suppose it had to come down to this: 16th-seeded Tokio Hotel, who entered the tournament merely as an afterthought, roll on to the Elite Eight, after finally putting away a testy Vampire Weekend. (True story, VW frontman Ezra Koenig totally tweeted at me to complain about his band’s matchup.) They’ll face off against Owl City, who pasted MGMT. Both bands’ fanatical fanbases will need to up their efforts leading up to the Final Four. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def. (4) Vampire Weekend, 63-37 (3) Owl City def. (7) MGMT, 62-38 So, our East region final pits #3 Owl City against #16 Tokio Hotel. Surely the Internet will buckle beneath the weight of the vote. South The region that refuses to make any sense reaches perhaps the most (il)logical conclusion possible: #13 Alice in Chains — who outlasted Adam Lambert — going up against #15 Coheed and Cambria, who topped heavily favored Phish. Coheed seem to care about this tournament more than any band left in the field, so I suppose it’s hard to bet against them at this point. The results: (13) Alice in Chains def. (9) Adam Lambert, 65-35 (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (6) Phish, 56-44 The South final is #13 Alice in Chains v. #15 Coheed and Cambria. Someone’s got to win, right? Once again, Elite Eight voting opens Wednesday afternoon and runs until Thursday night over on the Newsroom blog. Vote early, vote often, and perhaps you can help your favorite band advance to the Final Four! Who do you think will take home the Musical March Madness championship? Are you as surprised as we are by the results? Talk about it here! Related Photos MTV News’ Band Bracketology Who Will Win MTV’s Musical March Madness?! Erykah Badu’s Naked ‘Window Seat’ Shoot ‘Shocks’ Dallas City Councilman

‘It was not the right choice to go and perform the video as it was performed,’ Dwaine Caraway tells MTV News. By MTV News staff Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Dallas City Councilman Dwaine Caraway knows Erykah Badu , and he’s always been impressed by the Texas native’s philanthropic ventures and support of D-town causes. But Caraway had to shake his head when news broke that one of the city’s favorite daughters ran buck naked down the streets of downtown while filming the viral Molotov cocktail that is her “Window Seat” video . “I’m a fan and personally know Erykah, and she’s a trooper here for our city,” Caraway said. “However, governing the city as we are expected to, it was not the right choice to go and perform the video as it was performed.” Despite his praise for her civic pride and engagement, Caraway — the man behind the local “Pull ‘Em Up” campaign to stop sagging pants — said he and fellow City Council members were definitely taken aback by Badu’s permit-free guerrilla action on St. Patrick’s Day. Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’: Shot By Shot “There should have been a permit issued for the filming,” he said. “Had there been a permit, then certain boundaries would have come into play and it wouldn’t be such outright shock.” Dallas Police told MTV News that had Badu’s actions been observed by one of their officers, she might have faced both a $4,000 fine and up to a year in jail, a sentence the video’s directors said she was more than willing to deal with in order to get her message across. But, because no officer witnessed the naked shoot, no charges are likely to be filed, and Caraway said no sanction will be forthcoming from the Council because no complaints have been lodged over the incident from witnesses. The councilman hasn’t reached out to Badu to speak to her about the stunt, but he said once his fellow council members are back from spring break next week, he expects some vigorous debate about the video. “I’m sure something will come up for discussion, and there will be some talk about changing the rules and putting some preventatives in place, and I’m certain something will come from it,” Caraway said. That said, given the worldwide attention “Window Seat” has garnered, Caraway figured that the video accomplished what Badu set out to in terms of hyping the release of her new album, New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh). “It’s a win-win for her,” he said. “Even if we were to fine her a million dollars, she’ll probably make $200 million.” Do you think Dallas should take any action against Badu’s video? Erykah Badu’s ‘Window Seat’ Video: Our Favorite Bystanders

The unnamed people of Dallas are almost as entertaining as the disrobing singer they’re watching. By James Montgomery Erykah Badu in her video for “Window Seat” Photo: Universal Motown Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” video is marvelous for many reasons, and not just because the Princess of Nu-Soul gets naked at the end. We love the historical feel of the clip and the politically (and socially) charged nature of the whole thing, but what’s really great about it is that it holds up after repeated viewings. Mostly because it’s so fun to watch the action unfolding around Badu — the shocked expressions of passersby, the reactions of the innocent bystanders — it’s almost like a video within the video. And so, to shine a spotlight on some of her unheralded (and unwitting) co-stars, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite ancillary characters. These are the brave men and women who have captured our hearts and imaginations, whether they know it or not. It’s our salute to the unidentified citizens of Dallas, for their excellence in background acting. May they enjoy their 15 minutes. Guy in the Red Jacket (appears at 1:40 mark) : We like him because he is a gentleman, picking up Badu’s jacket (and shoes) as she discards them, then sprinting down the block in an attempt to return them to her. Perhaps realizing that he has stumbled into a music-video shoot, he eventually stops. He could be the thief she tweeted about over the weekend who ran off with her clothing. Also, he sort of resembles a blurry Namond Brice from season four of “The Wire.” WTF Dude (2:05) : Easily the most blatant Badu-gawker in the entire video, this gentleman in a gray button-down, jeans and sweet shades can hardly be blamed for a) taking a good long gander and b) being utterly perplexed by what he sees. How would you react if a multiplatinum recording artist sauntered by in the buff? The 2010 MTV Movie Awards are honoring the best mystifying moments at the cinema, and we have to say zombie Bill Murray and projectile-vomiting Megan Fox have nothing on our WTF Dude. Kid Out for a Stroll With His Grandfather (2:10) : Makes his entrance just after WTF Dude, and much like him, the kid’s not ashamed to stare. In fact, he does so twice, though Grandpa doesn’t seem to notice what’s going on. We’re not sure why he’s wearing a blue baseball cap and a matching blue shirt, but we applaud his commitment to coordination. Unless he’s a member of the Crips, which would just be weird. Mom Shielding Kids (2:53) : Kudos to this mom — in jeans and short-sleeve shirt, flanked by two young children — for not being distracted by the sight of a woman doffing her top in the middle of a busy intersection. Though her daughter attempts to sprint across the street, mom holds tight to her young one’s hand, even as she tries to process just what in the holy hell is going on. Hey, Mom, even we’re not sure at this point, and we’ve watched this video 15 times. Kevin Smith (4:05) : OK, so this isn’t actually the critic-baiting , Southwest-hating director, but any time we see a hirsute, slightly husky guy in jean shorts and a bowling shirt, we can’t help but think of Smith. Plus, he doesn’t even break stride when approached by a nearly nude Soul Queen and a camera crew, which leads us to believe that he’s probably got some on-set experience. Guy Twirling Keys (4:33) : He’s got something on a lanyard, and we love that he’s absentmindedly flailing it around just as Badu removes her bra. That’s dedication. Also, we wonder why he’s standing there. Is he on his lunch break? Perhaps waiting for the bus? These are the things that keep us awake at night. Conflicted Blond Couple (4:36): Man in striped shirt and jeans, woman in black top and jeans. While the woman immediately looks away when she sees a pedestrian with her lady lumps exposed, her man has no such discretion. We salute this woman for not applying a sharp elbow to the creepy guy’s ribs. Violence is never the answer … as Ms. Badu will soon discover.
