Though the full schedule for the Venice Film Festival comes out Thursday, we already know what will close the gondolier-friendly celebration: Whit Stillman’s Damsels in Distress , which concerns “young women at an East Coast university, the transfer student that joins their group and the young men they become entangled with.” The comedy — which stars Movieline heroine Greta Gerwig and Adam Brody — premieres Sept. 10, after the awards ceremony. George Clooney’s The Ides of March opens the fest on Aug. 31. [ Deadline ]

Ryan Gosling puts on a charm offensive in the upcoming dramedy Crazy Stupid Love (look for Movieline’s full review next week), and judging from the first look at Gosling’s idealistic staffer in The Ides of March , he’ll continue that push in the George Clooney-directed political drama. Look at that dastardly smirk! Josh Lyman and Sam Seaborn would be so proud. Click through for a look.
Angelo Vita, 30, and Elisabetta Canalis were an item in 2007. Clooney and Canalis dated for nearly two years after making their romance official in September 2009. Talk about smooth sailing. Just two weeks after her split from George Clooney was made public, Elisabetta Canalis seemed to be enjoying the high seas – not stuck in troubled water. Coen brother stock actor John Turturro told the AV Club that not only would he love to make a big screen spin-off for his Big Lebowski bowler Jesus Quintana, but he has already written up some notes. “Joel and Ethan don’t really want to do it, but if I can get them to approve my outline, which I think they liked there’s a very good chance of making it.” Until then, you’re just going to have to settle for those DirecTV commercials for your Lebowski reunion fix. On top of being one of the worst-reviewed filmmakers of all time, German director Uwe Boll is many things: the possessor of a doctorate in literature, an author, an avid boxer (who has literally knocked out his critics ), a recipient of the rare Razzie “Worst Career” award, an outspoken adversary of Michael Bay, a non-chewer of Stride gum (the company supported a petition for him to retire in 2008), an unwavering believer in his own “art” form. And judging from the five minutes Movieline spent with him during Tuesday’s press event for BloodRayne: Third Reich — the straight-to-DVD third film in his BloodRayne franchise — Boll is also a current-events buff with an affinity for George Clooney movies and small, fluffy dogs.
The casting blitz for Zack Snyder ‘s Superman reboot Man of Steel keeps adding surprising but well-liked members to its cast (see Movieline’s growing gallery here ), with Deadline reporting that Law & Order: SVU ‘s Emmy-nominated Christopher Meloni is negotiating for an unknown but “major” role in the pic.
John Goodman is reportedly negotiating to join Ben Affleck ‘s Argo , the period political drama about a real-life covert operation to rescue six U.S. diplomats during the Iran hostage crisis in 1979. The kicker, and where Goodman comes in, is in the unusual circumstances of said rescue, in which the Canadian government enlisted Hollywood make-up and effects experts John Chambers and Bob Sidell to help the Americans escape in disguise as crew members of a fake science fiction film.
