Georgia Removed Scores Of Voter From Its Rolls As Stacey Abrams Tries To Make History, Lawsuit Says

More:

G eorgia’s Republican secretary of state, who’s competing against Stacey Abrams for governor, allegedly oversaw the removal of thousands of likely Abrams supporters from the state’s voting rolls. See Also: GOP Ramps Up Voter Suppression Efforts Ahead Of Upcoming Elections A group of voting rights organizations announced a lawsuit on Tuesday against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp for using a racially-biased method that has purged about 700,000 voters ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm elections, WXIA-TV reported. The organizations reportedly include Jesse Jackson ’s Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Kemp has failed to notify the affected voters who will likely be turned away at the polls on Election Day, the suit alleged. “What has taken place here in Georgia is an insult to all of the efforts and accomplishments that we have done throughout this country,”  Charles Steele , president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said at a press conference Tuesday about the Black struggle to win voting rights. This comes as Abrams attempts to make history as the nation’s first elected Black female governor. Civil rights lawsuit filed against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp | WJBF https://t.co/j7jGoqjV3D — The Voting News (@VotingNews) October 3, 2018 This case is part of a larger Republican voter suppression effort, according to activists. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 split decision, approved Ohio’s practice of removing registered voters from its rolls if they haven’t participated in recent elections. About a dozen other states controlled by Republicans wanted to adopt Ohio’s system following the court’s ruling. “Georgia has been more aggressive than Ohio in removing names,” Nse Ufot , executive director of New Georgia Project, told NewsOne , adding that the practice disproportionately affects people of color. Her organization “stands in solidarity” with the groups that filed the suit. Kemp is accused of using the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program to maintain Georgia’s list of eligible voters. The inaccurate system is seriously flawed , Ufot said. Meanwhile, Kemp has vehemently denied the voter suppression allegation, claiming in a statement that the lawsuit “has no merit” because Georgia hasn’t used the Crosscheck Program. Black 4-Year-Olds Tied Up By Preschool Teachers In Georgia

T wo Black 4-year-old girls were allegedly tied up by their preschool teachers in Decatur, Georgia, last week, and one of the children’s mothers said her daughter has not been her usual self since. SEE ALSO: Texas Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Man For Entering His Own Truck The two female teachers were “accused of zip-tying the children’s hands behind their backs as a form of punishment” on Sept. 24,  WSB-TV reported. The teachers resigned on Friday. The students claimed the teachers “threatened to throw spiders on them if they didn’t stop acting up,” the report continued. Tyisha Fernandes , one of the girls’ mothers, claimed her daughter “said, ‘mommy, I was scared to tell you because I thought I was going to get in trouble.’” The principal of Oak View Elementary in DeKalb County sent a letter to parents two days after the alleged incident. “This letter is written to make you aware of an incident that occurred at our school last week,”  Sabrina Pressley wrote in part. “The incident took place in one of our pre-k classrooms. A parent brought it to our attention on Tuesday.” The letter confirmed the teachers were under investigation and have been removed as staff members, conflicting with earlier reports of their resignations. “The safety and security of our children continues to be one of our main priorities,” the letter concluded. “We sincerely thank you for helping us in this endeavor.” Hopefully, the names of these teachers will be made public and they will never teach again. No child should be treated like this in America or anywhere else in the world. Two Georgia women face felony drug charges after they were arrested by narcotics officers for selling marijuana edibles on the grounds of their church. Per WJLA , 28-year-old  Ebony Cooper and 26-year-old  Leah Pressley were booked after the two attended an event hosted by a church in Savannah, Georgia. Local entrepreneurs were on the grounds of the church selling items and a vendor outside the church hosted the event. According to a police report, the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team began watching Cooper who had a booth on the premises selling cereal treats, brownies, pudding and other weed-infused items. Some of the officers even bought a few of the products. Once the event was over, the CNT followed the two women and finally apprehended them, seizing $1,000 in cash, a large amount of edibles and a loaded firearm. Cooper and Pressley were charged with felony drug possession and CNT also discovered that Cooper was advertising her “baked goods” on social media. These 5 Petty Republican Attacks On Black Candidates Show The GOP’s Desperation

R epublicans are showing their desperation to hold on to political power by resorting to petty attacks on Black candidates, as the GOP braces for a possible Democratic avalanche in the midterm elections. See Also: From Kamala Harris To Stacey Abrams: How Black Woman Are Saving Democracy The latest example happened in Wisconsin where Mandela Barns is running for lieutenant governor. On Monday, he called it “crazy” that his GOP rival would claim without evidence that he knelt during the national anthem at a state fair over the summer, Fox 6 News reported. Incumbent Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch , who was reportedly at the fair during the ceremony, told reporters that other people told her Barnes was kneeling. Here’s how Barns responded to her allegation: Me, a candidate. Standing next to every news camera. Kneeling. And she only “heard about it.” Rebecca, for real? History of this nation should caution her from making wild allegations like this. That's a dangerous game. https://t.co/jaVBl4EasC — Mandela Barnes (@TheOtherMandela) September 17, 2018 Here are other examples: Andrew Gillum Accused Of Being Weak On Stopping Child Molesters The GOP’s nominee for Florida governor Ron DeSantis claimed during a speech on Sept. 15 that his rival Andrew Gillum would be weak on preventing child molesters from targeting kids in the state, an accusation that the Miami Herald called “absurd.” DeSantis, who previously made a racially charged attack on Gillum, tried to link his claim to Gillum’s opposition to President Trump ’s immigration policy, the newspaper said.   NewsOne talked with @AndrewGillum about his campaign, as he races toward the finish line in the #FloridaPrimary for governor…. https://t.co/e2D9Xg3KE8 @peoplefor pic.twitter.com/aKGq5PwpWf — NewsOne (@newsone) August 28, 2018 Stacey Abrams Debt Shamed The Republican Governors Association released an attack ad on Aug. 10 that tried to debt shame Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams , amplifying a line of attack from her GOP rival Brian Kemp , WABE radio reported. Abrams owes the IRS $54,000, stemming from assisting her parents, that she has made arrangements to pay. “I have never failed to file my taxes, I have never failed to pay my taxes,” she said. “I am on a payment plan to fully fund my taxes.” Meanwhile, Republicans have ignored the “ legally dubious ” loopholes Trump used to avoid paying taxes.
