For Discussion: NAACP’s President And CEO Ben Jealous To Resigning To Spend More Time With His Family

NAACP President And CEO Ben Jealous To Resign Ben Jealous , NAACP President and CEO, has announced that he will no longer lead the civil rights organization. According to USA Today: The man who has become the face of the NAACP — from marches protesting the death of Florida teen Trayvon Martin to vigils for death row inmate Troy Davis in Georgia — is resigning effective Dec. 31. In an interview with USA TODAY, Benjamin Todd Jealous said the constant travel as president and CEO of the nation’s largest civil rights organization has kept him away too much from his wife, civil rights lawyer Lia Epperson, and children, daughter Morgan, 7, and Jack, 13 months. He said he plans to make a formal announcement to his staff Monday morning. “Leadership knows when to step up and when to step down,” Jealous said. “This day I can say with pride that I’m prepared to step down and make room for the next person who will lead this organization to its next chapter.” Jealous, 40, said he is talking to a handful of schools within commuting distance of metropolitan Washington about teaching. He plans to continue work with civil rights colleagues toward raising money for a fund to promote black participation in politics. In a separate interview with USA TODAY columnist DeWayne Wickham, Jealous detailed plans to create an “EMILY’s list for people of color.” The civil rights leader said he’s satisfied that he will leave an organization in much better condition than it was when he took over five years ago. Back then, the Baltimore-based civil rights group was financially shaky and shouldering constant criticism that its aging leadership was out of touch. Now, the organization is solvent, social media savvy and its staff seems to be part of a new cadre of leaders — headed by President Obama — who are diverse, well-educated and visible. “In the last five years, we’ve had double-digit revenue growth, we’ve spent five years in the black,” Jealous said. Under Jealous, the donor base has grown from 16,422 in 2007, just before he started, to 132,543 last year. Revenue has grown from $25.7 million in 2008 to $46 million in 2012. Out of a total score of 70, independent non-profit reviewing organization Charity Navigator gives the NAACP 51.42 for finances and 70 for accountability and transparency. When Jealous came in at age 35, he was hailed as the youngest leader of the organization in its history, although some questioned whether he was old enough to serve, and the board vote approving him was close. As a lifelong activist, he was known in the civil rights community but not by the general public. Over the years, he changed that, appearing in public constantly, often alongside other civil rights leaders. If there was a major regional or national civil rights event, Jealous was often there with rolled-up sleeves. Other civil rights leaders credited Jealous for reaching out beyond the groups that have traditionally worked with the NAACP and stretching old boundaries. Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, a group that advocates for gay and lesbian rights, said that when he assumed his role a little more than a year ago, Ben Jealous reached out and met with him on his first day on the job. Jealous was insistent that both groups work together, and Griffin credits Jealous with pushing the marriage equality measures that have passed in recent years, as well as strengthening previously weak activist ties between the black and lesbian and gay communities. “Many times I’ve called him a modern-day civil rights visionary, and I truly think that is the only description that captures him,” Griffin said. “He led the NAACP to embrace marriage equality but also transformed the national conversation of civil rights.” Mary Kay Henry, international president of the Service Employees International Union, said Jealous helped expand what’s considered the civil rights agenda from the expected voting rights and death penalty cases to issues surrounding the closure of dangerous power plants, early childhood education and health care. “He’s been incredible in re-energizing the NAACP and taking the national operations to the next level,” said Henry, whose group worked with the NAACP to create a fund to advance black participation in politics. Because Jealous does not leave for four months, the organization does not yet have a plan in place for his replacement, Brock said. Jealous suggested the 104-year-old organization might be looking at a woman president. Thoughts on this sudden resignation?

Racist Or Nah? House Of First Black Mayoral Candidate In Small Georgia Town Burned To The Ground Days After She Confirmed Plans To Run

Temple, Georgia’s First Black Mayoral Candidate Has Her House Burned Down An Africa-American female mayoral candidate from Temple, GA, who would be the city’s first black mayor should she win, appears to have been the victim of arson after her house was burned down just days after she confirmed her plans to enter the race. via WSBTV Georgia A woman attempting to become the first black mayor of Temple, Ga., finds it odd that four days after getting into the race, her house burns down. Karen Powell qualified for the race Tuesday. Saturday night, a home she owns off Old Bremen Road was destroyed by fire. Powell told Channel 2′s Tom Jones she is in total shock. “I’m a little jittery, yes. I’m a little nervous,” she said. “I’ve had the worst weekend I’ve ever had in my entire life.” “I just qualified. All of this, it was just like a domino effect,” Powell said. She was away from home Saturday when she got the call that her home was on fire. Fire officials are investigating how it started and whether it not it was an act of arson. Powell said her son lives in the house but wasn’t home at the time. Powell has two other challengers in the race. And while she finds the fire suspicious, she’s not ready to say if it had anything to do with her race or if it was intentionally set. “It’s just a lot of questions right now with no answers,” Powell said. Something definitely sounds shady about this “random” vicious attack. Thank goodness her son wasn’t home at the time. Photo Credit: WSBTV

Antoinette Tuff Talks Georgia School Shooter Down, Hailed as Hero

She may not take credit for it, but the fact remains: Antoinette Tuff saved an untold number of lives Tuesday. Michael Brandon Hill , 20, took an AK-47 on to the campus of Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, Ga., but surrendered to authorities without causing any real harm. All because Tuff opened up and managed to relate to the troubled young man. Antoinette Tuff Talks Down Georgia Shooter “Don’t feel bad, baby,” the front office employee is heard saying to Hill on 911 tapes that were released yesterday. “My husband just left me after 33 years … I’ve got a son that’s multiple disabled… It’s all going to be well.” Tuff went on to sympathize with Hill and convince him not to make a horrible situation worse. “We’re not going to hate you, baby. It’s a good thing that you’re giving up, so we’re not going to hate you,” she tells him. “Let’s do it before the helicopters and stuff like that come… “… it’s going to be alright, sweetie. I just want you to know that I love you, though, okay? And I’m proud of you. That’s a good thing that you’re just giving up, and don’t worry about it. We all go through something in life … You’re going to be okay.” Tuff then proceeded to give instructions from police to Hill, who put down his weapon and lay down on the ground with his hands behind his back. Once Hill is restrained by the cops, Tuff breaks down on the phone with the operator, screaming and crying: “Oh, Jesus! Oh, God!” What a tragic situation. What an incredibly brave woman. SMH: Black Boys Who Shot Baby Accuse White Mom Sherry West Of Setting Up Murder For Insurance Money

They always blame the Black guy … Black Teens Accuses Sherry West Of Murder Plot Via Daily Mail reports: Defense attorneys are set to strongly suggest that the real killers of a toddler brutally shot to death in his stroller were his parents, who had a financial interest in his death – and that their 18-year-old defendant who goes on trial this week is not guilty. Antonio Santiago had learned to walk, but not yet talk, when he was killed March 21, six weeks after his first birthday. He was strapped in his stroller, out for a walk with his mother a few blocks from their apartment near the Georgia coast, when someone shot the boy between the eyes with a .22-caliber bullet the size of a garden pea. De’Marquise Elkin, 18, who has been charged as the shooter, is scheduled to stand trial next week in a courthouse far from the scene of the crime. Kevin Gough, a public defender who is Elkins’ lead attorney, has strongly suggested in pretrial motions that the real killers are the child’s own parents. ‘Other evidence of record suggests Sherry West is mentally unstable, gave several inconsistent accounts of how the crime transpired, and had a financial interest in the death of her son in the form of an insurance policy,’ Gough said in a court motion filed August 5. Defense attorneys have said in court filings they have audio recordings and documents showing the child’s mother had dealings with Gerber Life Insurance Co. According to its website, Gerber Life sells life insurance policies for children starting as early as infancy. Coverage runs from $5,000 to $50,000. Ashley Glassey, West’s 21-year-old daughter, told television station WTLV of Jacksonville, Florida, soon after the shooting that her mother called her after Antonio was killed and asked, ‘How soon do you think the life insurance policy will send me a check?’ This story has sounded fish from the jump! What would two thugs really get out of shooting an infant? Unless the parents put them up to it for some cash and expected to never get caught. Hmm…. Continue reading

Justice For Trayvon: Rallies Gather In 100 Cities To Demand Federal Civil Rights Charges Against Child Killer George Zimmerman

The entire nation is demanding justice for Trayvon Martin ! Rallies Gather For Trayvon Martin One week after a jury found George Zimmerman not guilty in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, people gathered nationwide Saturday to press for federal civil rights charges against the former neighborhood watch leader , and to call for changes in the nation’s self-defense laws. Via HuffPo reports: The Florida case has become a flashpoint in separate but converging national debates over self-defense, guns, and race relations. Zimmerman, who successfully claimed that he was protecting himself when he shot Martin, identifies himself as Hispanic. Martin was black. For some attendees, particularly those who are black, the rallies seemed as much about those larger issues as about the verdict. “It’s personal,” said Cincinnati resident Chris Donegan, whose 11-year-old son wore a hoodie to the rally, as Martin did the night he died. “Anybody who is black with kids, Trayvon Martin became our son.” Chants rang out across the rallies. “Justice! Justice! Justice! … Now! Now! Now!” “`We won’t forget.” “No justice! No peace!” Many also sang hymns, prayed and held hands. And plenty of participants carried signs: “Who’s next?” “I am Trayvon Martin.” “Enough Is Enough.” Most rallies began at noon. In New York, hundreds of people – including Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, and music superstars Jay-Z and Beyonce – gathered in the heat . Fulton told the crowd she was determined to fight for societal and legal changes needed to ensure that black youths are no longer viewed with suspicion because of their skin color. “I promise you I’m going to work for your children as well,” she told the crowd. At a morning appearance at Sharpton’s headquarters in Harlem, she implored people to understand that the tragedy involved more than Martin alone. “Today it was my son. Tomorrow it might be yours,” she said. In Atlanta, speakers noted that the rally occurred in the shadows of federal buildings named for two figures who had vastly differing views on civil rights and racial equality: Richard B. Russell was a Georgia governor and U.S. senator elected in the Jim Crow South; Martin Luther King Jr. is the face of African-Americans’ civil rights movement. “What’s so frightening about a black man in a hood?” said the Rev. Raphael Warnock, who now occupies the pulpit at King’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. “History would suggest that we have plenty of data to be worried when we see other folk moving through our neighborhoods in hoods. Some of them have on pinstripe suits – but in their hearts, they’re wearing a hood.” In addition to pushing the Justice Department to investigate civil rights charges against Zimmerman, Sharpton told supporters In New York that he wants to see a rollback of “stand your ground” self-defense laws. “We are trying to change laws so that this never, ever happens again,” Sharpton said. “Stand your ground” laws are on the books in more than 20 states, and they go beyond many older, traditional self-defense statutes. In general, the newer laws eliminate a person’s duty to retreat, if possible, in the face of a serious physical threat. Zimmerman didn’t invoke “stand your ground,” relying instead on a traditional self-defense argument, but the judge included a provision of the law in the jurors’ instructions, allowing them to consider it as a legitimate defense. My name is Elsemieke, and I’m a 16-year-old girl from the Netherlands . About a year ago the tickets for the Believe Tour went on sale. I bought tickets and ended up with row 4! I was so happy I was going to see Justin so close. Four days later, there was meet and greet tickets on sale. I thought this could finally be my chance to finally meet Justin! They were really expensive and after a few hours of thinking and asking people what I should do, I finally bought them. I was going to meet Justin on 13th of April 2013. I had to wait 280 days until that day was finally here. I even bought a dress because I had to look nice for the meet and greet. On 13 April, I went on a party bus to the arena. After meeting a few beliebers outside the arena, I went inside. We thought we would meet Justin right away but we had to wait 4 hours. We saw a tour bus arrive and that was the tour bus that belonged to Justin. Then at the end of that hall there was black curtains, and Justin stood behind them. There were a few beliebers who had just met Justin and they were all crying and in shock. My friend said, “Wow. I’m not going to cry that hard!” After a few minutes it was my turn. A man said “NEXT” so I walked in. I stood next to Dustin for a few seconds. There were tears coming to my eyes, and then I started crying. I walked to Justin and hugged him immediately. He said, “Hi sweetie.”  And all I said was, “Oh my god, oh my god.” The photographer said he was going to take the picture, but I started to cry so I screamed, “WAIT” and Justin said, “Wait??!” with a very cute voice. I didn’t know what to do so I hugged him again. After I hugged him again I said, “Oh my god,” and Justin imitated me. Justin then said, “Okay look at the camera.” After the picture I said, “Thank you, I love you” and Justin said, “Thank you sweetloving.” I don’t even know if that’s a real word? I walked away and I was shaking, crying and I almost couldn’t breath anymore. I still can’t believe I met my idol after 4 years. Even though it was only like 20 seconds, it was the best experience of my life. Thank you Justin -@iBieberCanadian  Read the rest here: My name is Elsemieke, and I’m a 16-year-old girl from the…

My name is Storey, I’m 13 years old and I live in Georgia. It all started at my aunt’s house 2 years ago. I was 11 at the time and I had been spending the night over there with my cousin. My dad came to pick me up and said, “You’re going to work with me today.” Now my dad is a camera man for 11 alive news (the station in Georgia) so he gets to go to very cool places. I usually volunteer to go but today I had wanted to stay with my cousins. He said, “No, no you’re going with me.” As we drove into the big city of Atlanta I started to get excited. It had been a while since I had gone to work with him. He told me that we were going to a basketball game. I was upset, I didn’t not want to go at all. We walked in and immediately people started waving and screaming, not at us. I saw many girls in the crowd and was shocked at how many girls got this excited about basketball.  We got set up and a little later the players came out. Then Ludacris came out. Wow. Then more players came out. Everyone started screaming and waving there signs and out walked Justin Bieber. I just stood there and cried. I looked at my dad and he was smiling. He had surprised me. They played basketball and I died. Later on Justin, Ludacris and the team went into a room. We followed them. There were many photographers and videographers interviewing Ludacris and Justin. I called my mom in tears, not able to talk. As they were both about to leave, my dad yelled, “Storey get in there!” I had my dad’s iPhone and got the camera app out. Justin asked me what my name was and I said, “Storey” he said that’s a really cool name. I had always hated my name but the second he said that, I fell in love with it. I couldn’t look at him. I remember him trying to talk to me and I just looked the other direction and smiled. I was way too scared. Before they left, he gave me a hug and they left. All the photographers were asking me questions and just surrounding me for no reason asking if it was ok to publish and my name, age and my story. That’s my Bieber experience.  Read more from the original source: My name is Storey, I’m 13 years old and I live in Georgia. It…

Jesus Take The Wheel: 5 Charged With DUI In Atlanta After Man Is Maimed Walking On The Highway Causing Massive Pile-Up!

Wait, what?! 5 Arrested For DUI After Atlanta Man Is Hit Walking Onto The Highway Via AJC At least five people involved in an early morning, seven-car pile-up on I-75 have been charged with drunken driving, police said. The pedestrian who police believe started the chain of wrecks was also charged, Clayton County Police spokeswoman Officer Danielle Rosa said. “The pedestrian started walking into the interstate,” Rosa said. “That’s what kind of caused the seven-car pile-up.” The pedestrian, who was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, faces a pedestrian in roadway charge, police said. Shortly after 3 a.m., the pedestrian entered the southbound side of I-75 at C.W. Grant Parkway just north of I-285 near the exit to the international concourse of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and was struck by a vehicle. Six other vehicles subsequently collided in an apparent chain-reaction pile-up, police said, that blocked all lanes of the southbound highway past 8:30 a.m. Sir, WTF are you doing?? The five drivers charged with driving under the influence were immediately taken to the Clayton County Jail, she said. It is unclear whether the accused drivers were coming from the same place. Police traffic investigators and troopers from the Georgia State Patrol investigated the scene, and it was cleared by 9 a.m., authorities said. The arrested were identified by the State Patrol and Clayton County Police as: William Scott Kirk II, 23 of McDonough, charged with DUI and following too close; Najm Martinez, 33, of East Point, charged with DUI and driving less safe; Joseph Daise, 23, of Jonesboro, charged with DUI; Tawan Hayes, 38, of Riverdale, following too close and DUI. Another man, Joshua Noble, also was charged with DUI, said Sgt. Kevin Hughes, spokesman for the Clayton County Police Department. No additional information was immediately available on Noble. Clearly you have partied too hard when you walk onto the freeway. Hopefully this guy pulls through.
