I thought to myself how cute they were so I decided to get a bit closer than all of the other tourists and went down to a rock trying to pet them doing a baby talk while taking pictures… Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me. Everyone there screamed, including me. I was paralyzed by fear and couldn’t move, I just kept eye contact with it while my brother “Super Tony” jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast. We both got our hands and legs scratched by the rocks while trying to protect ourselves. I believe what happened is that it confused the shiny reflection of the blackberry I was taking these pics with, with some sort of fish. It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it. Wow! It’s funny that only half an hour before I was complaining to my guide Andrew that I never get to see wild animals up close on adventurous trips. Oh well, I can’t say that anymore!! Now I’m off to see some penguins! I hope they are a bit more friendly! Shak Dang… Get well soon Shakira. That wasn’t where the animal adventures ended though. For those you with Armed Forces friends and family, please pay attention… Violent sex crimes committed by active U.S. Army soldiers have almost doubled over the past five years, due in part to the trauma of war, according to an Army report released on Thursday. Reported violent sex crimes increased by 90 percent over the five-year period from 2006 to 2011. There were 2,811 violent felonies in 2011, nearly half of which were violent felony sex crimes. Most were committed in the United States. One violent sex crime was committed by a soldier every six hours and 40 minutes in 2011, the Army said, serving as the main driver for an overall increase in violent felony crimes. Higher rates of violent sex crimes are “likely outcomes” of intentional misconduct, lax discipline, post-combat adrenaline, high levels of stress and behavioral health issues, the report said. There is no excusing this kind of behavior whatsoever, but as we saw last week, soldiers may be dealing with mental health issues that may severely affect their judgment and attitude. The top five violent felony offenses committed by soldiers in 2011 were aggravated assault, rape, aggravated sexual assault, forcible sodomy and child pornography. Soldiers suffering from issues such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, and depression have been shown to have higher incidences of partner abuse, according to the report. Soldiers with PTSD are up to three times more likely to be aggressive with their female partners than those without such trauma, the report said. This is as sad as it is disturbing. If you have Armed Forces members amongst your family or friends, encourage them to seek counseling and treatment if they appear to be having trouble readjusting to civilian life. We’re not tryna be mean, but… A federal judge disclosed Friday that former presidential candidate John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition, a court source confirmed to CNN. Edwards had sought a delay in his criminal corruption trial, scheduled to begin this month. Attorneys and the federal judge met in a North Carolina courtroom Friday afternoon for a status hearing regarding the pending trial of Edwards, a former U.S. senator. Edwards appeared at Friday’s hearing. His lawyers had made the motion for a delay under seal, but some of its details were publicly revealed by the judge in the open hearing. The criminal trial has been delayed until at least March 26, according to the court source. Judge Catherine Eagles said she has been in contact with Edwards’ cardiologist, who recommended a postponement, saying Edwards is scheduled to undergo surgery next month. Edwards has to provide the court with a written medical update by February 28, according to court records. One legal expert, Marcellus McRae, a trial lawyer and former federal prosecutor, said he doubted that Edwards’ illness would influence a jury verdict. “Edwards’s illness may prompt the public, including potential jurors, to view him in a more sympathetic light. However, it is doubtful that this will have any impact on the outcome of his trial,” McRae said. “Given the nature of the charges, his physical condition is of no relevance and he will have in theory recovered by the time the case went to trial in March in any event.” Edwards’ attorneys asked in December to delay his criminal trial, saying he had an unspecified medical issue. Edwards is charged with six felony and misdemeanor counts related to donations to and payments from his failed 2008 presidential campaign. He is accused of conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws. He denies any wrongdoing. Edwards’ wife, Elizabeth, died of cancer in December 2010. The couple had separated that year, shortly after Edwards admitted that he had fathered a daughter with Rielle Hunter, who was hired to make documentary videos for his campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. Looks like another point for the “Legalize It” movement… Smoking a joint once a week or a bit more apparently doesn’t harm the lungs, suggests a 20-year study that bolsters evidence that marijuana doesn’t do the kind of damage tobacco does. The study by researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham was released Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association. Unlike cigarette smokers, marijuana users tend to breathe in deeply when they inhale a joint, which some researchers think might strengthen lung tissue. But the common lung function tests used in the study require the same kind of deep breathing that marijuana smokers are used to, so their good test results might partly reflect lots of practice, said Kertesz, a drug abuse researcher and preventive medicine specialist at the Alabama university. On average, cigarette users smoked about 9 cigarettes daily, while average marijuana use was only a joint or two a few times a month – typical for U.S. marijuana users, Kertesz said. The analyses showed pot didn’t appear to harm lung function, but cigarettes did. Cigarette smokers’ test scores worsened steadily during the study. Smoking marijuana as often as one joint daily for seven years, or one joint weekly for 20 years was not linked with worse scores. Very few study participants smoked more often than that. Four former NFL players are suing the league over long-term injuries they say were caused by concussions they suffered as athletes. The suits were filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in Atlanta on behalf of Jamal Lewis, Dorsey Levens, Fulton Kuykendall and Ryan E. Stewart. The men, all Fulton County residents, say they suffer from memory loss, headaches and sleeplessness as a result of multiple traumatic brain injuries during their careers. The suits allege that the NFL was negligent in its research of head injuries and concussions and downplayed the link between concussions and brain damage. The league also is accused of fraud for materially misrepresenting the risk to players, failing to warn them and not adequately protecting them. Here are a few details about the players involved Lewis, 32, a former running back for the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns, concluded a 10-season career in 2009. The 10,000-yard rusher was born in Atlanta and attended Douglass High. Levens, 41, also a former running back, played 11 seasons, ending in 2003. He had stints with the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants after attending Georgia Tech. Former Falcons linebacker Kuykendall, 58, played with Atlanta from 1975 to ‘84 and spent the 1985 season with the San Francisco 49ers. Stewart, 38, played five seasons at safety for the Detroit Lions after his collegiate career at Georgia Tech. He is currently one half of the “Two Live Stews” sports talk radio team on Atlanta’s 790 the Zone. All of the former players are demanding a jury trial and seeking payment for medical expenses, past and future loss of earnings, general damages for pain and suffering, punitive damages and attorneys’ fees. Why Nelly? Why have you forsaken them??? According to TMZ reports : Rapper Nelly cancelled a scheduled meet and greet with the troops at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska yesterday after he claimed to be sick. Nelly performed at Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage on Friday night. But he complained on twitter the next day he had 102 fever and was throwing up … and eventually said he had to bail on meeting the troops on Saturday. Nelly’s Facebook page was flooded by fans who were disappointed he didn’t show up. One even posted a pic (see below) of troops sitting and waiting for him to show … with the caption, “A few of the hundred, or so, military and their spouses (some who have their significant other deployed) on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson in Alaska, that you stood up.
