Mac Miller Ignored Label Offers On Road To #1 Debut

‘We just really wanted to stick with our home team,’ Mac Miller tells ‘RapFix Live’ of Blue Slide Park. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Mac Miller Photo: Getty Images What’s the first thing an artist does when he snags the #1 spot on the Billboard albums chart? Well, if he’s Mac Miller , he plays James Brown’s “I Feel Good” — and why wouldn’t he? On Wednesday (November 16), the 19-year-old Pittsburgh MC landed the #1 album with his independent debut, Blue Slide Park. It’s the first time an indie artist has obtained the top spot with a debut since Tha Dogg Pound did it in 1995. To mark the occasion, Mac — who is currently out on tour — appeared on “RapFix Live” via Skype. “It’s crazy. I’ve been trying to take it all in,” Miller told Sway. “I’ve just been in constant motion, so I haven’t gotten a chance to really stop and realize how crazy this is that we got the first #1 in 16 years. It’s nuts, man.” Mac broke out in 2010 when he signed to Rostrum Records and then dropped his K.I.D.S. mixtape. Rostrum, which is most noted for signing Wiz Khalifa, is an independent label. Even though Wiz is distributed through Atlantic Records, Mac has no major-label affiliation — not that the majors haven’t been interested. But Team Miller wanted to do things on their own. “I never really got far enough to see an offer for real,” Mac said. “I got no hatred towards major labels or anything. I never got a chance to hear what they had to say. We just really wanted to stick with our home team and keep it in the family.” Miller’s manager and Rostrum Records founder Benjy Grinberg has been fending off offers for Mac. “They called Benjy and wanted to talk, but Benjy was just on some ‘We’re not trying to talk right now, we’re doin’ this independently.’ And we just left it at that.” The move paid off. Since Blue Slide Park was released November 8, fans have been snatching up copies both digitally and physically. “The numbers are cool — 144,000, that’s crazy. But whatever it is, the fact that I got a #1 album on my first try independently is just something that no one could ever take away from me,” Mac said. “I had fans tweeting me with pictures of nine albums that they bought.” Did you snatch up Mac’s album? Ricky Gervais Will Return as Golden Globes Host

British comic stirred up controversy last year with his celeb-skewering one-liners and atheist sendoff. By Kevin P. Sullivan Ricky Gervais Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Weeks of debate have finally ended. On Wednesday (November 16), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association decided with a vote that British comedian Ricky Gervais will return to host the Golden Globes for the third time, according to Variety. Disagreement among the members of the HFPA and NBC, the network that broadcasts the television and film awards show, about whether the controversial host should return made headlines this week. NBC was Gervais’ most vocal proponent, but factions in the HFPA were uneasy about the “Office” creator after his no-holds-barred one-liners targeted some of Hollywood’s biggest names and he thanked God for being born an atheist. After the fallout from Gervais’ last turn as host of the Golden Globes , he told several sources that he no longer wished to host the show again . His feelings toward the job changed in recent months, when he became more vocal about wanting to return. He even went as far as suggesting that if he didn’t host, he would offer a live running commentary throughout the show. Once it was clear that talks of the comedian’s return were serious, Gervais came out to explain that the holdup was due to the HFPA’s indecision and that he had NBC’s full support. The Globes are not the only awards show with a hosting controversy. After Eddie Murphy stepped down as Oscars host , Gervais joked to Deadline that he would host both the Academy Awards and the Globes for a discounted price. Mike Posner Enlists Big Sean, Bun B For The Layover

‘I think a lot of people don’t realize that I came up doing mixtapes,’ singer tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Mike Posner Photo: Getty Images Celebrity Favorites: Mike Posner Don’t let Mike Posner ‘s pop success fool you: The boy is as hip-hop as they come. Before he cracked the Billboard top 10 with his debut single “Cooler Than Me,” the Duke grad was slinging free mixtapes like rappers do. On Sunday, the raspy-voice singer is going to return to what he knows when he drops his Layover mixtape. Since his first album was 31 Minutes to Take Off and his spring 2012 follow-up will be titled Sky High, Mike figured The Layover would be the perfect title for an in-between project. “I think a lot of people don’t realize that I came up doing mixtapes,” Posner told Mixtape Daily. “My first mixtape was with [DJ Don] Cannon that I made in my dorm room when I was a student at Duke, and ‘Cooler Than Me’ was a song on that mixtape that I recorded in my dorm room.” So even with all his success, Mike still has love for the mixtape grind. “It is incredibly important for me to reach back to my roots, and kind of do what I came up doing again,” he said. Posner once again recruited Don Cannon to help him put the tape together, and this time out, he’s collaborating with Big Sean, Big K.R.I.T., Bun B and Twista too. “I really took it back to the basics with this tape,” he explained. “I brought Cannon back in, Big Sean’s on the tape, Big K.R.I.T.’s on the tape, and I’m doing the remixes of songs and kind of like hip-hop-ifying classic non-hip-hop songs.” One such song is Elton John’s 1972 classic “Rocket Man.” Posner threw new synths and pulsating drums under the classic melody. While he adds his own swag to Elton’s lyrics, Mike also enlisted Bun B to add a verse for a 2011 upgrade. That’s not all: On “Wonderfall,” the Detroit singer/producer redoes Oasis’ “Wonderwall” and adds Big K.R.I.T. to the mix. All in all, it’s a refreshing, genre-bending take on some classic music. Nickelback’s Thanksgiving Show Makes United Way ‘Grateful’

Organization addresses controversy surrounding band’s halftime performance in Detroit in an email to MTV News. By James Montgomery Chad Kroeger of Nickelback Photo: Getty Images By now, you’ve no doubt heard what some Detroit Lions fans have to say about Nickelback’s halftime performance at the team’s annual Thanksgiving game (hint, it isn’t good), but to date, folks with the Lions — and the NFL, for that matter — have remained silent on the matter. The same cannot be said, however, for the United Way, the sponsors of the halftime show, who released a statement last week officially confirming that Nickelback were on board for the event, and have now weighed in on the controversy surrounding their performance. In particular, the organization addressed criticism from some Lions fans that an artist from Detroit should have been booked for the high-profile game in an email to MTV News. “We’re grateful to Nickelback for generously donating time and resources to this effort,” United Way director of publicity Sal Fabens wrote. “This is a nationally televised show that historically has featured artists from many locations, such as Indiana’s John Mellencamp [and] New York’s Mary J. Blige … For the past two years, we featured Motown artists and Detroit’s own Kid Rock, but the performers have never been limited to those from Detroit.” Fabens also wrote that, in one way, the fact that some 75,000 fans have signed an online petition calling for the band’s ouster is fitting, since the theme of the United Way’s halftime performance is “Live United.” “This is a call to action, an invitation for everyone to join us, regardless of their stance on various issues, to move forward on creating opportunities for a better life for all,” he wrote. “It’s going to take everyone working together … to make progress on ambitious goals in the areas of education, income and health across the country … We invite varying points of view and voices to all come together so we can move forward. “We would hope that various opinions about a rock band don’t overshadow the fact that the band’s generosity is helping to bring attention to this message,” Fabens’ email concluded. Katy Perry Would ‘Love To Have Children’ With Russell Brand

‘If it doesn’t hurt the first time, I’ll keep popping them out,’ singer tells Ellen DeGeneres. By James Montgomery Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: Dave J Hogan/Getty Images Katy Perry and Russell Brand celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary last month, and now Perry is talking about starting a family … eventually. During her appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which airs Friday (November 11), Perry was asked whether she and Brand have been making baby plans (you know, when she’s not out on her unending California Dreams Tour), and she answered that yes, they’ve discussed it, but that’s about as far as things have gone. “I would love to have children. I think that’s one of the reasons you get married, and especially to the person that you marry. You think, Hmmm, that person is going to be a good partner, a good parent,” Perry told DeGeneres. “But I’m not sure it’s yet. We’ll see, you know?” DeGeneres asked whether Perry wanted to have more than one baby, to which the singer replied, “If it doesn’t hurt the first time, I’ll keep popping them out.” “Word around town is it hurts ,” DeGeneres joked. “But people keep doing it anyway — they don’t care.” Perry also talked about how she and Brand manage their busy schedules, saying they have a self-imposed two-week limit on time apart. “I saw him yesterday,” she said. “[It had been] two weeks, that’s the longest we ever go. Anything longer than that is not fun.” The couple were married on October 23, 2010, in a “private and spiritual ceremony” in India, one that not surprisingly received more than its fair share of tabloid coverage. A few weeks after the wedding, Perry told MTV News that she found all the rumors and speculation to be quite amusing, and added that she was “too busy getting married” to keep up with all the coverage. “I don’t mind my wedding has turned into kind of a myth. It’s kind of cool,” she said. “We kept it kind of private, so when we heard some of the things that were going around we were like, ‘Ah, that’s hilarious.” Related Artists Katy Perry

Rihanna Declares ‘You Da One’ On Next Single

Dr. Luke track is second single from Rih’s November 21 release Talk That Talk. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images/DCP Rihanna is readying the release of her next album, Talk That Talk, on November 21, and with less than two weeks until it hits stores, she’s giving fans her second single, “You da One.” On Wednesday, MTV News got a preview of the album, and Rihanna channels a potty-mouthed sex kitten on “You da One.” The song is certainly more radio-friendly than most on an LP full of NSFW lyrics, as well as grinding, aggressive production. The Dr.Luke-produced single is a pure pop record with a touch of dubstep. She proudly declares on the song, “My love is your love/ Your love is my love,” later adding, “You’re the one I dream about.” The song will be officially unlocked on Friday on the star’s Facebook page. For the track’s cover art, Rihanna was shot in black and white smoking a cigarette with her head tilted back. “You da One” opens up the album, setting the tone for a nonstop party, where Rihanna never lets up. She embraces several musical genres, ranging from reggae to house to dancehall to pop, with a bit of everything in between. Talk That Talk ‘s first chart-topping single, “We Found Love,” was produced by Calvin Harris and currently sits at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. She also worked with Harris on the Talk That Talk track “Where Have You Been.” Other producers who made the album’s final cut include Stargate, Bangladesh and The-Dream. Jay-Z also appears on the album’s title track. In the lead-up to the LP’s release, Rihanna has some big TV plans, including an “X Factor” performance on November 17 and an appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” the same day the album drops. Mariah Carey Explains Jab Wasn’t About Kim Kardashian

‘I don’t read the tabloids unless it’s about me,’ new Jenny Craig rep says. By Jocelyn Vena Mariah Carey Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images When Mariah Carey sat down with Gayle King to announce she is the new face and body of Jenny Craig, she also opened up a bit about her personal life, including life as a new mom to “dem babies,” cooking for her famous friends and married life. When asked how she and Nick Cannon keep their marriage strong, she explained, “There’s no teams; me and Nick are the same team always … Sometimes we make each other mad. That’s why we’re not divorced after four months. I’m just saying this Hollywood thing … did I say something that is wrong?” The statement had many in the room laughing, given the fact that Kim Kardashian recently made headlines for breaking up with her hubby, Kris Humphries, after even less time. However, Carey insisted she wasn’t referring to anyone in particular. “First of all, I don’t read the tabloids unless it’s about me. And even then, when it is about me, I try not to read it unless it’s good,” Carey told “Extra.” “I don’t look at these people. “I don’t even know what it is, but I do know that marriages come and go really quickly in Hollywood.” Carey famously divorced record executive Tommy Mattola in 1998, and the pop star says when she married Cannon in 2008, she did it with the intention of staying married. “A lot of people have high-profile moments, and then they get a divorce, and I’m sure it’s very painful for them,” she said. “My thing is: I don’t want that. I got married to stay married. I want some stability for our kids, and Nick feels the same way. “Not only are we both kind of jokesters, for the lack of a better word, we are also kind of provincial in that way. I think we both believe in trying to make it through. I’m proud of it.” Related Photos Kim Kardashian And Kris Humphries: A Whirlwind Romance Related Artists Mariah Carey

Eddie Murphy Steps Down As Oscar Host

Announcement follows Brett Ranter’s exit as Academy Awards producer. By Kara Warner Eddie Murphy Photo: Getty Images Just one day after Brett Ratner announced his exit as producer , the 2012 Academy Awards have lost another key participant: host Eddie Murphy . According to a statement from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak, Murphy didn’t want to continue with the gig after the loss of Ratner. “I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well,” Sherak said. The “Tower Heist” star didn’t specifically address his reasons for resigning, but said he is sorry things didn’t work out for everyone involved. “First and foremost I want to say that I completely understand and support each party’s decision with regard to a change of producers for this year’s Academy Awards ceremony,” Murphy said in the statement. “I was truly looking forward to being a part of the show that our production team and writers were just starting to develop, but I’m sure that the new production team and host will do an equally great job.” Ratner submitted his resignation to the Academy on Tuesday after making headlines with his recent comments about a sexual relationship with actress Olivia Munn and, at a screening of “Heist,” using a gay slur, claiming, “Rehearsal is for f–s.” “Over the last few days, I’ve gotten a well-deserved earful from many of the people I admire most in this industry expressing their outrage and disappointment over the hurtful and stupid things I said in a number of recent media appearances,” he wrote in a letter to the entertainment industry. “To them, and to everyone I’ve hurt and offended, I’d like to apologize publicly and unreservedly.” No word yet on who is in talks to replace Ratner or Murphy. The 84th annual Academy Awards will be broadcast live on February 26. Related Videos MTV Rough Cut: Tower Heist

Justin Bieber Tourmate Weighs In On Paternity Suit

‘It wouldn’t even be possible for her to get backstage,’ Cobra Starship’s Gabe Saporta tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: WireImage Justin Bieber recently told the “Today” show that it’s impossible he fathered Mariah Yeater’s baby, as claimed in a headline-making paternity suit . Why? The minute he finishes a show, he promptly makes his way from the stage to an awaiting car, so there’s no time for backstage trysts. Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta, Bieber’s onetime tourmate , confirmed the teen star’s story. “It wouldn’t even be possible for her to get backstage,” he told MTV News on the red carpet at the Glamour Women of the Year event in New York on Monday. “The security is so crazy there, you can’t get backstage. And even if you got backstage, first of all, he leaves the show as soon as he’s offstage, which is pretty cool. He runs offstage, gets in a car and jets, because the whole city turns into chaos.” Before the My World Tour wrapped up last month, the band experienced that craziness firsthand, likening it to something straight out of the movies. “There’s a really cool video of us online get mobbed at the airport,” Saporta recalled. “It’s like zombie apocalypse; it’s awesome.” Speaking of awesome, 2011 has been a pretty great year for Cobra Starship. Their infectious, Sabi-featuring track “You Make Me Feel” has been burning up radio, but that Bieber tour is pretty much the highlight of the year for Saporta. “We were playing, like, 50,000-people stadiums,” Saporta said of the South American jaunt. “It was insane, and I’m from South America too, so for me, it was especially satisfying. I gotta say, for being the most famous kid in the universe, he’s remarkably well-adjusted, and … there’s like 75 people traveling with him. It feels like a family, and it was really nice to be a part of that family for a bit of time.” Related Artists Cobra Starship Justin Bieber
