Lady Gaga also booked for this year’s show, hosted by Ryan Seacrest. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images Maybe you haven’t made your plans yet, but Justin Bieber knows exactly where he’ll be on New Year’s Eve: Times Square in New York. Bieber has been booked to play live on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2012,” joining Lady Gaga on the 40th anniversary edition of the December 31 staple. The show will help cap a busy holiday season for Bieber, who is preparing to release his first-ever holiday album, Under the Mistletoe, on November 1. The first video, for the song “Mistletoe,” will debut Tuesday (October 18) at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Bieber said he’s excited for fans to check out his mix of holiday standards and new songs. Regarding why he decided on a holiday release as fans wait for the follow-up to My World 2.0, Bieber said, “I was going to put out my album soon anyways, and I was thinking, ‘It’s near Christmastime. If I’m going to release an album near Christmas, I figure maybe I’d just do a Christmas album.’ The fans get more music, and everyone’s happy.” The singer said he picked a mix of his favorite Christmas songs (“Silent Night,” “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”) and new tunes (“Mistletoe,” “Christmas Love”) to offer a little something for everyone. “I picked ‘Santa [Claus is] Coming to Town,’ because everyone loves those songs. Those are classics. They get people excited for Christmas,” he said. “And then, for songs that we wrote, we wanted to make enough new songs for people to hear new music and not just hear some classics. There’s a lot of new stuff on there.” Catch the premiere of Justin Bieber’s “Mistletoe” video Tuesday (October 18) at 7:54 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, with a full interview to follow on MTV.com. Late Indy racer’s car was sponsored by Timberlake’s William Rast clothing line. By Gil Kaufman Dan Wheldon Photo: Getty Images Justin Timberlake paid tribute Monday (October 17) to late Indy racer Dan Wheldon, who was killed Sunday in a horrific 15-car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Wheldon’s car was sponsored by Timberlake’s clothing line, William Rast, and the two men were said to be friendly. “I was deeply saddened to hear the news on Dan Wheldon’s unfortunate and untimely death,” Timberlake said in a statement. “He was a great driver and a strong supporter of William Rast Racing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family in their time of loss.” British driver Wheldon, 33, the father of two young children with wife Susie Behm, was airlifted to a local hospital in the wake of the crash, which sent his car hurtling through the air after it struck another racer’s vehicle. He was pronounced dead a few hours later. Actress Ashley Judd, who attended the race in support of her husband, driver Dario Franchitti, also paid tribute to Wheldon, writing a memorial poem on her Twitter feed. “As we continue to absorb Dan’s accident — we forget, remember, re-experience shock, denial, anger, pain — I’m reminded of a favorite poem,” she wrote before quoting John Donne’s “Holy Sonnet 10”: “DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so, For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow, Due not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me. From rest & sleepe, which but thy pictures be, Much pleasure then from thee, much more must flow, And soonest our best men with thee doe goe, Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie. One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally, And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.” The other drivers in the race took five laps in Wheldon’s honor following the crash, which ended the contest. ‘Twilight Saga’ star and former ‘American Idol’ contestant tied the knot in Malibu on Sunday. By Jocelyn Vena Paul McDonald and Nikki Reed Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images “Twilight Saga” actress Nikki Reed and former “American Idol” season 10 contestant Paul McDonald are officially married. The couple tied the knot over the weekend in Malibu, California, according to Usmagazine.com . A rep confirms that the couple shared their big moment in front of 100 guests on Sunday. “We couldn’t be happier!” the couple said in a statement. “[We were] surrounded by our family and friends. We’re so glad this day has come!” The two began dating in April and got engaged just two months later. They announced their plans to marry at the MTV Movie Awards , where Reed was spotted sporting an engagement ring. When McDonald spoke to MTV News about the actress, he described her as “super-cool.” In June, he enthusiastically said, “I love her to death.” “She’s amazing. It’s kind of one of those things you don’t expect,” he said. “Like, last year I never would have thought I’d be getting married. She’s amazing. She’s the perfect girl. We fit each other. When you know, you know, and she’s the one.” The pair has been quite public about their relationship. McDonald has been planning on releasing an album tentatively called The Nikki Reed EP, and when Reed hit up the Teen Choice Awards in August, she was sporting his face on her nails and revealed that he was being quite the bridezilla. “He’s doing a lot of it, he is. He’s, like, taking control,” Reed said about McDonald ‘s part in the wedding planning. “He sits with his computer in between songs and is kind of on a roll with everything.” Leave your well-wishes for the couple in the comments below! ‘These vampire movies have come out, and you go, ‘Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man,’ ‘ Depp tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Johnny Depp Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Anytime Johnny Depp and Tim Burton get together for a film, fans know to expect the unexpected, particularly with their retellings of familiar stories like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Alice in Wonderland” and their next highly anticipated project, the big-screen adaptation of ’60s vampire soap “Dark Shadows.” The fan fervor surrounding “Shadows” hit a high point recently when photos leaked of a heavily made-up Depp in his full Barnabas Collins costume , followed by the production’s first official photo of the entire cast posed family portrait-style and Burton in action on set . When MTV News caught up with Depp recently as he promoted “The Rum Diary,” which hits theaters October 28, we asked what inspired the highly stylized look of the character. “The memory that I have of watching the show as a kid, Jonathan Frid and what he did with that character was the main inspiration, for sure,” he said of the actor who originated the role of Barnabas. “But also the idea of, over the years, these vampire movies have come out and vampire TV shows and stuff like that, and you go, ‘Well, nobody looks like a vampire, man. What happened?’ “I adored Dracula, still do. I adored [everyone] from Bela Lugosi to Christopher Lee. I adore Nosferatu, [played by] Max Schrek. I adore all those wonderful sort-of horror films. And it was an opportunity really, an opportunity to sort of go into what really doesn’t exist [onscreen] so much anymore, which is classic monster makeup and a classic monster character,” Depp explained. “So that was really the inspiration Tim and I talked about.” Depp and Burton’s “Dark Shadows,” which also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Hayley and Eva Green, will be released May 11, 2012. Country crooner’s Clear As Day tops the Billboard charts, but how does he size up against other ‘Idol’ champs? By James Montgomery Scotty McCreery Photo: Getty Images December 14, 2003. That was the date Ruben Studdard ‘s Soulful opened at #1 on the Billboard albums chart. And somewhat incredibly, it’s also the last time a debut disc from an “American Idol” champion accomplished the feat. Sure, there have been some near-misses along the way, but since Studdard, none have been able to bow at #1, a streak that spanned some 2,859 days (or 4,116,960 minutes, in case you were counting). It’s also a streak that officially came to an end on Wednesday (October 12), with the rather eye-opening #1 debut by “Idol” season 10 champion Scotty McCreery, whose Clear As Day sold nearly 197,000 copies to take the top spot. It’s the highest first-week number for an “American Idol” winner since David Cook sold almost 280,000 copies of his self-titled debut in 2008 and, given the recent lack of chart success from “Idol” champs, it’s an even more impressive feat. Because, while some “Idol” also-rans (Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry, Adam Lambert, etc) have managed to move units, the contemporary crop of champions have suffered poor first-week sales. Thanks to the support of the country music crowd, McCreery has managed to buck that trend. But where, exactly, do Clear As Day ‘s first-week numbers rank among the debuts by other “American Idol” winners? We’ve crunched the figures, along with the chart positions, below:
But Evan Rachel Wood might pick Justin Bieber as her running mate because he knows ‘how to work a crowd.’ By Kevin Sullivan, with reporting by Eric Ditzian George Clooney at the “Ides of March” premiere Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images “The Ides of March” has lots of people talking politics, so we thought we’d ask a political question of our own. When we hit the red carpet Wednesday night for the film’s New York premiere, we asked the celebs who they would choose as their running mate. The political drama, which hits theaters Friday, follows Ryan Gosling as one of the main men behind the campaign of presidential hopeful Governor Mike Morris, played by George Clooney — so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Gosling and Clooney were among the early front-runners for vice president. Marisa Tomei, who plays a New York Times political reporter, gave the nod to Clooney because of his politic savvy and for a second, much more private reason. “He’s astute on all the issues,” Tomei says. “And he’s got balls.” Gosling may or may not be the right man for the job, according to Clooney, who jokingly sees a downward trend in his co-star’s career. “I think he’s going to go south pretty soon if you look at him. He seems to be on his last leg,” said the ever-sarcastic Clooney. “I think he’s almost, like, 30 years old.” Judah Friedlander from “30 Rock” took his answer in an entirely different direction. “No vice president. You need a leader,” Friedlander said. “If you’re a really good president, you don’t need a vice president.” For her running mate, Evan Rachel Wood let her true colors as a hard-core Belieber show: “Ryan or George — or Justin Bieber!” she suggested, saying they “all know how to work a crowd.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Ides of March.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
‘Me and Tip been homeys for a long time,’ Knicks power forward tells Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman T.I. Photo: Getty Images Celebrity Favorites: Amar’e Stoudemire Rappers weren’t the only ones who lined up to welcome T.I. home after he was released from prison last week. NBA baller Amar’e Stoudemire joined Tip at Atlanta’s Club Esso to celebrate the MC’s homecoming over the weekend. “Me and Tip been homeys for a long time now, so it’s good to see him back on his feet, back out here in the city,” the Knicks power forward said when MTV News caught up with him on the black carpet for the BET Hip Hop Awards. “I came out to support him.” This time of year, Stoudemire is typically gearing up for the basketball season, but due to a labor dispute between the players union and league owner, the 2011-12 NBA basketball season is currently locked out and may be lost entirely if an agreement isn’t reached soon. Stoudemire has been keeping plenty busy. This past weekend, he attended the Hip Hop Awards and will appear as a presenter when the show airs next Tuesday. Not only that, Amar’e is working on a clothing line with Rachel Roy. So what does a top baller listen to during his downtime? Jay-Z and Kanye West, of course. “Right now, I’m on that Watch the Throne album. You can’t go wrong with that one baby,” he proclaimed. Still, the number-one question on every sports fans mind is: When will players return to the hardwood? Stoudemire didn’t have an answer, though he sounded optimistic. “Hopefully soon. Right now, we’re on the cusp trying to figure out what we’re gonna do with this new deal,” he said. “Once we get that sorted out, we should be able to play soon.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . ‘That’ll be the one [that’s] kinda like ‘Since U Been Gone,’ she tells MTV News of new song ‘(Stronger).’ By Jocelyn Vena Kelly Clarkson Photo: Mike Moore/ Getty Images Kelly Clarkson doesn’t need a guy to make her feel strong, and on her new track “What Doesn’t Kill You (Stronger),” she lets a former flame know it. The song is the latest tease for her October 24 album, Stronger. Clarkson tweeted the official version of the song after a leak hit the Internet last week. On the dance track, which is all about the power of loving yourself, Clarkson proudly declares over a fist-pumping beat, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger/ Stand a little taller/ Doesn’t mean I’m lonely when I’m alone.” “Stronger” fits in nicely with Clarkson’s canon of empowerment-themed, kiss-off tunes. And this time around, she’s also moving on to a new guy, singing, “You heard that I was starting over with someone/ They told you I was moving on, over you/ You think I’d come/ I’d come back swinging/ You tried to be break me/ But you see what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” A version of the first song leaked over the summer but the official one had yet to be released until now. When Clarkson spoke to MTV News about the track, she said it reminded her of one of her own all-time favorites. ” ‘What Doesn’t Kill You,’ I can’t wait to perform that live,” the singer told us. “We’ve already rehearsed it, and it’s so much fun. It’s like this big dance anthem. That’ll be the one [that’s] kinda like ‘Since U Been Gone,’ [with] people jumping up and down to [it], and it’s just kind of really inspiring, so I can’t wait to perform that one.
